Yesterday I got a check engine light.  The freaking communists in the UAW programmed that damn thing to go off on Labor Day.  The one day all the shops are guaranteed to be closed, thus forcing me to go to an authorized dealer if I wanted to get it cleared.  Its a goddamn conspiracy.

Its cool I got it pulled at AutoZone.

Did something happen this weekend?  I keep pulling up news in Latin America and I keep coming up with news of some special election where the communists declared they were “going to the streets” to “defend” the result.

Turns out the result wasn’t quite what they expected.

One of the ironies is the rejected constitution included provisions for  gender parity and women had the right to vote for 70 years…plenty of gender traitors in the midst.

“This is a badly written constitution,” said Carmen Fuentes, 61, who cast her vote in a wealthy north-eastern suburb of Santiago. “There’s been a division in this country for a long time, and this plebiscite won’t change that.”

Many criticised the document’s guarantees for Indigenous people, which they said would divide Chile. Others warned that the shakeup of the political system was unnecessary and experimental.

Want a quick compare and contrast of the current and rejected versions of their government?

The 388-article proposed charter, besides focusing on social issues and the environment, also introduced rights to free education, health care and housing. It would have established autonomous Indigenous territories and recognized a parallel justice system in those areas, although lawmakers would decide how far-reaching that would be.

In contrast, the current constitution is a market-friendly document that favors the private sector over the state in aspects like education, pensions and health care. It also makes no reference to the country’s Indigenous population, which makes up almost 13% of the population.

I mean, fine recognize the existence of Indios…

The reaction is predictable.

Here’s a good rundown of local reactions to the three year process that got them to the point the communists were overwhelmingly voted down 62%-38%.

Enjoy the white pill and have a good tune.

Turns out the result wasn’t quite what they expected.

This was some of the best news I heard when I started paying attention to the internet again after the weekend.

    • Shpip

Yeah, once in a while those chaps from points south surprise you. I allowed myself a grunt of satisfaction not heard since the Nicaraguans picked Chamorro over Danny Ortega back in 1990. ‘Course, that one didn’t last.

  2. Shpip

After the defeat of the new Constitution in Chile, colombian president Gustavo Petro tweeted “Pinochet is alive again”.

    If only.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Pinochet was a cold hearted and bad dude, worse than Corn Pop most likely, but he saved his country from communist hell and that’s OK in my book.

      • Shiny Nerfherder

Corn Pop failed us all when he didn’t beat Joe with Joe’s own pool chain.

      • The Other Kevin

Some people claim that if they had a time machine, they’d kill baby Hitler. Others would hide the pool chain.

      • mexican sharpshooter

I came across a meme where young Hitler only became Hitler because of the number of time travelers that attempted to kill him.

      • rhywun

        LOL

  3. Pat

Its cool I got it pulled at AutoZone.

For the cost involved, a OBDII reader in the junk drawer of your kitchen or glove box of the car is well worth it.

    • Tundra

      I have this one.

It’s just nice to be able to clear codes or determine how bad your problem is.

      • Pat

I opted for a much cheaper model, but it works well enough. Like Timeloose, it’s tipped me off to a couple of bad sensors which were trivial DIY fixes, so it paid for itself the first time I used it.

      • Tundra

I had a cheaper one, but it wouldn’t always read the VW codes.

In fairness, this one won’t always, either, but it’s worked most of the time. We are a Ford, VW, Toyota and Subaru family now, so I wanted one that did more.

      • Pat

I really debated whether to get one of the more full-featured BT models when I bought that one, because you can get real-time performance data as well, which is nice for diagnostics and tuning. But ultimately I decided it would be wasted on my use case. Single guy, one relatively low mileage 2006 Hyundai Elantra beater, not riced. I just need to know if I’m ordering parts or sending it to the scrap yard.

      • Tundra

On my old Tahoe, it didn’t specify which of the four O2 sensors was shitty, so I graphed the four and discovered which one was messed up.

        Goddamn cool, really.

      • Pat

Yeah, that would be really nice for certain vehicles. I had a ’97 Mercury Mountaineer Mutineer, the bastard cousin of the Ford Explorer Exploder. I never realized it had 4 catalytic converters until it threw a code and didn’t specify which of them was faulty…

    • Mojeaux

My husband has one of those. It’s saved our bank account a few times.

    • Timeloose

I got a cheapo one. I’m now the goto person in the family when the dreaded light comes on. It also helps to diagnose minor engine issues and weird or abnormal running. I replaced a lot of 30$ sensors and saved many trips to the 100$/hr. mechanic.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

      +1

The codes don’t really say what the problem is, but they can point you in the right direction. Also, my Abarth throws a code every time my wife stalls the engine, and I’d hate to have to go to Autozone or the dealer to clear it every time.

    • mexican sharpshooter

      Will that clear the code?

      • Pat

Yessir. Mind you, it’ll come back unless you resolve the underlying problem.

      • mexican sharpshooter

Well…the underlying problem is a pretty big one but not until next summer when I need emissions testing.

      • Pat

You can just keep clearing it when it pops up until you’re ready to have the work done. Keeps the annoyance at bay at least.

      • Tundra

Sometimes it’s just a glitch. I’ve cleared codes that never came back.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

You can also clear the codes the way my dad used to do it. Put a piece of electrical tape over the Check Engine Light.

      • Mojeaux

Me to XY while driving: Do you hear that clack-clack-clack in the wheel?

XY: *rolls up window and turns on radio*

        XY: No.

      • Pat

        At least it wasn’t a click-clack

  4. Shiny Nerfherder

It would have established autonomous Indigenous territories and recognized a parallel justice system in those areas, although lawmakers would decide how far-reaching that would be.

I love this type of shit. If a non-resident power can decide your level of autonomy, you’re not actually autonomous. Progs, as always, are idiots unless they’re just lying.

  8. Tundra

Always like to see a little anti-commie pushback.

    • Shiny Nerfherder

The vote marked the climax of a three-year process that began when the country once seen as a paragon of stability in the region exploded in student-led street protests in 2019.

Once again, the education system is working against everyone else. I guarantee those protests didn’t just spring up on their own.

Kate Beckinsale is also holding up quite well, although she’s pretty clearly had some work done and is merely 49 years old.

Maybe I will buy that apartment in El Colorado after all, when I win the lottery.

    • Mojeaux

I like to fantasize about fuck-you money. My wants are few, or at least, they aren’t terribly expensive. A housekeeper would be nice. I’d probably donate to a lot of charities (battered women’s shelters, Habitat for Humanity, tiny homes for homeless veterans, and the arts), and help individuals get back on their feet, when I become aware of them.

      • KK the Porcine Pearl-Eater

I just want to never experience summer again. One house in the Rockies, one house in the Andes, et voila!

      • Zwak. who's suit is as ragged as his nerves.

It is funny. What we would wish for at, say, 25 (basically an Xmas list) vs. what we would wish for at 50 (basically help others.) I don’t need much at this point, or have already gotten it through hard work.

      • Tres Cool

I dont know what the big deal is over “battered” women.
I think they taste just fine raw.

        Well, Squid Game was well-received…

He said the decision may result in “unwarranted expenditures” but coming into full compliance “will not result in a material financial or operational impact” and will not affect its ability to supply LNG to customers and countries around the world.”

They’re still shipping LNG and are going to make a shitload of money doing it.

    • Tres Cool

Im not going to get into the health effects. I DO know from testing many hundreds of turbines that at a low or medium load, they generate tons of NO2, which isn’t good to breathe. So maybe in Cali it would be a bad idea. Nitrogen compounds (NO, NO2, N2O, aka NOx) contribute to ground-level ozone. So again….prolly not great for Cali.
Now in Nevada, Wyoming, or Iowa? Sure.

“Jennifer Lawrence revealed in a recent Vogue interview that she is unable to move past her family’s right-leaning political positions, especially in the wake of the reversal of Roe v. Wade and the birth of her baby son.

She told the fashion mag that her distaste for conservative politics extends past her waking hours – she has nightmares about Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

The 32-year-old actress, who was raised in Kentucky, told Vogue that she has spoken with her therapist about a recurring nightmare of hers that prominently features the immensely popular right-wing commentator….

Tucker Carlson, who boasts the highest nightly ratings of any talk show host on cable, called Lawrence ‘out of touch’ for her views on climate change in 2017. He has never commented on whether or not she is featured in his dreams.”

Good to see people coming to their senses re communists. There is so much BS going around now that I would not be surprised that people lost the taste for “liberalism”.

OT, we had to have our incredibly ancient cat put to sleep last night. Which is not a fun way to end a weekend. But, she was 20+, so not a big surprise. She was a feisty torty to the end, and when that stopped, we knew it was time.

Also, shot trap for the first time in a dozen years, and man do I suck now.

Three more. We adopted a bonded pair as we knew that this would be the second pet death after our dog died last year, and didn’t want to quiet of a house.

      • Mojeaux

        Gilmore’d.

      • mindyourbusiness

Ot: Mo, I need some advice and you have experience in this area. Milady needs a reverse shoulder replacement that will keep her abed/in rehab/generally out of circulation for as long as four or five months. This means that she’ll need me around the house on a semi-permanent basis for an extended period, so I’ll have to give up my present job and find some kind of WFH employment.
You once mentioned you’d done medical coding, so I thought I’d check with you to see just how easy or difficult it is.
Can you enlighten me? Gotta admit, I don’t know diddley about it.

      • Mojeaux

No, I do medical transcription which industry is on life support. Do not do that.

I am taking a course in medical coding (although my studies are on hold at the moment because family drama and I can’t concentrate). I am taking what is probably the hardest (and most expensive) course out there because that school has a good reputation.

However, I found a few YouTuber coders and one is super helpful and has a course, so you don’t have to drop 5 large. Stalk this channel.

When I got my rotator cuff repaired, my doc yelled at me for taking too long between diagnosis and treatment, so I had to do a 3-point repair instead of a 4-point. I was half-abled for weeks, but I could drive because it was my right shoulder and I could reach my gearshift with my left hand. Anyway, he told me it would only last 10 years and I would have to have it replaced. The reverse shoulder replacement was just coming into vogue then and now I understand it’s state of the art.

      • mindyourbusiness

Thanks for the info! Got it saved and I’ll look it over later tonight.

In Milady’s case, well, she’s looking forward and not looking forward to the surgery. Luckily, the firm of orthopods we’re working with are both teachers and practitioners. I hope your doctor was wrong about the rotator cuff repair but as you said, the art’s advanced considerably.

      • Mojeaux

In my shoulder’s case, I had torn it and re-injured it years before. I kept having steroid injections (although they lasted a LOOOOONG time), but then I got the official diagnosis and didn’t feel I could afford the time off. Anyway, so it was about 5 or 7 years from tear to diagnosis, then I waited about 3 years more wih steroid injections because I was doing DIY stuff and whatnot. I was burnin’ daylight, you know???

Then, months later, I had to stop the DIY when I started having certain, ah, women problems, which forced me into surgery, and then after I recovered from THAT, I could no longer lift a framing nailer. That’s when I decided to do it. I waited about 3 years between diagnosis and surgery, about 10 years from injury to repair. I wish I’d just gotten it done when he told me to.

      • rhywun

        20+, wow! Sorry.

      • R.J.

My condolences on the cat. I had to put our old cat down and hated it.

I think people are coming to their senses on all this commie BS. I have volumes of old comic books, they push patriotism, talk about the evil commies/dictators, etc… Always they pushed individual freedom. I miss that. It would be nice to see that kind of pride come back. Not sure how many helicopter rides that will take.

      • EvilSheldon

        Sorry about your kitty.

Cool that you started shooting trap again, though.

      • Zwak. who's suit is as ragged as his nerves.

Well, sort of. I don’t have a trap gun, so used an old hunting shotgun. And trying to load a pump between calls is a pain. But my shooting partner is a duck hunter, so I can see myself being out there more often. I might need to trade into a decent, entry level trap single if I keep this up.

      • Mojeaux

Also, Very sorry about your kitty. We have a long-haired tortie with a bobbed tail. She’s gorgeous, but she’s also a bit tetched in the head.

      • Pat

The walls are closing in. They’re going to get Fauci and Biden. Or not.

Teen #2 mentioned he might be interested in the NatGuard.

While I think military is going to shit, he needs structure and that would benefit him.

    • Tundra

      Steelworker, pipefitter, electrician apprenticeship.

Very challenging, structured and great money.

I recommend being an independent think tank. Great job, great benefits.

      • Pat

Independent drunk tank is even better.

      • Urthona

Nah. I think if you make your hobby your job it eventually feels like real work.

    • Tres Cool

Tres Ver 2.0 keeps mentioning military. As a veteran, I told him “absolutely not” for the simple reason Im not going to bury my kid that got killed in some skirmish in Shitlandia.

*I may be flexible to the CG, Navy, or AF. As long as its not a ‘boots on the ground’ MOS.

**Tres Sr. the navy veteran was supremely pissed when I enlisted for the same “bury…shithole…” reasons.

I remember when the Sandanistas decided to hold elections after they had taken power. There were countless stories in our progressive paper about how everyone loved the Sandanistas and this election would prove it! All those horrible people like Reagan would have to admit that the Nicaraguan people loved socialism.

The people completely let The People down!

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

The People is to people what The Science is to science and Our Democracy is to democracy.

    • Tres Cool

We have some contractors at work from Honduras. I’m going to guess that they have some strong feelings about Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional.
      I’ll also guess that’s why they’re here.

      Awww. That sucks.

      RIP, Minnesoda Man.

      • hayeksplosives

I miss hearing Joe Souchery (Sp?) and his Garage Logic radio show.

What was the name of the crusty ol’ sports guy who called in daily to wrap up Minnesoda sportsball?

      • Tundra

        Patrick Reusse?

      • hayeksplosives

YES!!! I loved his radio segments.

Minnesota was the first “America” I experienced after my college sojourn in Sweden.

I knew no one in Minnesota. I just plunged in. So Garage Logic, radio and Red Green TV show were my touchpoints.

    Rona to the rescue!

Security cameras that scan and record the license plates of every passing vehicle will be installed this month at four intersections in St. Mary’s Point, a small city on the St. Croix River.

The St. Mary’s Point City Council voted 4-1 in June to spend $10,000 a year in COVID funds to install the Flock Safety license-plate readers.

“You listen to the news, and crime is increasing,” said City Clerk/Administrator Cindie Reiter. “We have heard of a lot of petty crimes being committed out in the area.”

City officials hope the Flock Safety Falcon cameras – which will be identified by signs informing motorists that they are being recorded – will act as a deterrent to anyone considering committing a crime in the city, pop. 360. The cameras will not be used for speed-limit enforcement, they say.

LOL. Voting in MA. I gave my street address. The poll worker asks me if I’m [my first name]? I say yes. Then he asks me which ballot I want today Democrat or Republican. I’ve never been asked to show any ID.

    • Tundra

      “Both, please.”

    • slumbrew

      I confess I didn’t bother.

      • grrizzly

I’m afraid that if I don’t show up there won’t be a single Republican ballot cast in my precinct.

      • slumbrew

That’d be a distinct possibility in this ward. Half the ballot slots don’t even have a Republican candidate.

    • rhywun

New York actually does require ID – and they match the signature on your license to the signature on your registration.

Of course, that’s only if you vote in person.

      • Ted S.

        Not in my municipality.

Of course, the election observers are old farts who seem to know everybody in the municipality.

  23. hayeksplosives

Just had a guy from Jacks Appliance repair out to check out our General Electric fridge-freezer that we bought new in May from Home Depot.

He said that GE has become crap, that LG and Samsung have ongoing class action lawsuits against them over their fridges, and that the EPA is pretty much the problem.

Our fridge (unbeknownst to us at the time of purchase) doesn’t use Freon, it uses propane. Which causes condensation on every joint. There’s copper and steel combos caused galvanic coupling and corrosion, combined with the water condensate and just dissolves the whole damned system. He said we could get it repaired but that it would inevitably break down again. He then used his service computer to look up all “known problems” with that model and listed them off to me, recommending I call GE armed with all the facts and demand a refund.

Then he checked out our microwave (a Kenmore) from 2004 that crapped out a couple of weeks ago. They don’t make the magnetron for that model anymore.

He said we should consider only three brands: Amana, Maytag, and Whirlpool. He said Kenmore is now LG and sucks.

This technician is a Mexican immigrant, highly skilled, certainly not a xenophobe. He mildly ranted about the EPA, Chinese crap parts, the abandonment of pride in craftsmanship.

Yeah, I gave him a good cash tip as he left.

    • kinnath

My LG stuff is working pretty good so far — washer, drier, and stove.

The Kenmore Fridge and Dishwasher are now 17 years old. It’s just a matter of time before they crap out.

      • R.J.

Danger! My LG dishwasher snuffed right out of warranty. All my other LG appliances are lasting well, over 13 years old.

    • Shiny Nerfherder

Get the Panasonic inverter microwave at Costco. I think it’s $200 and it works great. You can actually scale the field for lower power cooking instead of the off/on method regular microwaves use.

      • Name's BEAM. James BEAM.

The Inverter tech for the Panasonic microwaves is da bomb. Its ability to drop the microwave tube down to a lower continuous power changes almost everything about microwave cooking and reheating for the better.

We’d probably still be on our first Inverter (bought back in the mid-90s) if it hadn’t been for the fact that we kept moving and all our sales agreements specified that we leave behind all the appliances.

    • Ownbestenemy

We use Bob’s Repair…not sure they go our that way but probably best appliance techs ever.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

I wonder if that propane is concentrated enough to be a fire hazard if it springs a leak from all that corrosion.

      • hayeksplosives

Yeah, the tech said that they are required to use all “brushless” tools when repairing them due to the fire hazard. They have to run a long-ass vent hose out of the house while working on it.

        But, Mother Gaia and all!!

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

Well that’s going to lead to some exciting times for people doing DIY repairs.

    • rhywun

      Amana, Maytag, and Whirlpool

Interestingly, these are all under Whirlpool now.

My cheap Whirlpool has been running fine for 10 years with no sign of aging.

    • Semi-Spartan Dad

He said we should consider only three brands: Amana, Maytag, and Whirlpool.

I reached the same conclusion. The appliances were all very old and at the end of life when we moved in here so I replaced everything. The new Samsung fridge died out of warranty at 3 years. The GE dishwasher and washing machine each made it about 4 years, if that. I replaced it all with Whirlpool or Maytag (I think it’s the same company). Their appliances automatically come with a 10 year warranty on parts.

After the fridge from Lowes died at 3 years with no recourse, I shifted to only buying major appliances at Costco. Automatic 4 year warranty and can extend that to 7 years for an extra hundred dollars.

    • Mojeaux

      Speed Queen.

Husband bought Whirlpool for our new-to-us place. I have no complaints, but Speed Queen was 3x the price. If we could have afforded that, we would have done that.

    • Zwak. who's suit is as ragged as his nerves.

I always enjoyed working on appliances. The only issue with that is finding a supplier that will sell to consumers. Even with an EPA license, they still balk at selling me refrigerants.

Fucking storm split one of my orange scorpions plants in half. 😵 😥

One of my poor pepper plants got beaten into the ground by the rain, I think. Amazing considering I put it under a tree.

    True?

Its cool I got it pulled at AutoZone.
