Hiring standards are often dumb, as they are far too often arbitrary. Far too often the result of regulatory capture or a barrier to access within the industry in question but every once in a while one comes up that seems like a no brainer.
This is my review of Brooklyn Brewing Co Black Ops Barrel Aged Stout:
The City of Philadelphia is facing a few issues in their attempt to recruit applicants to man their lifeguard towers at community pools. Before I elaborate on this any further I will post this obligatory link to everyone’s favorite scene in The Sandlot. Enjoy.
In 2020 the city didn’t open its pools at all, due to the hysteria. While they had a few issues recruiting in 2021, it wasn’t as big a deal because they didn’t open all of the pools. So now that they are opening up the issue is finding enough lifeguards.
So they removed the requirement the lifeguard know how to swim:
So for the 2023 pool season in Philadelphia, the city has started recruiting early. And if you can’t swim, you can still apply. That’s right. According to representatives of the city’s Parks & Recreation Department I spoke with, the city is actively recruiting lifeguard candidates who would sink like a stone if you threw them in the deep end today. The city will provide free swimming lessons at Lincoln High School in Mayfair to anybody who doesn’t know how to swim, assuming they are committed to testing into the lifeguard program this summer.
This harkens back to the mid-00’s when the Army began to relax their recruiting standards to allow recruits with criminal records. Except its not. Does this one go a bit too far? Maybe, but at least it removes a barrier to entry.
I don’t come across Brooklyn Brewing too often, but I haven’t come across a bad offering. This one is slightly different in that is begins as a Russian Imperial Stout (rather than something much sweeter) and aged in repurposed Four Roses Whiskey barrels for nine months. The result is something a bit easier to drink, rather than being reminiscent of eating an entire box of liquor cordials. Nicely done. Brooklyn Brewing Co Black Ops Barrel Aged Stout: 4.2/5 11.5% abv
The idea that there are grown-ass adults out there who can’t swim, is the biggest black pill I’ve ever taken.
Why should that be a skill every single person possesses?
Have you ever been attacked by a Minnesota lake?
Normally I’d say “80 percent of the Earth’s surface” – but hell, there are plenty of people that will never come within miles of a body of water you could (or would) swim in.
Not to mention many people don’t really have any inclination or desire to go on/in the water. And even if they do, there are things like boats and lifejackets that make the ability to swim optional.
Eh… if you’re on a boat and don’t have a life jacket, you should know how to swim.
/remembers the South Park homeschool boy who had to wear a life jacket everywhere.
Didn’t say otherwise and it doesn’t disprove my point.
Akshully, you shouldn’t be on a boat without a lifejacket. Regardless of your ability to swim.
Agreed. Just commenting on:
I wouldn’t consider a boat alone something to make swimming optional. With the lake right here, I’d be surprised if the majority of people in Cleveland didn’t know how to swim. Hell, I wouldn’t expect someone to be on the breakwall fishing if they didn’t know how to swim.
Of course boats make it optional*.
*optional =/= wise
I had an ex who didn’t know how to swim. Having grown up on the shore, the idea boggled my mind. She grew up in Utah, but still…
I totally agree that knowing how to swim is a basic life skill. I admit I forgot to get my kids swimming lessons when they were very young. I barely got XX in just under the age limit at the local community center. I completely missed the age requirement for XY. He half-assed learned in Boy Scouts. He got a couple of private lessons from retired swim instructors. XX can swim. XY knows how not to drown, but my failing there is cringe.
What Percentage Of The Population Can Swim?
I could probably do all those. Depends how long a “full length pool” is.
I used to swim two miles a day before my neck started giving me problems.
I miss it.
I can do all of those things. I think I _had_ to do all those things when getting scuba certified (never did the open water portion, so I am not, but did the pool and the written exam)
Higher edge/lower water level, no spillover to climb, and look like a shipwreck survivor flopping into a lifeboat.
I can still do all of that and I am a decrepit old fuck. But i might forget how to swim if Wendy is lifeguarding.
Some random thoughts – back home while I pack to fly out tomorrow morning to NOLA. Gonna be on orders for most of the next 2 months.
Is OMWC running the Glibs twitter account or Webdom? Was a little surprised to see this show up in the feed for our Family Friendly site ;p (Very NSFW). Interesting thread though.

If I told you who ran it, it would make total sense.
Has to be Q.
Someone sucrose deficient?
That describes several of us. You have any idea how long Warty goes without eating carbs of any kind?
So, a way long time ago in the Single Times, I was low-carbing pretty seriously. I was at 20 grams per day for about a year and a half, all cruciferous veggies or lettuce or cheese. I felt good pretty much all the time, and I always tell people Dr. Atkins saved my life.
I need to get back to that.

Whoever it is, is my hero.
I’ll be in MS east of NOLA on and off over the next few months for work, if you’re interested in meeting up maybe we can make it happen.

🙂
This year’s offering was an abomination. It was an offense against Man and Nature. It stinks in the nostrils of God.
Thin/weak. The closest it came to any flavor of the Four Roses was if someone tripped and broke a bottle near one of the casks.

I love The Hof. He is second only to The Shat.
I’m wondering what I did with all my teenage scrapbooks of The Hof. I was very pathetic.
Wait….his work as a thespian or a musician?
I’d be lying if I said I like The Hof’s music. But there is something endearing about the way he went out and did it. The Shat has a just say yes attitude. He can do no wrong.
Final answer The Shat > The Hof as a thespian and musician.
And then there’s Carl Lewis.
I can’t imagine what it’s like going through life preoccupied by so much terrible music.
I mean, Nightrider was cool.
Just came back from a run to the local brewery for something that’s probably similar. They haven’t done a release for a couple of years (shit – 5 really?), so I wanted to get there as soon as it was released.
Looks good and will get your drunk on.
Picked up 4 bottles. One a session is about it.
Oooohhh – special unit!

Meh. They’ll train you. Fine. But, I’m sure you can’t raise a family of 4 on the pay of a life guard, so the job shouldn’t exist either! #Equity #LivingWage
Just give ’em a pool chain and they’ll be ready for anything.
All pools should be designed to be drown-proof!
I’ve got a bomber of Black Ops in the basement from … ten years ago? The bottle is not dated, I think it was the first run. Cork stopper, wired down.
I bought two at the time, $20 each. Split the first with my brothers, didn’t really care for it, never bothered opening the second.
If you don’t want it…I’ll take it off your hands.

Eveyone Should Want One
You know why? Because if you wear this thing, you get the hair and hands of a girl and the hairy legs of a guy. Who doesn’t want that? Imagine if you wear one on both arms!
Oooh. I scrolled down.
Ah. Now Hyperion’s babbling makes sense. A dude with painted nails and a chick with leg hair. Sign me up.
Hyperion’s babbling always makes sense.
WTF? How many times do you see that? Who is their target audience? That ain’t no dude, those hands are of a girl. The legs are a guy’s legs. I think it is photoshopped for max wokeness effect. Sometimes you are too woke for your own good.
Nah, just trying to beat Apple at their own game.
I know it’s long been a dead thread, but the painted nails part of my comment was referring to the black guy with his hands clasped behind his head.
Nah. Fat chick who doesn’t shave her legs, is my bet.

What I thought. And I was looking at it because I might buy a Google Pixel 7 phone and my wife knew that and sent me that link because I wear a FitBit and I’m not too happy with it, maybe time for an upgrade. That’s when I saw the half man/chic thingy.
You know FitBit is owned by Alphabet (the parent company of Google) now, right? There’s not that big of a difference between your FitBit and the Pixel watch.
I had to buy a new phone when my LG died. So I went with Samsung. I hated that phone for a couple of years and ditched it for a Google Pixel. I’m quite happy with the Pixel so far. So, I guess I am the target market for that pixel watch. But, that’s gonna discourage me a whole bunch.
Which one do you have? I have a Samsung A50. I’m not unhappy with the phone. I’m switching because I want to switch my phone plan to Google Fi.
Pixel 7
Forget the smart watch. I use a quartz watch with solar power. Best use of modern technology for a watch. Casio provides an excellent mechanism you see in a variety of watch brands now. Nobody is tracking your old-school watch.

Anti-vivisection bill
Utah is likely to become the first state to ban gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors this year.
The Utah Senate approved a bill Friday that would bar minors from receiving gender-affirming surgeries and place an indefinite moratorium on their access to puberty blockers and hormone therapy.
The bill, which the Utah House of Representatives approved Thursday, would be prospective, so minors who were diagnosed with gender dysphoria before the bill’s effective date, May 3, 2023, would still be able to receive care if they meet a list of requirements.
“Gender affirming”
Fuck off.
I don’t think banning is the right way to go, like banning abortion. Limited and specific care under tight and consice regulations maybe..but banning is just more foder for a larger voting age group
Banning is right, electoral effects be damned.
Unlike abortion, I doubt very many people are voting on this issue.
But the Dems having made it arguably their top issue after abortion means it won’t go away unless you convince majorities to stop voting for Democrats for all the reasons the vote for Democrats like free shit and inertia.
Utah takes the controversial position that cutting off a 14 year old’s dick is child abuse.
So hate. Much bigot.
Damn, I suffer when I get caught in the zipper on my pants. I don’t want to beyond thet.
for transgender minors
Letting this be a thing is child abuse.
State Sen. Michael Kennedy, a Republican who sponsored the bill and a family practice physician, told colleagues in a hearing last week that gender-affirming treatments “lack sufficient long-term research,” according to local radio station KUER.
“But still, our country is witnessing a radical and dangerous push for children to enter this version of health care,” he said.
State Sen. Daniel Thatcher, one of Kennedy’s Republican colleagues, disagreed and was the only Republican to speak out against a previous, though similar, version of the bill last week, KUER reported. He argued that though he and his colleagues might not understand gender-affirming care, “every credible medical organization on the planet says that that is the safest, best and most appropriate care to save those lives.”
Every credible medical organization; that’s an awfully short list.
So I guess if every credible medical organization told Sen. Thatcher to chop off his dick and balls, he would?
There is a bunch of good reporting (see Jesse Singal, Leor Sapir, and Wesley Yang) documenting the lack of long term research, the flimsy research some of these medical organizations rely on, and how European nations are going in the other direction because of the adverse consequences on their youth.
WTF they’re just making shit up now.
Where is the evidence for this? Where are piles of dead girly-boys and tomboys been hiding all these years?
…to save those lives
Oh so that explains the above average suicide rate for transitioners. Republican – stupid fuck, but usually stupid about something else.
I don’t think banning is the right way to go, like banning abortion. Limited and specific care under tight and consice regulations maybe..but banning is just more foder for a larger voting age group
As usual, the devil is in the details. But for minors, absent actual physical manifestation (as in hermaphroditic organ development), ban it. When they are 18, and fully informed… it’s the patient’s call.
I agree there.
Where is the evidence for this? Where are piles of dead girly-boys and tomboys been hiding all these years?
Suicide. An epidemic of self-harm as the direct result of refusing to accept and humor delusion. That’s what they’re going with.
Oh, I know. Not buying it.
And yet, curiously, the suicide rate for trans persons, especially the ones that mutilate themselves, is many times the average.
And the rate goes up for those that have transitioned.

Here’s a weird little factoid I just learned. There are a grand total of four CVS drugstores in Idaho. None of them are in Pocatello. Multiple Walgreens, but no CVS. Every other place I have lived, Walgreens and CVS are pretty much evenly distributed; across the street from one another, more often than not.
I prefer CVS.
I’ve noticed that you generally see CVS and Walgreen’s stores very close to each other. I don’t recall seeing all that many of them without the other nearby (but it would be easy for it to not register).
It seems weird that two direct competitors would be all up in each other’s grill like that, rather than trying to find places where the other wasn’t.
Walgreens and CVS desert here. We have Rite Aid and a bunch of independents that I will only use in an emergency.
I dropped the national chains when they refused to fill my ivermectin prescription. Support your local pharmacist.
I thought every pharmacy in NYC was a Duane Reade.
Not outside Manhattan.
It seems weird that two direct competitors would be all up in each other’s grill like that, rather than trying to find places where the other wasn’t
Most of their revenues for both chains come from the pharmacy or clinics, right? Different health plans contract with either/or so it may not be like putting a BK next to a McDs.
From chatting with a Walgreen’s exec many years back (at the time Walgreen’s was the leader, not sure about now). CVS would specifically target locations near any Walgreens’, and start scouting once an opening was announced. At least locally, you used to always see Burger Kings and McDonalds near each other as well. Now BK has been closing stores and one of the larger franchisees declared bankruptcy.
That may explain the virtually brand new BK down near UD Arena (and right across from McD’s) that has already closed.
Link about the bankruptcy filing. For some reason they filed in Akron (although they’re based out of the Chi-town area), which is why it popped up in my news feeds when it happened.
Yup. Turns out six BKs in the Dayton area closed recently, all owned by that franchisee.
That sounds like more than a competing-with-McDonalds problem.
A long time ago I read an article that said Mac D’s spent enormous amounts of money on research to decide where to open new stores. BK just waited until Mac Ds built a new one, then BK built a block away.
That was the thought process the exec said that CVS was using as well.
The only thing worth eating at BK is the sausage, egg, and cheese croissanwich.
Correct.
Jimmy Dean’s frozen sandwiches are pretty good. So I never need to fine a BK to get my fix.
Last time I went with Jimmy Dean’s (admittedly a long time ago) they were a little more expensive (per sandwich) than BK’s and much smaller than BK’s.
I buy 12-packs at Sams’s Club. They’re available whenever I want one. But, you are definitely paying for convenience. On the hand, the closest BK is 15 miles away.
Ah. Mine is 5 mins away, 2 doors down from the bank where I pay my rent, but I MIGHT get one every other month or so.
Yeah…the last time I set foot in a BK was because every Air Force base had one, except for Peterson AFB. Which incidentally was my last station.
I hate them both. I use a small independent pharmacy.
His name is Skeeter.
In Target stores?
When we took XY to South Dakota, we found out the CVS is in a Target store.
Back to the post: I am not good with lifeguards who have only been in the water and able to swim for a few weeks or months. A lifeguard needs to be comfortable and capable in the water.
You fucked up, Philadelphia. That means you can’t reopen all the pools. Sucks to be you. Don’t fuck up again, and shit like this won’t happen. Ya feckin’ morons.
It seems weird that two direct competitors would be all up in each other’s grill like that, rather than trying to find places where the other wasn’t.
I have always wondered about that. Maybe it’s easier to poach the other guy’s customers if people don’t have to alter their traffic pattern.
CVS started that. They moved in next to Walgreens to poach customers. Might have worked too, if they didn’t suck so bad. Don’t try to compete with a big chain if you ban cigarettes and take an hour to get a prescription in the drive through lane.
CVS actually surpassed Walgreens as the top pharmacy chain years back. Not saying it’s great service, but CVS is quite a bit larger now.
No expert here, but when you include all of CVS’s total business, it has a net worth four times the size of Walgreens. I think things flipped entirely when they purchased Aetna. They own 24% of the market for prescriptions compared to 18% for Walgreens.
And they are firmly part of the medical industrial complex. I won’t use them for anything if I can help it.
CVS sucks a big giant donkey cock. I was so mad when they bought Aetna (our carrier). Walgreen’s is awesome.
Walgreens also gets quite a large amount of sales from online items, which includes… marital aids.
It’s a medical device!
Shop at both auto parts store then buy the cheapest, pretty common vuainess practice.

Years ago, when CVS and Walgreen’s stores seemed to be popping up everywhere here in Ohio, someone told me each chain was trying to get the state’s Medicaid contract (I think it was Medicaid rather than Medicare,) and whichever one had the biggest market presence would win. Many of those stores have progressed in their life cycle to become “dollar” stores of one chain or another.
Right, or just collect on the stragglers in the area on a competitor’s Medicaid plan.

2. Would not be surprised if there were fatalities.
3. As a Tesla owner I recognize the color tone and location as coming from one the side cameras on the car.

Would be surprised if there weren’t.
Yeah, I put that in as a bit of a warning. Some people don’t knowingly want to see videos that show fatalities.
For example when those crowds were crushed to death in South Korea I felt no need to see any videos. Reading about it was about all I could take. Mind you if somebody sent me a video and I watched it I wouldn’t have freaked, however.

CVS vs Walgreen’s location tactics.
The most predatory thing I noticed about WalMart, long ago, was their tendency to build a store across the street from Kmart, in small to midsize cities. The obvious intent was to capitalize on established traffic. I first noticed it in Ashland, Ohio, which was the nearest “shopping town” to my grandparents’ farm. I started looking after that, it it was extremely common to see a shiny new and very busy WalMart in close proximity to a run down Kmart.
Ah, but does Walmart have that stale popcorn smell that hits you in the face as soon as you walk in the door??
One local ex-Kmart is now a Rural King, and I swear I can still smell the stale popcorn/rancid liquid butter/whatever the heck it was by the entrance.
The popcorn smell I always remember came from either Rink’s or Goldman’s when such a place was on Salem, c. 1977
Hmm…
I am old enough to know what KMart is. Then again, if you throw out Foley’s, Montgomery-Ward, Robinson-May, Best, Circuit City, that will probably throw my dates off even more,
