Only took 8 days for Amazon to realize the most likely AI generated book about the Maui fire that was published on the 10th while the fire was still burning to yank it. They should analyze the supposed author’s other works too.

The New York-born son of a noted abstract expressionist painter, the young De Niro was a serious student of the Method, studying at the Stella Adler Conservatory and Lee Strasberg’s Actors Studio.

New York artsy type since the cradle. No wonder he was such an unconvincing Al Capone (who was also from New York).

To figure out which is better, we need one more piece of information—the interest rate. The interest rate tells you how much it costs to borrow, or how much money you could earn by lending.

What happens if the company goes belly up? If the company gets acquired, do you still have a job? Do you have to pay the money back if you leave? Is you leave and you have to pay the money back, is the handling different if you quit, are fired with cause, or laid off?

There’s a lot more information required. There’s probably more than I mentioned there.

      looks like we’re flowing well

      • DEG

        Yes.

I looked up the author’s background.

I was not at all surprised to find out that he is an academic. Judging by his CV and other digging I’ve done, he’s done nothing outside of academia.

      what if

the Chinese copy your idea and flood the market with cheap imitations

somebody improves on your idea and blows you away before you can even recover your initial costs

your silent minority partner dies (I know: insurance; but what if he’s a big part of the operation)

critical inventory or machinery become much more scarce and expensive

      • UnCivilServant

        What if

Your idea isn’t that great and no one buys

        your business model gets banned

you realize you hate what you’re doing

      • milo

It’s great enough for the Chinese to steal it.
Someone “improves” your idea. The Chinese have stolen it…how are you supposed to protect it at that point?
It gets banned because your political leaders are in the pocket of their Chinese competitors.
Is it any wonder you hate what you have done?

    • R.J.

Also which job makes you happier. How fast you get the money is nigh-irrelevant.

    factors like the risk

risk premia are generally more important than any other figures; he should skip the compounding math and just talk about risk because no one who doesn’t already know is going to do the math, but he might scare at least one person out of a bad decision with some good examples

    • Sensei

Yeah, good luck explaining CAPM to non-math non interested people.

A few months back, I had to decide if buying a $20 reusable coffee mug at my local coffee shop was worth the 20% savings on drinks, and I really used the concept of present value to help in the decision!

    NERDS!

Given what it was up against, it’s not really a surprise, but I was disappointed not to see The Intern on the De Niro list. I find it utterly charming and deeply human; I can’t imagine another male lead doing half so well as Mr. De Niro. Watch it if you’ve not yet seen it.

    • Bobarian LMD

I enjoyed the Intern, but more due to the other characters.

      • Shirley Knott

It was a good ensemble, no doubt about that. I really liked the scene where he gently and politely destroys the proto-Karen mommies. I need to rewatch this one soon. And most of the rest of his work, much of which I’ve not seen.

    NH Sheriff charged

According to New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella, Strafford County Sheriff Mark Brave used taxpayer money to subsidize his love life and lied about it to a grand jury.

“The decision to charge an elected constitutional officer was not made lightly,” Formella said. “However, no person is above the law, and the evidence in this case required action. It is my hope that the public will be reassured that there will be equal justice under the law for every person in this state – including public officials.”

Brave denied any wrongdoing Thursday morning when he turned himself in to state police. He has blamed his downfall on county politics, not his multiple affairs.

“I will go in civilian clothing, no weapons, and bring my $40 for the bail commissioner,” Brave told Foster’s Daily Democrat prior to his arrest. “I expect I will be photographed and fingerprinted. What I want is to get ahead of this situation and to get a trial date.

“I will fight this all the way. If I had done anything wrong, I’d own it. But I, 100 percent, did nothing wrong.”

    • ron73440

However, no person is above the law,

A demonstrably false statement, but it seems to be what the cool kids are saying.

There’s a few DeNiro flicks I haven’t seen that look interesting.

He was in something I watched recently,; it was so memorable I can’t tell you what it was.

However, I watched Gas Pump Girls (va-va-vooom) last night, which featured a small role by Mike Mazurki, the Velma-obsessed tough guy from Murder My Sweet.

    So there.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

He’s been in a lot of bad movies in recent years. He’s on screen for a few minutes so they can use his name. For some reason he still needs the money.

      • rhywun

        Good grief.

      • MikeS

I’ve seen other famous old dudes do this. I think having children at his age is incredibly selfish. There is a very good chance she will never know her father. Even if he lives long enough, he’ll be close to 100 when she graduates high school. I just think it’s grossly unfair to the kid.

      • Tundra

        Couldn’t agree more. Douche move.

Daddy that loves me…or money to keep me comfy for my entire life? What to do?
I have to go with the Daddy option as that is what I had, but the other option has some other shiny objects I could enjoy.

      • MikeS

Oh for sure. The kid is going to start life with a big headstart. And hopefully get’s a great step-dad to fill the void.

As Michael Caine said (I’m paraphrasing) about Jaws: The Revenge, “I have not seen it, but by all accounts it is a terrible movie. I have, however, seen the house it paid for, and that is magnificent.”

“This time it’s personal.” I can still remember the entire theater bursting out laughing during that preview.

The massive name-brand hits seem to represent both the good and bad of the current industry.

You have to keep reading to arrive at their totally surprising conclusion of which one is “good” and which one is “bad”.

  13. The Late P Brooks

Yeah, good luck explaining CAPM to non-math non interested people.

I can’t keep from laughing every time I see one of those “It’s my money, and I want it now!” commercials. I’d really like to sit in while they explain net present value to your average lottery (ghetto or otherwise) winner.

What’s the discount rate when the interest rate is zero, by the way?

    • John Nerfherder

I want it now so I can get it out of the country.

  14. The Late P Brooks

I keep seeing stories about Ukrainian drones ruling the sky. Why do they need F-16s?

    • The Last American Hero

So the pilots can train for the Olympic beach volleyball team.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Because those stories are largely BS (not so much BS but the effects of the success are greatly exaggerated) and the Ukrainians are getting shitmixed. Unfortunately for them the F-16s will do the trick just like the Leopard IIs did, meaning not at all.

  17. Toxteth O'Grady

DeNiro was very good in the underrated movie (and memoir) This Boy’s Life, with a young Leo DiCaprio.

    • Drake

When I see DeNiro in an interview, all I can think is “empty vessel”. Directors and writers can fill him up with their characters without displacing an existing personality.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

The best actors mostly seem to be that way, both intellectually and in personality. The exceptions are rare but there.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

As was said about Peter Sellers.

      • Mojeaux

I honestly don’t think he’s as good an actor as people talk about. He’s one of the dudes I see as playing themselves in almost every movie they’re in (see: Al Pacino, Robin Williams). The good actors are intelligent, have independent thoughts, are a good interview subject, and can ALSO disappear into a character (see: Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman).

Doesn’t the mother get a say? Maybe it’s what she wants.

    • MikeS

Of course the mother gets a say. But maybe the two selfish fuckers should think about the kid.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

      I bet it i$.

And what…if she wants it he must do as she says?

And if it wasn’t intentional? It’s better than the alternative.

I’m just not seeing it as something unequivocally bad. Is it “suboptimal”? Probably.

    • MikeS

An accident is an accident. That’s different. And if that’s what this is, I respectfully ask Mr. Di Nero to accept my apology.

But a geriatric man purposely having a kid seems exceedingly selfish to me. It’s not fair to the kid.

    • Tundra

      That’s fair.

      I retract my condemnation.

      • MikeS

I can’t even with you right now.

    • MikeS

Wait, I’m not saying they should abort for fucks sake. I am not and was never talking about an oopsie-baby. All I’m saying is old dudes having a kid they are almost guaranteed to not see grow up is very selfish.

    • Tundra

      “Bit”

  24. UnCivilServant

I got some “Low Odor” resin. We’ll see if it does smell less. (Still wearing the respirator, because I’m not stupid) I’ve started printing the torso and left arm of a MadCat. It should finish by 5am. Will still have to print the right arm and legs. (The torso takes up a stupid amount of the print plate, so I only had room for one arm.)

As an upside, this resin is translucent, so… maybe it’ll be easier to see the pins while I’m setting up assembly. I’m also testing how well it prints a larger solid piece. (if I don’t find out for sure, I’ll always fear the weight)

    • MikeS

What happens to a bad print in a resin set up? In a filament set up you end up with a great big pile of plastic spaghetti. I’m trying to picture what could go wrong and what it would look like in a setup like yours but I don’t know much about them.

      • R.J.

It’s resin, so a pool of sticky smelly goo?

      • MikeS

There’s so many ways to reply to that. But alas, I must go replace front pads and rotors on my truck.

      • CPRM

Like at the Primitive Primate Exhibit?

      • UnCivilServant

I think it depends on how it failed.

On my test print, there was a base topper that wasn’t properly supported, so it fell off and rested on the bottom of the vat. there, it blocked any additional resin from being reposited, and I was left with a thin disk of resin stuck to the bottom of the vat. (It came off relatively easily). Not as bad as spagetti plastic, but I’m sure there are other failure modes I haven’t seen yet.

  25. The Late P Brooks

Not gonna link it, but just read a fascinating Jacobin piece about inflation. Talking about oil and gas price inflation, including dumping strategic reserve inventory on the market without ever once mentioning Comrade Joe’s deliberate harpooning of the petroleum industry is impressive.

That (politically) strategic oil reserve was so effective we should do it with everything. The government should accumulate and judiciously distribute food supplies, commodity metals, nylon stockings, you name it, in order o maintain perfect copuntercyclical equilibrium in the markets.

    It’ll work this time.

    • John Nerfherder

I predict crickets from them about the taxes it will require to refill it at higher prices and the resulting price spikes.

  26. Stinky Wizzleteats

Huh, I picked up a window AC unit at Best Buy today as kind of an impulse buy and it has the new flammable refrigerant, propane I think. I…don’t like that.

    • Sean

Don’t set it on fire. And maybe don’t shoot it.

    • Swiss Servator

I am on! Well, OK, that doesn’t do much…

      • Ted S.

Time to hop on and start spouting bad puns?

  27. The Late P Brooks

I predict crickets from them about the taxes it will require to refill it at higher prices and the resulting price spikes.

that makes the economy stronger. And besides, only rich people will pay.
