Lucking Up the Finks – Monday Afternoon

by | Jun 19, 2023 | Daily Links | 199 comments

Let’s all get one thing straight. The music link is going to not work. Somehow, some way, it will not work. I apologize for this, its not intentional, but it is what it is. I will even preview my work today, but… don’t be Otter, don’t fuck up and trust us.

Two weeks ago my toddler could barely walk, today he ran from me holding a toy broom in one hand. I have no idea what the broom has to do with the story, but I’m just reporting what happened. He heard me ask where he was going, turned around, and ran off giggling. Now I have multiple runners. In another week, they’ll figure out they can split up.

Links…

It’s about time for everyone in the world to become armchair meteorologists. First potential tropical storm coming.

A link shared with me by HM about Disney World… do you dare?

Have they checked the bottom of the ocean?

Glad to see my county’s law enforcement cooperating with identity thieves. Hey, if you didn’t want your identity stolen, you shouldn’t have gotten a ticket, right?

In honor of my youngest (nicknamed “Bash”), I give you his theme song… all my kids think Freddie is saying “Bash”, and there’s a lot of random “AHH-ahh”s after someone calls for him. Nothing better than hearing a 2 year old mutter “ahh-ahh” on cue.

About The Author

Brett L

Brett L

Brett set out to find America, the real America, the America of strip malls and serial killers, of butthole waxing and kelp smoothies, of cocaine and maggots. He sought it in the most American part of Americaā€”Florida: swamp gas and fever dreams, where love arrives on a rickety boat and leaves when it doesn't have the money for its fourth abortion. Oh, where has Brett gone? Heā€™s drinking at the neck of Americaā€™s wang, chewing its foreskin and working its shaft. Brett is becoming legend. Brett can never die. Brett can never die. Brett is America, facedown in his own patriotic puke: the red his blood, the white his stomach lining, and the cold, cold blue his gas station slushie, spiked with coconut rum and tetracycline.

  8. The Late P Brooks

Why does that vulgar Nazi racist totalitarian keep calling us names?

Lashing out after his arraignment on federal charges last week, Donald Trump took aim at President Joe Biden and Democrats with language that seemed to evoke another era: He was being persecuted, he said, by ā€œMarxistsā€ and ā€œcommunists.ā€

Trump has used the labels since he first appeared on the political scene, but it lately has become an omnipresent attack line that also has been deployed by other Republicans. The rhetoric is both inaccurate and potentially dangerous because it attempts to demonize an entire party with a description that has long been associated with America’s enemies.

Experts who study political messaging say associating Democrats with Marxism only furthers the country’s polarization ā€” and is simply wrong: Biden has promoted capitalism and Democratic lawmakers are not pushing to reshape American democracy into a communist system.

That hasn’t mattered to Trump and other Republicans, who for years have used hyperbolic references to the associated political ideologies to spark fears about Democrats and the dangers they supposedly pose.

“There we were, just minding our own business, and Trump came into the cafeteria and flipped our lunch trays over.”

    • SDF-7

Yeah — they’re just pushing for a democratic socialist system where the government controls all the industries, they pick winners and losers and get to redistribute wealth in the name of whatever “equity” they dream up at any given moment.

Totally not like Marxism. They pinky-swear.

    • Chafed

Where are the fact checkers when you need them?

    • The Other Kevin

Their side will should be called Nazis and white supremacists, our side should be called normal, commonsense, mainstream, and democratic.

    • Pat

In fairness to the donks, they’re really much closer to Italian fascism than classical Marxism, but something tells me they wouldn’t appreciate the more accurate appellation either.

    • rhywun

Fact Check: Joe Biden does not in fact grow bananas and we’re not really a “republic” in any meaningful sense anymore.

    • MikeS

    Tai-what?

BREAKING: Secretary of State Anthony Blinken gives China the green light to invade Taiwan during his visit to Beijing, China.

“We do not support Taiwan independence.”

What a pivot from Bidenā€™s previous comments from just months ago. What happened?

“Yes, if in fact, there was an unprecedented attack,ā€ Biden said after being asked if he would defend Taiwan from a Chinese invasion.

I guess Faux China will finish off Real China now.

    • SDF-7

Yeah… that sounds more like a piss poor phrasing of the “One China” policy that we’ve had for ages. I think we shouldn’t get the vapors over it.

      • Chafed

It’s not entirely crazy (though it may be wrong) given how Saddam understood something our idiot ambassador said to be a green light to invade Kuwait.

      • Sensei

Iā€™ve not heard that. I am not surprised eitherā€¦

      • Ted S.

The US has always had a policy of “strategic ambiguity”: do the kabuki theater of agreeing that there’s only one China, and trying to keep everyone guessing as to what the government would do if the ROC tried to declare re jure independence from the PRC.

  12. The Late P Brooks

The attacks are carefully constructed to hit voters emotionally, said Steve Israel, a former U.S. congressman from New York who studied political messaging as chair of the House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee.

ā€œDemocrats tend to message to the part of the brain that is about reason and empirical evidence,ā€ he said. ā€œRepublicans message to the gut.ā€

    Stop it. You’re killing me.

The children are rebelling against the gender-bender cult.

East Sussex, England ā€“ A woke British teacher had multiple melt downs after getting humiliated by her teen students in a debate on gender ideology and threatened them afterward.

As the New York Post reported, the incident occurred at Rye College in East Sussex at the end of an eighth-grade ā€œlife educationā€ class. The unnamed teacher attempted to brainwash her students by trying to emphasizing ā€œhow you want to be and how you identify is up to you.ā€

Her tactic failed because following the ā€œlesson,ā€ one of the students mockingly a classmate for identifying as a cat.

So I am not supposed to call him Mandarin Milley?

Protective Servicesā€™s mandate has expanded to include monitoring social media for ā€œdirect, indirect, and veiledā€ threats and identifying ā€œnegative sentimentā€ regarding its wards, according to an Army procurement document dated September 1, 2022, and reviewed by The Intercept. The expansion of the Protective Services Battalionā€™s purview has not been previously reported.

The countryā€™s national security machinery has become increasingly focused on social media ā€” particularly as it relates to disinformation. Various national security agencies have spent recent years standing up offices all over the federal government to counter the purported threat.

ā€œThere may be legally valid reasons to intrude on someoneā€™s privacy by searching for, collecting, and analyzing publicly available information, particularly when it pertains to serious crimes and terrorist threats,ā€ Ilia Siatitsa, program director at Privacy International, told The Intercept. ā€œHowever, expressing ā€˜positive or negative sentiment towards a senior high-risk individualā€™ cannot be deemed sufficient grounds for government agencies to conduct surveillance operations, even going as far as ā€˜pinpointing exact locationsā€™ of individuals. The ability to express opinions, criticize, make assumptions, or form value judgments ā€” especially regarding public officials ā€” is a quintessential part of democratic society.ā€

You can’t criticze the government. What do you think this is, a free country?

    • The Other Kevin

Free Speech was never intended to be used to criticized the government. That’s just like yelling fire in a crowded theater.

  20. The Late P Brooks

Though the term has become popular among mainstream Republicans, it has a darker past. Experts say the concept of ā€œcultural Marxismā€ posing a threat was historically spread by antisemitic and white supremacist groups.

For most voters who hear candidates say someone is communist or Marxist, the true meaning may matter less than the negative associations with the terms, said James Gardner, a University at Buffalo law professor who focuses on election law.

ā€œThe tactic seems to be to pick an adjective that most people think describes something bad and try to associate it with the person you are denigrating,ā€ he said.

Still, while railing against communists and Marxists may be effective at animating voters who form the Republican base, it may not be an effective strategy in next year’s general election, Israel said.

That’s because it doesn’t as easily sway moderate and independent voters who don’t see evidence that ties Democrats to those ideologies.

Or they, you know, approve wholeheartedly.

    • Pat

Nothing dispels those white supremacist conspiracy theories about a cabal of Marxist Jews pulling the levers of power like conflating all criticism of the Democratic Party with anti-Semitism and using it as a pretext for censoring your political opponents.

All evidence that contradicts the narrative doesn’t exist because we said so.

At times, GOP lawmakers insist theyā€™re uninterested in relitigating an attack that is political poison for the party outside of deep-red areas. But at other times, some Republicans have stoked narratives that falsely pin blame for the attack on police, Democrats or far-left agitators ā€” or downplay the violence at the Capitol. The latter approach has seen a noticeable uptick of late.

And itā€™s not just far-right conservatives who fall in that group ā€” some House GOP leaders and key committee chiefs have shown theyā€™re willing to flirt with the fringe without an outright embrace. Speaker Kevin McCarthy has shared security video of that day with far-right media figures who have minimized or fed inaccurate portrayals of the attack.

Due to the extension, opponents of the policies obtained enough signatures to force a new referendum.

The perverts are just exploiting the situation. The parents are using their kids as little virtue signaling devices with no regard for their own child’s well-being.

    Yikes!

    Diversity, ftw!!

Fucking lab should have jumped in, though. I’m disappointed.

Right when I got out of the watch hobby the Chinese started making Tourbillon escapement watches. This one is right around $1k.

    https://youtu.be/p9bXOfbxhWQ

Itā€™s got all the right design and parts, but accuracy is mediocre. (The traces on the watch timer should be parallel and look like railroad tracks running 180 degrees)

If they spent another couple hundred bucks on tweaking the accuracy and the finishes it would be an amazing value. Right now itā€™s just good enough.

    • R.J.

Wow. Something I have never seen before. You Tube gave me an audio renderer error and asked me to restart my computer. Noh!

    • Tundra

      Pretty!

But I’ll stick with my Garmin.

      • R.J.

My ruthlessly efficient Jack Mason Solar will serve me until the apocalypse.

      • Tundra

Yeah, I have a Casio G-Shock solar and atomic that’s running great after 12 years.

        Might order another…

      • R.J.

You should do so before the quality goes to poop, just like everything else.

      • Count Potato

        atomic?

      • Gender Traitor

Got a wall clock and an alarm clock that sync up to that. The wall clock has a traditional face (i.e. not digital,) and if you stay up late enough, it’s kinda fun* to watch the hands zip around the dial moving forward by 11 hours in order to “fall back” when DST ends.

*This should not be construed as an endorsement of DST.

      • Tundra

        Atomic clock. Automatically adjusts.

    • Pat

I was part of a replica watch forum back around the mid to late aughts and there were a few Chinese replicas being advertised with a working tourbillion. A couple of the braver souls ordered them, and it turned out the “tourbillion” was an utterly cosmetic, inert, non-functional mechanism simply placed in the dial window for appearance. The fact that they’ve got an actual working tourbillion in a watch at that price is pretty impressive. That said, yeah, it’s chinkshit.

      • Sensei

Itā€™s finished the way a base ETA movement would be, but with poorer lubrication and hairspring and balance work. Hence the worse accuracy.

      • Pat

I’m no expert by any means, but that seems to be the case with a lot of movements from China. You may recall I bought a cheapo Seagull ETA 6497 clone to start learning/practicing with a few years ago. It arrived functional, but unlubricated as far as I could tell, and about as accurate as counting “one-one-thousand.” If life ever decides to take a break from reaming my ass, I’d like to get back into that.

      • Nerfherder (Non-Non-Man)

Save the lube for the reaming.

      • Sensei

Youā€™ll have a great movement after that!

      • Pat

        Love it here.

  33. The Late P Brooks

    Tut tut

The idea is that when a serious person debates a crank, he elevates and legitimizes him. This was once a sensible rule. When conspiracy theorists were fringe figures, fighting with an established expert was just about the only thing that could raise their profiles. And for the expert, such a fight was a tawdry visit to a best-ignored intellectual gutter.

But neither experts nor cranks are what they used to be. Nor, for that matter, is legitimacy. RFK Jr. is already a nationally recognized personality. Heā€™s a Kennedy; heā€™s the only Democrat after Joe Biden whose polling in double digits; and heā€™s a hero to millions of Americans who sympathize with his unfounded views. Kennedy isnā€™t a voice in some remote fever swamp. He embodies one side of a critical fight in 21st -century American intellectual life. On the question of whether we can dispense with reason and empiricism, heā€™s a solid Yea. Scientists and others donā€™t quite realize it yet, but much of the ground that had been conquered in the name of logic and intellect is once again up for grabs.

Finally, we hear from the serious grownups at Commentary.

    • Nerfherder (Non-Non-Man)

Now, can a scientist reason a conspiracy theorist out of his position? In fact, yes. Thatā€™s what happened to none other than Joe Rogan, who for years was a moon-landing denier. He credits the astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson with changing his mind. Given the wealth of data on vaccines and autism, it shouldnā€™t be hard for an articulate scientist to dismantle the claims of a kooky Democrat. Someone needs to take the money and make the case for the Nays.

Yes, please do. The ass-whooping you’ll get will be worth the price of admission ten times over.

    • Ted S.

and heā€™s a hero to millions of Americans who sympathize with his unfounded views.

He’s a standard-issue lefty who would be a policy disaster on pretty much every issue, but because even a stopped clock is right twice a day, some people think he’s a savior.

      • R.J.

Year ago, it would just be “sympathize with his views.” “Unfounded” is yellow journalism of the worst kind. A paid-off lackey of the government, or even worse, a stupid SOB who does it for free.

  34. DEG

But in Florida, a Social Security number is among 19 pieces of personal information included on ā€œNotice to Appearā€ forms handed out for non-criminal violations.

    See? Procedures were followed.

I remember seeing “Flash Gordon”. That was a trippy movie as I recall.

The one with Brian Blessed? That’s the bomb.

    • The Bearded Hobbit

So campy it needs a Coleman stove.

      My kids loved it.

  35. The Late P Brooks

ā€œWhatā€™s the point?ā€ you might ask. ā€œConspiracy theorists canā€™t be reasoned out of their positions.ā€ This may or may not be true (more on that below). But thereā€™s something bigger at stake: the minds of the undecideds. Americans donā€™t generally fall into discrete, opposing categories of conspiracy theorists and mainstream thinkers. Many today who arenā€™t conspiracy theorists nevertheless find themselves giving conspiracy theories a second look. And the cranksā€™ access to mainstream minds has been facilitated by expert failure and deception. If the public-health VIPs like Hortez hadnā€™t made such a hash of the Covid response, hadnā€™t been dishonest about masks, lockdowns, and the origins of the virus, they might have a better claim to their title as unquestionable authorities. But their mistakes and their arrogance have weakened their position as scienceā€™s gatekeepers. They not only need to discredit the crazies; they need to redeem themselves.

    Whaaat?

Dispel my suspicion you mean they weren’t forceful enough about all those things from the beginning.

    • Nerfherder (Non-Non-Man)

America Celebrates Juneteenth, The Day Republicans Freed All The Democrats’ Slaves

The Senate has unanimously passed a resolution to recognize Juneteenth as a federal holiday, commemorating the glorious day Republicans freed the last of the Democrats’ slaves.

“We are so proud to show the world how not racist we are by officially recognizing the day the Republicans came charging in to free all our slaves,” said Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer. “Yeah– we Democrats did a little ‘whoopsie’ with that whole slavery thing, but the Republicans corrected it. Thanks, Republicans!”

    • Pat

Meh. It’s an idiotic holiday and an idiotic talking point if you ask me. Slavery was still legal until the ratification of the 13th amendment and you had Kentucky, Delaware, and Maryland still in the union even during the civil war, putting the lie to the narrative it was all about freeing the slaves rather than perpetual union.

      • Mojeaux, XX

        It’s just the Bee.

      • Pat

I know, and I swear I’m not a humorless fuck, but the heffalumps flogging the whole “we freed the slaves” thing pushes my buttons for whatever reason.

      • Tundra

Yup. I believe NJ was the last state to give it up.

And the Irish were the first slaves.

I’m fine being a humorless fuck.

    • DEG

Huh. Not what I intended but at least the link works.

That’s the kind of behavior we need in the Senate, not the barroom.

NH State Rep. Dan Hynes leaves Republican Party

Bedford state Rep. Dan Hynes has left the Republican Party over what he says is its abandonment of conservative principles, in particular his opposition to the GOPā€™s embrace of the Parents Bill of Rights.

By changing his party status to ā€œundeclared/independent,ā€ Hynes reduced the size of the GOP majority to 199-196-2 and two vacancies left to fill, exposing yet again how narrowly Republicans are clinging to power in the closely-divided body.

Poll shows Kelly Ayotte most popular choice for NH governor

With popular four-term incumbent Gov. Chris Sununu strongly hinting he wonā€™t seek a record fifth term, an exclusive NHJournal/coefficient poll shows former U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte is currently the top choice among Granite State Republicans to take his place.

As speculation spreads regarding Sununuā€™s future, three names have emerged as the most likely to seek the GOP nomination in the event of a vacancy in the governorā€™s office: Ayotte, Commissioner of Education Frank Edelblut, and former state Senate President Chuck Morse.

In the poll, conducted last week, Ayotte was the choice of 69 percent of respondents. Morse was at 22 percent, and Edelblut 9 percent.
