        Umm, well, um, it’s complicated.

      • Jarflax

And there is the root of the problem. Changing things requires political skills. Political skills, like any skills, are developed by using them. Career politicians are always going to be better at politics than any reformer, from either side. You can have all the grassroots support there is, and have logic and decency entirely on your side, but implementing changes to destroy the establishment within the system the establishment has built to protect itself, is a pipedream.

“RFMA would repeal the Clinton-era Defense of Marriage Act and would require the federal government to recognize any marriage that was “valid in the place where entered into.” The bill would also require every state to recognize every same-sex marriage that “is valid in the State where the marriage was entered into.”

As a report from Slate noted, the bill “does not go as far as Obergefell. In that decision, the Supreme Court directed every state to license same-sex marriages—that is, to issue a marriage certificate to same-sex couples. The RFMA does not codify this component of Obergefell.””

No idea how that is “far-left”.

recognize any marriage that was “valid in the place where entered into
Does that only apply to states or does it require recognizing foreign marriages where polygamy or child marriage is legal?

      • Tonio

From the article it would seem so, but I want to read the actual text of the bill in case the article misquoted the bill, ie used “place” instead of “state.”

It will be fun to watch feminists quietly seethe about that but not say anything for fear of being labelled islamophobic.

      • Trigger Hippie

I’m not seeing how “states have to recognize marriages that were deemed valid in the state that they were issued” is far left, any more than “states can’t arrest or prosecute people for owning and bearing arms or ammo in a manner that is legal in the state where the gun or ammo was purchased” would be far right.

Unless strict adherence to the Constitution is somehow far left or far right.

    • DrOtto

Why can’t the answer ever be to get gov’t out of the marriage business entirely? Something, something church and state?

      • Michael Malaise

Didn’t Alabama try that (obviously for different reasons than we would want to)?

      • l0b0t

I recall reading a book about the history of marriage in the US. According to the author, the state was uninvolved in marriages until an infectious disease outbreak (syphilis?) in the early 20th Century brought out the Progressive public health types to mandate blood tests for prospective partners. The fee that might be charged for licensing the union was a little lagniappe for local pols.

We are being conditioned to accept an even more broken election system that allows the powers that be to completely override the actual will of the people as it would be expressed at the ballot box.

      • rhywun

I’m seeing a consensus form around the idea that the GOP needs to adapt to the broken system the Dems gave us. Vote early, pump in what the Dems will call “dark money” because it’s not aiding them, harvest ballots, and so forth.

Seems like giving up to me but what do I know.

      • Plisade

In states controlled by team red, the push should be to legislate the Florida model of elections.

In states where that’s not possible, we should play by team blue’s rules. But I don’t really expect repubs to have the guts to fight dirty.

      • prolefeed

        What Plisade said.

You don’t abide by Marquis of Queensbury rules when someone else is shooting and shanking you. You escalate their tactics so hard that they have to make said tactics illegal for their self defense.

      • juris imprudent

OK, so if we really accept the idea of the uni-party, why be upset with election results? Isn’t it all as pointless as being a sports fan?

If we really think elections are going to make a difference, any differences must come from factions that aren’t part of the uni-party. In which case we aren’t upset about the balance between D and R, we’re upset that no other faction can get any traction. The whole problem is then getting on the ballot far more than the counting of them after they are cast.

      • AlexinCT

OK, so if we really accept the idea of the uni-party, why be upset with election results? Isn’t it all as pointless as being a sports fan?

One of the uniparty teams is driving the old beat up station wagon at the speed limit and slowly taking us over the cliff. The other has strapped a Saturn V rocket to the roof of their station wagon, and is trying to fly us off the cliff at record speed.

      • juris imprudent

So we’re going over the cliff, either way. If it’s going to crash and burn – let’s get it done. Start over, because this shit isn’t doing anything useful.

      • AlexinCT

Yeah, there is where you lose me. There will be no “Starting over”. What do you think that global reset is about, huh?

      • juris imprudent

How many divisions does Klaus the fat dumbass actually command?

      • EvilSheldon

That crash is going to kill a lot of people, and plunge most of the survivors into generational poverty. Our ability to build functional support systems after the collapse will be severely compromised.

The crash is probably inevitable, but we still need the time to prepare.

      • prolefeed

I don’t think the crash is at all inevitable. People will push back and force changes. And if a crash is inevitable, collaborating with those who hate you and want you dead seems like a terrible idea.

      • EvilSheldon

I’m going to assume it’s inevitable. If I’m wrong, fuck it, party at Sheldon’s place!

I’m not sure where you’re getting the ‘collaborating’ part, but I’m reasonably sure I’m not doing it. I promise.

      • B.P.

Hey now… I’m trying to run out the clock over here!

      • R C Dean

I think part of the aggravation is that one wing of the uniparty shows signs of becoming an actual competitive party, and our broken electoral system is being used to prevent that.

      • juris imprudent

Well the Democrats certainly care about winning.

      • AlexinCT

They are about power. At any costs. So they understand they need to win to keep and grow that.

      • R C Dean

The Dems like winning, but they like exercising power more. The current arrangement with the GOP allows them to exercise power quite satisfactorily, and most especially allows them to raise lots and lots of money, which is not really possible without an opposition to motivate donations. The Dems were happy to push through ObamaCare, even though they knew it would cost them an election cycle. Power trumps winning elections, which are increasingly marginal to the exercise of power.

The push for a one-party state is pretty recent, and really dates back to January 6, 2021. Without a real outsider challenge to the uniparty arrangement, it would never have gotten traction, but some (many?) see it as necessary to put down the outsider challenge. That’s what its really about, and the GOP leadership is eager to play along in the hopes that it will preserve the uniparty arrangement,

      • Grummun

This. The only hope for improving our situation requires honest elections. I personally do not look forward to living through the collapse of American civilization, so I find “who cares it’s all going to crash anyway” pretty fucking annoying.

This is where the real black pill comes from. Its not the machinations of a cabal, its the fact that for three generations Americans have relentlessly voted for an ominipotent federal government. You can get rid of the current cabal, but you will be left with the society that created and tolerated the cabal. And you can be sure another will fill the void.

      • AlexinCT

I think this is a chicken or the egg scenario…

The cabal took control of culture and education to brainwash idiots into thinking a big and intrusive government is the answer to all problems. These people see more and more failures and problems from big intrusive government doing it’s thing, and then conclude the answer is even more intrusive and bigger government, because….

There is no fixing he majority of these people…

The announcement of the indictment just a week after the gubernatorial election could raise questions for Shapiro, who was a strident critic of Republicans who cast doubt on the results of the 2020 election in Pennsylvania. According to an arrest affidavit, Shapiro’s office opened an investigation into Crews in September 2019. It is unclear why it took three years to bring charges against him.

    A real mystery, that.

Right? That’s the word on the streets. I could be wrong, but that’s what I have heard from my federal prosecutor friends. Alyssa and I actually agree. She’s heard the same thing. So he’s trying to grift. His legal bills – they’re very expensive because he’s done a lot of things. So I think that what we shouldn’t do is what we did the last time. The media made him more and more and more and more famous. I think we can make this twice impeached, disgraced, almost indicted former president, perhaps a criminal. We can pay attention to the criminal if he’s indicted, but let’s not pay so much attention to this guy trying to grift and make money off the presidency.”

From the Department of Hate Everyone: Two local health care giants are talking about a merger and the nurses union has weighed in.

MNA Nurses strongly oppose these proposed corporate mergers by our hospital CEOs at the same time as they continue to close hospitals, pay millions to themselves and other top executives, and deny nurses and patients the resources needed to ensure safe staffing and quality patient care at the bedside.

In the last three years, M Health Fairview closed two hospitals in the middle of a pandemic, including the state’s only dedicated COVID-19 hospital, at the same time CEO James Hereford took a 90 percent raise to more than $3.5 million in annual compensation. Sanford health paid a $49.5 million golden parachute to their disgraced CEO after he spread medical disinformation. And Essentia Health CEO David Herman took a $1 million raise in 2020, to now make more than $2.6 million each year.

Fuck these health care companies who are using govt to limit the health care market and screw us over and make millions.

    • Pope Jimbo

On the other hand, fuck the nurses union for using the term “medical disinformation” when referring to the termination of Sanford Health’s CEO. His “disinformation”?

I’m not gonna wear a mask, it is symbolic

In the 1,000-word email sent Nov. 18, Mr. Krabbenhoft said he had COVID-19, but he’s now back in his office working without a mask. He said he won’t be wearing a mask because doing so would only be a “symbolic gesture.” He considers himself immune from the virus.

“The information, science, truth, advice and growing evidence is that I am immune for at least seven months and perhaps for years to come, similar to that of chicken pox, measles, etc. For me to wear a mask defies the efficacy and purpose of a mask and sends an untruthful message that I am susceptible to infection or could transmit it,” Mr. Krabbenhoft wrote. “I have no interest in using masks as a symbolic gesture when I consider that my actions in support of our family leave zero doubt to my support of all 50,000 of you. My team and I have a duty to express the truth and facts and reality and not feed the opposite.”

I’d say that in light of what we know now (and some of us knew then) Krabbenhoft was on the right side of history.

      • The Gunslinger

I had the misfortune of having to go to the ER yesterday with my wife and daughter because my daughter was having some sort of panic/anxiety attack. The bitch at the desk was handing everyone a face mask as they came in. I politely said “no thank you”. But they went full code red mask nazi and I ended up leaving. I’m just not willing to play along anymore. I still feel like a putz. Thankfully all the tests they did came back normal. Having teenagers can really suck.

      • Pope Jimbo

I brought my aunt to a hospital for an appointment this week and it was pretty relaxed. Definitely a lot of signs saying masks were required, but lots of people were walking around unmasked without getting screamed at.

I ordered a coffee and sat in the coffee shop without a mask and no one cared.

ER yahoos are probably on another level though, I bet.

Every time I start thinking of selling off my kids to gypsies, I remember that for the most part the reason I care so much is because I love them so much. But still, that gypsy money could come in handy.

I was hopeful that the mask thing was over. I had a physical 2 months back and while they still had the signs up and I was the only person in the office without a mask, nobody said anything.

    That durn deep state!

Unfortunately, instead of using its size and unique relationship with the federal government to lead the way toward a clean energy future, TVA is undermining the Biden administration’s climate goals and putting the communities it serves at risk by prolonging its reliance on carbon-emitting technologies — even when cleaner ones are available.

Maybe, I’m just spit-balling here, but maybe, the good Congressman who wrote this, would consider this an example of a lack of accountability in the bureaucracy. That maybe that bureaucracy should be answerable to the President, and Congress. That would mean giving up the belief in those Top Men within the bureaucracy though, and for any kind of progressive that’s probably too much to ask.

    • AlexinCT

Clean energy future means that the evil green movement kills about 6 or 7 billion of the 8 billion people on the planet and makes the survivors live as medieval serfs (same standard of living) while the new aristocracy will be the only ones with access to mo0dern tech and conveniences.

      • juris imprudent

Modern tech and conveniences exist because of the scale of markets serving the masses, not the few. Of course it isn’t surprising that the parasite class doesn’t understand that.

      • AlexinCT

They won’t care that buying an iPhone or iPad will go from costing $1000 today to $200K in their utopia, cause they will have all the wealth anyway.

      • juris imprudent

That’s kind of the point – they won’t have that wealth. The wealth exists because of the scale – busting one destroys the other.

      • Shiny Nerfherder

      • AlexinCT

      • juris imprudent

Wait – you said they would have all the wealth that exists now so they can swim in their pools of gold coins and that’s what they want. How can they also want to live in misery as long as they can enforce more misery on others?

      • AlexinCT

They would have plenty of wealth for a very, very long time. They are already making sure of that. And part of that plan is about taking it from us and keeping it for themselves.

Three Russians and a Ukrainian are on trial for their alleged roles in the aviation disaster, which led to the deaths of 298 people onboard the plane.

The Dutch court today said that Russia had overall control of the separatist forces in eastern Ukraine at the time when the plane was shot down.

‘From half May 2014 Russia had so called overall control over the People’s Republic of Donetsk,’ presiding judge Hendrik Steenhuis said referring to the region where the passenger flight was shot down on July 17, 2014.”

The suspected shooter is former Virginia football player Christopher Darnell Jones Jr., who was arrested by police Monday. Jones, 22, was denied bail during a court hearing Wednesday.

Jones faces three counts of second-degree murder, two counts of malicious wounding and additional gun-related charges.

    (from ESPN)

Second-degree? Seems pretty pre-meditated to me.

    • Gustave Lytton

Charging with 2nd degree means he can be arrested and held without need to substantiate premeditation, just that there was a murder. Charges can be upgraded as the investigation concludes.

(Or not, as prosecutors get a lot of discretion in what they eventually charge for a trial).

      • db

From my understanding, some states effectively only have a 2nd-degree murder charge, as the 1st degree charge is still a capital crime, and by policy they don’t do executions and won’t prosecute to that level. Not sure if VA is one of those jurisdictions.

    Thwarting progress

Pundits and polling ahead of Election Day predicted that a “red wave” was coming for the House, with the GOP needing to flip just five seats to win the majority. But it quickly became clear on election night that Republicans would not see the huge returns many had anticipated. That the GOP won control by such a thin margin suggests that widespread enthusiasm for former President Donald Trump and his MAGA movement may be declining in some areas of the country.

Over the summer, Democrats gained a narrow lead in the polls after the conservative-leaning Supreme Court’s decision to rescind federal abortion rights in June.

But Roe v. Wade’s demise — despite abortion rights being widely popular nationwide — wasn’t enough for voters to totally shun the GOP. The party’s vow to destabilize the economy and push spending cuts to Social Security and Medicare should they take control of the House apparently wasn’t enough to repel most voters.

Republican control of the House is a disaster for President Joe Biden’s agenda, which will most likely be set ablaze by the GOP in the next Congress. Without a majority in the House, Democrats can all but say goodbye to their hopes of passing progressive climate, education and racial equity measures.

A tiny minority of votes in the House will put the whammy on our social justice steamroller. That’s just not fair.

The warning came as the Department of Justice asked a federal judge in Texas to stay an order that has temporarily blocked the Biden administration’s debt relief program.

“Unless the [Education] Department is allowed to provide debt relief, we anticipate there could be an historically large increase in the amount of federal student loan delinquency and defaults as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Education Department Undersecretary James Kvaal said in the filing.

The house of cards is getting so rickety it will no longer hold its own weight.

It were the panicdemic wot dunnit. Other than that, it would have been A-okay.

      Wut?

“If we don’t allow them to skip out on their debts, we run the risk of them not paying their debts” – did I get that right?

    • R.J.

I don’t think student loans are risk based anymore. You apply, you get loans. There should be an appraisal to make sure you are a good responsible student and that you are taking a viable major that could get you a job. Right now you can get a massive loan for a Bachelor in Underwater Basket Weaving and then default.

      • slumbrew

Put the schools on the hook for part of the money if the loan doesn’t get paid back.

You’ll see standards toughen up immediately.

      • Gustave Lytton

Or tuition/fees rise to cover the hook.

      • slumbrew

Which will increase the size of the loans, which will increase the size of the hook, which will increase the size of the loans…

        MMT, FTW!

The borrowers most in jeopardy of defaulting are those for whom Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan would have wiped out their balance entirely, Kvaal said. The administration estimated its policy would do so for around 18 million people.

“These student loan borrowers had the reasonable expectation and belief that they would not have to make additional payments on their federal student loans,” Kvaal said. “This belief may well stop them from making payments even if the Department is prevented from effectuating debt relief.”

“Unless the Department is allowed to provide one-time student loan debt relief,” he went on, “we expect this group of borrowers to have higher loan default rates due to the ongoing confusion about what they owe.”

That’s not how loan sharking works.

As such, crew on the Virgin Atlantic flight that carried the English national football team to the tournament were allowed no such freedom of self-expression.

However, the airline has sent the Three Lions to the Gulf nation on its “Rain Bow” Airbus A350-1000. The jet, registered as G-VPRD, is also emblazoned with Virgin Atlantic’s LGBTQ+ icon, Oscar, wearing rainbow-striped sneakers and trailing the Union Jack behind him.

This isn’t going to be anything but team red version of the whole J6 shit. The one difference being all the J6 was exaggerated bullshit and the corruption of team blue and especially Biden, are real. However it will be nothing more than a choreographed shitshow for the fans which will be left feeling cheated after it is all done and nothing comes of it.

The idea that the Reps aren’t jettisoning McConnell and what the fuck’s his face in the House just shows they haven’t and never will learn a damn thing. Hell, The Turtle deserves just as much of the blame for the relatively poor showing as Trump and maybe even a bit more.

Ukrainian Analysis Identifies Western Supply Chain Behind Iran’s Drones

See the power and effectiveness of restrictions on the sale of technology.

Out of more than 200 technical components identified by Ukrainian investigators that make up the innards of the captured drone, roughly half were made by firms based in the U.S., and nearly a third by companies in Japan, according to the report.

Iran’s fleet of unmanned military aircraft, along with the precision-guided missiles they can carry, is now seen by Western security officials as a bigger immediate threat than Iran’s nuclear program.

Why do they persist with this shit? Nuclear program boogeyman is dead, so now we need to worry about the skies over America darkened by millions of UMAs and suicide drones? Gfy.

Horton told us, but I keep losing track. We want to go to war with Iran because of SA? Or Israel?

The Ukrainian government is warning Western allies that it is anticipating increased Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure in the coming days and that Kyiv does not have enough replacement parts to bring heat and power back online if those occur, according to two congressional officials and one Western official briefed on U.S. intelligence.

Ukrainian officials have in recent days asked their American counterparts and more than half a dozen European countries for assistance preparing for a prolonged period with limited electricity and gas — a scenario Kyiv expects to complicate fighting on the ground and displace civilians, the officials and an adviser to the Ukrainian government said.

    ——-

“This is one of the most critical issues we’re discussing with the Americans and Europeans right now,” the adviser to the Ukrainian government said, adding that some Ukrainians have already fled the country in fear that the energy crisis will only grow worse. “The winter will be really tough.”

A spokesperson for the National Security Council did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

This is a perfect opportunity to build a clean grid, from the smoking rubble up.

Top congressional Republicans, likely to be in control of the House come next year, have suggested that the U.S. should re-evaluate its aid to the besieged ally. Some GOP lawmakers have indicated that a so-called “compromise” could include a continuation of the military assistance but a scaling-back of economic aid.

The U.S. has for years engaged with Ukraine through the Department of Energy to provide technical expertise on the production, storage and transportation of energy in the country, particularly during the winter months.

In 2021, Adderall, both generic and branded, was prescribed 41.4 million times in the U.S. This is up more than 10% from 2020, according to IQVIA.

Reports from The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal suggest an ADHD diagnosis, and therefore an Adderall prescription, became easier to obtain and more popular during the pandemic.

ADHD services are becoming readily available online in response to a growing awareness of mental health and an increasing demand for telehealth.

Some online services diagnosed people with ADHD remotely, after a 30-minute video call, according to The Wall Street Journal. The report states this is much faster than a typical diagnosis from an in-person psychiatrist.

I’m not gonna lie, I tempted. I’ve heard good things about recreational Adderall.
