NEW – Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot blames her re-election loss on racism and her gender.https://t.co/q6qt8JYy3B

I honestly had no idea that “sewer goblin” was a gender.
Europe pushing for the moon to have its own time zone
With more lunar missions than ever on the horizon, the European Space Agency wants to give the moon its own time zone.
This week, the agency said space organizations around the world are considering how best to keep time on the moon.
The idea came up during a meeting in the Netherlands late last year, with participants agreeing on the urgent need to establish “a common lunar reference time,” said the space agency’s Pietro Giordano, a navigation system engineer.
“A joint international effort is now being launched towards achieving this,” Giordano said in a statement.
For now, a moon mission runs on the time of the country that is operating the spacecraft.
European space officials said an internationally accepted lunar time zone would make it easier for everyone, especially as more countries and even private companies aim for the moon and NASA gets set to send astronauts there.
Maybe go there before you start trying to put it on metric time or whatever the fuck.

Rachel Weisz takes on a Cronenberg classic in the first trailer for Prime Video’s Dead Ringers
Top three things it takes two to do: tango, play tennis, and conduct troubling medical experiments. The first teaser for Prime Video’s new Dead Ringers adaptation is here, and even with only a single line of voiceover to work with, Rachel Weisz eerily commands the camera as both leads, twin OBGYN’s Elliott and Beverly Mantle. (Britne Oldford, Poppy Liu, Michael Chernus, Jennifer Ehle, and Emily Meade round out the cast.)
A modern reboot of David Cronenberg’s 1988 thriller of the same name, Dead Ringers follows the Mantle twins— both doctors—as their blurry sense of boundaries extends from their own relationship into their respective professions. The Mantles care about women’s health and leaving behind antiquated practices in medicine. Unfortunately, that pairs dangerously with the twins’ not-so-sound sense of medical ethics and willingness to do whatever it takes to succeed.
I know taking voluminous liquid shits over old IP is all the rage among the braindead, but this gender swap makes absolutely no sense. The original is about the male sense of body horror when confronted with female biology, leading to a dangerous insanity that drives the twin gynecologist into a murderous folie à deux. How does that even work with female doctors? Are they going to invent Gynaecological Instruments For Operating On Mutant Women or will it just be another curtain lecture about Planned Parenthood?
“I honestly had no idea that “sewer goblin” was a gender.”
It’s one of the 327,984.
Part of me is vaguely curious if anyone has, in fact, claimed such a thing (because you know there are “Sparkly Unicorn” and the like already)… the rest of me remembers Rule 34 and doesn’t want to know.
Better to have 327,984 genders than 23 types of deoderant.
PROOFRAD!

Sugar Free got me with that one. LOL.
I was counting on SF to keep me up to date.

Lunar time? Damn. Another clock on the wall.
Important question: Will there be LST and LDT?
NO
All that wasted sunlight.
Unification. Lunar Standard Daylight Time or LSD Time for everyone pitching the idea….
There will be Lunar Standard Time, and . Dark Side Time.
Can’t they just use UTC?
Clearly they need 23 different time zones, with alternating time zones participating in Lunar Savings Time.
Yeah, not sure why they wouldn’t just use 24 different time zones depending on where they were on the moon. If it’s good enough for earth, it’s good enough for the moon.
That’s what I think. Just use GMT/UTC. The disconnect between the length of days on earth and on the moon makes the reasons for time zones (the sun is overhead at noon) inapplicable to the moon.
I honestly had no idea that “sewer goblin” was a gender.
Maybe it’s a race.
At least an ethnicity.
Like deepwater jew?
The estate of HP Lovecraft would like you to know that Deep Ones are much better than (((deepwater))).
That makes sense, since one of the guys in the runoff is black.
Left unanswered is who voted for her the first time around.
All these newly minted racist misogynists are popping up everywhere.
Well we know it’s obviously not an inditement of her sterling performance record.

Agree with you on “Those who have not set foot on Luna shalt not tell those who have jack over shit”. That said, you’d think they’d need at least 2 time zones — I mean, one half of the thing is going to be pointed towards Sol and the other half isn’t, right? Earthshine only goes so far…
Re: Dead Ringers… never saw the original, don’t care for most remakes. Maybe they’ll extend the gender flip to being lesbian transsexual gynecologists secretly scared of the Cod instead of the Cunte. Who knows.
It gets depressing some days when I realize that there’s almost zero new movies or TV shows I give a crap about for going on a couple of years now. The actual creative people must be seriously clamped down below the money folks and those who want to send their messages, forget if the audience gives a crap.
You need to watch Clarkson’s Farm.
My middle schooler and I are watching it. He’s getting a nice lesson on bureaucracy.
Hollywood has always been full of remakes. Except now there’s this push for reboots and try to throw in a twist rather than just doing a remake with the same story.
Watched The Big Clock day before. I knew about, had the book, but still hadn’t watched it before. No Way Out is pretty good in the number of places they kept the same subplot albeit updated.
I feel like the time window for remakes and reboots has sped up as well. As an example, first there was del Toro’s Hellboy (2004, sequel in 2008). After the third movie got cancelled, it lay barren for about a decade before a reboot (2019 – directed by Neil Marshall with David Harbour as Big Red). That one… did not do well in the theater, or on streaming, or anywhere. There’s already an announced reboot with production supposed to begin this year (Hellboy: The Crooked Man).
At some point people must turn away from the recycling machine. We are already seeing that. Money will dry up and new properties and ideas will emerge. If not we are doomed to endless remakes and lowbrow parodies like “Amityville Karen.”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVDSX7RQbVo
It’s all prequels now. Bates Motel was good, but now we’re getting a prequel for the Friday the 13th series. Are there really people out there wanting to watch that? And how badly are they going to fuck it up based on what’s already been reveled in movies?
Sounds like an article comparing box offices. Hmm….
A prequel to the first one? There already was a reboot of the first Jason movie, and it was very good.
Yes, set at the lake before the killings from the initial press.
There’s been a reboot of Friday the 13th (not bad), Nightmare on Elm Street (I enjoyed it), Child’s Play (AI instead of voodoo curse), Hellraiser (not a fan of the reboot), Poltergeist (solid but unnecessary), and countless others. That’s not even getting into the Amityville, Exorcist, and other reboots/remakes.
@Neph, I actually liked the Hellraiser reboot. They definitely changed the underlying theme of the novella’s “You guys know theres alot of sexual fetishes out there, right?” to the most “Drugs are bad, mkay” theme since Frank Henenlotter’s Brain Damage.
Also, its quite possibly the only movie so far where casting a trans person actually makes sense, especially with the way that “Pinhead” is described in the novella – IIRC, has a tittering feminine voice, and fucks Frank to death with it’s shaved (scandalous at the time!) vagina.
The Nightmare on Elm Street prequel wasn’t bad.
Wouldn’t a Friday the 13th prequel just be a bunch of 18 year olds fucking by a lake while a kid drowns?
The 1934 Paul Muni movie Hi, Nellie got three remakes by 1949.
The Humphrey Bogart Maltese Falcon is the third movie version.
You don’t want to see how many movies called Madame X there are, and how many more are basically the same story but with a different title. Hell, two in that latter class won the Best Actress Oscar: Helen Hayes in The Sin of Madelon Claudet and Olivia De Havilland in To Each His Own.
The Chinese save time and money by just renaming existing films. Before the internet it worked every time!
That video.
*shivers*
Good song, though. Haven’t heard that one forever.
I heard a great idea recently. Instead of remaking good movies, remake ones that looked promising but turned out like crap.
Bad movie mashups: “Ishtar Part 6”
Pootietang the Duck
That made me shudder.
“Peewee’s Big Waterworld”
I’m having trouble coming up with one.
The Truman Show. Cool idea, terrible movie.
I preferred Free Guy
Seconded, that one was surprisingly good.
How about anything with Jim Carey?
It wouldn’t be cancelling him, so to speak…
Free Jack.
There are several if you simply just describe the plot to someone they sound interesting, but the movies made of those stories are, for one reason or another, terrible.
Most of the ones I can think of off the top of my head that I thought I was excited for and turned out like crap ARE remakes, reboots or sequels. I cringe every time I hear any franchise is getting revived now.
I’m going to watch All Quiet on the Western Front this weekend. I’m told it’s as good or better than the original.
But yeah, remakes are generally awful
It’s good, but the actors are British with British accents, even though they are playing Germans. The accent thing threw me a bit.
Do you know who else played a German?
Flea?
John Banner?
Jimmy Stewart in The Mortal Storm?
Madeline Kahn?
Vladimir Putin?

There’s been a couple of articles talking about that. Find the shows/movies that had some nugget inside of brilliance but failed in execution/promotion/etc, and REBOOT THOSE instead of trying the same mediocre attempts over and over.
Look for films that didn’t have the budget or technology to be done right.
We still haven’t gotten a good Cthulhu film. Just saying.

I would also rather re-work obscure but good pieces of cinema that people don’t really have access to anymore.
Example: Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949)
I have it. Another obscure Alec Guinness film is The Lavender Hill Mob which includes an early Audrey Hepburn part.
Yes. The Coen Brothers did an ineffectual remake of The Ladykillers.
Ha! I was thinking of that movie just a couple of days ago. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
So… the last 3 Star Wars movies?

‘deadly strep throat infections’
Really? I mean not saying it can’t kill you, but that’s like saying deadly common cold infections.
In 2020 they were possibly more deadly because doctors were ignoring normal maladies for COVID. I had to kick and scream to have my doc prescribe antibiotics for what was clearly strep for my son while they insisted it was covid.
Doctors are government-approved drug dealers. Do they provide any other benefits?
That wouldn’t surprise me, for a while it was very hard to see a doctor in person. Some cases probably developed into something more serious because they weren’t treated.
A strep infection that entered the blood stream is what nuked my husband’s aortic valve in 2021 for that very reason.

The government’s top Supreme Court lawyer may have saved President Joe Biden’s $400 billion student loan forgiveness plan from what experts considered all but certain defeat.
Experts lobbed praise on Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar, the lawyer who represented the Biden administration in front of the nine justices Tuesday.
“The Biden administration now seems more likely than not to win the cases,” said higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz.
“Her preparation, poise and power were impressive,” Kantrowitz said.
In contrast, the attorneys for plaintiffs opposed to the program were less than stellar, Kantrowitz said. “It was like the difference between a star quarterback and two tiddlywinks players,” he said.
University of Illinois Chicago law professor Steven Schwinn agreed: “Prelogar knocked it out of the park.”
“I do think she could have influenced or even changed the thinking of two justices, maybe more,” he added.
On Wednesday, Fordham law professor Jed Shugerman tweeted that he remains “struck by SG Elizabeth Prelogar’s brilliant performance.”
——-
Prelogar argued that the president was acting squarely within the law to avoid borrower distress during national emergencies and that plaintiffs had not shown in any way that they’d be harmed by the policy, which is typically a requirement to establish so-called legal standing.
Journalists and other advocates see exactly what they were hoping to see.
I’m looking at it all as an attempt to destroy the dollar and the banking system by spending as much money as possible. The administration’s motivations are fundamentally evil and oriented towards establishing a communist money system in the wreckage of default.

Inflation is a right wing myth
The House on Wednesday passed a bill that would require the Biden administration to provide estimates on how “major” executive orders signed by the president would impact inflation, a direct response to the rise in costs over the past year that Republicans have pinned on the White House.
The legislation, titled the Reduce Exacerbated Inflation Negatively Impacting the Nation (REIN IN) Act, passed in a 272-148 vote. Four Republicans — Reps. Andy Biggs (Ariz.), Bob Good (Va.), Matt Rosendale (Mont.) and Chip Roy (Texas) — voted against the measure, while 59 Democrats supported it.
House Republicans brought the measure to the floor roughly two weeks after the Labor Department announced consumer prices increased by 0.5 percent in January and 6.4 percent annually, a higher-than-expected rise. Annual inflation is, however, on the decline from its apex of 9.1 percent in June, which was the highest rate seen in 40 years.
Republicans for months have blamed the Biden administration and Democratic politics for the rise in prices. Since winning the majority in November, the House GOP leaders have made strengthening the economy a core tenet of their agenda.
Biden, however, has pointed to the pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as key factors behind the inflation increase.
We can’t afford not to spend that money!
Again, the point of spending that money is not to win votes. It’s to destroy the dollar.
I’ve come to the conclusion that DC, and the Democrats and agencies in particular, are not working for America anymore.
I’d definitely take a constitutional amendment that Congress can’t use cutesy (stupid) acronyms ever again.
And Congress? You want to rein in the Executive? You have one major power — the purse. Stop. Funding. Them.

People love it so much they are willing for other people to pay for it.

No one wants to go home and find their wife has put a sock on the door.
I’ve come to the conclusion that DC, and the Democrats and agencies in particular, are not working for America anymore.
It all depends on your definition of “america’. The people currently in power believe America= the government and those in close orbit around it.
Seems to me that they’ve been trying to subvert the US banking system to the commies in the ECB. Fortunately, I think they’re failing.
Yeah, I don’t the Fed and the banks want to be the Euro’s buttboys. I believe that part of what we are seeing now is the Fed trying to put the knife in the ECB. The Euro is basically at parity with the dollar, down 25%ish over the last five years. The Fed is winning.
Yeah, we’re very much in favor of destroying Europe’s economy. We’re going commie with or without Europe.
Funny you should say that, that’s Peter Hitchens’ contention.
I have to assume Jamie Dimon doesn’t want to be working directly for the government. That would be a demotion for him.
