Saturday evening, I’m back! links

Howdy.

So here we are again. OMWC seems to have made it to his destination. Let’s see if anything has happened since last night, shall we?

This story is just infuriating.

People who turned their dogs into vicious animals need to be caned in the public square.

Oh look. They built a city for MS-13. I’m sure there won’t be any problems.

And they will learn nothing.

I’ve noticed in the past couple of weeks that this seems to be a growing trend. Time to restock my supply of proggy tears.

Okay, the news cycle still sucks.

We had coffee with Chet Atkins, let’s slide into cocktail hour with Joe Pass.

    *grumble about taxes*

$1,700 by the end of March? I was planning to use that money to get out of debt this month! Someone burn down the city again.

      • UnCivilServant

The silly part is, in May I’ll get $560ish from the state for paying the city. Couldn’t the city just charge me less?

    • UnCivilServant

I did notice a difference between how the City and the School District communicated.

The City was businesslike. The School District was snotty, confrontational, and entitled in tone. Makes me want to cause them financial damage instead.

      • Threedoor

        Yes.

Oh look. They built a city for MS-13.

Did they build it on rock and roll?

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Damnit Ted, you know this is a Jefferson Starship free zone. Jefferson Airplane is acceptable though.

Things what make you say “Huh”

The house where four University of Idaho students were stabbed to death in November will be demolished, school officials said Friday.

The owner of the home in Moscow offered to give it to the university and the school accepted, University President Scott Green said in a memo to students and employees.

“This is a healing step and removes the physical structure where the crime that shook our community was committed,” Green wrote.

No timeline has set for the demolition, but university spokesperson Jodi Walker told the Idaho Statesman that the goal is to have the house knocked down by the end of the semester.

The Lord commands you to smite the evil place!

What the fuck do you do with it if you’re the owner? I don’t know, but this snake-handler level fetishization of inanimate objects needs to stop.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

It is stupid and where’s the line drawn? Why not demolish the whole town? Just call the carpet cleaners and a maid service and get some new tenants in there for god’s sake.

    • creech

Did they tear down Ford’s Theater? Or that synagogue?

      • Chafed

No because the owners of those properties have some sense. The university president needs to be fired.

      • Gustave Lytton

The fucking former football coach is and probably always will be the highest paid state pension retiree. $500k/year for forever.

      • Threedoor

$2,700,000 each year of his five year contract.
WSU is in debt around $40 million.

The college will take every opportunity to expand.

    • Gustave Lytton

And student housing costs go up, even if ever so slightly.

  6. The Late P Brooks

Walker also said the university is working with students and other community members to create a plan for the property’s future development that would honor the slain students: seniors Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves, both 21, junior Xana Kernodle, 20, and freshman Ethan Chapin, 20.

““There is no justification for shooting an unarmed man in the back,” Hunley told the judge.”

I can think of a few.

And yes, this story is infuriating. Dude is going to be railroaded.

    • UnCivilServant

First thing that comes to mind is said ‘unarmed’ man is strangling someone. It gets less common from there.

    • rhywun

I saw a lot mixed up details in there. The defense seems to be implying that someone else shot the victim? It seems like that should be pretty easy to disprove. Also their claim that the illegals were armed.

      • Chafed

I agree. I don’t have a clear understanding of what happened from either side. I assume this is more terrible reporting.

    • Lackadaisical

What is so infuriating about it? Honestly I’m not convinced this was a lawful use of force.

      • Spudalicious

This guy wasn’t with the group he shot at, when he shot at them. And if someone in tactical gear with an AK is on my property and points it at me? He gets three in the body. He was probably afraid to shoot at them, because they would have come back and killed him and his wife.

      • Zwak, my pronouns are Ass/Asshole

If someone is breaking into my house, the only thing they are trying to do is kill me and rape my wife. How do I know that? I don’t read minds, so I need to assume the worse. Fuck all of these DA shits who try to claim someone clearly breaking the law is not at fault. If I am at fault for all damages resulting from my driving drunk, you are responsible for all damages committed during the course of a crime.

        Trespassing = crime.

In too-local news, this is not my Y, but it’s part of the same area org. If this crap spreads to the one I visit, I’m going to be pissed. (Last I heard, the Y claimed they were following state law.) Soooo tiresome.

    • Mojeaux

      Ugh. I’d be livid.

FTA: “Under no circumstance will we investigate an individual’s birth identity and then assign individuals to locker rooms. That would be counter to the law, counter to respect for all people and it is not who or what we are as an organization,” a statement from YMCA read. [Emphasis added.]

They’re not respecting the women who called the police saying there was a man in the women’s locker room.

      • Mojeaux

So angry. Color me TERF because this shit is going to turn me into a radical feminist.

      • rhywun

They’re not respecting the women who called the police saying there was a man in the women’s locker room.

    From ABC:

Christian Alexander Moreno, 31, was later arrested in connection with the attack and is facing a charge of attack by dangerous dog causes death and a charge of injury to an elderly, both felonies, police said. ABC News was unable to reach Moreno for comment.

Beat that motherfucker to death with an axe handle and bury him in the same ditch as his fucking dogs.

    • Sean

      Spicy take.

      • Chafed

I’m with Brooks. Before Moe’s death, I spent a minimum of 2 days per week at our local dog park for 12 years. I had never met a pitbull before going to the park. The first time I saw one I thought the owner was reckless for bringing him to the park.

I quickly learned how much those dogs are sweet unless abused or mistreated by their owners. The capper to my story is Moe met his “girlfriend”, Pussycat, at the park She was a Staffordshire Terrier.

      • Threedoor

I had never met one prior to being in the army. Their owners matched them. Totally civilized with no signs of methamphetamine use.

  11. Mojeaux

I’m watching The Devil’s Hour because Peter Capaldi. *waves hi to GT* Wonderful weird psychological thrillers like The Sinner season 1. Freaky deaky.

    • Gender Traitor

I will say that Capaldi was excellent in his featured role in Torchwood: Children of Earth, and I was happy with the way they wrapped up the River Song story arc (if that’s the proper shape to describe it) during his DW tenure. He’s not the worst, but neither is he the best Doctor.

      • Raven Nation

“but neither is he the best Doctor.”

        Tom Baker, right?

      • Raven Nation

Although I have a soft spot for Patrick Troughton.

      • UnCivilServant

I’ve seen some great stuff from his time, but so much of it just isn’t there to be watched anymore 🙁

      • Sean

        *offers Jelly baby*

      • Threedoor

He’s the Dr that made me quit the BBC

      • Mojeaux

        Baker or Capaldi?

      • Threedoor

Capaldi. Great actor. Terrible roll and writing for him.

      • Mojeaux

I’ll give you the sloppy writing, but he was still my favorite NuWho (never watched OldWho).

      • Threedoor

I watched the old Who as a kid on PBS, usually home sick or late at night. It was played in random order and made no sense. But it wasent Lawrence Welk or a game show.

      • Zwak, my pronouns are Ass/Asshole

Trick question; there is no “good Dorktor.”

  12. Mojeaux

I don’t like dogs, but I’d take that goofy pupper home and spoil him.

    • rhywun

I was wondering where is the rest of his head? Must be a trick of the camera.

  13. The Late P Brooks

FTA: “Under no circumstance will we investigate an individual’s birth identity and then assign individuals to locker rooms. That would be counter to the law, counter to respect for all people and it is not who or what we are as an organization,” a statement from YMCA read. [Emphasis added.]

Don’t worry. The hundreds of millions of gender dysphorics in this country will keep your organization afloat after the sane people leave.

    • hayeksplosives

Bally Fitness was started as a women-only gym to allow a place for women to exercise without being ogled (at least not by men).

Are they going to be forced to accept men who are still sporting full wedding tackle?

      • hayeksplosives

Nevermind; I see that Bally went under.

      • Chafed

        Problem solved!

        Heh heh, Bally.

  14. Q Continuum

“People who turned their dogs into vicious animals need to be caned in the public square.”

I’m likely going to get pilloried for saying this here but here goes: while I agree that in many cases, these incidents are due to shitty owners, I’ve seen/known of far too many situations in which a dog turns vicious and bites in spite of the owners taking good care of them and “never hurting a fly”. To that end, I support breed-specific bans and one-strike euthanization; you bite a human bad enough to draw blood once and it’s not explicitly a defensive situation: euthanized. You bite a kid under any circumstances: euthanized. Dogs, unlike guns, do have (instinctual) agency and can be violent without any previous history or warning.

    • Spudalicious

I mentioned this in another discussion on the subject. With some breeds, the owner needs to train them to control ingrained behaviors.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Yeah, a pit bull that draws blood and a skittish Irish Setter that nips someone’s hand aren’t even in the same ballpark.

    • Mojeaux

Co-sign everything but breed-specific bans. I see that as punishing someone for something they haven’t done yet.

    • whiz

I’m not sure about the breed-specific part, but we did have to put down a foster fail after 18 months when she bit me once, with me ending up with stitches. Her personality was changing and we think she might have had a tumor.

      • DrOtto

Only time I was ever seriously bit by a dog was a customer’s dog that ended up having to be euthanized due to a tumor. He worked his way past the owner and just attacked me without ever making a sound. It was bizarre.

      • Chafed

        That’s sad for everyone involved.

    • Ted S.

What if the dog has big tits?

      • Zwak, my pronouns are Ass/Asshole

Teets, Teds. They are called teets.

      • Aloysious

        Yeah, what Zwak said.

        You NAME the dog ‘Tits’.

        Zany hijinks ensue.

      • Chafed

This debate is about to get interesting.

    • R C Dean

Shotguns at 5 paces on breed specific bans. I know the breed at the top of the list, I’ve had them for 30 years. No. Fucking. Way.

Dogs can be provoked in ways that aren’t self-defense, but fall into the “the dumbass shoulda known better” box so punishing the dog because some dumbass FAFOed is wrong.

      • Chafed

        I’ll be your second.

      • Brochettaward

As RC Dean has been pointing out lately, language has consequences. And you people? You continuously employ hateful, bigoted terminology against my kind.

      • Aloysious

No no no, Bruschetta. Everybody likes toast-people

      • Chafed

It’s sad that a historically literate man, and former member of the military, doesn’t value the second.

  15. The Late P Brooks

    one-strike euthanization

    Absolutely.

    • Sean

      Shocked, I am.

    • The Last American Hero

They already spend most of the night polishing the brass, now they have to do paint repair as well?

It’s almost like there is some sort of trend here and it started before cOvId.

      • Chafed

But school choice is out of the question.

    • Threedoor

      Quit feeding them bread.

  16. Grumbletarian

Until tonight I had never seen a goalie score a goal in an NHL game. Linus Ullmark did it for the Bruins tonight.

    • Raven Nation

Only 13th goalie to score. I knew it was unusual but didn’t know it was that rare.

    • Chafed

I know nothing about hockey. How did the goalie score? It seems impossible if even one opposing player is on the ice.

      • Grumbletarian

I should add that you pull the goalie in order to put another player on offense out, so you can try to tie the game late.

      • Chafed

        Thanks. That’s pretty wild.

      • Threedoor

        It’s played on ice.

    • Tundra

It was awesome! I’ve seen it but it’s really rare

      • Raven Nation

Playoffs even rarer I think. Pretty sure Brodeur has one.

    • dontreadonme

Pekka Rinne did it for the Preds against the Hawks 3 years ago….an alioop from behind his net into an open net. Pretty cool. Not sure if a goalie has ever scored on a defended goal. That would be pretty near impossible.

  17. Gustave Lytton

Continued from the past thread: I never cleaned out my desk at work from taking over from predecessor. Never used the drawers in five years. Finally got rid of stuff on the bookshelves I’ve never used.

    • dontreadonme

So the bourbon in the bottom drawer is probably still good, but I would toss the condoms at this point.

      • Gustave Lytton

I have opened it and not alcohol or prophylactics. Just years of office detritus. At some point I’ll need to clean it out lest my successor assumes it’s mine. Once I leave I bet I won’t care though.

      • R.J.

        Red stapler?

      • Gustave Lytton

I’m taking that with me. Gift from a now retired buddy.

      • Sean

My friends yesterday were talking about retirement.

The last dinner I had with different freinds, we were talking about doctors/dentists.

I may have entered a demographic I’m not ready for yet.

    • Gustave Lytton

Speaking of time slipping away. Noticed the won’t sell alcohol if born after todays date in 2002 at the grocery store today. Started thinking about how many current things in my life are before that point.

      • Threedoor

It’s the people I know with grandkids.

Mine just turned five and the other turns one next week.

      • Gustave Lytton

I don’t have any but was thinking about how old the kids would be for the girls that got pregnant in HS school. Or how many generations there are now.

      • NoDakMat

I happened to spot one of those on September 11th last year and it struck me that every person that was alive on September 11, 2001 was now old enough to buy alcohol legally only a few months after we “ended” the invasion that was inspired by some people doing things on that day.

  18. Gustave Lytton

I wonder how many people are going to tear down their dilbert clippings Monday. Or file a complaint with HR for a coworker not taking theirs down.

    • Threedoor

      So dumb.

      • hayeksplosives

I ain’t throwing out my mini-book of Alice the Engineer.

    • Brochettaward

I’d like to see his full quotes in context, because they do look pretty bad in the report I read.

But I’ve said it on here. Blacks are the most racist group in the country by far and it isn’t just aimed at white people as the Asian hate crimes show. Or the attacks on Jews that pop up from time to time. Or, hell, talk to any Hispanic who spent significant time in a military unit that was predominately black…

  19. hayeksplosives

Ahhhh… finally in bed, binge watching Forensic Files while hoping never to feature on the show myself.

Hard no on breed-specific bans. There is literally no safetyist anti-gun argument that couldn’t (and wouldn’t) be used against dogs. CA would have a “safe breed” registry, and would only allow puppies to be born at site-approved breeders certified not to be including any mean dogs in their bloodlines.

    • Sean

And mandatory trainings! For owners and dogs.

      • hayeksplosives

And the trainers have to have a state-issued license that requires 1000 hours of state-approved training and a renewal fee of $1500 per year.
