The Treasure Valley is a bowl. And we get annual summer inversions, which is a cover on the bowl. The smoke from all of these fires funnels right in and hangs out. Tell that to your friends who are thinking about moving here. If it’s not frozen, it’s on fire.

Putin has Ukraine right where he wants them!
It’s a good thing they’re providing relief from the high taxes and cost of living…
I am sick and tired of hearing about the “gun violence epidemic”. Oh, wait.
Okay, peace out Glibbies. This seems appropriate.
I don’t care about Ca!ifornia. The whole state is a fucking punchline.
I lived in the Bay Area for 45 years. It really pisses me.
My family has been in the bay area for 150 years at this point.
And yes, it really, really pisses me off.
I’ve been here 31 years. It’s past time to go. This state is determined to ruin itself.
33 years in Washington, time to leave here too.
51 years in New York….
Over 36 years in the Bay Area now. Coincidentally, today I ran into someone that I knew in my first days there, when living in San Francisco. I hadn’t seen her in person for 35 years. That was an enjoyable, unexpected meeting, and reminded me of how things once were.
But yeah, it’s depressing. San Francisco in the 1980s and 1990s was hella fun, a big city that seemed like a small town in so many ways, because everyone lived in small, quirky neighborhoods, and it was so easy to interact and meet tons of interesting people. It’s almost unrecognizable by comparison today. We could see it coming, so I’m glad we moved out o the city proper in 1999 into the burbs. Zero interest in ever moving back into “The City”.
I do care about hot Swedish women.

Not all Swedes are blondes.
I knew a brunette Swedish lass through Swing dancing. She was in the Boston area for the summer working an internship at some tech company whose name escapes me. I should have asked her out but I did not.

In what universe is a purely symbolic vote (and known to be such at the time), the most important vote of their career?
Unless all their votes are essentially symbolic, that is . . . .
It’s the most important when it serves the writer’s interest.

Who can argue with that?
I thought NM was the land of enchantment.
Have you seen it lately?
Yes. In July.

I’m sure there is no way that Zelensky will ever regret uttering these words. None whatsoever…
So we can stop throwing billions of dollars at him, right?
It’s a play for more money and I would not be surprised if those 30,000 troops are considered completely expendable.
30,000 troops and their best armored vehicles, courtesy of the US taxpayer, all clustered in a tight spot. I’d imagine someone in the Russian command is considering deploying some of their tactical battlefield nukes. Wipe out the western supplied vehicles while sending a warning to NATO against further interference.
Nukes, even tactikool, would bring the western powers so quickly that it would ensure WWIII.
I don’t see America launching ICBMs over a battlefield nuke confined to Ukraine, but I could be wrong. Some of the American pols are certainly sabre rattling enough about it.
Europe is about to commit suicide this winter. Their troops will be needed at home protecting the governments that are threatening to throw their own citizens in jail who heat their home over 66 degrees.
ICBMs? No. But I can defiantly see a sortie of B52’s over Moscow.
I had hoped for deescalation and negotiation as it became apparent that Russia held the cards, but it appears that there are still some players willing to throw Hail Marys, damn the consequences.
Russia’s hand is declining in quality.
Nuking a country you’ve invaded during a war of aggression would likely mean that whoever is wavering on sanctions and whatnot, stops. And not in the way Putin wants.
I’d bet Zelensky’s showed his back to a lot of people but, that being said, Russia’s getting fucked up right now. If they’re setting a trap (I seriously doubt it but maybe they’ll surprise me) they’re pulling a fast one on the Alexander the Great level of military genius. Possible? Maybe. Likely? Hell no…Shugoi ain’t Zhukov.
It looks like the Russian army is being exposed for what it currently is. Decades of cronyism in contracting are taking their toll.
That’s just on the supply side. Poor doctrine and even worse manning.
Undoubtedly.
I have not been studying the conflict deeply, but I have to question the ability of the Ukrainians to hold any gains they’ve been making regardless of whether they caught the Russians with their pants down or not in a poorly defended area. This was not some great victory against the bulk of Russian troops, but an issue where Russian forces seemed to have been spread too thin. They, the Ukrainians, identified a weak spot in the Russian lines and pushed – perhaps too far, with the bulk of their forces. It does not need to have been a great Russian trap for it to turn into one in short order once the Russians move some forces around.

Carryover from ded thread
Our road trip seems to be back on track. We will be in Pahrump next Saturday and Albany, OR on the 20th.
Zwak, I sent you an email. I’m assuming that your reference was to their mail service.
I’m in Fairbanks Sep 19-23 not exactly sure of my return schedule. (Project dependent)
Nice choice in music, Spud. Appropriate for the moment.
And now, the lynx…
Yesterday sucked. I drove past the fire in Malheur County on my way to Portland a week ago, just after it started. I drove back on Thursday, and it was still running around.
I’m confused, that’s sort of normal. Spud, I thought you were in NY. Am I misunderstanding? Two homes?
Yeah. Chewy air is fun.
Still better than last year. Whatever burned up triggered the old hay fever, which lasted through the end of October. It was no fun.
I like Deep Purple. I saw them in concert, once. I have a bunch of their albums ranging back to the 60’s, including Machine Head.
But, dammit, “Smoke on the Water” was on endless loop during the 70’s. Every single bar band included it because of its heavy bass line and lack of complexity.
It’s one of those “change channels now” when it pops up on the radio. It was loved to death.
One of my prof’s back in the eighties was at the concert that Smoke on Water was about.
“Profs”, not “Prof’s”. WTF is wrong with me?

It’s probably the earliest song I can remember – yeah, it was in constant rotation on the rawk station my older brothers listened to.
I had it on 45 and played it constantly.
I took me a while to understand why it sounded different some times when I played it. There were two versions of it on the 45. The radio version was on the A side and a second version on the B side.
Will there be a Zoom this evening?
Good question.
I’m not sure if Neph set up his Zoom to auto-start. I’ll wait until 20:02 Eastern, then I’ll start one and post the linky here if his not up.

I also hope he is recovering.

On Zoom last night he said he had a cold.
Although SGMA’s regulations are for the greater good—achieving sustainable water use in a progressively unpredictable climate—they are likely to have negative effects on the ground.
To be sure.
If the land is simply taken out of production and left unused, SGMA’s climate-adaptation goals could worsen existing environmental injustices in the area’s frontline communities.

Heads up for gun owners. Credit card and bank transactions will now be categorized as firearms and ammo instead of outdoor equipment.
I predict an uptick in cash transactions at local gun shops.
I saw that: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/sep/10/guns-credit-card-trackable
Ban cash, duh
Ban bans.
Perhaps they shrugged it off because blaming them is an absolutely moronic assertion in a world where one with a debit card can easily extract cash with it and make a purchase that way, regardless? Even just a cursory look at the Credova angle to the Uvalde shooter pulls up no evidence that the retarded sociopath in question actually used a payment plan to purchase any of his weapons.
But it’s been proven time and time again that the particular weapon used does not necessarily make the attack more deadly. The Uvalde shooter could have done all the damage he did that day with any cheap firearm. Or, as has happened in other parts of the world, a machete. Or a car etc.
Or fire. Or a kitchen knife.
e-checks.
I have made silver purchases with e-checks to avoid charges for credit cards.
I expect gun and ammo sales will move this direction.
I believe Buds does that, with discounted pricing for using a check or maybe it’s direct withdrawal.
Yes, I know Buds does that. I have done it through them. There is a delay in shipping for the fund transfer to occur as I recall. But there is a discount.
The FDA gets pwned.
I’m on Vinay Prasad’s email list — he has a lot of good evidence-based analysis of COVID.
Prasad makes a lot of good points but people have been saying much of what he says since 2020.
I find his need to say ‘I’m a Democrat and this is a Democrat perspective so you know I’m not crazy’ line a bit annoying and unnecessary.
I wouldn’t be telling people you’re a Democrat these days given it’s the party of retards and the mentally ill.

As Sweden votes on Sunday in parliamentary elections, gun crime looms large for a country more commonly associated with its high living standards, women’s rights and welcoming asylum policies.
I thought Sweden had strict gun control? How could this have happened?
Side note: I know Sweden used to believe in armed neutrality (full disclosure: I have three Swedish Mausers in my gun (I almost typed “fun”) collection), though firearms were kept in arsenals unlike Switzerland where soldiers took their guns home.
Sweden needs to implement grenade control along with that gun control.

… a diversifying country and a failure to integrate immigrants, especially those who arrived in Sweden during Europe’s migration crisis in 2015.
Would those be the immigrants that had no interest in integrating into a western society? Whose failure, exactly?
Sweden’s responsibility to make them want to join in, or else, to keep them out. You have a responsibility to defend yourself…
I would personally like to make any open border libertarian live in a community of Muslim “migrants” in Europe for a few months and see if their position holds. It is my least libertarian position at this point.
It aint even just the crime that they bring. That’s the tip of the iceberg and kind of a norm with immigrant communities. These are people who have no and never will have any desire to assimilate to their host country.

We had an extended heat wave in NorCal this week, with our outdoor thermometer in the shade topping 100 degrees on three different days, and 90s on two more. But tonight the remnants of Hurricane Kay are drifting by, and so we’re getting a few sprinkles of rain, usually we don’t get rain between May and November. Strangest first ten days of September here we’ve ever seen.

Morning, UCS.

Political Climate seems to continue to degrade. I fear the FBI will start arresting people for voting republican.
Political Class seems to be ecstatic that Ukrainians are pushing Russians east. I fear what happens when Putin uses a nuke or two.
Charles III seems rather happy that his mom died. Its already going to his head.
I saw Charles was outside, with people. No masks and shaking their hands. He’s gonna die of Covid.

Been trying to catch up on the Izyum push by Ukraine. There seems to be some speculation that the Russians just gave up the territory as it wasn’t worth defending, that seems questionable.
But it does appear that it’s hardening resolve in Russian public opinion which means that the nationalists to the right of Putin are going to have more sway. I expect there will be a significant escalation very shortly. I just don’t know what form it will take. One thing is for certain though, the rhetoric out of Russia now openly states NATO is the enemy and that is not a good thing.
just gave up the territory
I don’t follow that war, but I saw it implied yesterday that the Russians abandoned ten tanks that were quite nice.
According to this fellow who’s pretty good Putin’s primary motivator for conducting the war thus far has been avoiding Russian casualties:
