Sunday Morning Daddy Daughter Links

by | May 21, 2023 | Daily Links | 125 comments

Alcohol-related events are my favorite events. I had snagged two seats at the 2022 vintage preview at my favorite winery in Finger Lakes and had planned to take an NPR Lady. A few days before, she called apologetically and told me her kids were coming to town and she’d have to beg off. We made some alternate plans to get together, but still, I had an extra seat. So of course I called the other NPR Lady orbiting Planet OMWC. “Oh, shit that sounds great, but I’m supposed to be in Montreal that day.” Well, fooey. But she helpfully added, “I bet your daughter would like to go…” Nice idea, I asked WebDom and she responded, “Will there be drinking?” “Of course.” “I’m in.”

So she was clearly my third first choice. That’s my story and I’m sticking by it.

Birthdays are a reason to celebrate, and today’s include a guy who made a deep impression; my favorite of all the popes; another one of our local heroes (and if you visit us, check out the museum); a guy who always behaved; possibly the dumbest person ever elected to the senate; a guy who pitied us; a guy who, in a just world, would have been on Food Network; and the next mayor of Buffalo.

On to Links.

Welcome back my friends to the grift that never ends.

WaPo helpfully tells you what to think.

I’d support drawing and quartering of any judge who found the 100 mile CPB zone constitutional in the first place.

These guys descended into parody in, what, maybe 1968? It’s always tough to figure out what to do in the decades after you achieve your goal but the mansions still need to be paid for.

Middle Eastern drama queen culture is always entertaining to outsiders.

The sooner this shit blows up, the better for all of us.

I hate when this guy makes sense. Of course, he was scooped a while back by our beloved Tonio, who coined the term, “Movement Homos.”

Old Guy Music is a live cut from a group that seems to have unaccountably slipped into obscurity. My band covered this song and trust me, it was fun to play. And seriously, if you’re going to do a shredding solo, it ought to be on a Flying V, right?

Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson called herself a “Survivor superfan” on Saturday and offered an audience of graduating law school students lessons from the reality TV show.

The show has been on television for 23 years and is now in its 44th season. Jackson said she has seen every episode since the show’s second season.

“I watch it with my husband and my daughters even now, which I will admit it’s not easy to do with the demands of my day job. But you have to set priorities, people. And that’s exactly the first lesson that I have for you today,” she told the graduating class of American University’s law school in Washington.

I have a slightly different take on the “why” of the escalation from “gay people should be able to marry each other” to “six year olds twerking for dollar bills” in the hopper at Glibs. In a nutshell, wokism is a purity spiral that must necessarily escalate constantly.

Widows and orphans, dying in the street

President Joe Biden said Sunday the GOP’s current stance on debt-ceiling talks was “quite frankly unacceptable” before boarding Air Force One to return to Washington DC, dropping an optimistic tone as negotiations continue to flounder.

“Now it’s time for the other side to move from their extreme positions,” President Biden said during a press conference before his departure from Hiroshima, where he spent recent days meeting with world leaders at a G-7 leaders summit.

    ——-

A key sticking point among many in the talks: spending levels.

The GOP proposal passed in April would cut discretionary spending to 2022 levels and then impose a 1% cap on future increases.

It’s a clear sticking point with McCarthy saying Friday if Democrats “think we’re going to spend more money next year than the year we did this year, that’s not right and that’s not going to happen.”

    Heartless cruelty, it is.

    • Rat on a train

      • UnCivilServant

If it’s not a cap of total spending at 1822 levels with no inflation adjustment, we’re spending too much.

        Cut.

And all spending is discretionary. The legislature can repeal the laws that pretend to bind them to spend funds that the government doesn’t have.

A transgender girl in Mississippi is not participating in her high school graduation ceremony because school officials told her to dress like a boy and a federal judge did not block the officials’ decision, an attorney for the girl’s family said Saturday.

Linda Morris, staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union’s Women’s Rights Project, said the ruling handed down late Friday by U.S. District Judge Taylor McNeel in Gulfport, Mississippi, “is as disappointing as it is absurd.”

“Our client is being shamed and humiliated for explicitly discriminatory reasons, and her family is being denied a once-in-a-lifetime milestone in their daughter’s life,” Morris said. “No one should be forced to miss their graduation because of their gender.”

    The littlest vigilante

A 3-year-old child shot and injured two people in Indiana on Thursday evening, which led to the arrest of a man wanted for murder in Illinois, law enforcement told CNN.

The child got access to a gun and fired one round, striking two people at an apartment in Lafayette, Lafayette Police Department Lt. Justin Hartman told CNN.

Officers responded to a local hospital where the two victims were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries after the shooting, Hartman said. One of the victims is the child’s mother, he added. Police did not say how the child was able to access the gun or what type of weapon was used.

The second shooting victim, identified as 23-year-old Trayshaun Smith, was a friend of the child’s mother who was visiting the apartment, Hartman said. Smith, a resident of Lafayette, was then arrested on an active murder warrant issued out of Cook County, Illinois, the lieutenant said.

    Diversity gap

The absence of women from the slate of potential Morgan Stanley (MS.N) CEO successors underscores the importance of cultivating and keeping diverse talent, corporate governance experts say.

Morgan Stanley co-presidents Ted Pick and Andy Saperstein, and head of investment management Dan Simkowitz, are the front-runners to succeed James Gorman, who said on Friday he plans to step down as chief executive within a year.

The most recent U.S. workforce diversity data comprehensively reported by the Wall Street banks shows women were less represented in leadership positions at Morgan Stanley than at other top U.S. banks as of 2021.

Morgan Stanley said 25% of those holding “executive/senior officials/manager” roles in the U.S. were women, versus 29% for JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N), 36% for Bank of America Corp (BAC.N) and 38% for Citigroup Inc (C.N). Among major peers, only Morgan Stanley’s arch rival Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N) had less female representation, at 23%.

Moreover, 80% of Morgan Stanley’s top leaders in the U.S. were white, more than the others, that reported such representation at between 67% and 78%.

    Needs more quotas.

Yet many parent-friends are nostalgic for time spent together rather than constantly ferrying their kids between things. When the roster of weekend clubs and activities, and weeknight work events, dinner and drinks paused, their marital status ceased being ships in the night and reverted to companionship. It didn’t suit everyone but plenty of couples found they liked it.

      • Zwak , who will swing for the crime, in double time!

Most of these “things” can be easily accomplished if you actually want them more than being a social butterfly type. You want someone to stay at home with the kids? Prioritize that. You want family night? Prioritize that. You want to talk to other moms at a party? Well, you didn’t prioritize your family.

No, you want the gov’t to tell you what is OK. Fuck that noise.

Mary Beth Gallagher, director of engagement for Domini Impact Investments LLC, which invests with environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations, said firms need to have a pipeline of diverse talent if they want to find diverse leaders, which would involve recruiting and career-building efforts.

“The logic is to ensure you have the right people with the skills sets and decision-making authority. You need to have cultivated those leaders,” said Gallagher.

To be sure, Morgan Stanley has several women in top roles, including Chief Financial Officer Sharon Yeshaya. She is one of three women on its 14-member operating committee. There are four women on its 14-member board of directors and four directors who identify themselves as ethnically diverse.

We need to press-gang women into the financial services industry. Letting them decide for themselves what career path to take is unacceptable.
