IFLA: The “I Still Like Snow” Edition of the Horoscope for the Week of March 12

by | Mar 12, 2023 | IFLA | 71 comments

Fresh snow makes a nice soft bed

This week?  Kind of boring.  A very brief flare-up of anger Sunday night (check your local time zone), and some domestic crisistunity Friday and Saturday.  The planets are all kind of hanging out in one half of the sky, but it’s not enough to make it tip over.  Any overall scheme of things seems to favor the lower socioeconomic classes, which is kind of weird for such a luxury SCIENCE!

The deck feels kind of light. I assume tarot gnomes have stolen some cards.

Pisces: Queen of Coins reversed –  Evil, suspicion, suspense, fear, mistrust.

Aries: 7 of Coins reversed – Cause for anxiety regarding money especially regarding lending.

Taurus: 5 of Cups – Loss, but something remains; inheritance, patrimony, transmission, but not corresponding to expectations.

Gemini: Ace of Wands – Creation, invention, enterprise, principle, beginning, source; birth, family, origin.

Cancer: The Emperor – Stability, power, protection, realization; a great person; aid, reason, conviction; also authority and will.

Leo: Queen of Wands reversed – Good, economical, obliging, serviceable.

Virgo: Page of Cups – A studious youth; news, message; application, reflection, meditation.

Libra: 8 of Cups – Joy, mildness, timidity, honor, the decline of a matter, or that a matter which has been thought to be important is really of slight consequence.

Scorpio: 5 of Coins reversed – Disorder, chaos, ruin, discord, profligacy.

Sagittarius: 3 of Coins – Métier, trade, skilled labor, nobility, aristocracy, renown, glory.

It’s really not fair when Lily and Queenie team up.

Taurus: 5 of Cups – Loss, but something remains; inheritance, patrimony, transmission, but not corresponding to expectations.

I see that these words are English.

what? it’s been a great week….onward and upward! – Sidney Powell

    • Not Adahn

So, go find a picture of the 5 of Cups, like so: https://i.pinimg.com/736x/b3/69/a5/b369a5fb839c2c994597c14a4f57cabf.jpg

The background is a pretty nice place: it’s settled, there’s a bridge over the river, the hills are green.

The foreground is someone shrouded in black with their head bowed, looking at three spilled cups. There are two full ones behind them.

So we have someone who does have possessions, but not all of them. The focus is on the loss. The card is about a non-total loss, or a gain but in a mixed-blessing sense. As in “congratulations, you just got a house! Because a loved one died and left it to you!”

      • The Hyperbole

Those cups don’t appear to be full, could be empty, at best half-ish full.

      • Not Adahn

These are euro-cups, they’ve got a fill line inside.

The deck feels kind of light. I assume tarot gnomes have stolen some cards.

Not enough cards to draw for Capricorn or Aquarius? 😉

“Cancer: The Emperor – Stability, power, protection, realization; a great person; aid, reason, conviction; also authority and will.”

Which is better – to be the Boss, or to be the Boss’ number one button man?

Sagittarius: 3 of Coins – Métier, trade, skilled labor, nobility, aristocracy, renown, glory.

This is the week I should pitch my perpetual motion machine to the suckers venture capitalists?

    • Not Adahn

They need a safe place to park their money now!

  5. Q Continuum

Slutty Sunday officially requests a one-day suspension of the 30 minute rule due to the extra-chromosome level stupidity of DST.

    https://archive.ph/lX3o2

Rant: DST is the most tangible and obvious example of the dysfunction inherent in our system. Large majorities (approaching 85% in some studies) of the population despise the clock-shifting, there are measurable detriments and no measurable benefits, yet we still can’t seem to get rid of it. Greenies think we can “SAYV THUH URTH” but we can’t even fix a pointless exercise in shifting clocks that nearly everyone hates. As far as I’m concerned it’s just another example of government sadists fucking with your life for fun.

    • RBS

At least the clock in my truck is right again.

    • The Hyperbole

      measurable detriments?

      • Q Continuum

If you like, I’ll arse myself to dig up the references but off the top of my head:
        – Loss of economic activity due to mismatched clocks
        – F-ed up circadian rhythms resulting in a measurable increase in cardiovascular events in the days after the shift
        – Increased traffic accidents

I should clarify that I’m not advocating for DST vs. Standard; there are advantages and disadvantages between them both that come out in the wash. I’m advocating against the act of shifting itself. Just pick something and stick with it; people will adapt.

    Actual journalism? From NPR?

“Sextortion is a very real issue. And it can cause unimaginable harm to individuals, to families,” says Albright, who has done anti-trafficking training for the Justice Department and other law enforcement organizations. “I think we’ve learned this kind of the hard way in the trafficking world — to go down the path of fearmongering and sensationalism is actually harmful.”

She says she spends most of her time in training sessions getting investigators to unlearn inaccurate things they’ve been taught previously.

The idea that sexual exploitation of children is rampant in places like the United States is a key theme for people who profit off conspiracy theories. Such narratives have become a growing problem for those working in related fields, including NCMEC.

Debunking a movie sensationalizing “sextortion”. What are they trying to hide?

    Gemini: Ace of Wands –

    Creation, invention, enterprise, principle
Glass half full: “Things are looking good!”

    beginning, source; birth, family, origin
Glass half empty: “Son, what was that phone call from your GF about?”

  9. Fourscore

    Bring Lily!

12 inches of fresh snow yesterday/today. Finally over but more coming this week. I’ll have to quit early today, DST is saving me an hour of daylight.

Truck clock will be right as RBS says. I didn’t want to clear snow again, thought I could drive through any additional, I was wrong and another 6 inches on deck for mid-week. Sure looks purty outside though.

    • Not Adahn

We’re supposedly going to get another foot/18″ tomorrow night. The BIL is coming to visit Thursday. Hopefully we’ll get a quarter inch or more on Wednesday to pretty things up.

    • Animal

We’ve actually been getting some melting up in the Great Land. Cold this week (highs in the twenties) but after Friday it looks like we’re in for a prolonged warming spell. Roofs will dump, the drive will melt clear, the piles of moose poop around the parking area will thaw so I can clear them away. Spring is coming!

    • DEG

A nor’easter is supposed to hit here late Monday night into Wednesday. 8-12″ predicted.

      I hate snow.

I’m wondering if “country ham,” “side meat,” or “self-rising flour” are things in Europe.

  11. Scruffyy Nerfherder

    I guess Capricorns are doomed.

    • Not Adahn

Yeah, I thought something was wrong.

Last week at work was insane. Started a complete shitshow, turned into the kind of chaos that results when you see a solution and drop all the other projects (pissing off the people wanting those done) tom implement it. Saved the company $300k single-handedly, but still a lot of people are pissed.

    Queenie is so beautiful!

Leo: Queen of Wands reversed – Good, economical, obliging, serviceable.

Not sure what that means, but at least it isn’t doom.

    • Not Adahn

Yeah, she is one of the best-formed GSDs I’ve ever seen.

      • Tundra

She reminds me of mine. Fairly square, lean, normal head. Some of the breeders are doing horrible things again.

  14. Not Adahn

Roast beef for lunch. Great day to be using the oven.

Not Adahn, that Bardwell Farm cheese you posted about a while ago: I got a wheel. It is delicious. Thanks!

    • Not Adahn

I’m so glad you like it. I’m almost halfway through my wheel.

I discovered wonderful things from recommendations here — Asher’s candy and salsa negra from this place come to mind. https://www.villamexicocafe.us/

      • DEG

        Ooo… that looks good.

  16. The Late P Brooks

    Thumbs were sucked

An unexpected rainstorm. A traffic jam on your morning commute. Realizing you forget to put on deodorant.

There are many things that can turn your day from good to bad. But there is one thing you’re probably not thinking about.

    Being called “ma’am.”

I was completely unaware of how much women were outraged by this word until it started getting directed at me as I hit my mid-20s. Like the first time you aren’t carded at the bar, I remember being called “ma’am” by a waiter and realizing, “Yes, he is talking to me.” As someone from Seattle, this term sounded foreign and out of place. It was like society had decided without my permission that my youth was behind me.

It’s an identity shift when you realize people look at you and no longer see a young person. I’m no longer that innocent kid who plays soccer, enjoys summer off and is told “the world is your oyster.” Now, I work the daily grind, get back pain and look forward to a night in watching documentaries.

    Grow the fuck up.

    • CPRM

When I was a teenager someone in a store said to me, ‘Excuse me ma’am, could you help me?’ granted, I had shoulder length hair, but also I giant sideburns. I should have punched that little old lady.

And Also I thought being called ma’am was a goodthink these days.

    • Scruffyy Nerfherder

It was like society had decided without my permission that my youth was behind me.

There it is. The denial of reality and the completely narcissistic worldview.

The reality is that she is still emotionally a child in an adult body, along with millions of others who are about to receive some very difficult lessons.

      • Fourscore

You ain’t seen nuthin’, Ma’am, it’s all downhill and the incline gets steeper.

    • Scruffyy Nerfherder

In fact, men mention some familiar reasons for being alarmed by the term.

“For me, it’s way too formal and I feel like it makes me feel old when someone says that to me. Like I rather someone say ‘hey dude’ or ‘what’s up bro’ than call me ‘sir,’” said one 25-year-old man on Reddit. “It’s my biggest pet peeve.”

Remember when adulthood and maturity were something to strive for? When we wanted the respect that the term brought?

Now they don’t want the responsibility it implies, so they revolt against the honorific. They want to be coddled.

It’s difficult to overstate how much disdain I have for these people.

      • rhywun

It’s difficult to overstate how much disdain I have for these people.

        Seriously.

And this is the same generation that is banning “Ladies and Gentlemen.”

It’s time to fight back, as someone said.

    • Scruffyy Nerfherder

Now, I work the daily grind, get back pain and look forward to a night in watching documentaries.

      She’s what? Thirty?

If you’re a boring, whiny twat, that’s all on you.

  17. The Late P Brooks

It’s hard to navigate terms of respect linked to age, gender and marital status with strangers. Most often people gravitate toward “miss,” “ma’am” and “sir” when working in customer service where there’s a power asymmetry between the speaker and subject.

When communication isn’t face-to-face, such terms become a gauntlet of possible faux pas, from misgendering someone to simply not being able to read their receptiveness.

    No, not misgendering!

    • Animal

The Old Man was pretty strict about these things when I was a kid. I was raised to address people with whom I was not on a first-name basis thusly:

      – Any man older than me was “Sir.”
      – A young woman or girl was “Miss.”
      – An older woman was “Ma’am.”

Oddly there was no protocol for men my age or younger. The Old Man addressed younger guys as “Young man,” normally. With me it was usually “Hey, buddy,” or some such.

      I still follow those protocols.

      • PieInTheSky

Romanian has casual and formal pronouns and I struggle to get the young barista chicks at a local coffee shop to talk to me informally because I dislike formal stuff.

      • LCDR_Fish

Yep – I grew up overseas, but when I started in retail during college (in NC) – default to Ma’am for all women regardless of age and Sir for men (with a few exceptions).

Post military – sir and ma’am are the most convenient defaults for general conversation with new folks. Tends to get compliments and/or “You were military weren’t you?”

      • Gustave Lytton

Wasn’t raised with sir/ma’am, but did call all adults “Mr/Mrs/Miss/(rarely)Ms”. Wasn’t until middle school that had a teacher we addressed by first name. Thanks to the Army, a job with now outdated formalism, and spending time in the south, while I still don’t do it regularly, I do I slip into it easily. Actually as I get older, I find myself using those more and more.

    • rhywun
