Tuesday Morning Links

Game over.

The Cowboys took down the Giants. And that backup would give me more confidence at QB than I’ve had in a while if I were a Dallas fan. Aaron Judge is stuck on 60. And there’s still some life in the baseball playoff races, albeit just the NL wild card and NL East races. A man takes a stand. And that’s it for sports.

In the words of our British friends: piss off. I know they’re trying to get those mass mail-in vote programs up and running before the midterms, but we’re not buying the bullshit.

Hurricane Ian pummels western Cuba. Next stop Florida. Stay safe, dear friends in the Sunshine State. Especially Brett L and his family.

OK. I don’t care.

Hey, only our ship are allowed to do that! Oh wait, there’s this thing called international waters. So stop stoking fear and banging the war drums, ok? We do this shit every minute of every day around the world.

LOL, well this is a weird one. I suppose the judge is right. It was obviously a gift and his possession. And the law is the law. Bonus points for it being Utah, which will drive the left bananas and invoke fears of the an impending Handmaiden’s Tale-like hellscape.

Reopen the loony bins. Or do something. This shit is spiraling out of control.

If at first you don’t succeed… I respect her drive, but damn, that energy to win a contest could have been put into something else a lot more productive, no? Also, hilarious lede. She never mentions LatinX once yet the writer crams the nonsense word into the top of the article.

The risks of having an energy monopoly rear their ugly head. Competition breeds competence. Also, I’m curious if California’s state policies regarding mitigation strategies also played a role. No wait, I’m not wondering that. I know they always contribute to these things.

Hilarious.

What a freaking joke. The publicity stunt backfired spectacularly yet they’re gonna forge on with an even stupider set of rules. I can’t wait fore these morons to be voted out of office…which will probably never happen.

Here’s a polarizing band. They had a few good ones though. That’s one. And here’s another. There’s a couple more, but that’s about it. Anyway, enjoy them.

And enjoy this Tuesday. And keep your fingers crossed or say a prayer for our friends in Florida.

“The suspect, 41-year-old Waheed Foster, has a lengthy criminal history, including a bust for beating his grandmother to death in 1995 when he was just 14. ”

Maybe no loony bins, but just put violent criminals in prison.

    • AlexinCT

The only crimes the left feel deserve long prison times are for their political enemies. Everything else should be decriminalized so the left can stop worrying about when they truly let their hair down and show how fucking immoral and evil they are (thing sex with young kids), nobody has the ability to call them out on it. Pedo Peter approves.

From some of the anecdotes in the article, seems like he might be “criminally insane”. I don’t know what the answer is, but something ain’t right when this guy gets to randomly attack strangers every so often.

Depends on the state. Many states have recently written laws to prohibit that.

Is this like the Chinese space program from back in the Cold War days?

If I recall correctly, an American, Soviet, and Chinaman were taking a ride on a train when the American and Soviet got into it about their space programs. the Soviet mentioned Sputnik, being first in space, their space station, and the great ability of the Rodina in that space, only to have the American snort at him and point out that the US had landed numerous missions on the moon and had a space station that made theirs look like junk. As they started yelling at each other the Chinaman asked them to pipe down, at which point they told him to shut the fuck up because China had no space program at all, and was a backward country.

The Chinaman, not wanting to be outdone blurted that the Chinese space program sent men to the sun. Both the Soviet and American, looking on incredulously pointed out sending any spacecraft to the sun was a death sentence and idiotic, only to have the Chinaman puff out his chest and yell: “China is not a nation of imbecils, we sent the probe to the sun at night!”…..

The interesting development is that Hill-bot has distanced herself from the demonization of MAGA Republicans. The wicked witch is moving to the center and obviously wants to run in 2024.

Could we get another Trump/Clinton showdown? I don’t think I could take any more. I might have to leave the country.

      • Count Potato

I hope neither gets the nomination. If one of them does, the other candidate will win.

“But when you have a MAGA Republican agenda that has no respect for the Constitution, that has no respect for free and fair elections, then it is important for all of us, not just the president, not just me, for all of us to call it out for what it is. It is a danger to our democracy, it is a danger to our way of life.”

      All progjection, all the time.

That is literally the opposite of what MAGA people stand for.

Looks like Bill Maher’s request for the economy to tank has come about. It just took the orange guy to be removed so the cabal could go back to running roughshod over the reality our government was run by inept and evil credentialed assholes without any serious grip on reality.

    • Shiny Nerfherder

The era of the Fed Put appears to be over. Powell isn’t coming to rescue the economy, he’s decided to try to save the dollar instead.

The problem is that Congress hasn’t come to terms with that yet and continues to spend like drunken sailors.

      • AlexinCT

They still have a printing press with ink & paper, so they are fine (like the old lady with the checks still in her checkbook and no money in her bank).

      • Shiny Nerfherder

Without the Fed’s cooperation, they don’t have jack shit.

It seems the Fed has realized that the dollar is on the path to no longer being the global reserve currency and if they don’t shore it up now, it will go Zimbabwe as all those eurodollars (dollars outside the US finance system) come flooding back.

The corollary to this is that the ECB is fucked six ways to Sunday as the Fed isn’t going to bail them out.

Our neighbor to the north has a big kennel of sled dogs. His run more to the “mutt” side. We can tell when it’s feeding time morning and evening, because they get excited and kick up quite a racket.

We all know the saying “When you owe the ban $25k, the bank owns your ass and you have a real problem if you can’t pay. When you owe the bank $25 million, the bank has a problem”, and it looks like the CCP is finding that adage out.

That whole Belt & Road project was about using debt to fuck over the less developed nations – kind of just like what the world monetary bank system does with their loans, but that’s us, so it is fine – and force them to become beholden to Beijing. Apparently the CCP could be shamed about doing this shit. Who knew?

    • Shiny Nerfherder

Watch what happens with the $1T that Italy owes under TARGET2 to the ECB. I guarantee that van der Leyen is going to try to use that as a crowbar to get Meloni’s compliance.

The question is whether Italy will just tell them to fuck off and default on it.

      • AlexinCT

Brussels is going to have to make an example of the paisans, like they did with the Brits on Brexit, cause if they don’t show there will be consequences for the serfs getting uppity, this will encourage other nations to follow Italy’s example and scorn the masters in Brussels.

  10. Count Potato

“As a gesture, he said Marsh should take the book back to the original photographer, and have a copy made, with her body edited out.

Marsh went to the photographer, but the photographer refused, arguing that the images were art which should not be altered.

The judge then ruled, in August this year, that Marsh must hand the album to a third party, who would themselves edit the images.

‘That person is to do whatever it takes to modify the pages of the pictures so that any photographs of [Lindsay Marsh] in lingerie or that sort of thing or even without clothing are obscured and taken out,’ he wrote in a ruling shared with The Salt Lake Tribune.

When the original photographer found out, she agreed to edit the photos.”

Sounds like everyone here is a petty asshole.

      IT’S ART, MAN!

To me it seems like the gal was a pain in the ass when she showed up at the photographer’s place. Probably made all sorts of demands (for free of course) and the photog told her to go pound sand.

The judge’s order probably meant that the photog could get paid.

  11. Drake

Both Nordstream pipelines now leaking. Obviously sabotage.

    I suspect this guy.

Amazing how badly they want WWIII. And they just fucked Germany permanently. Why are the Germans putting up with our deliberate destruction of their economy? That Green government is going to collapse and their replacement isn’t going to be friendly at all.

    • Shiny Nerfherder

      It certainly wasn’t the Russians.

The US is fucking the EU like a five dollar whore.

      • AlexinCT

You do get those $5 dollar hos for a specific reason, though, right?

    • Name's BEAM. James BEAM.

As usual, eugyppius brings other possible reasons into the discussion: false flags are of course mentioned, as well as the speculation that the sabotage was carried out on behalf of the German government, which now has an excellent excuse to ignore the cries of their people to turn the gas back on as winter deepens.

If the latter speculation is indeed true, then governments really do see their citizens as nothing more than tax-paying meat puppets whose welfare is none of their concern.

Winter just became much more frightening for the Europeans.

      • Drake

Perhaps Poland – their current government seems very hostile to Germany. The stupidity seems contagious.

Practical question for the glibs, whomever may have some experience with this:

I mentioned before I do not have a clothes drier. I have been thinking about purchasing one. My question is: there are some combo washing machine driers, do those work as well or is it better to have a standalone drier? Also is it worth to spend a little extra, or any old drier works… e.g there are 300 dollar driers, there are 600 dollar driers

    • AlexinCT

Don’t buy the combo machines unless you also buy a 5 or more year warrantee and/or maintenance plan. Those duo machines are prone to failures, and the parts, being dual, cost an arm and a leg to replace. If your concern is space, buy the stacked machines, which also can be a bit more expensive, but far less than the duo ones.

    • Shiny Nerfherder

Driers are far less complicated than washers. Spending more doesn’t really get you much.

      • AlexinCT

He should worry about the dryer’s energy consumption though. If it is inefficient and uses a lot of electricity, or worse, it is a gas dryer, Pie might be left holding a big energy bill.

      • Sean

Ours came with the house. I think it’s a Kenmore. It was old when we moved in. I think it’s original to the house, which means it’s 18 years old and still going. We’ve had to spend a couple bucks on washer repair…

    • Cowboy

When I lived in China I had a combo machine, it was terrible. I believe it was a Bosch, although it could have been samsung, its been a while.

I wound up air drying my clothes more often than not. The dryer just didnt have any heat to it. Everything would stay moist and get as wrinkled Biden skinsuit.

      • R.J.

^This! In order to wash and dry blue jeans, you are looking at 6 hours of time. You can’t run any parallel loads because the washer is also your dryer. So you lose efficiency two ways. Not a fan. If space is tight just get an over/under.

    • Gustave Lytton

Combo units are virtually unknown in the US.

      • R.J.

It’s not that they are unknown. Colorado has them in a lot of places. The Stanley Hotel residences have them, for example. The only way anyone would buy one is regulations. Otherwise, they slow your cleaning work to a crawl. So since they are not mandated or otherwise pushed, people choose a much more time efficient option.
Aw damn. I just did an “Ackshually.”

    • PieInTheSky

hmm thanks I need to see where to put it… I think I can bring my wine fridge from the pantry to the living room and put the drier there

      • Nephilium

Why not just put them in your laundry room?

        /flaunts US privilege.

    • Sean

What you really need is a GF to do your laundry.

      • PieInTheSky

that still does not dry the clothes faster

      • invisible finger

What you need is orphans to run around outside with the wet clothes. That will dry them cheaply.

    • straffinrun

Ive got a combo washer/dryer. About $1200. The dryer is almost worthless.

      • AlexinCT

Does your wife know you talk about her this way, Straff?

    • Rebel Scum

I recently got a new washer and dryer for $1400 or so. Probably worth spending $500-600 for a dryer.

  13. Rebel Scum

There are signs that the United Kingdom could be heading into a fall Covid-19 wave, and experts say the United States may not be far behind.

We used to just call it flu season.

Now we call it election season.

      • Shiny Nerfherder

      • trshmnstr the terrible

Yes, but it’s rectally administered and costs trillions of dollars.

    • AlexinCT

Yeah, but selling the rigging of another election for fear of flu, is not gonna work…

    • Sean

      Or back to school season…

      Kids are the worst.

  14. Ozymandias

Damn. Those are some spicy links.
I think you’re right about the photo album, but it’s pretty shitty of the ex (and the judge). Yes, technically, a gift. It reminds me of a fellow lawyer’s story about a divorce client (man) who was willing to pay my friend $3K to fight over an $800 kayak – because “she CAN’T HAVE IT!!!” I will never do another DR case in my life. Never, never, never ever.

I lived along that A-train route that went to Howard Beach in 1985-86. Back then it was getting pretty bad and then came Bernie Goetz.
There was also that Howard Beach racial incident where white kids killed some black kids who broke down in HB.
I guess the silver lining for this woman is that at least it wasn’t WHITE SUPREMACY WUT DONE IT!

The Houston gun buyback thing is funny because one of the loudest Prog 2A talking points is about GHOST GUNZ(!!!). So this guy gives them exactly what they claim is the problem, but now they’re pissed about it. It’s the perfect illustration of how they’re never happy, even when you give them exactly what they say they want (and is their claimed “source” of the “problem.”)
Gun-grabbers lie – that’s all they fucking do.

  15. The Late P Brooks

    insd of the fathers

In general, the party’s neo-fascist roots appear to be of more concern abroad than at home. Some historians explain that by noting a certain historical amnesia here and Italians’ general comfort living with the relics of fascism as evidence that Italy never really repudiated the Fascist Party and Mussolini in the same way Germany repudiated National Socialism and Hitler.

While Germany went through a long and painful process reckoning with its past, Italians have in many ways simply turned a willful blindness to their own.

Historian David Kertzer of Brown University notes that there are 67 institutes for the study of the Resistance to Fascism in Italy, and virtually no center for the study of Italian Fascism.

In addition, Mussolini-era architecture and monuments are everywhere: from the EUR neighborhood in southern Rome to the Olympic training center on the Tiber River, with its obelisk still bearing Mussolini’s name.

More anguished handwringing over the fascist takeover of Italy.

Any day now the Jews will be expropriated and the dark skinned immigrants will be whipped into slavery.

Meloni, who proudly touts her roots as an MSI militant, has said the first spark of creating Brothers of Italy came after Berlusconi resigned as premier in 2011, forced out by a financial crisis over Italy’s soaring debt and his own legal problems.

Meloni refused to support Mario Monti, who was tapped by Italy’s president to try to form a technocratic government to reassure international financial markets. Meloni couldn’t stand what she believed was external pressure from European capitals to dictate internal Italian politics.

A woman has been hospitalised after her daughter’s dog accidentally defecated on her face while she was asleep.

Amanda Gommo, 51, spent three days in hospital after Belle, a chihuahua, had a ‘little accident’ on her face, including in her mouth, causing her to become violently ill and requiring medical treatment.

Ms Gommo, from Bristol, said she was cuddling the dog while taking an afternoon nap, when it became ill and had ‘violent diarrhoea’, with some of the excrement falling into her mouth.

He continued, “When I see our arch enemy Russia and the sociopath Putin using that same conservative as propaganda, you should know about it and maybe get to him and tell him to stand down because, in all things, nuclear caution upfront is the best way to avoid total annihilation at the back side of these issues.”

    • Pope Jimbo

Are you saying I shouldn’t believe a guy who worked his entire career in the CIA when he Snowden is a traitor and his new Russian citizenship proves that?

The unclassified portion of the House Intelligence Committee report was silent on the issue of whether Snowden was recruited by a foreign intelligence service. As I explained in my 2016 article, several other former CIA officers and I have long believed this. Putin’s decision to grant Snowden Russian citizenship – almost certainly at Snowden’s request – probably confirms our belief.

Let’s hope a future Russian government quickly deports Edward Snowden to the United States so he can stand trial for the damage he did to our national security.

What is missing is the fact that no one disputes that the documents Snowden leaked were all true. That the intelligence agencies were illegally snooping. So who cares if Snowden was a spy or not? He exposed govt wrongdoing and we should thank him.

      • Shiny Nerfherder

Let’s hope a future Russian government quickly deports Edward Snowden to the United States

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) admitted Monday that he was caught by surprise when Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and other Senate Republicans decided to oppose his permitting reform bill, which means it will likely fail on the Senate floor this week.

Manchin said he expected Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), an outspoken progressive, and other “far-left” liberals to oppose his legislation to limit federal agency authority to review new energy projects but was stunned when Republicans also came out in opposition last week.

“I never did think I’d have Bernie and some of the extreme far left,” he told Fox News host Neil Cavuto in an interview Monday. “What I didn’t expect is that Mitch McConnell and my Republican friends would be sacking up with Bernie or trying to get the same outcome by not passing permitting reform.”

Why would those Republicans do something like that to a guy who just wants to be loved?

  26. The Late P Brooks

Manchin warned that this week’s vote in the Senate could be the last chance of passing permitting reform for the foreseeable future and expressed dismay that his bill is now likely to go down in defeat because Republicans are angry he cut a deal with Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) to reform the corporate tax code and pass hundreds of billions of dollars to fight climate change.

In her 2016 essay “The Belly of the World”, the American scholar Saidiya Hartman writes about this paradox: that the black woman’s caring labours are both the product of slavery and a means of survival; a refuge, a creative source of sustenance, in the face of that same violence. “This brilliant and formidable labour of care,” Hartman writes, “paradoxically, has been produced through violent structures of slavery, anti-black racism, virulent sexism, and disposability.” Lewis handles this complexity with sensitivity, and yet comes to a stark conclusion: even when the family is a “shield that humans have taken up to survive a war”, we still must come to believe that the war does not have to go on forever. “What would it mean not to need the Black family?”, she asks, by which I think she means: how might we imagine a world in which we don’t need to take refuge from each other?

Been offline for a few days. Sorry if this was already posted.

From Ready.gov, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s disaster-preparedness website:

Nuclear explosions can cause significant damage and casualties from blast, heat, and radiation but you can keep your family safe by knowing what to do and being prepared if it occurs: . . .

Get inside the nearest building to avoid radiation. Brick or concrete are [sic] best.

Remove contaminated clothing and wipe off or wash unprotected skin if you were outside after the fallout arrived. Hand sanitizer does not protect against fall out. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, if possible. Do not use disinfectant wipes on your skin.

Go to the basement or middle of the building. Stay away from the outer walls and roof. Try to maintain a distance of at least six feet between yourself and people who are not part of your household. If possible, wear a mask if you’re sheltering with people who are not a part of your household. Children under two years old, people who have trouble breathing, and those who are unable to remove masks on their own should not wear them.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, the fireworks ban was the topic for most of those speaking, with the overwhelming majority in attendance voicing their opposition to the ban.

Some members of the council countered with communication they had received in support of the ban.

Public comment taking is a sham and a fraud. It’s just like when agencies do rulemaking. Comments are ignored in favor of what the government entity already wants to do. The only silver lining is if some point isn’t addressed, it can be potential litigated.

    • Rat on a train

Scientists set out to investigate the potential association between a meatless diet and depression among adults, surveying 14,216 participants aged 35 to 74 years over six months. They were evaluated using the Clinical Interview Schedule-Revised instrument, a tool used to diagnose common mental health disorders. “That New Report On Incels Is A Cherry-picked, Misleading Mess

Incels are creepy, frequently offensive, and occasionally violent, but this is exceptionally poor and politicized research

How scared should you be of “incels”?

Very, if a new report (PDF) from the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) is any indication. This is a very important report that we should all pay attention to, according to the alarmed media coverage it garnered in outlets like The Washington Post, The Hill, and Insider…

The report is titled “The Incelosphere: Exposing pathways into incel communities and the harms they pose to women and children.” Very scary stuff from the CCDH’s “Quant Lab.”

There’s a large warning sign very early on in this report. The authors note that “The Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) said in March 2022 that incels are a rising threat in the US.” Wow — incels are such a big problem that the Secret Service is singling them out? Scary, if true. But it isn’t true. The citation points to an NTAC case study about a horrible incident: “On November 2, 2018, a 40-year-old gunman opened fire inside Hot Yoga Tallahassee, a yoga studio in Tallahassee, FL, killing two women and injuring four more before committing suicide.”

Toiletries. Toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, cotton swabs, shaving lotion, disposable razors, shampoo, individually packaged tissues.

Personal care. Individually packaged baby wipes, eye drops, lip balm, lotion, aspirin or another pain reliever, feminine hygiene products for women.

Foot care. Moleskin, medicated foot powder and athletes foot ointment.

Disposable hand warmers. Send these during the winter if your service member is in a cold climate. Also, fingerless gloves, stocking caps and long underwear are good ideas.

Goggle-style sunglasses. Your service member will appreciate these if he or she is deployed in the desert.

Cotton socks and underwear. Make sure the garments are made of 100 percent cotton rather than a cotton blend.

In both Italy and Sweden immigration was the big issue pushing voters away from social democrats, a societal-altering change which even the most agreeable and conformist of Nordic might eventually question the benefit of.

While the continent moves to the Right, in Britain post-pandemic immigration is running at a record one million per year, and the Government has just announced plans to make free movement even easier. In the years following Brexit, contrary to the sometimes quite neurotic fears expressed, popular feeling towards immigrants and immigration became much warmer; the issue dropped down the list of people’s concerns, even before the plague arrived.

At least during the Cold War countries were concerned about the lives of their citizens. The people pushing climate change are willing to sacrifice a lot of lives to get what they want. A lower population is part of the plan.

That population lowering thing is creepy AF, and it’s not even secret.

Makes the theory of a deliberate leak of Covid somewhat plausible.

Even during the Cold War, we never referred to the Soviet premiers as insane thugs.

The rhetoric is out of control and the it’s removing the brakes on escalation.

A nutty Democrat congressman in New Jersey is even suggesting the U.S. keep poking the Russian Bear by giving the Ukrainians longer range missiles and weapons because Putin hasn’t gone over the edge yet about the shorter range weapons we’ve given. This congressional joker defeated a Republican in 2018 (well to do New Jersey suburban enclaves, not some Union City slum) so we’ll see if he gets re-elected or moved to the trash bin where he belongs.

I saw that yesterday. He was born in Poland.

I hadn’t considered the depths of hatred that the Poles have for both the Russians and the Germans but I think we’re seeing it play out in real time. Z Brzezinski is particularly loathed in the Kremlin for how much he hated Russians and Putin has mentioned his plan for divvying up Russia into smaller states on at least one occasion. Turns out Z’s son Mark is the current US ambassador to Poland.

I am getting kind of worried… I should save more money, though that helps little if the inflation is high and there is nothing to buy

Probably better off with tangible stuff, anyway. Is mom’s lake place a suitable fall back?

    Clean slate.

    New beginning.

We’ll get it right, this time.
