Saturday evening, is this year over yet, links

by | Jul 2, 2022 | Daily Links | 239 comments

Get the point?

Yeah, my feelings for this year, and the last week in particular, is that 2022 can screw itself right in the pucker. Let’s see if we can find some happy, positive links!

There’s gonna be some frustrated circuit court judges.

I am so looking forward to getting on an airplane tomorrow.

This is uplifting.

Sorry buddy, your invention is their life.

Head on desk. Why was he invited in the first place?

Yeah, I’ll stay home.

Okay, enough of that shit. This is Independence Day weekend, so let’s end with something pleasant. Turn up the volume, ease the seat back and crank the ho…er, enjoy the music.

Oof, good luck on the travel, Spud.

I’m feeling really glad we did our summer flying last week (and, even then, both flights were late).

    • Negroni Please

I’m flying in two weeks but I don’t wanna go. Maybe they’ll cancel my flight and the airline will pay me money!

      • slumbrew

Free hotel + food vouchers, and free change to shift the return flight back a day (plus the resort shifting our stay back by a day) was truly the best possible outcome, once we missed that connecting flight.

I’ve heard many terrible stories since then. We got off lightly.

      • Gustave Lytton

Read your airlines’ contract of carriage. For a delayed/cancelled flight due to the airline, the above is the minimum.

      • slumbrew

Oh, yeah, I know – I should have mentioned that we were late out of BOS because they needed a start-cart. But, we were also routed far to the west due to weather in NY.

I suspect the weather alone would have been enough for us to miss the connecting flight – and that’s just act of god & not covered.

The nice people at the service desk not so subtly emphasized “and you were late because of a mechanical issue as BOS, correct?” – I’m kicking my wife in the ankle as she starts talking about the weather we ran into…

      • slumbrew

That, and the resort was under no obligation to just reschedule everything back a day like that – could have made us pay for the day we missed and charged again if we wanted to stay an “extra” day. They were great.

      • Gustave Lytton

That is nice. Last time we missed the first night, ended up paying because it was cheaper and preserved our rate for the entire stay. No stay credit for that night thought. 🙁

      • DEG

Assuming they’ll admit its their fault.

I’ve had a situation where the airline denied it was their fault… it was “weather”. Hmm… I remember the pilot making an announcement about the ground crew not loading bags in a timely fashion before we left. Nothing about the weather.

      • Old Man With Candy

In Spud’s case, he at least has some excellent beverages waiting when he arrives.

    • grrizzly

I’m flying on Monday. But it will be on Swiss. The Swiss are still reliable… right?

      • Ted S.

They reliably narrow their gaze at puns.

    • DEG

Oof, good luck on the travel, Spud.

      Seconded.

So sorry you’re having such a bad time, Spud, but thanks for the MM music – always appreciated. Gives me a cheap, tawdry excuse to post once again my favorite of hers – heck, listen to the whole album, starting off with a lovely cover of some Smokey.

I’m setting myself the lofty goal of putting together a post on the weird world of desert flora here in Nevada.

PlantSnap app has been helpful! There is wires shut out here.

Yesterday, I thought my cat was watching a ghost in the living room. Eventually it became obvious it was a GIGANTIC moth!! Brown and orange and quite lovely. At least 4 inches across.

I got the little pool net and managed to get him outside undamaged.

Moths are awesome. The Luna moth kicks the ass of all butterflies for beauty.

    • hayeksplosives

“Wires shut” should have been “weird shit”

How this phone doesn’t know my vocabulary by now is baffling.

    • Tundra

The desert is shockingly full of cool shit. I’d love to see a post on that!

That sounds awesome! +1 Would read.

    • MikeS

We get Hawk Moths visiting the flowers in the evenings. Very cool.

    • R.J.

Those are so cool. I saw a giant moth once on the side of the house. It was fabulous. So furry.

      • dbleagle

Don’t forget the scorpions, Jerusalem Crickets, and various other nighttime arachnids. You are in an interesting area where multiple deserts have some influence, Plus every day you get a bit farther from NYC and Mexico. Of course, given enough time after you pay off your mortage your current lot will be under an ocean. (Same as my lot, but my lot will be underwater more rapidly than yours.)

One time sailing between the islands a person asked me why wasn’t I concerned about pollution because I ripped an empty beer can open and tossed it overboard. I said no, from a legal standpoint we were far enough offshore to not be an issue. From a pollution standpoint I simply explained we had over 6000 feet of water under the keel. The can would drop to the ocean floor where in the fullness of time it would either A) be encased in ocean sediments- or- B) have enough calcium over it that with pressure it would be a small inclusion in limestone. Either step was an intermediate end because the heavy odds were that it would eventually be subducted into the Aleutian Trench and remelted into basalt. So no, I was not concerned about pollution. I received a confused look similar to a sleepy sloth watching a session of laser “Dark Side of the Moon” show.

    • Shpip

I used to have a sphinx moth that found its way inside the house once or twice a week. Damn thing drove the cats bonkers, flittering tantalizingly just out of jumping range, landing near shelves with crystal vases where a cat’s leap would lead to breakage and a severe scolding (and the cats knew it).

I finally named the insect April, for April is the cruellest moth.

      • dbleagle

Big Luna Moths out here this time of year. The locals freak if one land near them or on a window because they are said to foretell death. I think they are kewl.

How to let people from the south know you aren’t from the south? Ask for unsweetened tea.

Asking local business where best spot on the lake to watch the gigantic firework show and I get a feeling they don’t like this no accent feller asking questions.

    • slumbrew

Ask for “iced tea”, no-modifier, at your peril down there.

I think I got the diabeetus just from the accidental mouthful I swallowed.

I’m from the South and I ask for unsweetened tea all the time. I don’t want to develop the diabeetus and super sweet iced tea tastes nasty if you can manage to lay off of it for a while.

      • slumbrew

I’ve got a soft-spot for Brett Gelman since Eagleheart.

Plus, Murray had the funniest line in the series

    • Brochettaward

Dialogue is all on-point, cliched, by the numbers. The plotline is repetitive. The entire season is bloated. It feels like there are almost no consequences for the main cast after they went ahead and brought back that prog-fuck from the dead. They spent 90% of the season fucking around getting Eleven her powers back. So, basically, two of the major plotlines of the season were just about undoing the things they did at the end of last season. Did I mention how fucking repetitive every season is? And how many times are you going to delve deeper into Eleven’s past and pretend it’s progress for the character?

I don’t want to spoil things, but at least when it comes to her powers, she’s basically Rey fucking “Skywalker” now.

To top it off, most of the characters are not aging well as actors. They were good for kids, and now a couple of them are just fucking obnoxious. Lucas is as dry as a piece of cardboard. The kid who plays Will doesn’t do anything believably besides cry over his unrequited love for Mike (and this show gets a free pass for its woke bullshit), and Mike is annoying, obnoxious little shit. Maybe that’s why they basically sidelined his character this season.

And then they keep adding fucking characters who have next to nothing to do. They basically just have them say and do shit for plot convenience that one of the nerd kids would have done in the earlier seasons.

      • slumbrew

Nothing you said is wrong (jay-sus, is Will terrible).

I’m a completionist, so I’ll finish the season. But I can’t imagine I’ll keep going if there’s another one.

      • Brochettaward

I understand the completionist thing. I will probably watch a fifth season if it’s the final one. I’ve made it through 4, so I might as well. Don’t think I’ve particularly cared for any of them outside the first one, and even then I found it highly overrated. It helps that I don’t pay Netflix anything, and they haven’t gone too preachy on the show itself with the woke bullshit.

There’s always a chance in a final season they’ll be willing to take more risks, maybe actually kill a main character off. The show has gotten increasingly violent and I did like the horror movie villain vibe Vecna had going at first. Before they made him generic, sophomoric megalomaniac guy.

Not proud of it. I was in my early twenties and high on meth. No excuse but it seemed pretty fucking funny at the time…the room received it well, I guess.

      • slumbrew

I recently found some old pictures from college where that had been done to someone.

ISTR he pissed in on the bookcase at some point, so I still don’t feel that bad about it.

Up here about 5% of the population hate the flag, 20% hang it up-side down and all of the rest could give no shits.

      • Trigger Hippie

There’s still around 40% of us who still actively love our country. To be honest, the older, more informed and wiser I get with age the more I become jaded with the anniversary ritual. The twenty-first century has been an extreme disappointment in regards to the potential of the post Cold War 90’s.

Yet still, many of my neighbors are currently breaking the law by setting off fireworks within city limits while their small children are stranding nearby. I’m sure a few of them are at least half drunk and/or stoned as well while the local law enforcement turns a blind eye.

This warms my heart a few degrees.

Have a nice summary of the sloppy and unconstitutional “thought” process behind the dissents in the recent SCOTUS decisions.

It is instructional, for me at least, to see them all laid out like this in a manner that highlights just how dishonest the left is.

    • Brochettaward

The scary thing is that these setbacks for the left are only temporary. Once they regain the court, all will be reversed. And they will regain the court in due time. They now control all the institutions outside of government and don’t even pretend to have the slightest pretense of neutrality. Upcoming generations are fully and completely propagandized. Look at what the GOP has offered to younger generations – Bush the Lesser and then we had 3 years of Trump before everything went to shit because Democrats shut down most of the country. Under Trump, there was wall to wall negative coverage of everything the guy did – he was painted as a fascist.

I would have said that 8 years of a booming economy under Trump would have done a lot of good in showing younger generations a nice contrast between the squishy socialism of the progressive left and the more pro-growth policies of the right. But covid and the hysteria the media could whip up was too great. We may get 8 years of relief after Biden falls in 2024 if we are lucky. But expect every last dirty trick the left used under Trump to be used on his successor.

And like it or not, as a libertarian, the R’s are the best you got. And I say that as a non-voter.

      • Raven Nation

“I would have said that 8 years of a booming economy under Trump would have done a lot of good in showing younger generations a nice contrast between the squishy socialism of the progressive left and the more pro-growth policies of the right.”

Nope. It would have been painted as another example of the rich getting richer.

      • Brochettaward

I think enough people would have experienced the reality and would have been able to compare their lives under Obama to Trump. And now we have 4 years of Biden, as well, which is even worse. So the question becomes will the R’s put up a non-establishmentarian who can get the job done.

      • R.J.

You know that answer as do I. No they won’t.

Depending on the desired effect the president

        – is in charge of every nickel
        – has no sway over the economy whatsoever
        – is benefiting from policies from president 22.7 years ago
        – is still suffering from policies of president of 14.2 years ago
        – is responsible for the inelastic demand for oil, healthcare, whatever nonsense I choose

These are the opinions down at the Blue Plate held by the guys who can’t spell GDP

      • EvilSheldon

Second attempt at this comment. FU comment eating squirrels!

Tonight I will rewatch “Gettysburg” since we are in middle of the anniversary of the battle. On this day in 1863 LTC Joshua Chamberlain demonstrated a case of world class toxic masculinity. The unit he commanded was the extreme left of the Union line. If he and his men failed in their mission the Confederates could roll up the Union line and cause the retreat of the entire Army of the Potomac. Six times the CSA charged and they held the flank. As the Confederates formed only a few hundred yards away Chamberlain was informed his unit was out of ammo. Most people would think, “We did our best, but we need to pull out of the line.” Not Joshua. He told his men to fix bayonets and as the Confederates charged developed he gave the order to “Charge” and led his men downhill into the face of the Alabamians. They btoke the charge and captured hundreds of prisoners. Joshua save the Union on that field, that day. He was recognized for his valor with the Medal of Honor. But Joshua was not done and a year later would kick death in the balls leading a charge at Petersburg. Even being shot though the intestines and bladder couldn’t kill Chamberlain. US Grant so admired Chamberlain (now a Brevet Major General) that he selected Joshua to accept the surrender of Lee’s army.

    • dbleagle

Gettysburg was the first of a one two punch that helped to doom the rebel cause. Pickett’s Charge would fail tomorrow cementing Lee’s loss. The next day, July 4, 1863, Grant would accept the surrender of Vicksburg and an entire CSA army. After July 4, 1863 the momentum would remain with the Union, despite some horrible days ahead.

Vicksburg would next celebrate Independence Day in 1944.

      • Raven Nation

“For every Southern boy fourteen years old, not once but whenever he wants it, there is the instant when it’s still not yet two o’clock on that July afternoon in 1863, the brigades are in position behind the rail fence, the guns are laid and ready in the woods and the furled flags are already loosened to break out and Pickett himself with his long oiled ringlets and his hat in one hand probably and his sword in the other looking up the hill waiting for Longstreet to give the word and it’s all in the balance, it hasn’t happened yet, it hasn’t even begun yet, it not only hasn’t begun yet but there is still time for it not to begin against that position and those circumstances which made more men than Garnett and Kemper and Armistead and Wilcox look grave yet it’s going to begin, we all know that, we have come too far with too much at stake and that moment doesn’t need even a fourteen-year-old boy to think This time. Maybe this time with all this much to lose than all this much to gain: Pennsylvania, Maryland, the world, the golden dome of Washington itself to crown with desperate and unbelievable victory the desperate gamble, the cast made two years ago.”

In three years, 1944 will be further away from present day than 1944 was to 1863.

    • creech

While Chamberlain is deservedly a hero (and he publicized himself for decades after the War), in some sense it was Brig. Gen. George A. Custer who saved the Union’s bacon at Gettysburg.
Not much attention is paid to Custer and his charge, “Come On, You Wolverines,” as he led 400 men of the Wisconsin Cavalry against 6,000 of Jeb Stuart’s vaunted cavalry. Custer brave charge blunted Stuart’s move around the Union right flank and into their rear. Had Stuart arrived in the rear as Pickett charged the wall, the Union Army may have collapsed in chaos.
This was much more significant than if Chamberlain had collapsed and the 15th Alabama had turned the Union left flank.

      • dbleagle

You make a good point creech about Custer’s Michigan cavalry blunting Stuart, but I think day 2 is more vital. The cav fight was far enough away and there were unengaged reserves. On the second day the Union was more tightly stretched.

Custer was an inspiring leader during the Civil War. He shows up at critical points throughout the war up until Lee’s surrender.

      • Don escaped Texas

I’m a big picture guy and a Southerner, so I outgrew that what-ifs of combat at some point: as a kid closely and demonstratively outclassed and outspent in every way, I lost interest in any fantasy that little people like me who are tough and great shots would eventually bring the huge, fat north to the bargaining table. As a native Mississippian growing up in battleground Tennessee, I knew the power, technology, and logistics of Grant’s dive to Shiloh and Vicksburg, the blockades, the retreat from the bluffs at Columbus KY and capitulation of Memphis with barely a shot, and I came to feel and continue to believe 1862-63 was much more Hitler crushing France than battle of equals.

But I also know Agincourt, Yorktown, and San Jacinto should not have happened, either.

  29. Brochettaward

I’m trying to watch Doctor Strange, but I can’t help but pause every few seconds. Like, this shit is beyond retarded. Just really lazy writing, there’s some prophecy now that the Scarlett Witch will destroy or rule the cosmos (which has never been mentioned before this, somehow) and she is made out to be the biggest badass that ever was even though while she was strong in past movies…she sure as shit was never that strong. Only 25 minutes in…

    • Chafed

My daughter loves the MCU. She really enjoyed the first Doctor Strange movie. She saw the second one when it opened. She came home enraged. She hated it. She went off for nearly an hour and then again the next day. It sounds like the writing is flaming garbage.

      • Brochettaward

It is fucking awful, and nothing I had heard about it really prepared me for just how lazy it all is. Like, seriously, there idea of character development is Strange and the little Hispanic girl stepping on a device that shows their most important memories. It’s somehow even cheaper than just an exposition dump. The Marvel thing has succeeded because there was always a plan and they were patient, built things up over multiple movies. There sure as shit does not feel as though there was a real plan for this movie, outside shoving in as much woke bullshit as they possibly could.

We get lesbian Moms, American chavez (who hasn’t annoyed me as much as most diversity castings), a black captain Marvel who is somehow even more hateable than the real one, female captain America…did I mention the lesbian Moms?

If I had paid to see this shit, I’d have walked out.

I think it’s funny that she starts off talking about Title IX. I wonder what her reaction would be if you brought up trannies competing in female sports?

      • Brochettaward

And there are no pro-life women. It is known. Supporting women means agreeing with the progressive hive mind.

      • hayeksplosives

When the pro “choice” changed chicks start hyperventilating about women’s rights, I like to ask them if those rights to choose extend only to female fetuses or also to male.

They typically undergo a brain reset (you can see it happening) and then blunder on about how *those* female lives don’t matter.

      • DEG

Or ask them if women should be allowed to chose to smoke marijuana.

I was always amused by profiles of women on OKCupid that answered yes to “Do you support a woman’s right to chose?” and no to “Should marijuana be legal?”.

My grocery of choice also operates gas stations with “rewards” for customers- if you spend $100 in the store you get $0.10 off a gallon, up to $1.00.
Knowing that profit margins in the grocery biz are razor thin, and they dont really make money on fuel sales, Id love to see how that math works out in their favor.

Head on desk. Why was he invited in the first place?

Old news. The short answer I heard is that the film in question concentrates on what the Feds did to Fuentes with nothing about his views. The Anthem Film Fest (part of FreedomFest) didn’t know Fuentes and didn’t dig into his background. They approved the movie and invited Fuentes for a panel discussion. Then the reason/CATO crowd got involved. The Anthem folks pulled the invitation and the movie.

I just heard today about Witzke. I don’t know much about her or what is going on there.

I think the Anthem folks should have kept the film as part of Anthem. Despite my thinking Fuentes is a piece of shit, he did nothing to rate the treatment the Feds put him through.
