Good morning my malcontents! Due to us having a nice rack or the rack server, or something like that (I don’t know, I don’t speak nerd) we give you open links this morning.

Have at it my crusty curmudgeons!

How did St. Greta get there? It’s a long walk from Muri Buri Land to Germany.

Another reason to try to buy Greenland, establish it as an autonomous state and move all the watermelons there to let them play out their wildest fantasies using whatever power they see fit from on the island. See how long they last.

Look… it is right there in the name, St. Greta!

“Hallo!” growled Scrooge, in his accustomed voice, as near as he could feign it. “What do you mean by coming here at this time of day?”

I didn’t need to read this to know what kind of republican Cocaine Mitch was/is: He is one completely bought & paid for by the CCP.

    • juris imprudent

Speaking of disgust with Republicans. Apparently the Bulwark is now [openly] a Democratic house organ.

    • Brochettaward

And really, one doesn’t have to guess or infer. McConnell said it himself. On January 6, he spoke with Politico’s Jonathan Martin about the day’s events and admitted that “I feel exhilarated by the fact that this fellow finally, totally discredited himself.” Letting rip with his real feelings about a president who closed the Southern border; created the best American economy in decades, enriching people of all races; and kept America out of foreign wars, McConnell called Trump “despicable” and bragged how “We crushed the sons of b—-es…and that’s what we’re going to do in the primary in ’22.”

I had never seen these quotes.

yawning chasm between the Republican establishment and conservative voters who had long thought they had a home in the Republican party

Assumes facts nowhere in evidence except in the imagination of the writer. Falls directly under the “no one I know voted for Nixon” fallacy.

      • SDF-7

Wait… which part are you disputing? That conservative voters thought they had a place in the Republican party? That the GOPe has demonstrated suitable disregard for the policies / votes of conservative voters that you might fairly characterize it as a “yawning chasm” between the party stated goals and their actions?

Because with the omnibus, attempt at dreamer amnesty, gun control laws, etc…. I think the need for facts to dispute it would be more on your side than the writer’s from where I sit.

      • juris imprudent

The stated goals are a lie and have been for a long time. Anyone voting Republican based on that, and not what they ACTUALLY DO, is a fool – conservative or otherwise. That was my point about Reagan and the Department of Education.

      • SDF-7

Ok… so you’re just saying they shouldn’t have thought it (even though it is pretty clear that regardless of Reagan, etc… they have up to this point). Gotcha.

      • juris imprudent

Yeah – I mean I still vote for plenty of Republicans. But not because I believe a single word they say. I just assume they will be less bad than the Democrat alternative.

      • R C Dean

There is a yawning chasm, and has been for quite some time. Many Repub voters simply refuse/fail to see it, falling for the marketing campaign instead.

The Hispanic face of white supremacy and insurrection.

Solomon Peña, who lost his 2022 run for state House District 14, was arrested Monday by Albuquerque police, accused of paying and conspiring with four men to shoot at the homes of two state legislators and two county commissioners, authorities said.

“It is believed he is the mastermind” behind the shootings that happened in December and early January, Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina said in a news conference.

CNN has reached out to Peña’s campaign website for comment and has been unable to identify his attorney.

Before the shootings, Peña in November – after losing the election – had approached one of the legislators and some county commissioners at their homes with paperwork that he said indicated fraud was involved in the elections, police said.

An investigation confirmed “these shootings were indeed politically motivated,” Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller said Monday.

“At the end of the day, this was about a right-wing radical, an election denier who was arrested today and someone who did the worst imaginable thing you can do when you have a political disagreement, which is turn that to violence,” said Keller, a Democrat. “We know we don’t always agree with our elected officials, but that should never, ever lead to violence.”

“At the end of the day, this was about a right-wing radical, an election denier who was arrested today…

Andrew Tate: Bodyguard says ‘Some girls thought they’d be his next wife’

    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-64285341

“In an exclusive broadcast interview with the BBC, Bogdan Stancu said more than 100 women had passed through Mr Tate’s compound in Bucharest, since he began work there two years ago.

The former police intelligence officer said he was sometimes asked to physically remove women from the Tate house for being “too drunk” or “making problems”, but that no force was ever used.”

This guy worked for the Ministry of Internal Affairs “intelligence unit” which is the direct descendant of their secret police arm during communism. Well, there is one. Impeachment, it just doesn’t get used nearly enough.

  9. Banjos

I wake up at 5:50a if it’s my turn to do the links. Then I hit the snooze button for another 10 to 20 minutes before forcing myself out of bed, stumble to my kitchen to make myself coffee and eventually get to my desk where I search the web for articles for ya’ll to nitpick at. Then I do a quick google search for a featured image, try to find a song (which is always hindered by whatever ear worm is stuck in head) and then try to publish before 7a so I can go get my children dressed and off to school. If the website is broken between the window of 6a and 7a, ya’ll are waiting until I get back from my morning 3 mile walk if no one else is available to come along and throw something together.

    • AlexinCT

The UK Government has decided to block gender reform legislation in Scotland

      Color me shocked

“With the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill passed by MSPs from all parties in Holyrood on December 22, the deadline will be reached on Wednesday.

The Bill will allow trans people to obtain a gender recognition certificate (GRC) without the need for a medical diagnosis — a process known as “self-identification”.

It will also permit 16 and 17-year-olds to apply for a GRC for the first time, and would reduce the amount of time a person has to live in their acquired gender before they can be granted the document.”

We deal with defectors the old fashioned way

A former commander in Russia’s Wagner private military company has fled to Norway and is seeking asylum after crossing that country’s arctic border, according to Norwegian police and a Russian activist.

Andrei Medvedev, in an interview with a Russian activist who helps people seek asylum abroad, said that he feared for his life after refusing to renew his service with Wagner.

Medvedev said that after completing his contract, and refusing to serve another, he was afraid of being executed in the same manner of Yevgeny Nuzhin – a defector from Wagner who was killed on camera with a sledgehammer.

    Idiot wind shifts

President Joe Biden began the new year with the political winds at his back.

Amid the chaos of a fractured Republican majority trying to elect a House speaker, his administration was making a major public effort to show how the laws bolstering his ambitious policy priorities were showing tangible results. Democrats had evaded a bruising in the midterm elections and retained a Senate majority. There were signs inflation was beginning to ease. His party had coalesced around his prospective reelection bid. And his most apparent Republican challenger had not yet gained the full-throated support of his base.

But in the span of just a week, Biden’s political trajectory has dramatically shifted.

News broke one week ago that classified documents from Biden’s time as vice president were found at his former personal office in November. And now, the White House has moved into defensive mode in the face of questions about a lack of transparency and potential legal issues involving the misplacement of the documents.

Blood in the water. Let the feeding frenzy commence.

What about descendants of Union soldiers who were killed or wounded in the Civil War and who never owned slaves? If any of this goes through, I think they should get reparations from black people. They fought for no direct interest of their own, only to benefit slaves. If there’s going to be people getting paid, they should demand their “fair” share. Also, descendants of Slavs should get money from Turks. Also….

      Lol…oh, wait, you’re serious.

One aspect of Russiagate I’ve never really heard anyone talk about was how convenient it was for the critters at the DOJ and FBI who may have been at risk of losing their jobs (sooner, in a few cases) had they not been part of a big investigation of Trump. It was noted to some extent that Comey couldn’t be fired because Trump would be attacked endlessly for trying to influence the probe. It would be clear proof that hew as a Russian stooge or some such bullshit.

While Comey eventually made his exit, his underlings remained. The DOJ is the most powerful of the federal bureaucracies, and Trump was basically handcuffed and prevented from making any real change at the top levels.

We will move swiftly to accelerate the energy transition by deploying clean energy solutions, increasing the production and adoption of zero-emission vehicles in North America and transitioning to cleaner fuels. Needs more enlightened global utopian fascism

Chief executives and government ministers from around the globe are gathering for the annual World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, where for the last three years the focus has very much been on how to tackle the huge series of shocks that has hit the world economy.

From the wet market of Wuhan, to the Kremlin’s crazed calculations, pandemic and war have conditioned a path of record inflation and surging debts, with a third of the world expected to be in recession this year.

But there is some light at the end of the tunnel. And however distant a ski resort full of global leaders may sound, WEF is the sort of place where you get a sense as to whether a three-year storm may start to subside.

    ——-

However, there are also newer tensions emerging, raising questions about how far inflation will eventually fall, and some concern about where Britain sits in a much changed world.

The big shadow here is the threat of a transatlantic green trade war. Joe Biden’s new legislation to boost America’s green economy includes £300bn of subsidies for the purchase of electric cars, but only if they are mainly manufactured in North America. The Inflation Reduction Act also affects a swathe of other manufacturing and production and is persuading some European companies to relocate factories to the US. Even fertiliser companies are having their heads turned and wondering why European leaders aren’t bringing in similar laws.

The US suggests its new legislation is aimed at competing with China. But EU leaders are furious and about to respond, potentially with significant subsidies of their own, presumably also containing “Buy European” clauses.

Lie back, and think of Top Men.

  31. Penguin

“I love my right-wing friends who talk about [how] the tree of liberty is water of the blood of patriots,” he said.

Curiously the second part is missing here.

“If you need to work about taking on the federal government, you need some F-15s. You don’t need an AR-15.”

It sounds like I need both. Never mind that it would not be all that difficult to turn a fighter jet into a multimillion dollar paperweight.

“The Second Amendment, from the day it was passed, limited the type of people who could own a gun and what type of weapon you could own. You couldn’t buy a cannon.

I wonder who was limited. And yes you could.

  34. The Late P Brooks

This new divided Davos backdrop to the global economy could have profound consequences for how much things cost, and where they are made. It is a precise reversal of the consensus seen at the World Economic Forum for decades. Things are very much up for grabs here.

And lastly, many corporate leaders seem to have spent their Christmases being shocked by the cost-saving potential of the new artificial intelligence platform ChatGPT 3. There is a school of thought that the next iteration of this technology from OpenAI – ChatGPT 4 – could be so impactful as to cause a global economic shock. It will be a quantum leap for technology, but at the expense of making millions of existing jobs redundant.

The Emperor needs a new wardrobe again.

So today I go looking at some of these vanlife builds and I’m like, *I* don’t know how much they go for. This one is $164,000. This one is the cheapest one on the site and it’s $49,900.
