I’m going to assume crossover conversation from the day’s events will occur—immediately.  I am hereby declaring amnesty on all off topic links.

That said…

State-owned gas company buys off the state’s regulators??? Only in Mexico…

Looks like rain.

In other oil-related news, Brandon cozies up with a dictator.

In more oil-related news, the local warlord did the locals a small favor.

If El Presidente Dudebro keeps saying the quiet part out loud, he’s going to be the next Bolsonaro.

Here’s a good tune.  Remember:  An “I voted” sticker is an open admission of aggression, therefore punching those people is not an NAP violation…though it’s probably illegal.*

*A word from the Glibertarians.com legal department:  Punching voters is indeed battery and this is not an endorsement.

Holy shit, I just spent $250 on groceries. Good thing I was sexually molested at Camp Lejuene.

“Good thing I was sexually molested at Camp Lejuene.”

I don’t know how to break this to you…

It’s not an excuse to punch people with “I Voted” stickers?

    • UnCivilServant

I just spent $25, mostly on canned goods.

      I couldn’t find an 8oz can of tuna, or even a 6oz, it’s all 5oz cans now 🙁

      • Count Potato

They still make 8 oz. cans, in addition to the 5 oz.

      • UnCivilServant

        I found 12oz, but no 8oz

      • Count Potato

Huh, I don’t think I’ve ever seen 12 oz. Never looked either.

Is there a roadmap for successfully removing taxing power from a school district?

The one I have the misfortune to live in wants $1k from me for no services rendered.

    • Count Potato

That’s it? Around here half the property tax goes to schools. So you either have a fantastic mil rate or live in a tool shed.

      • UnCivilServant

Well, that $1k is half a year’s worth. And my tax valuation is only $40k. My total property taxes end up $3k/yr (2/3 of that is for the damn schools)

Yes, my house is only 1000-1300 sqft, with a lot of the same size.

      • kinnath

We have $3.5K property taxes on $300K assessed value.

      • UnCivilServant

You also live in a better state.

      • kinnath

There is plenty of room here.

      • Spudalicious

        $5600 on $1.2m assessment.

      • Spudalicious

And the state just sent me a $600 tax rebate because we are currently flush.

      • UnCivilServant

Which state? In New York there’s an old vote buying scheme that gives a tax rebate on primary residences. It used to be on your annual tax filings, but they figured it’d have more impact if they mailed out checks instead.

      • Spudalicious

Idaho. Don’t get me started on my NY property taxes.

      • UnCivilServant

$1.2M on an assessed value of $5,600?

      • Spudalicious

Over 3% of assessed value, because the university doesn’t pay property taxes.

      • Not Adahn

$6k on $350k. Amd yes, it is a modest 3br.

      • prolefeed

$16K on our residence, $6 on a rental.

That was a big hit all at once.

      • prolefeed

        $6K on the rental.

      • Swiss Servator

        $10250 on a $329k house.

        @#$% Illinois.

      • Count Potato

        Damn.

      • juris imprudent

That’s actually worse than PA. Not by much, but still, worse. Thank god I’m not taxed on the supposed market value.

      • kinnath

Much of property taxes go to schools.

In addition, there are income tax surcharges based on school district.

So, taxed twice for schools. Both my kids are in their 40s. Three of my four grandkids are out of school. It’s good to know that I am paying to have stranger’s kids brainwashed by the woke mob.

    • Ted S.

They’re protecting you by imprisoning the kids and keeping them off the street.

      • Certified Public Asshat

Or if you want to be kind, babysitting.

    • Rat on a train

The state and county collect for them here. You do get to vote for school board and the school board gets to vote against you.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

Our local school district is asking for more money on the ballot again. It’s a perennial thing now. They got a ton more money a couple of years ago and promptly built a bunch of athletic facilities at the local high school. Their mailers this year complained about the poor conditions of the classrooms at the high school. Maybe you need to get your priorities straight before you get more money.

      • UnCivilServant

This is why I want them to have to fire the entire administration whenever they have ‘maintenance issues’ on any building. They’ve clearly failed at their jobs.

      • juris imprudent

We have declining enrollments, so of course they want to build new (smaller) schools. We’re right at the point of paying off the bonds from the last round of construction.

    • Lord Humungus

EF and I pay over $5k a year in property taxes.

This is considered outrageous here in the greater Grand Rapids area. But hey – look at that school! And, with the higher than average house prices + taxes, keeps out the middle class on down.

Plus they plow the sidewalks in the winter, pick up the trash from the top of the driveway, and take away your leaves. /what a deal 🙂

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

$5K? You’re getting ripped off. I’m up to over $11K here.

  3. SDF-7

State-owned gas company buys off the state’s regulators??? Only in Mexico…

Actually, I forgot who’s day it was and was assuming California… PG&E is very, very cozy with the regulators after all.

    • juris imprudent

Yeah, but SoCal Gas is incrementally being put out of business.

  4. Shpip

But before that can happen, the U.S. wants the Maduro regime to return to stalled negotiations in Mexico with Venezuela’s political opposition. Its leaders are demanding democratic reforms that would open the door to free and fair Venezuelan presidential elections in 2024.

I’d be happy with free and fair elections in the US in 2024.

Huh. November in Alaska. Who‘d have thunk.

      • Rat on a train

Yeah. You’ve had your month each of spring, summer and fall.

      • Animal

Well, we do have four seasons here. June, July, August and winter.

Honestly, though, winters here are long and cold but so, so beautiful. The snow stays this beautiful pristine white until it melts in spring. Where it drifts up the light shining through it comes through blue, the snow is so clean. It’s like the land pulls a white blanket over itself and sleeps until spring.

        Also: No tourists!

      • UnCivilServant

I should show up at Animal’s place with a camera and talk out of synch with my movements like I’ve been badly overdubbed.

The only way this makes sense to me at this point is that this is more NIMBY environmentalism. He seems to have no problem buying oil from other countries with bad environmental and even worse human rights records.

    • Spudalicious

We actually need Venezuelan crude. It’s nasty, heavy stuff and we’re about the only country that can refine it. But that also means diesel.

    • Drake

Because they are losing Saudi Arabia in a big way – see my link below.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

It ain’t just oil. We buy all kinds of stuff from China.

      • The Other Kevin

True, but I think that’s mostly because outsourcing to China is really cheap. I can’t imagine they’ll get a better deal on oil than drilling it here.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

One reason China is cheap is that they don’t have the various labor and environmental regulations we have. We’re basically exporting our smog.

  9. Drake

“Emily Ratajkowski revealed she actively tries to ‘balance’ out her truck-obsessed son Sylvester’s toy collection by purchasing him playthings specifically targeted at girls.

During Tuesday’s episode of her High Low podcast, the 31-year-old supermodel told her guest, Julia Fox, that her tot ‘literally gets so excited’ by ‘things with wheels.’

‘But is this just what he likes naturally?’ she wondered, before saying it makes her ‘so sad’ to think about her little boy being pressured to ‘toughen up’ as he gets older.

The author went on to say: ‘I’m like, are those the little ways you can start making sure the conditioning doesn’t happen? And spending a lot of time around women?’

Meanwhile Fox, who shares a one-year-old son, named Valentino, with ex-husband Peter Artemiev, also raved that her baby ‘loves trucks’ and ‘freaks out’ over them.

But to keep things ‘balanced’ out, the former muse of Kanye West says she bought a pink truck and a ‘little stroller with a doll in it.'”

  18. Tundra

Just got back from voting. They had touchscreen or paper. The wait was a lot less for the paper (which goes into a bag, not a machine), so I have no idea what the fortification in CO is gonna be. In Minne, you filled in the oval and ran it into the machine. Not perfect, but seems better than touchscreens or “trust us” bags.

    This is retarded.

    • kinnath

In Iowa, we handed over out Driver’s Licenses to a nice lady that verified we were registered to vote in the jurisdiction. Then, the kind lady printed out a receipt that we had to sign to attest that we had not voted anywhere else. Then we got our ballots. Fill in the ovals, and then scan them in to the system.

Totally racist. I did not see a person of color anywhere in the vicinity of the polling place.

      • KK the Porcine Pearl-Eater

The nice lady at the table at my polling place knew two of my dad’s neighbors from the same street (the street only has, like, 6 houses on it). The guy next to her was the principal of a high school in Burlington, VT in the 80’s (I was wearing my UVM sweatpants. Because I’m put-together & fashionable)

      • Raven Nation

Didn’t need an ID to vote. I’d forgotten about it and went for a walk which took me near the polling station. There was no wait and no ID requirement so I voted.

Of course, I did vote Yes on a state amendment to require a photo ID to vote in the future.

What?!! Of course I have no shame – I hang out here don’t I?

    • R.J.

The touchscreens were gone this time. I presented my id, a lady printed a ballot, and I sat down and hand-filled in a bunch of squares completely. Then another dude supervised as I scanned it in a machine.

    • The Other Kevin

Our system has changed a little but I like it. You show your ID and verify your address, then sign on a touch screen. They then print a piece of paper with a bar code, and two people initial it. You put that into the voting machine, use a touch screen to vote, then at the end it prints your choices in barcodes on the ballot. That gets put into a locked box where it’s scanned, and it verifies it read your ballot.

      • Lackadaisical

That seems overly complicated. At least it has a paper trail.

      • The Other Kevin

It’s really not. You get to use a touch screen which eliminates entry errors, and you have a paper trail. You can look at the paper ballot to make sure it’s right. I liked it. Where I live, some things on the ballot depended on your address, so they couldn’t just give everyone the same ballot.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

I haven’t voted yet, but last time around we had a similar system. Voted on touch screen, which printed a QR code and listed in plain text your vote so it’s human readable.

It seemed overly complicated to me, but it theoretically should reduce the risk of running out of ballots and of having a lot of blank ballots floating around at the end of the day. And I like that there’s a paper trail. However, I wonder what would happen if something started going haywire with one of the machines. There ain’t no way the volunteers would be able to fix it, and there still would need to be a bunch of provisional ballots on hand for such a case.

      • rhywun

blank ballots floating around at the end of the day

Huh, I never thought of that. Ours are pre-printed. I imagine some observer is watching them destroy them at the end of the day… right??

      • Tundra

        Well, that’s true.

It’s my first time voting here, so I have no idea, but it just strikes me that the simple ballot scanners worked fine for a long time.

The only reason to complicate it is to cheat.

      • rhywun

The fix is in, as they say.

I wonder why voting the way it was done for two hundred plus years suddenly became “difficult”.

      • B.P.

  19. KK the Porcine Pearl-Eater

What I learned from voting today: I never have to vote in this district again unless it’s somethin important like a Constitutional amendment. Most of the races, including the Congressional race, were unopposed. The only LP on the ballot was for governor.

One party rule sucks no matter who’s doing it.

    • R.J.

Very true. Balance of power is always better.

    • Tundra

      100 percent.

There was an initiative to lower income tax, so of course I wanted to vote for that!

    • rhywun

At least every position that matters here had opposing candidates. It’s quite rare to see it otherwise. Sometimes we even get three, or we used to before as someone pointed out earlier the state made it more difficult for third parties to get on the ballot.

  20. KK the Porcine Pearl-Eater

This is where I live (and it’s awesome): young kid (30 years old) next door neighbor with the hair metal hair and handlebar moustache gets home from his pest control job every day and drives foam golf balls from his site into the field behind us while wearing wife beaters, jeans, and cowboy boots.

There are some nasty proposals going on here in Michigan – and I have no idea how they are polling.

    • Lord Humungus

and the Detroit Cheat Machine(tm) will be sure to pass whatever state wide race they want so yeah I’m already disaffected.

    • Allen

I’m on the opposite side of the state from you, (north of Detroit), and voting in my district was busy today.

You’re not kidding. The worst proposals I can remember during my time here. I think all are expected to pass but I have my fingers crossed that they don’t.

      • anti pro state

I’m in your neck of the woods, at least the same corner of the state. Yeah, what the hell was with the proposals this year? They all seemed to have poison-pill clauses to make you regret your vote either for or against. I kept seeing all the local yard signs of “Vote no… too confusing, too extreme.” I went NO for all three, plus downvoted the millages. That third one was a doozy: “We pinky swear to do the elections on the up-and-up if you promise never to look behind the curtain.”

      • Allen

I was thinking the same thing. With proposals 1 and 2, I felt like they were designed to be obnoxious.

Proposal 1: Term limit changes, and also require annual financial disclosures from candidates.
Proposal 2: A grab bag of election things that were mostly neutral, plus allowing both ballot drop boxes and private donations to fund elections.
Proposal 3: Vaguely written, I do think it’s a bit unclear what it protects. Would minor gender transitions be included?

We only had 2 millages here, one for school millage, and another to fund public transit (specifically buses), that I have no faith is being done appropriately.

No to all for me. We didn’t have a millage for elections in my district.

    • rhywun

The nasty proposals here are the main reason I went in and voted against them.

      • Swiss Servator

The horrifying existential threat of gridlock

Twitter’s new CEO, Elon Musk, is calling for voters to cast their ballots for Republicans for Congress. It’s not exactly a surprise, given his expressions of support for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and a QAnon-affiliated House Republican this year. But his poor reasoning for why he was endorsing the GOP is yet another example of the flimsiness of his depressingly influential political arguments.

“To independent-minded voters: Shared power curbs the worst excesses of both parties, therefore I recommend voting for a Republican Congress, given that the Presidency is Democratic,” Musk tweeted on Monday. Musk even pinned the tweet to the top of his user profile, suggesting he felt it was a particularly important message for his 100 million-plus followers.

    ——-

On the surface, Musk’s thinking is understandable. But the logic is filled with holes, and it’s particularly weak reasoning at this particular historical moment. The pursuit of balance in government without regard for what the parties actually stand for and how the government is actually functioning is not a commitment to moderation. It is deeply irresponsible.

First, a split federal government in America today isn’t a balanced one, but a dysfunctional one. Polarization and the abuse of the filibuster have slowed the pace and scope of legislative accomplishment in the U.S. government for decades. Voting for a split government isn’t curbing the excess of the party in power; it ensures that it will no longer be able to get anything done. In an era when Republicans value demonstrating party purity to the base above almost all else, it’s safe to assume they will block almost any legislation from the White House and Democrats. They will hold the country hostage over the debt ceiling. And they will exploit control of committees to hold bad faith hearings — including possible impeachment efforts —in an attempt to taint Democrats’ reputation ahead of the 2024 elections.

More broadly, Musk is ignoring the fundamental asymmetry between the parties on existentially significant issues. He has devoted a great deal of his entrepreneurial energy to building climate-friendly cars and thinking about how to deal with global warming. Why would he favor the climate-denying Republicans, who have objected to electric vehicle spending and proudly thwart any attempt to avert ecological catastrophe?

What bizarre logic could there be in not wanting Biden and friends to destroy the economy? Next thing you know, Musk will say something like, “Poor people can’t afford my cars.”

Well, it could be one of those old misdirections. That is, they hope everyone who reads that will assume pro-choice people are voting in droves. But, there are a lot of ballot measures out there that pro-life folks could think are important.

Of course, there is also the possibility that Musk simply wants to advocate for Republicans while maintaining a veneer of nonpartisanship. In recent months he has demonstrated over and over again that he has drifted to the right, in part because he now thinks the Democrats are “the party of division and hate.” Musk has an interest in masking his motives, as he knows that his new status as the CEO of Twitter means his political statements are more closely scrutinized and will affect his customer base and advertising revenue.

But however sincere Musk’s claimed reasoning is, what we can say is that he has indulged in reckless “bothsidesing” under the banner of centrist sagacity. None of this bodes well for his already-rocky tenure as chief of one of the world’s most influential digital public squares.

Those who do not agree with the great progressive consensus are doomed to eternal fire and damnation.

    I’m in a mood.

    • Fatty Bolger

      Voted against retaining any judge.

I seriously considered it, but that was a lot of bubbles to fill out, and it wouldn’t matter, anyway.

      • rhywun

I just left the judge sheet blank. Didn’t notice if any of them were marked incumbents.

      • robc

I do that unless I recognize a judge’s name. If I recognize the name, then clearly they need to be voted against.

    • Raven Nation

Same for me on the judges*; someone here once suggested that. I voted Libertarian where there were candidates; two Republicans (one House of Reps; one state attorney). Skipped all the one-candidate races and the local stuff I don’t understand (community college at large). Voted against minimum wage increase and for voter ID. Skipped everything else. Had actually planned to not vote but, well, see above.

I do acknowledge Fatty’s wisdom on that.

    • Nephilium

Not a single Libertarian on the ballot here in my area of Ohio. Voted against two levies, a bond measure, both DeWines (fuck political legacies), then went straight R. I feel like I need a shower.

      • R.J.

Me too. I made a vodka martini for later.

Ohio and Florida both had their big election embarrassments and cleaned up their election processes. Probably not a coincidence that both states are going deeper red.

I thought Arizona was going to fix itself, then realized that the Secretary of State is the Dem Governor candidate – and she didn’t recuse herself from election oversight. Going to have to pass a law to stop that from ever happening again.

    This is a new low.

Instead of tabulating their ballot directly, voters are being told to put their ballot into a box under the tabulator so that their ballot may be tabulated at a later time downtown.

Holy crap – Is there a chain-off-custody set up for the box of random uncounted ballots? Will there be observers there when these boxes are eventually counted?

  28. Rebel Scum

I always refuse the “I voted” sticker because I do not feel the need/desire to virtue signal about a useless process.

      I’m sure it’s Trump’s fault.

I was thinking about this, casually, while drinking, the other day. Remember how the hard-core Trump-backers always argued he was playing 4-dimensional chess and was about to win the pot? Well, now my prog friends seem to think he played four-dimensional chess and secretly created all these problems that poor ol’ Joe has to deal with. One of my friends blamed Trump for the Ukraine war. I pointed out that Putin was aggressive under Obama & Biden and kept his head down while Trump was in power (maybe just correlation). How then, I asked, was he responsible for Ukraine? He laid the groundwork, she said. How, I persisted. Secret deals. Uh-huh.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

  31. The Late P Brooks

    According to my model…

The impacts of climate change threaten “the things Americans value most,” according to the latest version of the federal interagency National Climate Assessment (NCA).

The latest NCA, the first since 2018, warns that “more intense extreme events and long-term climate changes make it harder to maintain safe homes and healthy families, reliable public services, a sustainable economy, thriving ecosystems, and strong communities.”

The report adds that many of those extreme impacts are already reality and poised to worsen in parts of the country. For example, parts of the country have seen intensified rainfall and flooding in regions like the Northeast and the Midwest, according to the NCA. These phenomena have consequences beyond immediate damages, the report notes — they can also result in runoff that damages crops and water supplies.

For example, between 1981 and 2016, excess precipitation cost the U.S. about as much in maize crop yields as extreme drought would have.

    ——-

The impact of climate change also exacerbates, and will exacerbate, existing social inequalities. Historical discrimination patterns mean minority neighborhoods are more likely to be in low-lying, flood-prone areas and those vulnerable to industrial pollution. They also have fewer trees and more pavement, creating so-called heat islands that make them more susceptible to extreme heat — in some cases, up to 12.6 degrees Fahrenheit than richer, whiter neighborhoods during heatwaves.

    Garbage in, garbage out.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

Until recently there has never been above average nor below average rainfall. It was always just right.

    • B.P.

“The impacts of climate change threaten “the things Americans value most,” ”

Abortion? I’ve been told by reliable sources it’s abortion.

      • R.J.

Abortion until the age of 18. Years.

“I brought you into this world, and I can take you out!”

  32. Not Adahn

    Voted. Some observations:

    1. I thought that minor parties had been taken off the ballot by new access requirements. This is not the case (though there was no LP line).
    2. Two of the minor parties (Conservative and Working People’s) amost perfectly matched the R and D candidates, respectively. Except…
2a. The judge candidates were all the same for R, D and WP. Only the C party had different judges. When the Rs and Ds agree on a candidate they must be evil. Even though “conservative” makes me cringe, I voted for their judges.
    3. There were two other minor parties, each with only one candidate: The LaRouche and some platitude containing “Public Safety” in it. The latter’s candidate was the asshole from the charity shoot. He was also endorsed by the WPs.

I voted against the 2.4 gigabuck bond for environmental activities.

I met Hershel Walker at a meeting of current and future leader in 1990. He was sharp and engaging then, talked mostly about isometric exercises. Gave a much better speech than Michael Jordan or Susan Butcher, but not as good as Reagan’s.

    • creech

Concussions have caught up to him?

    • rhywun

Two of the minor parties (Conservative and Working People’s) amost perfectly matched the R and D candidates, respectively.

That is almost always the case in NY. Those function as extra buckets for the big two parties.

My judges were all D, R, and C. Another reason to skip them entirely.

Forgot about the LaRouche candidate. She said some interesting things but IIRC they’re some sort of cult so I stayed away.

There was no Working Families anywhere on my ballot this year.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

Who said he drank seltzer? The cans were full.

    • R.J.

How did we get to two cans? I only saw one.

Rand is ahead 355-176. I am guessing a small percent of the vote in, but that seems about right for the ratio.

      • robc

Ky polls close at 6, so Eastern half of state is starting to report.

      • robc

Andy Barr is ahead 298-128 in Lexington area House race, so that actually is a poor sign for Rand to be underperforming Barr. Then again, I know nothing about the guy running against Barr.

      • robc

3644-1115 now. And I am done with that until we have real numbers.

Well, it’s a little tough to admit for the obvious reason, but I just voted for Herschel Junior Walker for Senate.

    • robc

I am glad I don’t live in GA, for that reason alone.

I won’t vote for a dwag. There was the LP guy on the ballot, couldn’t throw him a bone?

Especially not one from the Jan Kemp era.

      • Pine_Tree

Well we’re a mixed marriage – Mrs. Tree is one of them, too, so I’ve already swallowed a bigger pill.

So, in for a penny, in for a pound. Decided I’d rather use my alleged vote just to run Herschel’s number up just to add irritation to the donks.

  36. robc

Its hilarious how the hill folk of eastern KY can get their votes counted faster than in the cities. I don’t know where central processing is, but the drive between Pikeville and London isn’t short. But a compact city district can get the votes tabulated?

    • robc

2:14 between Pikeville and London according to google maps.

  37. The Bearded Hobbit

We had five Libertarians on the ballot and I voted for four of them. Had to vote for the R guy for gov and a protest to b*tch who shut down the state during the panicdemic.
