If you happen to be one of those people constantly trying to find items that do not contain rapeseed oil or canola oil, I found something interesting while picking up burger buns the other day.  King’s Hawaiian uses butter! Kamehameha for the win!

Now for Mexican links!

Earfquake!  7.6 magnitude hits Mexico killing 2, but Tres Cool still the hardest hit.  Incidentally, this falls on the anniversary of earthquakes in 1985 and 2017, which means they will find a way to blame it on climate change.

I’m going to call Gabriel Boric Presidente Barista, because he looks like the assistant manager at a Starbucks.  Anyways, he made significant changes to his cabinet after the constitution fallout.

Its probably better this way.  Brandon has bigger things to worry about.

Right.  Human rights violations are why they are worried about Presidente Dudebro winning his reelection.

They picked a hell of a time to end the fuel subsidy.

Another hurricane headed for Puerto Rico.  I look forward to claims of racism when Team Brandon does pretty much nothing.

Here’s a tune I haven’t heard in a while.  Have a great Tuesday!

Up here in The Great White North, you can get commercial mayonnaise made with canola (I know, I know) and olive oil, so that’s a bit of an improvement. But like Ted’s says, “Make your own.” If’n you’ve got a blender, it’s ridiculously easy to do. Tastes great, too.

      • Drake

    • Ownbestenemy

      Wonder what NATO gave him…

      • Semi-Spartan Dad

I read it was originally scheduled for 1700 UTC. Something significant must have happened to delay it. I’m guessing an update with China though rather than NATO.

I think it will be Russia formally declaring war on Ukraine and going full mobilization. The Luhansk and Donetz regions will be recognized as independent countries.

      • R C Dean

I’m guessing the second. Although maybe as some kind of Russian quasi-republic thing – there have been reports of annexation type activity in Eastern Ukraine by the Russians (grain of salt, of course).

I’ll be a little surprised if he goes all the way to full mobilization.

      • R C Dean

I don’t know what full mobilization gets him. Their problems are (a) logistics and (b) leadership. Piling up more troops that can’t be moved or supplied, to be commanded by the same people overseeing the current clusterhump, doesn’t seem like a step forward.

      • Semi-Spartan Dad

From what I’ve read, Russia has been using a fraction of their military strength and taken pains to avoid civilian causalities. For just one example, look how fast the US hit the power grid in Iraq compared to Russia avoiding doing so until last week after months of fighting. They’ve had logistics fuck-ups, but the whole narrative of their invasion of Kiev being blocked and forced into retreat is MSM fiction. Ukraine is lost. They can either capitulate and agree to keep NATO nukes out or eventually Russia will stop fighting with one arm tied behind their back and turn the country to dust.

The US objective is to bleed Russia and loot American taxpayers as much as possible before Ukraine inevitably falls. We’re pouring weapons into Ukraine right now, including long range ones capable of hitting Russian targets. Russia’s had enough of the US interference and is going to end this before we can escalate further. That’s my view on my why they would go full mobilization. No morality about what’s right or wrong… just national strategic interests.

      • R C Dean

I think Russia’s “short victorious war” died on the road to Kiev last spring – why would they have made such a major push (i still think it was the schewrpunkt) if they weren’t planning to take Kiev? I think if they could have pushed further since then, they would have. I think what we are seeing is pretty much what they are capable of – why would they grind it out like this? I think they avoided hitting civilian infrastructure because they were planning on keeping what they conquered and didn’t want to have to rebuild it.

Absent massive Western aid, Ukraine was doomed. But they got the aid, and now the war is stalemated (at best, if you’re Russian). Could Russia still win? Six months ago, I would have said absolutely. Now, I really don’t know. Much turns on what counts as winning, I suppose. And maybe that’s Putin’s game now – formalize the annexation of Donetsk and Luhansk, shift to defense, and call it a victory. Maybe his best option at this point.

But trying to triangulate some approximation of the truth from two competing propaganda streams is a dicey business, so who knows?

      • Semi-Spartan Dad

We’ll see how it plays out. I think the Kiev push was a feint to occupy Ukrainian troops while Russia began their advances in the East and South. It’s notable that the Russian troops pulled back from Kiev and weren’t pushed back. Contrast that with America’s rout from Kabul. Yet despite America being publicly routed by third world tribesman armed with AKs, there is no serious question that our military could have ground Kabul and the entire country of Afghanistan into dust if we chose too. Just because we didn’t doesn’t mean we couldn’t. I think the same applies to Russia. But we’ll see. This winter if Russia does mobilize.

      • Rebel Scum

I agree that Kiev was a feint.

      • R C Dean

An awfully big feint, but certainly possible. The attempt to take the airport with airborne troops isn’t something you do as part of a feint, because if you don’t push your ground troops to the airport, you have thrown those airborne units away, intentionally and by plan, and I don’t think Russia would do that. I also don’t think Putin’s firing and generally meddling with his general staff is something you would see following a successful strategic feint at Kiev. I like the explanation of the opening phase of this war as: the penny-packet attacks in the traditionally contested east were holding attacks to keep reinforcements from going to Kiev, and the main assault was intended to be Kiev to end the war early. I suspect that what actually opened up for Russia as the Ukes fought in the east was the southern corridor, which they took advantage of.

If Kiev wasn’t a feint, but rather Moscow’s attempt at a short victorious war, then pulling back would make sense once it failed. And it did fail, I think; they simply could not move enough troops to the front in Kiev to make a go of it, since they were confined to a very narrow logistics corridor, and one that relied on trucks and roads rather than railways. All across the war, Russia has shown real weakness when they get very far from a railhead. Once they bogged down and couldn’t take Kiev, they really had no option but to pull back.

As always, see above re: propaganda and grains of salt.

      • Rebel Scum

Their parliaments are petitioning to become part of Russia, supposedly.

      • R C Dean

If they become Russian territory, then “full mobilization” conscripts can be used to fight the Ukes there without (formal) full mobilization. But, see above.

NH Judge rules in Manchester School District case

A Hillsborough Superior Court judge has dismissed the lawsuit brought by a Manchester mother who says the school district’s transgender policy is interfering with her rights as a parent, with the judge ruling the mother’s rights as a parent are “not absolute.”

Judge Amy Messer ruled the Manchester School District’s policy directing teachers and staff not to fully and accurately inform parents about their child’s expressed gender identity is fine. Messer ruled parents ultimately do not have the right to direct how their children are to be educated in public schools.

“(T)he right to make decisions about the care, custody, and control of one’s child is not absolute,” Messer wrote.

The mother, who filed the lawsuit under the pseudonym Jane Doe, stated in her original complaint that she found out in fall 2021 that her child was using a different pronoun and gender identity at school. The name of the school was withheld in court documents to protect the child’s identity.

Somebody whacked one of the mufflers on a rock at some point, I’d say. That just goes with the scratches on the sides from driving through the underbrush. Changed fluids in diff and transmission. Who knows when that was done last (at the factory, maybe). The substance which came out of the transmission smelled really really good. “Up to”

General Motors has agreed to sell up to 175,000 electric vehicles to Hertz Global
over the next five years, the companies announced Tuesday.

The deal calls for GM to start supplying electric vehicles such as the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV to the rental car giant starting the first quarter of next year. Those vehicles are expected to be followed by newer EV models on the company’s Ultium battery technology, such as the Chevrolet Blazer, Chevrolet Equinox and vehicles from GM’s other brands.

GM is expected to significantly increase its production of all-electric vehicles in the coming years, as North American output of the cars and trucks — as well as the battery cells used to power them — increases. The company plans to reach production capability of 1 million EVs in North America and China, each, by 2025.

Makes for a good “try it before you buy it” option.

Would you be surprised to know that the American patriots who fought and died in the Revolution were doing it in order for future generations to be forced to sacrifice their labor and earnings for the whims of others? That’s what an environmentalist and open space advocate wrote in our local newsrag as a take down of me for standing up at a meeting and questioning why our township’s voters should pass a tax referendum (increase of 10% for at least next thirty years) on us for a new park that residents of at least five surrounding townships would use but not have to pay for. Of course, the letter writer doesn’t even live in our township! The markets are on quite a tear in the last couple of weeks. The morning news said down something like 7.5 percent in the last 30 days. Great.

I’ll note that I’m _not_ retired, but having “just retired” is worst-case scenario for a major market downturn.

If those people can deal, I can deal – retirement is still years away.

Now move to people who have done their time also.

Tundra, I wanted to listen to the vids, but …so busy

rhywun, you could have gone with industrial and still gone with the step theme.

      • Tundra

        Nice!

      • Ownbestenemy

Amazing to think the man who played Sgt Lipton was in that group.

A former police chief for the town I live in said he thought the prohibition of felons owning firearms was unconstitutional. He told legislators from the town that they needed to fix the state law to repeal the prohibition. I don’t know if he said anything to the state’s Federal legislators.

        Nothing else happened.

      Hah!

      I love the translations.

I made my spicy-hot tuna fish, and it’s more hot than tuna, egg, and cheese combined. I may have to throw some more in there.

      “tuna, egg, and cheese combined”

      Is this something fried?

      • Mojeaux

        No.

        canned tuna fish
        extra sharp cheddar, grated
        hard-boiled egg, sliced or grated
        white onion, diced
        mayo

        paprika
        chili powder
        cayenne pepper
        black pepper
        parsley flakes
        salt

        all to taste

mix well, refrigerate, serve with Wheat Thins

I make it in huge batches, so I mix mine with my hand mixer.

      • rhywun

I saved this earlier but I am still afraid of the tune/cheddar combination. It seems really wrong.

If you leave out the mayo, the egg is raw, then roll in bread crumbs and fry it, that might be good.

      • Mojeaux

I have always had tuna salad/sandwiches/melts with cheese.

      • Lafe Long

I replace the egg with pickles and celery.

    • UnCivilServant

I’m confused. Are you willing to share the recipes?
