“I would write something prescient, maybe even comforting, but you will probably misattribute it to Kipling.”  — C.S. Lewis

I am actually writing this during my company’s all employee call.  So I am multitasking.  !Enlaces!

Chinese companies under US sanctions for Fentanyl production are fighting back!  How?  Denying it, of course.

Woof. That could never happened in the US.  Nope.

These guys need to read a few Michael Malice books.

El Salvador has gone 67 days this year without a homicide.  Except thats a slight mistranslation, this year there were 67 days without a homicide.  Not 67 days in a row.  Which still makes it safer there than Chicago.

While Cuba appears to have run out of other people’s money, El Salvador plans to open another “Bitcoin Embassy” in Texas.  Whatever that means, it implies they already have one built or being built elsewhere.

New York Times wrote pretty much an identical article NPR wrote last week, so I will make the same joke:  El Presidenté Dudebro is a few theatrical executions away from being openly declared the new Pinochet.

Music link today is for purposes of my sanity only.  The CEO is now discussing the company’s DIE initiatives as they relate to Medicare/Medicaid delivery programs, such as the ones offered by my company!

They just need to make it legal. That’s how to fight it.

  2. Count Potato

Interestingly, someone wrote a book about Micheal Malice. “Malice is also the subject of Harvey Pekar’s 2006 biographical graphic novel Ego & Hubris: The Michael Malice Story, illustrated by Gary Dumm”

  3. Count Potato

“Except thats a slight mistranslation, this year there were 67 days without a homicide.”

In El Salvador? Not buying it.

    • The Other Kevin

The first three comments, all on topic. Nice!

      • Count Potato

        Thanks, is your knee better?

      • The Other Kevin

Slightly. Heat seems to help, I took an Epson salt bath yesterday and I’ve been using a heating pad today. Thanks for asking!

      • DEG

Good that your knee is better.

      • Tundra

Seconded. Gotta be healthy for the tourney!

      • The Other Kevin

Not all the way better, still pretty swollen but at least it’s leveled off. I don’t have much feeling from the knee down, so I’m sure I injured it somehow and didn’t notice.

  4. kinnath

I am enjoying the music link. Thanks.

Would you rather hear the answer to the DIE initiatives question?

      • Tundra

        I am morbidly curious.

They hired a DIE coordinator. So my chances of promoting went up a bit.

      • Homple

Of course. For years the cover picture on the annual report from my former employer implied that the purpose of the firm was to put attractive black folks underneath hardhats.

      • UnCivilServant

This isn’t new. Back when I was in college they wanted to take a picture of my Computer Forensics class.

Said class was an elective, and 100% white dudes, so they imported a female student from another major to make it look like there was a token interest.

      • R C Dean

This has been going on a long time. They have even photoshopped POCs into pictures.

On day 2 of 4-6 weeks of training that has shifted my work schedule into one I loved when I was younger. 1000 – 1900 local… right when it’s getting nice enough to bike somewhere for dinner or the like.

I get to be the only person who has no recent experience with the product, so I get to find all the issues in the training documentation, such as using terms that aren’t in use in the system and have been depreciated several releases ago.

Now, children play soccer late into the evening on fields that were gang turf. Ms. Inglés gathers soil for her plants next to an abandoned building that residents say was used for gang killings.
Homicides plunged. Extortion payments imposed by gangs on businesses and residents, once an economy unto itself, also declined, analysts said.
“You can walk freely,” Ms. Inglés said. “So much has changed.”

Well… people respond to incentives. In this case, the gangsters are either doing their thing behind secure walls, or have been incentivized to keep their malicious activities on the down low. Either way, the ordinary Manuel on the street is the beneficiary.

    • rhywun

Or maybe they really are all in prison.

I can’t believe the gangs can carry on their usual activities without murdering each other and terrorizing the innocent – so it has always been.

      • Nephilium

Maybe the government auctioned off the policing rights to the gangs?

      • Zwak tastes the soup, but never counts the beans.

        So, Teachers Union vs. Norteno’s?

  11. DEG

Seen at the gym: On the TV tuned to FoxNews, anti-Ron DeSantis attack ads. “Ron DeSantis has voted to reduce Social Security benefits!” “Ron DeSantis has voted to increase the retirement age to 70!”. It ended with, “Ron DeSantis doesn’t share our values. Ron DeSantis is not ready to be President.”

    • Count Potato

Are either of those things true?

      • rhywun

        I hope so.

DEG left out the best part:

        “Signed, MAGA something or other.”

        It’s a Trump attack ad.

    • mexican sharpshooter

I saw Newsmax on at once point at my gym, but nobody seemed to care.

    • R C Dean

Weird, that the governor of Florida is voting on, well, anything, much less SocSec benefits and the retirement age.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

I think he was a Congressman for 3 terms.

      • DEG

        Yes. He was.

To answer Count Potato’s question, I found this from the Washington Examiner on the ad.

      • Count Potato

So it’s true enough for an ad.

    • Dr. Fronkensteen

When Thomas Paine wrote Agrarian Justice and came up with the idea of an old age pension. He put the age at 50. That made sense in the Late 1700’s.
Now that the life expectancy has gone up (and birth rate has gone down) it makes sense to increase the age of receiving Social Security to make it actuarially sound. But that’s too much to ask of the electorate I guess.

      • kinnath

      • The Bearded Hobbit

I was using the “link” that Monocle provides. Entered my text in the one box and the URL in the next one and hit submit. I got an error, something like “you must enter text for submission”. I then typed a few words and pasted a link (like yours), no problem.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

If I type something (in this case a period) then it takes it fine.

      • kinnath

I type in a phrase. Select it all with the mouse, then hit link. I then paste the url into the center field. Voila!

      • The Bearded Hobbit

That’s what I was trying to do, but got the error. I guess I don’t post that much, anyway.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

Both feature Steve Cash, the 3x gold medal Olympian who is in the Hockey Hall of Fame. He has since retired from being goalie, and has started playing as a skater. This year I played some games against him, including his very first game as a skater and his first goal. For some reason he likes hanging out with us B Team guys. I won’t play him but I’m sure we’ll hang out. (The second article is wrong, he will NOT play goalie).

    • Tundra

He’s a really nice dude. And humble.

I had no idea I was hanging out with a superstar!

      • The Other Kevin

The local Target store has decided to lock up…. aluminum foil:

    https://www.westword.com/news/fentanyl-use-denver-downtown-target-lock-up-aluminum-foil-16548957

“”Blues,” as drug experts call them, have led to a new shoplifting phenomenon at the downtown Target, where fentanyl users will swipe aluminum foil straight from the shelves and freebase the illegal blue pills right there in the middle of the store, according to security guards.”

    • Count Potato

      WTF??

    • Dr. Fronkensteen

While not as good as tin foil, aluminum foil can work in a pinch. That’s why “They” want to lock up the supplies.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

Pretty soon we’ll be going to the old communist shopping experience where all the goods are behind the counter. You point at what you want, get a ticket with the list of items, go pay at the cash register and then go back to the counter to get your goods.

    • Tundra

Are you in Denver, BP? I thought you were in the wilds somewhere!

But let’s get the band together.

Hey, guys, keep me in the loop. Denver is only a day’s drive away and I love 285.

  19. The Late P Brooks

I knew Hawk from the Road Warriors pretty well

I wasn’t into the rasslin like some of my friends were, but I liked those guys, for some reason. Maybe it was the time one of them (no idea who was which) was in the ring, and one of his opponents leaped off the corner post to do one of those flying body slam things, and the guy… caught him. He held him for a few seconds and then dropped him like an empty beer keg. There is no way to fake that kind of strength and athleticism.

I know there are a lot of musicians here. My daughter has a Fender Jazz bass (Mexi) that she wants to tweak to make it easier to play. I don’t know of anyone in the Denver area, so that’s question one. Question two is can you recommend resources so she can do it herself? I’ve adjusted actions, but I feel like she needs more expertise.

    • Count Potato

I never had a Jazz, but I had Precision. Learning how to work on it is a steep learning curve, you need the right tools, and she could make it worse. So I would take it to a shop.

      • Tundra

Thank you. That was my thought, too.

    • hayeksplosives

All I have done is rewire them. I have replaced pickups on some, changed Les Pauls from “50s” wire style to “modern” and back again. etc.

My work is clearly identifiable by the white PTFE (Teflon) Mil-STD wire soldered to MIL specs. It’s kinda pretty, and beats the shit out of the PVC crap they come with.

But yeah, you need a luthier if you’re going to change the body/neck, tension rod, etc.

        See my avatar.

      • Fourscore

Wow! Our Mojeaux, running with the big guys. Break out the champagne, even if Moj doesn’t drink.

And…home. if I take a job that had me traveling often I need to get pre-check cause nothing says safety as paying the government, better luggage, a pair of good shoe to walk/travel…..or just RV it all over the central United States instead.

    • R.J.

Weren’t you in Oklahoma? I thought I had at least one weekend to come by.

      • Ownbestenemy

I was. We crushed the class and ended early and I just enjoyed a do nothing weekend with no dogs, kids, wife….well missed the wife, chores etc.

      • R.J.

Nice. If it happens again, I will take you to some local BBQ. I was right around the corner in DFW. Many friends in OK.

    • Scruffyy Nerfherder

Let’s see if they file a lawsuit against Sig.

If they do not, I think you have your answer.

      • Homple

Sounds to me like excuses from people who mishandled their weapons, but I know nothing about pistols.

      • Scruffyy Nerfherder

Interesting, apparently the P320 does have a history of unintentional discharges, like a teenage boy.

It’s a striker gun, but the pin is under spring pressure at all times which is odd.

I’ve never fired one, so I only know what I read on the internet, so I know it’s all true.

    • Sean

I have one. I haven’t had this problem.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

If you stop commenting here, should we assume you’ve had the problem?

      • The Bearded Hobbit

“When he’s dying he’s not going to carve ‘Arrggggghhh'”

        “Maybe he was dictating?”

    • R C Dean

      Sure it does.

Barring a very serious confirmatory testing regime, my default is “Bullshit”. Being pushed by gun haters and people hoping to score a big settlement.

It’s used by the military (more than one); the testing they put guns through would almost certainly have shaken loose any issues.

      • Homple

Sounds fishy to me. I’ll continue assuming “blaming the pistol for user mishandling”. It does smell like bait for a class action suit. “Cherchez l’avocat” as the French might put it.

    • mexican sharpshooter

Its a well known “defect” that is I believe is overblown. I wrote about it some time ago.
      https://www.glibertarians.com/2021/06/the-heros-journey/

Personally I think its bullshit, even though DOD did figure out how to get it to fire in a drop test, it has to be dropped in a very specific way. It’s extremely unlikely.

If there is any validity to it at all, I am certain the military bought a large enough number of them and has enough retards to find out the hard way.

  23. hayeksplosives

Hey, if anybody is in the mood for a Hayek birthday Zoom, I’d be game!

I don’t know how to host a non-work Zoom though. Do I need a paid account?

If there is interest, can one of you pro-Zoomies do it? Otherwise I will drink my champagne alone.

Or as Mexican Milhouse put it, “Once again, I must sugar my own churro.”

    • Mojeaux

Oh, no, I can’t! I have to work.

      HAPPY BARFDAY!

      • hayeksplosives

Thanks! I will try to keep the Barfing to a minimum.

Unfortunately, the HomeChef delivery was delayed due to Easter and also due to weather. so I got no vittles at home. Might have to try DoorDash.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

So what you are saying is that you will be drinking on an empty stomach.

      • hayeksplosives

Well, I have one Atkins shake, if that counts…

      • Shirley Knott

That’s not food, that’s penance. Much like gluten free bread, which is just nasty 🙁

      • hayeksplosives

I keep ’em around so that if I have no time, at least i have SOMETHING.

But I am actually hungry, and it’s my birthday, dammit!

      • The Bearded Hobbit

Happy birthday, HE. I’ve always felt that ones b-day was a “go for it!” day.

        Savor it.

      • R C Dean

        Fancy!

        I say go for it.

      • slumbrew

        Ohhh, wedge salad. Do it!

      • The Hyperbole

11$ for minimalist salad? I’m in the wrong business.

    • hayeksplosives

I hereby withdraw and cancel my Zoom request.

      See some of yas tomorrow!

      • Dr. Fronkensteen

        Well happy Birthday anyway
