It’s the start-ish of the new year and many people’s thoughts turn to resolutions or goals. I don’t really make resolutions but I have a long standing goal of reading one book a week and at least one non-fiction book each month. I’ve never made it an entire year, in 2022 I only read 32 books and an embarrassing dearth of non-fiction. I don’t usually have a problem finishing a book in seven days where I fail is when I lose interest in reading altogether and go a few months not reading anything. Do you make reading goals, how do you keep your interest in reading going if/when it wanes? Enjoy this Glibcrostic and leave your answers in the comments, or don’t…you know…free country and what not.

Do you make reading goals, how do you keep your interest in reading going if/when it wanes?
I just try to read books faster than I buy them.
Which I’ve failed at recently.
I’ve actually managed to bring the queue down substantially, which has me itching to go buy some more books.
Kindle makes it difficult for me to adhere to that.
And all you motherfuckers recommending books!
I don’t write them that fast.
Speaking of which…
Speaking of which, I just finished drafting a story to be posted here once I get a second opinion on whether it works or not.
Is that 3/3 of your goal or 4/3?
Only 3/3rds
Huzzah!
And formally submitted.
If I get anything else done this three day weekend, that will be extra, but I’ve met the commitment I made Friday.
You have shamed us all with your productivity.
Good job!
Naw, I was shamed because I hadn’t submitted anything in a while.
And Prime giving me two free books a month, even though I rarely read them (they are usually not my thing or just poorly written) I still download them and can feel them there, sitting on my virtual TBR pile and silently judging me.
Have you ever downloaded a good one? I haven’t downloaded one in a couple years, they are so bad.
There was one a while back that was a passable ex-military turned private security guy who gets caught up in some shit story. It was pretty cookie cutter for the genre but it didn’t actually suck.
I don’t add pressure to pleasure, which is what the listening of books (don’t take time to read, I listen in the car) represents.

Mike McDaniel is psyching himself out.
It looks like the Bills are going to fail in their attempt to lose the game. However, they will fail to cover the spread.
“They might have even better ahead of them!”
/Romo, I think
They better.
They struggled to beat a team with a third string quarterback. If they don’t play better they will get killed in the next game.
Dolphins defense earned their money today.
Did they? Or is Josh Allen just really reckless with the football?
Turnovers aren’t the killer they used to be. It’s also not as easy to turn the ball over in the modern NFL as it used to be. It feels like half his throws are 30 yards down field into coverage. One interception was unlucky and on the WR. His fumbles and the other interception were all on him. Dolphins defense wasn’t doing anything spectacular.
You have to see a guy rushing free off the edge there if you are Allen. He almost coughed up another big one that would/could have lost the game in the 4th where he held onto the ball way too long in the pocket. Didn’t even step up.
Fair points, but they were able to pressure all day. And that sack/fumble was murder.
Allen sure is a petulant little bitch, though.
I’m not so sure. Fumbles are more or less random, but the thinking used to be that “an interception was just as good as a punt.” And in recent decades, TD to INT ratio is way up. How much of this is because of rule changes, I can’t say (I’m sure it has a big part). But here are some recent QBs and their career TD/INTs:
Drew Brees 571 / 243
Matt Ryan 381 / 183
Aaron Rodgers 475 / 105
Carson Palmer 294 / 187
Philip Rivers 421 / 209
Now compare them to some HOF types from years past:
Fran Tarkenton 342 / 266
Len Dawson 239 / 183
Terry Bradshaw 212 / 210
Ken Stabler 194 / 222
Joe Namath 173 / 220
I gotta conclude that ball security from your QB is a lot more important than it used to be. Admittedly, maybe not the best stat (not going to look up career INT %age). Case in point: Jameis Winston led the league in TDs a couple of years ago, and was kicked to the curb because of too many INTs.
Counterpoint: Trevor Lawrence last night.
Dolphins should look into taking less than an hour to call in plays.
Hey The Hyperbole, Thanks for the puzzle and reason for personal reflection about book reading or the lack of thereof.
I read that 14JAN is “the most depressing day of the year..” so if you are reading this and in a good state of mind it is all sunshine and roses from here.
I recently have tried to incorporate the 5 Tibetan Rites into my daily routine. It really opens up your vortices or something… Check out how to do it on Youtube or don’t. It takes about 10 minutes total. Start slow, get some dizzy, core strength and loosen up the shoulders and neck. Afterward have a nice cold shower.
Get lean; stay lean.
Go Bengals!
On various planes I reread the “Price of Glory” by Alistair Horne. First published in 1962 it is all the horror that was the Battle for Verdun in 1916.
In a small English language bookstore in Berlin I picked up a first edition of “The Last Battle” in Germany and of course read it.
I also read a very forgettable Poul Anderson Norse scenario novel.
The sound on the Fox coverage of the Minnesota/NY wild card game is terrible.
Whoever is at the mix board needs to be sacked.
The Vikings defense seems to have stayed home today.
Watching bits of games today and last night, game volume is too low. Then commercials are fucking blaring.
I finally got back to reading again, having access to great books helps.

Like what you read!

After being interrupted by a late brunch (at that point, I think it’s actually “lunner,”) I finally got the puzzle solved, but had to resort to checking at the end to fill in or correct the last few letters.
I’ve learned not to set reading goals for the year. I’m trying to read more nonfiction, mainly history. Most recently I’ve been on a late Middle Ages/early Renaissance Europe kick and decided it was finally time to read A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century, which I’ve just started. (Does ’78 publication make it old enough to be considered a “classic”?)
I needed help, but the puzzle is great! Thanks, Hype!
I suppose I should take a break from the bookkeeping, but I really want to close things out in January. My brain is turning to accounting mush.
Take a break. Bookkeeping with errors may be worse than unfinished bookkeeping.
I have been reading too little. Mostly it’s because I have been working fairly long hours so I spend a good amount of time here decompressing. The only sure fire way I have found to get my reading done is to turn everything off. Then I can focus on reading.
This time of year is when I read the most, it gets dark early and it’s cold, It’s easy to mix a cocktail or two and put on like uh, you know, like shopping music,
Something thats not too interruptive and settle in for the night with a good book.

That was really cool.
Think about how much carbon they just released on our dangerously warming climate.
I got the cheese clue right away LOL
Still tearing through the ‘Hap and Leonard’ books – started book 5 last night.
That was the first of your puzzles I have worked on and finished. That was cool.
🤘🏼
But “yo mama so _____” doesn’t fit into E.
I’m going to bed.
And in bed I try to read the dictionary but I never finish.
I get up to P.
I’m not reading or writing anything I’m not paid to read or write. I’m making stuff. Right now it’s an afghan.
You’re knitting a shaggy hound?
Yes.
When I managed a bookstore and was divorced, I read about 2-3 books a week, which is easy when you can just grab one off the shelf, take it home, and read with no distractions.
Now that I am 20 years into my second marriage, even though she likes to read, there is way more distractions, such as a working TV… Anyway, no reading plan other than going through one SF, one crime, and one classic. Not so much on the SF any more, which seems to be replaced with non-fiction, mostly of the technical variety with some history.
Right now we have some Talbot Mundy on deck, Black Light. Not too sure what it is about, but so far it seems to be about sneaking into a Hindo temple sometime in the thirties.
Next is either going to be The Anubis Gates in a reread, or possibly some Lafcadio Hearn short stories.
As far as buying books, I just pick them up without worrying about when I will get to them. I just like having them around for when I am in the mood.
The Anubis Gate is so great.
Just read his ‘Stolen Skies’; he’s lost his fastball, but still enjoyable.
Yeah, I think he quit drinking and got a new editor. Just not the same. But, if you haven’t read Last Call or Dinner at Deviants Palace, put those on your list.
Loved Last Call. Haven’t read the other, will remedy that.
‘Declare’ is still my favorite.
I need to reread Declare, as that left me cold at the time. But everyone else loves it, so… me? Dunno.
By the way, thanks for the heads up on Gibson. So sad, he had one of the best post-9/11 novels in Pattern Recognition.
Oh yeah, I remember liking that.
I may remember it fondly because Declare was the first of his I read.
The Stress Of Her Regard left me cold, though that may be because I don’t really know my Romantic writers.
We’ll see if Gibson gets his head out of his ass for the next book – truthfully, he’s always been uneven.
In honor of the earlier thread . . . .
Fortunately, I get paid to read – at least to some extent. So, I get to read history books as part of my job which is nice.
Then, I read fiction at night to clear out my brain. Thrillers, sci-fi. Also some older detective stuff that folks here suggested. Also decided I should read some classic American fiction and just finished “Riders of the Purple Sage.”
I’ve been reading the Lucus Davenport series by John Sandford, and J.D. Robb’s “In Death” series, plus assorted other stuff.
Who needs goals when you’re really enjoying what you’re reading? Supposed to be a pleasure, not a chore.
*looks up Lucus Davenport* 32 books! yeah that’s a pass, I’m sure there are exceptions* but I rarely find a series that goes on for more than 8 or 9 books that doesn’t’ get repetitive or “jump the shark”
*Hap and Leonard, and Jack Taylor. And if I’m being honest those both do become a bit repetitive but the writing is good enough I can ignore it,
Ian Rankin’s Rebus series is an exception.
I’m only on book four so I’ll have to take your word for it. But so far they’ve been great.
Honestly, a couple of the later ones make me wonder, but the characters are sold enough to carry it.
And I drank in the actual Oxford Bar.
Sandford absolutely jumps the shark around two-thirds of the way through the series. I don’t think he’s even writing his recent stuff himself anymore. Not saying to not read them, but get them at the library.
I’ve read book 1 of Lucus Davenport, and the three novel book for 7 thru 9. Really good so far. Trying to go in order, and will abandon when it gets repetitive.
Same deal with Jack Reacher novels – jumped lots of sharks toward the end of the series, but some great stuff early on.
Discworld. Of course, that’s kind of a cheat because there’s multiple series set in the same world.
The Matt Helm series from Donald Hamilton, and Richard Stark’s Parker novels, both went over 20 books without getting boring. The obvious lesson is to only read series from people named Donald.
Vikings drive and season crumbling…don’t worry, here comes a joke of a roughing the passer call.
Lol.
This is Vikings football. For more than 50 years!
4th and long and you throw a shorty to the TE. When you have three amazing receivers.
Cousins sucks balls.
Or OT on 3rd down, brought to you by Denny Green
Also to end the half. Fuck Denny Green. RIP
I maintain the missed kick in the playoffs wasn’t Gary Anderson’s fault. The Vikings had one more down they could have tried to get in range for a kick in regular time. Instead they risked going to OT. ON 3RD DOWN.
Preach it sister. Any time anyone as much as says Gary’s name, I start cursing Denny’s name and try to explain the them why it wasn’t Gary’s fault.
It was Lin Elliott’s fault though.
Sorry, not sorry.
That was one of the more cheap ass roughing the passer calls I’ve ever seen, especially in a critical moment. Thankfully the Giants still prevailed and saved my six team parlay.
Drinks are on KSuell!
Heheh, after the Bengals win, I just need old Tom to come through tomorrow nite and I got the six games picked.
*fingers crossed*
Vikings join the Chargers in perfect end of season futility.
Condolences to all my Vikings peeps. Look on the bright side, better now than in a game or two or three.
That’s the Giants’ job now.

I might’ve missed this earlier, but it appears that the search for the SCOTUS leaker has narrowed down to a few individuals.
Wall Street Journal link, but I think it works.
Holy smokes, that was exciting
How are the Bengals not blowing out the Ravens?
In case you were wondering whether the Biden doc reveals were some sort of political psyop.
It’s just so crude and blatant.
When you can get away with being crude and blatant, why go to the trouble of trying to be subtle?
Well, a lot of us have called it for a while that they were going to pull out something to get rid of Dementia Joe. I was in the camp that believed it would happen after the midterms, as they wouldn’t want that kind of distraction beforehand. Also, if the Dems were creamed in the midterms they might have gotten Joe out without having to resort to such measures. The 100,000 dollar question is how are they going to push Kammie aside for Gavin (or someone else) as there is no way they can sell her as a candidate, and not even the Dems can fortify that election if a halfway decent Repub is running.
Dems also got a big enough majority in the Senate now they don’t need her to approve her own successor, so that’s helpful. And if I were her? I’d be worried about how much I was worth as a dead martyr, because I fully believe there are people out there who would do it to get one. Think of the value of a ‘white supremacist’ shooting the first black woman president? And only the easily silenced ‘fringe websites’ would even mention anything questionable about the shooter and his Horrible Nazi Manifesto, that someone in the FBI is probably writing right this minute.
I endorse this cynicism.™️
If Kammie were elevated to the White House, whomever she nominated as her VP would have to be approved by both houses of Congress. Republicans in the House could make a little hay with that were they so inclined, possibly moderating the choice from some progressive bomb-thrower to an elder statesman type. Ralph Northam or Russ Feingold, for instance.
In a “keep your friends close, but your enemies closer” type of move, she could nominate Mayor Pete. Since a sitting Vice President isn’t likely to primary her, that lessens the number of potential rivals for her in ’24.
Or if she wanted to go full “Yaaaas, Kween!” Kammie could nominate Mary Landrieu, Carol Mosley-Braun, or… Bill Clinton’s wife.
If it’s supposedly a crime, why wouldn’t there be FBI raids to determine if there are further documents?
I’m just amused AF that they got Schiff of all people to turn.
Which team does Schaffer play for? Did he turn?
Proven liar Adam Schiff.
🙄
Fuck that dude. He’s creepy AF.
Schiff does what he’s told. Turning isn’t really a concept that applies to him.
This. Where are the 4 dozen armed to the teeth agents in body armor and with CNN in tow?
Seems like so far HBO hasn’t messed up ‘The Last of Us’

Our local Chipotle sucks.
#TeamBubbakoos
Considering what their stuff does to my innards I think all of their food must be viral.
I’ve never understood the Chipotle hate. I’ve only eaten there a few times (I rarely eat out at all), and I recall it being perfectly fine, if uninspiring.
The blandness is where the hate comes from I think. As for me, I probably just got a bad batch but I’m not eating there again.
Dittoes. I used to eat lunch there a lot in the (way) before times.
We stopped going to our local Chipotle not due to the food, but the service sucked. The Bubbakoos is consistently solid with their food and service.
The “let’s see what’s ‘happening’ on TikTok today” school of “journalism” sucks way more.

It was a jailbreak!
“Person purposefully let leopard loose at Dallas zoo: Officials said”
Gad Saad shits on Sam Harris for the stupidest take on Covid and the vax I’ve ever heard a supposed intellectual make:
https://youtu.be/xoc7dT1tkHo
The Harris clip begins at 6min 15 sec. The man’s just straight shit stupid (or mendacious but even the mendacity is being handled stupidly). How in the hell do people take the guy seriously?
“In some sense we got unlucky in how benign COVID was…”
This is exactly in line with Harris and his take on cheating in the 2020 election. What matters most is whether the pseudointellectuals like himself remain in charge and their opinions respected.
He would absolutely be putting dissenters in the gulags given half a chance. He’s an evil piece of shit.
Mornin’, reprobates!
Hope you are all enjoying your three-day weekend. For those who do not have one…
So sorry!
From upthread: Biden will be replaced by Harris who will be replaced by Michelle Obama who’ll win two terms. Something’s going on, that’s for damn sure.
Fuck you for putting that thought in my head.
