Friendly reminder: if you have not purchased flowers for your spouse now is probably too late, as they were all purchased earlier this morning. I myself, made the annual tribute which in lieu of being yelled at for buying something that is already dead, was simply ignored.
Now for some links!
Mexico “appears” to back down on their ban on imported GMO seed corn. I guess Mexicans suddenly like eating.
My pet peeve of the last year or so, are all the right wingers pronouncing it “Fintanol”.
“Experts say.” Experts also say they had a much more entertaining way of handling this.
That we allow negotiating with communists proves we are no longer a serious country.
For those entertaining the idea of living abroad, news you can use.
Records I have no intention of breaking.
Bolsonaro mulls a triumphant return to Brazil.
No shit? Both are leftists acceptable to the world establishment, and clearly won their elections.
Its been a while since I posted one of these. Enjoy.
Woah, Mexican links on time? MS account has been hacked by some white person.
MS is a White Hispanic.
Hmmm. I guess my kids are Brown Anglic.
Well, it could have been an asian.
No, they would have been 10 minutes early.
Good point.
And then we would want a second set of PM links, two hours later.
We’re on Caucasian Time.
20 Most Expensive Countries in Latin America
#2 Puerto Rico
“In an interview with The Associated Press, Reyes said forensic tests carried out in Danish and Canadian labs indicated a presence of “a great quantity of Cloristridium botulinum, which is incompatible with human life.” The powerful toxin can cause paralysis in the nervous system and death.”
That’s the bacteria, not the toxin. So maybe he died of bad canning?
“During his life, Neruda accumulated dozens of prizes, including the 1971 Nobel Prize for Literature, but in recent years criticism has appeared from feminist groups over a rape he committed in the 1930s and which he recounted in his book “I Confess That I Have Lived.” He also is criticized for abandoning his only daughter, Malva Marina, because she was born with hydrocephalus.”
Unlike Bart Simpson, I am not familiar with the works of Pablo Naruda, but even ignoring the commie thing, he sounds like an asshole.
Seconded.
Yes. He got off easy.
He is usually thought of as a great romantic poet. But, his actions in the ’30s kinda put the kibosh on that idea.

Ha, I get yelled at worse for buying flowers at a time when the market has jacked the hell out of the prices. I can buy her flowers anytime but Valentines.
Mrs. Holiness is pretty low maintenance, but flowers on V-Day are non-negotiable.
Luckily big supermarket nearby has set up a section of flowers that is machine like in efficiency and has good quality flowers for cheap. So it is mucho easy.
We just spent a long weekend at a bougie inn in Maine. She’ll get a card and like it (literally – she’s not big into V-Day)
WTF is Haiti doing in a list of Latin American countries?
It’s the same island as one?
je ne sais pas
Grifting and looking for handouts?
Jamaica too? Let me guess – everyone that lives south of us and has darker skin – regardless of the language they speak?
Jamaica at one point was ruled by Spain
NOW DO AAPI
Why isn’t Quebec listed?
Yeah bad geography there. The list should be called “Latin American and Caribbean”. Also who the fuck would move to Jamaica or Haiti that is not an embassy official living behind walls with guards?
Well, if you are looking for cheap digs, it might qualify!
French (and Portuguese) and Latin languages.
But, as mentioned, Jamaica makes no sense. And by my standard above, Quebec fits.
If Yahoo News says they it’s a Latin American country, then it must be true. If you can’t trust Yahoo, who can you trust?
Its been a while since I posted one of these.
Boy, is MikeS gonna be conflicted.
Damn your nimble fingers!
Just like Alex Lifeson!
Genuine lol.
That girl has nimble fingers.
I got to eat dead cow, tho.
I wonder if MikeS will be able to handle today’s music link. No vocals and a pretty woman on guitar so… maybe? 🤷♂️
Steak and Blowjob Day is only a month away.
After three years spent in a number of LatAm countries I would absolutely consider several of them to live in. Mexico has a number of great places and the proximity to the US in its favor, as well as awesome food. Panama, Ecuador and Chile are also very attractive options if you don’t mind going further south, all very different from each other. If you aren’t living in a big city those are all pretty safe, especially when comparing to the US.
Colombia is pretty darn nice as well.
Headed back down to Nayarit later this year.
I could definitely live there.
Nice! Maybe we will be neighbors. Do you guys rent a house? I haven’t been to that area but I hear it’s fantastic. and it’s on my list. We usually end up in the same general area on the Baja coast between La Paz and Cabo San Jose. More goats than people on the beach there. A customer of mine highly recommends San Francisco, just north of Sayulita as a great little village to stay in.
Yeah, we went down there once before. We rent a house in a gorgeous development right near a wonderful little fishing village.
After a bunch of trips to Turks, we’re going back.
¡Que bueno! Have a great trip, that sounds fantastic.
You came home with a brand new plan?
You take the seed from Columbia and Mexico?

I am happy that Salsa Huichol is available on grocery store shelves here now.
Port-au-Prince would indeed qualify in that respect!
That last one was meant for above. Huichol is good stuff. Also Yucateco makes a number of great hot sauces if you see them.
We’ve started thinking about another trip to Panama, and maybe add on Uruguay. I enjoyed Panama – really nice people, gorgeous countryside, dial in your preferred micro-climate. We were mostly up around Boquete. Still a little too second-world for Mrs. Dean to relocate to, but it’s been awhile.
One of the reasons I am larnin’ Spanish is for just-in-case things start looking worse here than there.
You’re not considering anywhere in Mexico? Absolutely get up on the Spanish if you think it’s a real possibility. Yes, in a gringo enclave you can likely get by without, but it will make living there way easier and better the more you can speak.
Not really. A little too leftist-failed-state for me.
That kind of describes them all south of the border (with the exception of Chile and Uruguay, although Chile is working on that). Mexico has very low property taxes. If you happen to have to return to the US sometimes don’t discount the pain in the ass 16 hour plus flight from Montevideo.
Some relatives of mine lived in Ecuador for a while. I visited them while they were there.
It wasn’t bad. My relatives enjoyed their time there, but decided to head back to the States as certain things important to them were much easier in the US.
“The BBC’s Nomia Iqbal and Mariana Sanches explain how the leaders and their nations compare at this critical moment.”
No.
Biden and Lula both seem to hate the U.S. They both are doing their best to get more countries to join BRICS.
It was the second round talks with the communist-inspired National Liberation Army, known as ELN, in negotiations launched in November shortly after President Gustavo Petro was elected as Colombia’s first leftist president. The first three weeks of talks in Venezulea’s capital yielded only modest results.
Communists do many inspirational things.
Just finished The White Pill. Confirmed.
That we allow negotiating with communists proves we are no longer a serious country.

All those cities along the river get what they voted for?
Should have read the ballot more carefully.
I’ve seen that “Ohio River Watershed” map in other tweets. Unless poisoned water now runs uphill, it’s pretty much the area right along the Ohio that is fucked. I’d like to see a map of prevailing winds showing where the airborne toxins are going to settle.
Tuff gai.
I’d like to see him say that to a “yokel” in person.
What an odd endorsement of Trump
Rolling Stone’s Asawin Suebsaeng and Patrick Reis write that Trump has been regularly asking those around him, “What do you think of firing squads?”
Promise to put Mr. ENB on the scaffold and you’ve got my vote, Mr. President.

I think I’ve seen it. About an anti-drug task force in Brazil, if memory serves. Blanking on the name. So, more a cartel guy than a commie taking the big drop.
The BEAMster has it. I also watched that (really good, BTW), and got my South American narco shows crossed up.
Colombia.
It’s the chase for Escobar. But the main actors and producer are Brazilians.
Buttplug is trending on Twitter. Something I never thought I’d see.
Because he’s the Secretary of Transportation?
I was afraid to click, but that’s probably it.
The thing is, I think they were planning to move Buttigieg up to VP or otherwise make him a national candidate of some kind, and put him in Transportation so he could claim Cabinet experience, but in a nice, sleepy backwater agency where nothing controversial would happen.
So, that didn’t work out. Among other things, probably the biggest environmental disaster in a long time happens on his watch, and he’s giving speeches about how there are too many white guys working construction. Anybody who cared could tell he was a lightweight, but man, has he been exposed.
This generation’s Neil Goldschmidt.
Maybe it’s a local thing, but I haven’t seen a white construction worker in a couple decades at least.
I actually had one in my house today, repairing some plaster. The other crew that comes by – roof repairs, exterior maintenance, well, we’ll just say they hablan espanol. As does the interior painter.
“In just a simple swimsuit, in temperatures of 2.2 Celsius, with no protective clothing or grease, Barbara made the 45 minutes and 50 second swim, pushing through the icy waves in Chile Bay, Greenwich Island in the Antarctic Peninsula.”
How did she not freeze to death?
“Antarctica and its surrounding ocean and wildlife that live there are coming under increasing pressure from the climate crisis. ”
Oh, fuck off.
LOL because of course that lie is relevant.
Why Antarctica becoming a marginally less hostile environment is bad for wildlife is an exercise for the reader, I suppose.
*Wim Hof smiles knowingly*
Ha! That was my first thought too. Maybe she took his course.
Maybe she’s fat.
Global warming, duh!

Ford Motor has paused production and shipments of its electric F-150 Lightning pickup due to a potential battery issue, the company said Tuesday.
Ford spokeswoman Emma Bergg declined to disclose details of the possible battery issue, which is being investigated after a vehicle displayed a potential problem as part of the automaker’s pre-delivery quality inspections.
The stop-shipment order and halt in production was issued at the beginning of last week, according to Bergg. It adds to ongoing “execution issues” detailed to investors earlier this month by Ford CEO Jim Farley that crippled the automaker’s fourth-quarter earnings.
Shares of Ford were down about 1% in midafternoon trading Tuesday. The stock was trading for under $13 a share.
Ford has not established a timeline for when production and the shipments will resume, according to Bergg.
“The team is diligently working on the root cause analysis,” she said, adding the company is “doing the right thing by our customers” to resolve any potential issues before resuming production and shipments.
“It’s crap.”
F150 Scottish Edition?
I highly doubt that they’re gonna say “Electric cars are shit and until science can overcome the technological reasons why they’re shit, they’re gonna be shit.”
And batteries blow up.
(I sure as fuck hope no lowlife in my building has an arsenal of these things that he is “repairing”.)
I chuckled at Ford’s use of Toyota lingo (“root cause analysis”).
Everyone is Toyota now
Former President Jair Bolsonaro said Saturday he intends to return to Brazil “in the following weeks.”
Raising (not begging, dammit) the question: does he get greeted like Bonaparte, or like Benigno Aquino?
It also makes me wonder if State denied his visa request….
Kids these days are ignorant.
Next will be the suspect couldn’t start the car because there was no start button on the dash.

Seconded. Nice bike. I really dig the 1000s from that era.

The European Parliament on Tuesday formally approved a law to effectively ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the European Union from 2035, aiming to speed up the switch to electric vehicles and combat climate change.
The landmark rules will require that by 2035 carmakers must achieve a 100% cut in CO2 emissions from new cars sold, which would make it impossible to sell new fossil fuel-powered vehicles in the 27-country bloc.
The law will also set a 55% cut in CO2 emissions for new cars sold from 2030 versus 2021 levels, much higher than the existing target of a 37.5%.
“The operating costs of an electric vehicle are already lower than the operating costs of a vehicle with an internal combustion engine,” Jan Huitema, the parliament’s lead negotiator on the rules, said, adding that it was crucial to bring more affordable electric vehicles to consumers.

Given that my V-day conundrum has been rendered moot, I’ll drop by.
I’m going dancing.
Note to self: stop watching idiots in cars and vehicle repair videos on youtube.
Idiots in cars is oddly cathartic.
Having almost gotten taken out by a bicyclist today running a light I especially enjoy cyclists going down when they don’t obey traffic laws.
One ton pulling a trailer decided red doesn’t mean stop this morning and kept turning in front of me. Luckily no contact, just brakes and horn.
Idiots in cars and instant karma videos are the best!
I’m off the wife to enjoy the crooning of Edwin McCain.

At least tell me that you were a gentleman today like Tom Brady.

Combating Disinformation Wanes at Social Media Giants
As the companies have shed jobs recently, many teams assigned to combat false and misleading information have taken a hit.
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/14/technology/disinformation-moderation-social-media.html
The narrative must be protected.
LOL
“many teams assigned to combat false and misleading information are useless baggage“
Last month, the company, owned by Google, quietly reduced its small team of policy experts in charge of handling misinformation, according to three people with knowledge of the decision. The cuts, part of the reduction of 12,000 employees by Google’s parent company, Alphabet, left only one person in charge of misinformation policy worldwide, one of the people said.
The cuts reflect a trend across the industry that threatens to undo many of the safeguards that social media platforms put in place in recent years to ban or tamp down on disinformation — like false claims about the Covid-19 pandemic, the Russian war in Ukraine or the integrity of elections around the world. Twitter, under its new owner, Elon Musk, has slashed its staff, while Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has shifted its focus and resources to the immersive world of the metaverse.
Faced with economic headwinds and political and legal pressure, the social media giants have shown signs that fighting false information online is no longer as high a priority, raising fears among experts who track the issue that it will further erode trust online.
Well, that’s it. Those of us who survived Net Neutrality, the last government shutdown, and being unvaccinated, are now going to die.
It’s really hard to see how they generate any revenue by reducing content and therefor traffic, so, yeah, when things tighten up . . . .

👍
I replaced my own dishwasher a few years back.
My wife was not that impressed.
Much like replacing the coupler and agitator dogs in the washing machine (though she did recently ask me “what was that thing you replaced in the washing machine?”, so she may have been bragging about me a bit).
I was specifically told to, and I quote, “save your back” so with that being said, they did a good job.
