I hope you’re drinking something good.

  2. Annoyed Nomad

If the shortened version of Steven is Steve, why isn’t the the shortened version of Stephen, Stephe?

    • Pat

My step brother insisted on retaining the H when shortening Thomas. Which only resulted in people pronouncing the “th” sound like “the” just to piss him off.

  3. kinnath

    Back from vacation.

No one ran me off the highway this time.

  4. KK, Non-Man

Why are some Kristens Kristin? That’s the incorrect spelling

    • Annoyed Nomad

I knew a Brittany who looked down upon all Britneys (Britnies?)

    • Ownbestenemy

Why are some Marks Marc? Same questions plague me

      • Sensei

        Usually (((Marc))).

        Similar with (((Jon))) and John.

Rule of thumb and not absolute.

      • Ownbestenemy

I always assumed the legacy or Marcus and really Mars.

      • Gender Traitor

French and/or artistic reference? My HS art teacher/mime director and my grade school Music/HS Humanities teacher (hubby & wife) named their first kid Marc after this one.

      • Sensei

        Chagall was also Jewish.

      • Sensei

Did he drive a diesel van?

(Marc is also the French spelling)

      • Pat

        The squirrels got your link.

Also Chagall Guevara was fronted by a Steve: Steve Taylor. We’re through the looking glass here people!

  5. Ownbestenemy

Happy whatever we are calling sperm donors nowadays day.

Pool, beer, burgers for later, beer, pool , beer, bourbon for later. I think I got it under control with this doing dad things

    • MikeS

whatever we are calling sperm donors nowadays day.

      “Inconsequential”

    • Tundra

Gods who roam the Earth Day.

      • Chafed

Lol. I don’t know about the that but I do have my parents over and am celebrating my dad.

    • Gender Traitor

      bourbon for later.

Are you sure you’re doing that part right?

      • Ownbestenemy

        It is mixed in between

  6. Ownbestenemy

I got 2/3 started and primed for life. That’s a D and passing in most schools

  7. Mojeaux, XX

TBH, I’m shocked Hype knows what a serif is.

Took my husband out for steak. Place was packed.

    • MikeS

      I’m surprised he can read.

      • Tundra

The fuck? Mo’s husband is extremely intelligent!

    • The Hyperbole

I worked for my uncle as a youth, he was in advertising and I ran his vinyl letter cutting machine, I know all about fonts and shit.

      • rhywun

        *finally look-sees*

Now I can’t unsee those damn serifs. They *seem* wrong—because none of the other serif-eligible letters have them—but I am not a type designer by trade so who knows.

      • R.J.

        “Serif-eligible”
Only if the font supports it. Serifs are bit part of punctuation, they are part of a font category z

      • Animal

        Comic Sans or GTFO.

      • R.J.

        THIS IS THE CORRECT ANSWER

      • rhywun

Not sure what you’re going on about but… in Mo’s cover, the I’s have serifs, but the other letters you would expect to have them (M, A, etc.) do not.

      • R.J.

        Drunk! Rambling! Serifs! Aaahhh!

  8. Brochettaward

    Here’s First in your eye!

  9. KK, Non-Man

I just discovered the source of Chadwick’s reactivity towards other dogs.

    It me.

It’s good to know that, so I can hone down which behavior modification techniques would be best.

*he got away from me while the neighbor’s Boston terrier was running around. I yelled to my neighbor “here he comes!”, expecting to hear a bloodbath around the corner. Nope. They were nose to nose and doing just fine. Until Chadwick saw me – then he got growls at the BT.

    • Mojeaux, XX

Well … what can you do for that?

      • Tundra

Additional controlled socialization. Chadwick needs to learn threats vs. non-threats. It’s not unusual – my GSD was really protective of my wife.

Reason # 5 gagillion and 20 why dogs rule.

      • R.J.

My cat would just shrug and eat my body if I was murdered.

      • KK, Non-Man

I have to look it up with some trusted sources (probably Ian Dunbar, Brenda Aloff, Patricia McConnell).

Franklin the pug never had any behavior issues (probably because he was a breeder dog that I raised from 8 weeks), so I’m very rusty.

      • Tundra

We may go back to a purebred next time. Raising a puppy with known craziness is easier.

      • Grummun

        Speaking of puppies…

The pack at Schloss Grummun has increased by one Pembroke Corgi. She’s been in the house a week and I think everyone is starting to adjust to the change.

      • Tundra

My parents had one years ago and my best friend has one now. Such amazing doggies! They are a handful, though.

        Post pics immediately!

      • Grummun

Wilco, presently. Dinner at the in-laws now.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        Covet!

      • Grummun

Whence comes, I wonder, the canine instinct to roll in smelly shit? What is the evolutionary advantage?

      • Pat

It’s like when you’re in prison and you have to attack the biggest guy in the yard so that everybody thinks you’re crazy and leaves you alone.

      • Sensei

Let’s not forget eating it too.

There was some breathless piece I read about dogs eating THC laced human excrement in the “best” parts of our current cities and being hospitalized.

I’m imaging it has happened to approximately two animals…

      • Zwak , who will swing for the crime, in double time!

        It’s no different than perfume.

Also canines are carrion eaters, originally.

      • Animal

To cover the distinctive scent of a predator. Also, I think they like the smell.

Or maybe it’s just to annoy their owners.

As to why my old bird dog would eat carrion and then inevitably throw it up in the truck on the way home, who knows?

      • KK, Non-Man

Also, The Farm YT channel is all about behavior. It’s just that their instructional videos are paywalled

    • Gender Traitor

Sounds rather like the same phenomenon in which a kid pitches a fit when Mommy/Daddy prepares to walk out the door, leaving the kid at daycare. If the parent peeked back moments later, unseen by the kid, said kid was usually playing quite contentedly.

  10. Gustave Lytton

Why does Richard have 5+ diminiutives?

    • Tundra

      Rich
      Rick
      Dick

      What else?

      • Fourscore

        Ricmeister?

      • Chafed

        The Rickenator!

    • Gender Traitor

If one really wanted to be unique, one would go by Chard.

(I’ve mentioned before that I knew a Jennifer who went by Nifer – or Niffer – so as not to be one of the multitude of Jennies. For some reason, though, my high school classmate Stuart objected to being called Wart.)

      • Gender Traitor

Also, a nonconformist Patrick should go by Trick. ::glares pointedly upthread::

      • Pat

If there is anything the nonconformist hates worse than a conformist, it’s another nonconformist who doesn’t conform to the prevailing standard of nonconformity.

      • R.J.

        YEEEEES!

      • rhywun

        Trick

Oof. I don’t think I would like that at all.

      • Raven Nation

        See Topher Grace

      • Chafed

        I’d rather not.

      • Pope Jimbo

The best girl nickname we had in high school was for a girl who’s last name was Matter. We all called her “Nert” (which was short for Inert).

      • DEG

        Heh.

Lots of Jennifers, Jens in my old school.

    • whiz

My parents named me Kerry, thinking there was no way my friends would dimunitize it. Wrong! I became called by some “Ker,” pronounced like “care.”

      • Zwak , who will swing for the crime, in double time!

My dad dimunitized me, calling me ‘Run.

    • Pope Jimbo

The one that used to throw foreigners was calling people named “John” Jack.

      “How is that shorter?”

Don’t know. Just one of the mysteries of the english language.

  11. Gustave Lytton

The Reddit tantrum has gone on long enough. I want them to collect mod scalps. Permaban those babies.

    • Brochettaward

What is going on on the reddits?

      • rhywun

There ain’t no such thing as a free API.

      • Sensei

        That is spectacular.

        Along with them unpinning it.

      • R.J.

Do any of those people pay for it? Or is this hapless whining? I would research but there is important bourbon to drink.

      • Sensei

No. That’s the beauty of the whole thing.

The users moderate and provide content. Reddit has to keep the lights on and sells ads. The API was used to get around ads and some users freaked for charging for access to the API. For a few valid reasons, but mostly because they don’t like “the man” who gives them their allowance.

What that NBA thread lays out in all its glory is the power trip of a subset of the moderators.

      • Gustave Lytton

You can pay for Reddit premium or a third party app. Or via advertising/”free”. Conversely, I don’t think Reddit pays mods at all. And there are third party apps that make using or modding reddit easier.

      • Gustave Lytton

Apparently there is/could be scraping of Reddit data for AI training usage. Gold, Jerry!

      • Brochettaward

The Bro is not a big fan of moderators. Moderators have spent years selectively enforcing rules to ban him if you can believe it. Fuck the mods and the claim they keep communities ‘safe.’

      • Mojeaux, XX

Many of the mods are petty little tyrants, totally inconsistent about applying rules, and they play favorites. They will ban you for liking a comment on a different sub they don’t approve of. Never mind if you say something outside The Narrative™.

      • cyto

I have experienced this personally. Some sub I had never heard of showed up in my feed. I read a couple of threads and someone posted something that was just factually wrong and i happened to know about…. so I chimed in with a couple of links.

        Three year ban for abuse.

Replied to the moderators that it was pretty silly, but to each his own.

Got a couple of childish ad-homenim attacks in response.

Probably a couple of 19 year old kids.

      • Mojeaux, XX

I regularly read AITA, and lots of the responses clearly skew young/naïve/entitled. It wouldn’t surprise me if lots of mods are younguns. They cannot STAND to be challenged in any way.

      • Brochettaward

I’ve been getting banned by leftists on the internet since I was a kid. I’m just used to it at this point. Don’t need to break no rules.

I wish I could say it was isolated to the collectivist, coddled fucks at Reddit. But there’s at least one guy here who isn’t much better.

    • Gender Traitor

Father’s Day isn’t until 7/20 in Tacoma?? Is that when it falls on the Tacoma Orthodox calendar?

    • rhywun

Jeez I’m like two seasons behind.

    • Ownbestenemy

    • Sean

      No.

      Little Free Library?

      • Gender Traitor

There may already be one near you. (There’s one just around the corner from my house, but the last time I looked, the glass had come unglued from the door, which can’t be good for the books in it.) Or if there’s not one close by, you can get your DIY on again and build one! 😃

      • R.J.

There is one at the church down the street.

      • whiz

I’ve been thinking of putting Hazlitt’s Economics in One Lesson in the Little Free Libraries around town.

    • Zwak , who will swing for the crime, in double time!

Ship them to Hyperbowl. I used to read a ton of that type book, but not so much anymore, and I know he still does.

      • Mojeaux, XX

Well, that was my original intent, but he’s not here with his hand up screaming memememememememememememememememememe!!!! and I don’t know where to send them.

      • Zwak , who will swing for the crime, in double time!

He will sober up, and show up, at some point.

      • The Hyperbole

Amazon tells me I already purchased those books 11 years ago, I don’t remember them even after reading the plot summary but I must have like them because I bought the second one months after the first and I bought two other books by the author as well. My memory sucks. This is why I wish I had started keeping a reading log earlier.

  14. Pat

why are some Stephens Stephen and other Steven’s Steven

    And what about those Stephan’s?

        Bill Hader is so great.

  15. Tres Cool

If tomb is pronounced “toom”, and womb is pronounced “woom”, then shouldn’t bomb be “boom” ?

    • whiz

      That would be so onomatopoeiaic.

      • Mojeaux, XX

That list is weird. Look at how they pronounce cocoa and Connecticut.

      • Sensei

        Yes.

They don’t account for region or non US dialects as well.

    • Pope Jimbo

The guys I grouse hunt with all use “grice” as the plural for grouse. My dad would always say that if the plural of mouse is mice, it only makes sense that grice would be plural of grouse.

I hope that is one of the legacies of his that makes it a few more generations. Miss him on Father’s Day.

      • R.J.

But what is the plural of moose?

      • one true athena

Moose are big enough they are already plural.

      • Ted S.

A møøse once bit my sister.

    • Zwak , who will swing for the crime, in double time!

Wait, you don’t pronounce the B?

      Weirdo.

    • Gender Traitor

      And then there’s “comb.”

  16. DrOtto

Went to downtown Austin for my favorite fried chicken at Gus’s with wife and kids for father’s day. To make it convenient, a homeless women panhandled us at our table in the restaurant so we didn’t have to deal with her outside in the heat. Did I mention she was only wearing a bra and britches?

    • dbleagle

She was wearing more than one homeless woman in particular in my town. Close to the beach she is only wearing her skin. Once she crosses the road paralleling the beach to go downtown she drapes a swimming suit wrap (whatever that is called) over her shoulders. When she enters a store or panhandles on the main drag it is more less kinda wrapped around her. The most amazing thing is her feet. She walks across asphalt roads and along concrete sidewalks like a field of spring grass even on the hottest days.

She is for the most part polite, but clearly crazy.

      • Mojeaux, XX

I’mma have to hand over my libertarian card, but I would be okay if there was a social service set up to house and treat crazy people. You know, like we used to have.

      • R.J.

As a fellow libertarian, I voluntarily support this.

      • Zwak , who will swing for the crime, in double time!

        I read that as hose.

      • R.J.

        I support this also.

      • Gender Traitor

        Not necessarily inappropriate.

      • Chafed

        Both are correct.

      • Mojeaux, XX

It puts the lotion on its skin …

      • Pope Jimbo

A buddy of mine barefoots everywhere. He had pictures of him walking barefoot around the rocks at the Arches National Monument on the rocks in August.

Weirdly, he will put on shoes for the cold. If you listen to his proselytizing, the human foot can adapt to heat, but cold just ends up in frostbite and losing toes.

        * I will give him credit though. Since he talked me into giving up shoes and barefooting, my back has never felt better.

      • Mojeaux, XX

You will pry my Birkenstocks out of my cold dead Achilles tendons.

      • dbleagle

Out here the only place I wear shoes to is work. Other than that, everybody out here wears a pair of “Sllippa” aka flipflops, zorries, cheap ass sandals, shower shoes, etc. I fully support this.

Birkenstocks would qualify as semi-formal shoes in Hawaii. In the past I have worn several pairs out but the cost out here is crazy.

Hey hey, new Fall of Civilizations video available:

Carthage-Empire of the Phoenicians…every bit as good as all of the others.
Blood for Ba’al y’all, a pretty interesting bunch.

  18. Zwak , who will swing for the crime, in double time!

Because this is ostensibly about books and what we are reading, I am now about halfway through Wool. Not bad, a little bit predicable, but in a good way. Also, I found a history of the sporting arms of BSA. And as I seem to be acquiring them, I find it very interesting. Finally, I picked up an auto repair guide, or rather, set of guides, from 1919 today, so that should be interesting reading.

Steven King had a couple good stories, but they tended to get as bloated as his head as time went on. Fredrick Brown is awesome, in every genre he tried: SF, Crime, etc.

    • Tundra

      Different Seasons was terrific.

      Other than that, yes.

    • rhywun

Sand and Beacon 23 are also good series after you finish Silo.

  19. R.J.

There is an excessive heat warning. Perfect time to Zoom.

    • Ownbestenemy

We are approaching longest streak without 100+ degrees here in Vegas. Been, *takes off shoes and counts* 281 days since last reached triple digits. Still good pool weather though, even if a bit windy.

      • R.J.

Nice. Wife is mostly recovered from her ills and will be there tomorrow evening for business.

      • Ownbestenemy

Glad to hear she is on the up and up

It has been an unusually cool June here. Only a couple 80+ days so far.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

It’s been an unusually cold June here, too. Down in the flatlands this is triple-digit season, I don’t think that they’ve broken 95 this year.

Our mornings get down to the low 40s. I’m usually in a sweatshirt until about noon.

      • R.J.

That’s all over in DFW. Oppressive heat and humidity started today. Tomorrow the “feels like” will be 110.

      • Fourscore

We skipped Spring, went right from winter to summer, with July weather starting about May 15th No rain but my garden looks super ’cause I have a well nearby. 2 days of near 90 this week, last year we had a total of 4 days 90 or more. We’ve been running the AC for close to a month
with electricity from a box somewhere.

    • Zwak , who will swing for the crime, in double time!

Cold, rainy day here in Orygun.

  20. Raven Nation

Having read some good reviews, I decided to start on Ruocchio’s Sun Eater series. About a third of the way through Empire of Silence. So far it’s decent, if a little slow. Obviously he’s building the character of his protagonist. I find it interesting that the publisher allowed him that much space in the first book of a series to a (relatively) new author).

    • Zwak , who will swing for the crime, in double time!

Maybe they realized that with so much crap out there, when they found something good to just let the author run with it?

    • rhywun

      *tap tap tap*

Interesting – added to a list.

    • slumbrew

I got bored about 40% through book two but maybe I’ll give it another shot.

  21. UnCivilServant

In answer to the Serif Question, yes 1, I, and l need serif distinctions.

    • The Hyperbole

Nope, in most sans-serif fonts the 1 is a two stroke character and the I is one, thus they are already differentiated.

      • The Hyperbole

oh you meant lower case L, as her title is in all upper case that doesn’t matter in this case.

      • UnCivilServant

You’ve already started into the deflection you resort to when you realize you’re wrong.

  22. R.J.

All Star Trek, all day on Comet. This is a Fine Thing.

      • Chafed

There are three if you include Baywatch. I include Baywatch.

      • R.J.

Yes, and Roku has one and there is Heroes OTA. I still am pleased that it is on Comet. YOU CAN’T STEAL MY HAPPINESS!

      • rhywun

I have avoided the news but I assume it’s “Max won” and maybe the Mercs did well? I dunno. Regardless, maybe an alternate broadcast will improve things.

  23. Gender Traitor

    But which one(s)?

    • R.J.

Classic Kirk films. Khan, Search for Spock, etc…

      • Gender Traitor

We will be traveling through there and would like to meet up with all interested on Saturday, July 15th in Frisco.

We will be on the road so I’m handing the details off to R.J.

OK. Let me plan something up and start notifications.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

Thanks, dude. I didn’t want to mention anything until you said that your wife was out of danger.

See you in about a month!

Visiting D2 in Michigan, then attending the memorial for my aunt in Maine. From there we go to my Dad’s cousin’s 90th birthday party in SC, then heading home.

Four major road trip (and two minor ones) in the last 12 months. Looking forward to cooling my heels after this one.

What’s your route to Michigan? Coming anywhere near NoDak?

      • The Bearded Hobbit

We have in the past and will again but this trip is going to be pretty much a straight shot.

I always try to find different routes to our usual destinations. Need to stop in for a visit with you sometime.

We want to make the Honey Harvest again, perhaps this year.

It took me forfuckingever to find out where season 13 of Hoarders was. These seasons on that service, those seasons on this service, another singular season on some such other service and so on. I swan. Anyway, I had to use the search feature on my Roku, which search feature is actually quite awesome.

    • rhywun

I’ve been DVR’ing the new ones on A&E. Old ones enh… not terribly worth rewatching but sometimes I’ll catch one here or there.

There is *one* old episode I was searching for — and I am not sure if it was Hoarders or Hoarding — but it was remarkable for being the most disgusting filth hoard I saw on one of those shows. Like floor to ceiling compacted garbage. Also noteworthy it was some youngish Asian chick, and she was obviously batshit insane.

      • Mojeaux, XX

Can you remember what the tone of the therapy was? Like, dramatic with recurrent names (Hoarders) or reserved and quiet (Hoarding)?

The batshit Asian chick seems familiar, but I feel like maybe it was Hoarding.

      • rhywun

        Nah, I don’t remember.

The only other thing I remember was the house had rats popping in and out of the foundation, and freaking out the neighbors.

I suspect it was Hoarding since that one is far less frequently aired (if at all anymore).

      • Mojeaux, XX

There was one with a NY sewer’s worth of pet rats that got out of control. The house basically was already gutted down to studs, and the therapist took a couple of the pet rats home with her. That was Hoarders. Don’t know if this is the one you’re thinking of.

      • rhywun

Gah no. I don’t think I saw that one.

The other most memorial episode is one of the ones with a lot of dead cats. I even heard coworkers chatting about that one.

    • KSuellington

I don’t need to watch those shows as I get the “pleasure” of working in those houses. I’ve probably been in several dozen at this point. It’s surprisingly more common than people think. Some were “clean “ hoards, no garbage or really bad smells as the hoarded materials was massive amount of books and VHS tapes and such. One person had a literal mountain of paper over 10 feet tall in a living room and you had to walk sideways through books stacked floor to ceiling. Two had dead bodies in it them for extended time that were thankfully removed just before I got there, although the smell in both was so nauseating I was gagging and I have a tough stomach. Possibly the worst, yes even maybe beating the dead bodies and cat hoarders (although one cat hoarder in particular maybe not) was a house that my brother ended up buying. Two four hundred pound individuals and their dog living amongst literal food garbage piled over your head. The rats had a rat problem, I saw multiple ones jumping when I went in there after picking. There was a bed with, not even kidding, dozens of dog shits laid on it. These people could eat, the son would come home every day from the horrible Chinese restaurant up the street with four bursting bags. They cancelled the garbage service we later learned over a year earlier. The smell was so bad the hauler dude I know walked into the garage, halfway up the stairs and turned around, “hell no, I don’t care how much money, I just can’t fucking do that.” It’s now a stunningly beautiful home as my brother is a carpentry artisan.

    Arturo Fuente + Macallan + Father’s Day = Content

    • The Bearded Hobbit

Macallan is a family name and I enjoy the scotch but, holy cow!, $100 a bottle means that it is an occasional pleasure.

      • MikeS

Macallan 12 is “only” about $50-ish…or was when I bought this bottle.

      • Ownbestenemy

        12 is still about that.

      • slumbrew

Aye, the Mac 18 is what got me liking scotch but it’s too rich for my blood these days.

    • Ownbestenemy

Excellent! Buffalo Trace, pork tacos + Father’s day = also content

      Hey, Sean!

Let’s kick this week off indeed!

Divorce was final technically May 1st, but the return trip to pack has been hanging over my head since February.

Now, mission accomplished!! Cheers to all!

      • Sean

        😎👍

      • Grosspatzer

Cheers! Technical divorce is the best kind of divorce!

      • hayeksplosives

Thanks! Actually went pretty darn well.

Closure achieved for both parties. I’ll continue to help with this or that technical issue, medicare enrollment, taxes next year.

        We are on good terms.

      • Grosspatzer

        Good to hear.

    Mornin’, reprobates!

Had a lovely day yesterday. Spawn took me to a minor league baseball game, and paid for the tickets and overpriced crummy food and drinks. I love minor keague BB, they have the coolest promotions. At this ballpark a section of center field bleachers was covered with a black canvas containing a large Mercedes Benz logo and the inscription “Hit sign, win car”. If a batter were to hit this, a drawing would be held and some lucky ticket holder would win a sizable tax liability.

    • Gender Traitor

Good morning, ‘patzie, Nerfy, NA, Sean, and hayek (if you’re still awake.)

I think this is the first time I’ve had Juneteenth off work. If I recall correctly, last year it was officially declared at too late a date for us to arrange for closing. (I don’t even remember if the Fed was closed, which is usually our benchmark.) So… in this house, we’re going to observe the day…by doing yard work and laundry. 🙄

      • hayeksplosives

        Yard work and laundry? LAME.

I plan to go pick some goshdang cotton.

      • Grosspatzer

Picking cotton at 4 AM? Now that is dedication! Also cultural appropriation.

    • hayeksplosives

“some lucky ticket holder would win a sizable tax liability” <—LOL. True though.

Sounds like you made some good memories! Congrats 🙂

I "took my dad on a date". I wore a beautiful sequined burgundy gown with matching shoes. Went out to my fave local bar/restaurant (not a skeevie pick-up sort of place). Had dad's bronze star (newly retrieved from Pahrump) in my pocket. Nobody knew, but I did.

We were on a date. Happy Father's Day.

      • Grosspatzer

“took my dad on a date”.

Damn, that Canadian wildfire smoke is getting to me.
