Flying this across country would suck.

Yep. ‘Ol Spud is headed back to Glibs Gulch tomorrow for a couple of weeks. I’m looking forward to it after this summer.

Shall we peruse the shit show that has become our world?

Uh, get woke, go broke?

We live in unserious times.

Unserious.

Die! Die you unholy beast!

“It worked in Vegas.”

BTW, did you know we’re at the beginning of WWIII?

That’s it. I’m going to go hide in Appalachiastan for a couple of weeks and fortify the defenses.

Some 50 years ago I was walking across the El Paso airport when I first heard Mary Travers singing the song. I had just returned from VN and on my way home.

    • Toxteth O'Grady

      Summer camp songbook staple.

  1. Tres Cool

I’m going to bed since some of us work all night.
    Someone alert Rufus.

  2. Ownbestenemy

5 years ago absolutely nothing happened in Vegas.

    • Tundra

      Insane, isn’t it?

I can’t believe more of the victims’ families aren’t raising hell.

      • Ownbestenemy

Even Vegas doesnt care….it’s a commercialized message of Vegas Strong just like Boston was okay with the fuck head teen boy bombers so long as they can profit off it.

      • Chafed

        That’s hard to fathom.

      • Ownbestenemy

Its weird.. We have on the back of our business cards the ‘vegas strong’ message which is just the city skyline, but the advertisement is all ‘remember Oct 1, buy a beer!’ I guess I get it

  3. UnCivilServant

Wait, Facebook has users? I thought it was another botfest.

    • rhywun

The next generation, as Bondy describes it, is now moving over to TikTok

Work sent out an alert yesterday: we are not allowed to install TikTok on company machines and are seriously advised not to install it on personal machines, and they went into some detail about how the CCP mines it for data. I was quite surprised at the candor.

      • rhywun

The company confirmed those features exist in the code, but said TikTok is not using them.

        LOL

      • Plinker762

TikTok isn’t using them, the CCP is.

      • Chafed

Ho-lee shit! I knew it was spyware. I didn’t know it was that bad.

      • Chafed

Sounds like you work for smart people.

      • rhywun

I am generally pleased with them. They seem to buck a lot of the trendy shit other bigcorps are doing (like DEI). I sometimes wonder if it’s because the execs are pretty (((hard-core))).

      • Chafed

That may have something to do with it.

      • Gustave Lytton

I doubt TikTok is the only one.

My company got worried about Google Translate on work product, but then turns around and goes whole hog on Android for mobile solution.

      • Sensei

        Makes surfing Japanese a PITA.

Fortunately my work hasn’t reached that point.

    Uh, get woke, go broke?

A gay rom-com does not necessarily have to be woke. I don’t know the particulars of this one but jeez it’s been done a zillion times before.

Maybe it’s just that it doesn’t appeal to a wide audience.

    • Fourscore

      Maybe it needs more trans-action.

    • Ted S.

Why do you hate gay people?

      • Chafed

        Lol

    • Mojeaux

… the public at large had no interest in seeing …

Here’s the thing: If roughly 10% of the population is actually gay, but Hollyweird (TV, movies) makes it look like it’s a good third to half of the population, it means they’ve swallowed their own calculations and it exposes the bubble they live in, never mind that the industry is disproportionately gay to begin with.

Newsflash: Just because people believe gays should have equal rights under the law doesn’t mean they want to have a front-row seat to their lives.

And also, the article said it had a bunch of advertising, but I’ve never heard of it. Not that I’m important, but I can’t see a movie I haven’t heard of, and I bet I’m not in a small minority.

      • Nephilium

I’ve seen countless ads for it. From the ads I’ve seen it seems to be about a blue collar gay male coming out and dating a culturally gay male. Then they get introduced to each other’s cultures. To me it comes across as a standard outline rom-com, just with two guys.

      • Mojeaux

Maybe I just don’t get out much.

      • Sean

        Like, from the closet?

      • Mojeaux

        Does the pantry count?

      • rhywun

Oh man I wish I had one of those.

My middle room which I guess was intended for a dining room table in addition to being a hallway, is now a kind of pantry after my food supplies spread out to there from the kitchen. They are sitting on a bunch of plastic moving bins that I haven’t emptied in ten years.

      • Mojeaux

When I get it straightened out again (thanks to Hurricane XY), I’ll post pantry pr0n.

      • rhywun

I’ve seen many ads for it. You must not be watching the gay rom-com friendly channels. πŸ€ͺ

I suppose if it becomes a “box-office disaster” it will be because they misjudged the wider public’s interest in it, which will of course be turned into a political football yay.

      • Sensei

If it’s supposed to be crossover why have explicit sex? I’d watch a gay romcom if the focus is on the comedy.

I’m assuming gay guys don’t mind straight romantic comedy, but really aren’t going to be interested if it has lots of graphic hetro sex either.

      • Ted S.

Look at all the great screwball and rom-coms from Hollywood’s Golden Age that don’t rely on graphic sex.

      • rhywun

        why have explicit sex

Yeah, I didn’t know about that. It’s certainly not hinted at in the commercials.

      • hayeksplosives

I was glad in the 90s that the fad of slipping a sex scene into every R rated movie (action movie, drama, mystery) had more-or-less subsided.

80s directors of R rated movies seemed to think throwing in a sex scene was necessary, regardless of whether or not it furthered the plot. It got annoying, like flinging a random saxophone solo into a rock song that had not included any sax up until that bridge l.

Now that society is accepting of gay relationships, similarly uncreative directors think they have to show deep throat gay kisses and sex scenes, rather than just present the gay couple as a couple and move along.

I don’t want to see ANY depictions of sex or heavy wet kisses. Just tell the damn story or advertise the damned product.

      • Ownbestenemy

That is us! Fade away at kisses or whatever. People aren’t dumb they can figure out someone got the bone come the morning scene

      • Nephilium

The more entertaining is when the movie throws in the topless scene just to get the R rating over a PG-13.

      • Ownbestenemy

People wouldn’t understand that visually. I need to see tongue in throat

    • Q Continuum

Maybe the movie just sucks (not a metaphor).

      • Chafed

Could be. My question is did they write a rom com with gay characters or a gay rom com. If it was the latter, then I’m guessing they put The Message before plot and character development.

  5. Nephilium

It’s Saturday, and I have survived a local brewery’s one year anniversary (I got a free pint glass). So I’ll open up the Zoom/Happy Hour/Timeshare pitch at 20:00 Eastern.

I just got back from Denali State Park. Grouse cleaned and in the freezer, guns cleaned and put away, Animal cleaned and ready to engage in witty repartee with Glibs.

This is gonna sound weird but I almost think they killed themselves.

I used the command to throttle people who did nothing but whine about politics, and the entire page just got silent. There’s nothing there.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

There was a plugin years ago that did the same thing. After tuning the filters, I had ~10 posts per day in my feed. I peaced out shortly after realizing how little signal was embedded in the noise.

      • trshmnstr the terrible

Likewise, I just unmuted a bunch of people on LinkedIn as I continue my job search… What a cesspool of woke virtue signaling and bullshit slinging! I’d delete my account if it weren’t basically mandatory for career networking.

      • Gustave Lytton

I’m sorry. My circle is more conservative and it’s still full of non-work unprofessional posts except it’s flag waving crap.

      • rhywun

Yeah, I wound up there a couple times after I was last hired. It is a different kind of person than me who seems to enjoy posting there. All platitudes and yeah, woke shit.

  10. DEG

The teenager “died from an act of self-harm while suffering depression”, he said, but added it would not be “safe” to conclude it was suicide.

WTF? Sounds like suicide to me.

Today the view looks much different. Meta has lost about two-thirds of its value since peaking in September 2021. The stock is trading at its lowest since January 2019 and is about to close out its third straight quarter of double-digit percentage losses. Only four stocks in the S&P 500 are having a worse year.

When they bought the former Sun Microsystem’s Menlo Park campus… I figured this would happen.

I’m not a big John Denver fan… but I like that song.

  11. Tundra

    Hiya, Spud!

Enjoy your trip back East. Thoughts and prayers for the liver.

That’s quite a collection of lynx. It appears that we are approaching peak retard.

And thanks for the song. I have no idea why, but John Denver is one of my favorites and that song always kicks my ass.

    What’s shakin’ tonight, peeps?

    • Ownbestenemy

People watching at the local pub.

      • Ownbestenemy

And peak retard can never be reached

      • Tundra

        Probably.

People watching at the pub sounds good. We got a nice hike in before the storms came through.

Another of my favorite JD songs.

I’ll turn in my punk card.

      • Ownbestenemy

Uh why turn in punk card? Punk is a lifestyle and way of though, not adherence to a certain music style.

      • Ownbestenemy

Beer and phone posting don’t mix. Though=life

      • DEG

I was at Ye Olde Local Brewpub earlier tonight for some drinks and dinner. I left when I did because I am supposed to get a document done for work for Monday. I haven’t opened my work laptop yet. In fact, I had another beer. I might have one more.

      • Ownbestenemy

The world moved on with the notion that one more beer was warranted

      • DEG

I’ve had more than one more.

    • rhywun

John Denver is a guilty pleasure.

My 10th grade math teacher was in love with him and not shy about telling us.

      • Tundra
      • MikeS

I don’t like much John Denver, but I really like this one.

      • rhywun

        Yeah, that’s probably my favorite.

      • Chafed

I don’t understand using John Denver and pleasure in the same sentence.

      • Chafed

        Those lyrics are still awful.

      • MikeS

These kids actually do a pretty damn good job, too.

      • Chafed

They are doing their best with the original material but it can’t be saved. I suppose Rush is to you as John Denver is to me.

      • MikeS

If you like 1.5 Rush songs, than yes.

      • UnCivilServant

I do not understand you people who actually know the names of songs and bands.

  12. hayeksplosives

My kitty eunuch has recovered wonderfully from his surgery and doesn’t understand why he has to remain confined to the guest room (doctor’s orders).

I find it interesting that the painkillers they gave us to administer for the next 3 days is Gabapentin. That’s an anti seizure drug in humans. But in cats it’s used for pain, anxiety, and also epilepsy (didn’t know cats had that, though I know it’s not rare in dogs).

I might let the little guy out of the room early instead of waiting a whole week.

    • rhywun

A week?! OMG let the poor guy out early.

      • hayeksplosives

I let him out for half an hour to play around the house. I had visited him earlier for cuddle time.

But now that older cat is inside, I’m keeping the little dude in the guest room so that they don’t play too rough.

I’ll probably let him roam the house freely by Monday. His appetite is fine, his litter box habits are fine. I don’t predict any issues at all.

      • rhywun

        πŸ‘

      • MikeS

I forgot about the other cat. Yeah, segregation for awhile it probably a good idea.

    • MikeS

doesn’t understand why he has to remain confined to the guest room (doctor’s orders).

That makes two of us. When we got our female fixed, we just kept her in the house for two days (she and her brothers are shop cats) and the vet thought that was a prefect wonderful plan.

  13. Gustave Lytton

Came back from the grocery tonight. Got burger patties at the counter and asked the guy three times to shrink wrap them on a tray. Idiot comes back with the tray wrapped in butcher paper. And then I noticed it’s 85%. πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ wtf is wrong with people?

    • slumbrew

Did you want more or less fat?

      • Sean

        More!

I’d be cool with 80%, but didn’t want to assume.

      There was a Vegas shooting?

      • Nephilium

It got NOFX kicked off their own tour because Fat Mike made an “offensive” joke.

    Behold! The First shall cometh!

    • MikeS

      I’m sorry, what? I wasn’t paying attention.

    • Chafed

      Well, sure. Anyone can masturbate.

  16. Gustave Lytton

Who the hell thought things need periodic LED flashes? Every new smoke detector has them. Worst is when it’s mounted on the ceiling over the bed in a hotel room.

The new voltage detector has it too. Genius to flash the same light that indicates voltage. πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

    • Lackadaisical

Yup. The hotel ones are evil. Like it isn’t hard enough to sleep somewhere novel without periodically flashing a light into your face. All hotels should come required with electrical tape to cover that up.

      • Lackadaisical

Also, no way it isn’t on the books somewhere that it’s required.

  17. slumbrew

Watching #1 Georgia losing to unranked Missouri.

This will be an insane upset if Missouri can pull this off – they were getting 32 points.

    • Chafed

How much do you have riding on it?

      • slumbrew

Nothing, I just like a huge upset.

Of course, I jinxed them. Georgia with possession, up by 3 with under 2 to play.

      • Chafed

So MO will still cover the spread.

At 54 (“feels like 51”) degrees, it’s a wee bit chilly for me to be comfortable sitting outside, so I’m stuck indoors, at least for the time being. However, I did hobble my way through the grocery last night, so I now have a “homemade” chai latte (equal parts mix and milk,) a yummy croissant, and choral music on the streaming satellite radio, so it’s all good! πŸ˜‹β˜•πŸ₯πŸŽΆπŸ“»πŸŽ§

    • Toxteth O'Grady

      Cozy. But back to hobbling?

      • Gender Traitor

Eh, it’s been on and off for the last week. I consider yesterday an accomplishment because I helped TT trim our tallest shrubbery. (He climbed and trimmed, I held the ladder as needed and raked up the trimmage to go into the big rolling trash can.) Had a bit of a rest after, before grocerizing, but that was probably a bit much for one day. TT and I competed for who got to use the shopping cart as a “walker.”
