“Economic Freedom Falls in the United States, Global Report Shows”

I just need to look at my bank statements.

    • Count Potato

“Central to economic freedom is the ability of individuals to rely on courts for impartial decisions relating to property disputes. The extent to which government can enforce property rights and contracts in an unbiased manner is key to economic freedom.

So how did the US fare here? Over one year, the US didn’t have much change. The score for the legal system fell slightly, from 7.64 to 7.56.”

Declaring which workers were essential and whether businesses can stsy open wasn’t much of a change?

      • SDF-7

They’re comparing ’22 to ’21, not ’21 to ’20… I think the gov drones were in full on Stasi mode by this time last year, so it is fair to say we haven’t changed that much by not improving that much.

      • Count Potato

“This year’s report covers the year 2020.”

Ok, then “The Hell?!?!?” is indeed the appropriate response. Mea culpa.

Or what it takes to start a business. That is what I use to measure economic freedom. My wife and I have to file with the city, any city we operate in, the county, the State, FedGov….not to include inspections, etc.

I’ve been entertained by the girlfriend complaining about each permit she has to get. She neglected to get an Occupancy Permit from the fire department, and now she’s needing to get another permit for different signs and the like.

      • Seguin

I had to get permission from 6 different city organs to get my current Certificate of Occupancy. Make work BS…most of them didn’t even show up and just signed off on it remotely. Luckily I didn’t have to pay for any of them.

The monkey wrench had nothing on “Tea and No Tea”. But I appreciate that they’re going to try to lay out the puzzle pieces so folks can get it with some logic. It sounds like they’re on the right path, and I’m betting I’ll be trying it when it ships.

Have to confess — mildly enjoyed the first Chevy Chase one back in the day… really have zero interest in the books or a new movie, since the character was fundamentally annoying as hell. That is probably due to how Chevy “Annoying As Hell” Chase played him… but it has seeped into the marrow of my bones at this point.

      • Grosspatzer

I read all the Fletch novels back in the day. IIRC, the first few were pretty entertaining, but the series went downhill in a hurry. I kept waiting for the next one to be better, but it never happened. Carioca, Fletch is in the running for the worst novel I’ve ever read.

      • Sensei

Funny enough so did I. They were considerably different from the film.

I agree that got progressively worse.

      • Fatty Bolger

I read a bunch of the novels decades ago and enjoyed them. I remember prices for things explicitly mentioned a few times, and being amazed at how much inflation had driven prices up since the 70’s.

    Crank up the outrage machine

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) posted a video on Thursday of an exchange with young gun control activists in which the congresswoman appears to kick a woman walking in front of her whom Greene’s staff accuses of impeding her movement.

“These foolish cowards want the government to take away guns & the rights of parents to defend their children in schools,” Greene captioned her video, which shows the congresswoman leaving the Capitol while surrounded by a group of activists asking her questions about gun violence.

“You have to be an idiot to think gun control will create a utopian society where criminals disarm themselves and obey the law,” Greene states.

    ——-

In the video, Greene appears to step on Pecora’s foot as the younger woman walks in front of her before thrusting her leg against Pecora’s to create space for her to walk.

A man next to Greene told Pecora: “You can’t block a member of Congress.”

“Gen Z is fed up with politicians who continue to put our lives in danger, and this aggression is one of the most visible examples yet of what we are up against,” a Voters of Tomorrow spokesperson told The Hill in response to the video.

Greene told the group of activists to move to a country without the Second Amendment if they are concerned about gun safety.

“You guys should move to some country where they don’t have guns,” she said.

No, no, no. That’s not how it works. THEY are in no way obligated to adapt themselves to the world as it exists around them. WE are supposed to cater to their every whim and fear.

    • SDF-7

Always good, you farging icehole. 😉

      • The Hyperbole

That and the “love it or leave it” bit, which is always stupid, is especially so coming from a congress critter, whose entire existence is based on changing things to the way that they think things should be.

I could be wrong but I doubt MTG ran on a platform of “Everything’s perfect lets not change a smidge”

      • MikeS

She most certainly thinks the 2A does not need to be changed, which was the topic at hand when she said they should move.

      • The Hyperbole

The topic doesn’t make it an any less stupid argument.

Okay maybe if the topic is the weather it’s not stupid, If you hate the weather where you live you should probably move since you aren’t changing that, but political and cultural topics are in constant flux and something one can try to effect changes over.

      • Not Adahn

        Nah, it’s not stupid.

“We live like X. Those people live like Y.

I want to live like Y. Therefore everyone currently living like X should be forced to live like Y instead of me just moving over there with the Yers.”

        That’s the stupid argument.

      • The Hyperbole

Except there is no We, X, Them or Y. There’s me, you, and everyone else and there aren’t enough letters to label all the ways to live. There is no homogenized majority, everyone likes some things and dislikes other and almost no two people are going to agree on everything. Would “love it or leave it” have been a good argument to use against the people trying to over turn Roe for the last 50 years?

    Today in value destruction

The Biden administration on Thursday announced several new initiatives to develop technology for massive, floating offshore wind turbines as part of the effort to launch offshore wind in California and elsewhere on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts.

The administration said last year that it was moving to advance offshore wind power on the coast of California for the first time. When developed, the regions selected have the potential to generate enough green energy for up to 1.6 million homes over the next decade, administration officials said at the time.
The deep-water regions off the West Coast — and other coastal areas, including the Gulf of Maine — will require turbines to be installed on floating platforms and tethered to the sea floor. The platforms will also allow turbines to be installed farther from the coast.

US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm estimated floating turbines could unlock up to 2.8 terawatts of clean energy in the future — more than double the country’s current electricity demand.

    \Blow me.

Have you plotted your escape from California yet? I have concluded this state can’t be saved from itself.

      • one true athena

      • Count Potato

      • Gustave Lytton

Technically, without a listed generator inlet with appropriate rating and wiring sized for the same, and a means to prevent backfeeding towards the utility.

      • Gustave Lytton

Also, the cords themselves can have live voltage on the exposed prongs if only one side is plugged into an energized source.

Looks about right. Departing the 1R, built up speed and did about 4000 ft/min climb. Checked Live ATC, but saying that freq was down…which probably wasn’t

      • Ownbestenemy

oops sorry that was the previous flight that they did a 4000 ft/min climb. This one was 3000 ft/min climb. Because they ran the extent of the runway and then climbed, it looked more dramatic IMHO.

      • KK the Porcine Pearl-Eater

        Thanks OBE!

    • Ozymandias

In the late 80’s, the last military jet that could take off in full-afterburner from NAS Oceana was the F-14A+. They had a take-off departure that you had to get through tower because it required ATC clearance known as “an Apollo Longshot.” It was an unrestricted climb out to 38K.

It consisted of much what that Cessna jet did: gear up quick and then flat over the runway to the far numbers on full afterburner – and then pull the stick back and watch the Earth run away beneath you.
I almost shit my pants as a young midshipman, but it was a helluva ride.

In addition, Granholm and White House climate officials announced a new initiative designed to reduce the cost of floating offshore wind energy by over 70%. Granholm called the plan “audacious” and said those cost reductions would be driven by Biden’s recent climate law.

Outgoing White House climate adviser Gina McCarthy called offshore wind a “new American industry that’s really booming” and said the new initiative were designed so the US can try to position itself “to lead the world on floating offshore wind.
