Saturday evening links. Sigh…

You ever have one of those days?

Mexi nailed it on the head this morning. Ol’ Spud is fresh out of ideas today, but we gotta come up with something. I mean, I was going to do cryptids…

Here we go.

It’s gonna get worse.

I still don’t think this kid knows how deep the hole is he’s standing in.

Okay, but where does the T-1000 fit in?

I dunno. Don’t try and cross the Sonoran desert in July or August?

Just hope it doesn’t last more than four hours.

And that concludes today’s festivities. Peace out, Glibbies! NSFW.

I think our latest NPR Lady should take a turn doing links.

Oh, thank you! I needed that. I’m still laughing.

    • Shirley Knott

On the one hand, that could be a hoot and a half.
On the other, it means she’d be meeting most of us, and in our natural state. Which might also be a hoot, but I’m not sure OMWC would survive.

      • Nephilium

She met several of us. And they are still together.

      • Shirley Knott

Yeah, but ‘all’ of us, commenting on her links? Not ruling out that it’s possible, but I’m just a teensy bit skeptical.

      • Tres Cool

But this isn’t the bloodbath lynx from TOS was. It was an order of magnitude worse.
        Hell, we have manners.

OMG. She really needs to fade away. It’s impossible to read that piece without calling to mind numerous examples of left wing versions of everything she points out as right wing wrongdoings.

So much projection. So many generalities.

The piece wasn’t written to persuade conservatives or even centrists.

Who is she trying to reach?

Sorry it is one of those days; Spud. Appreciate the effort all the same.

I think most of the news makes us all feel β€œMeh” lately. I’m trying to dodge it at the moment by rereading the light sorbet that is Harry Potter. Though not looking forward to book 5 and up when he gets full Bratty Teen mode going.

/suppresses urge to scream READ ANOTHER SERIES

I have spent my day watching the reboots/remakes of sci-fi “classics”. Rise of the Planet of the Apes was surprisingly solid, the Total Recall reboot comes a bit closer to the source, and has some conversations that seem PKD inspired. I think it would be better received if the original had never been made.

      • Not Adahn

Netflix has the first five Fast and Furious movies. They are surprisingly wholesome.

      • SDF-7

Heh. My Dad actually asked me to get those. He then said they’re horrible. β€œGood if you like people shaking their butts” was the review, I think. πŸ˜‰

      • SDF-7

I’ve reread Covenant, The Mote in God’s Eye and The Lost Fleet before this. I just wanted something pure fluff. Not saying it is anything else.

      • SDF-7

Thanks. I’ll consider it. 15 book series I need solid recommendations on β€” since they could easily be a Piers Xanthony style β€œ crank out more crap” and all.

      • robodruid

I wont say they aren’t cranked out. But i sincerely like the light heartened version of space opera.

      • Shirley Knott

All 10 Covenant books? You’re a sturdy soul! I need to start the 3rd series over and forge through. But yeah, I need fluff more than I need Covenant his year.
BTW, if you’re considering Donaldson’s The Great God’s War, I’d advise against. Book 1 was the shortest, and best. Book 2 had its moments, but the marital angst was suffocating. Book 3 was a gigantic let-down. Possibly due to publisher & editor meddling. They objected to the length of the original final volume, he gave up on it, then “found a way” to resolve it all within their constraints. Regardless of why, though, it blows chunks.

      • SDF-7

Yeah… after Last Chronicles, I couldn’t bring myself to try those. I read the description on Amazon and it just wasn’t clicking.

Speaking of (relative) fluff, I could go reread Daughter of Regals. For Donaldson, I think that was as light as he got. I contain capricious multitudes.

      • Zwak , β€œThere is infinite amount of hope in the universe… just not for us.”

My favorite Donaldson was the Gap into… series. But I think I am alone in this.

      • Shirley Knott

Yeah, I read it, but it left a bad taste in my mouth. No interest in re-reading it, unlike most of his other stuff.

      • SDF-7

I never made it through that one. I think I set it down for some reason in book 3 and simply never had the urge to go back.

Probably would enjoy it more if I were into opera and whatnot. But I’m not.

      • Shirley Knott

I’m extraordinarily fond of the story “The Killing Stroke” in Reeve the Just. I should re-read that whole collection.

      • Shirley Knott

If I were ever to write a “light” book on ethics, “The Killing Stroke” and Ursula LeGuin’s “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” would be in the supplementary material. Heck, they might be the supplementary material, at least as far as fiction goes.

      • SDF-7

Hmmm… haven’t reread those in a while. I remember liking The Killing Stroke (and The Djinn Who Watches Over The Accursed) but not much detail. Flushed from cache apparently.

      • rhywun

        Flushed from cache apparently.

Ugh I was going through boxes of paperbacks to toss and it was one after another of a book I know I really enjoyed but completely forgot all the details.

      • Zwak , β€œThere is infinite amount of hope in the universe… just not for us.”

So, Omelas, as someone pointed out to me, is Salem, Oregon spelled backwards. Apperently, as this was before my time, there was a huge scandle along those lines here in Oregon just before she wrote that.

      • Zwak , β€œThere is infinite amount of hope in the universe… just not for us.”

“Ugh I was going through boxes of paperbacks to toss and it was one after another of a book I know I really enjoyed but completely forgot all the details.”

That is the perfect time to reread them!

  6. Rebel Scum

I think this is what Roger Stone is predicting.

A source says that in conversation with a foreign politician, it emerged that their government assumes Joe Biden will not be the Democratic nominee in 2024. Joe will pull out before the first primaries; it will be too late for a grassroots candidate to enter the fray; an establishment stooge will be crowned at the convention. And the name of that lucky winner? Michelle Obama. It’s a wild scenario, but if it does happen, please remember that you read it here first.

    Divine intervention.

Stunning video shows a historic Catholic church in Lahaina miraculously still standing and unscathed after devastating wildfires ripped through Maui β€” while the rest of the historic town was turned into an apocalyptical nightmare.

Maria Lanakila Catholic Church, which opened in 1846, was captured in a video, posted on TikTok, standing tall and untouched.

When the camera pans around, the rest of the town β€” the largest tourist destination on Maui β€” looks like a smoldering hellscape of rubble.

Today Judge Tanya Chutkan warned Trump’s lawyers that politics had no place in her courtroom or in this case.

But here is Judge Chutkan berating a J6er during a sentencing hearing in Oct. 2022.

Ukraine war: Sex lives in focus for Ukraine’s injured veterans

At a modern office in central Kyiv, a 26-year-old Ukrainian veteran is proudly playing a video on his phone that shows him passionately kissing a young woman in a kitchen.

It is an advert for ReSex: a charity that tries to help former soldiers with their sex lives, after suffering physical and mental trauma.

    […]

Ivona Kostyna is one of the founders of Veteran Hub, the group which runs the ReSex project.

She says they first had the idea for the project back in 2018, after reading about the issue for US soldiers.

After securing funding with the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, they spoke to Ukrainian soldiers and experts, to ensure they were tailoring their help specifically to the men and women who need it.

They faced some confusion from the public – and veterans – when they first asked for responses to questions online. “People are dying, you’re thinking about sex!” Ivona says.

They also had to confront some of their own preconceptions – like the false assumption that injured veterans would all be struggling with their sex lives.

“There’s sex in the hospital, sex at home, sex before procedures, sex after. There’s a lot of good sex going on,” Ivona says. “We were like, wow, OK, how can we be helpful here?”.

But overall, she says, the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

I was going to make a joke about US taxpayers being the ones getting fucked in Ukraine, but I think it’s too on the nose.

I could be totally wrong, but I don’t think he’s probably got enough dirt on anybody to get Epstein’d, so as long as he plays along with the show trial, the charges will quietly disappear in a couple years, he gets probation and restitution, and gets to live in his exorbitantly wealthy family’s 4th villa somewhere.

I am following in UCS’s footsteps with a new air fryer/grill – just grilled a steak. A strip steak of the sort I would not attempt on the stove but I’ll be damned if the thing came out pretty damn tasty, even much of the fatty portions that I normally spit out were rendered more than I have usually been able to achieve. And the smoke alarm did not go off which is a big win.

I am looking forward to trying out the “air fry” button with some chicken nuggets tomorrow.

    • Fourscore

Mrs F air fried some bacon wrapped chicken parts today for lunch. The bacon wrap didn’t really add much, chicken skin is fatty and needs to be crisped up a little anyway. Nonetheless it was good, bacon would have been good as a side.

      • MikeS

I had a smoked, bacon-wrapped Oreo cookie once. Delicious.

      • rhywun

Bacon-wrapped anything is outside my skill-set for the time being but that reminds me I will have to try chicken wings soon.

i did not like that music. I did not like it with an echo. I did not like it with delay. I did not like it with chorus. But I’m glad you posted it for us. I did not like that electro-classical blot.
I did not like it, Shirley Knott.

Good morning, Shirley, cyto, Ted’S., Sean, Lack, Roat, and Mr. ‘herder!

Music link? Well, I just set the SiriusXM classical channel stream to restart Vox Choral, and they’re kicking it off with Vivaldi as well – his “Vespri per l’Assunzione di Maria Vergine,” which according to the host is about three hours long…so I won’t search for nor link to it. You’re welcome. πŸ˜‰

Your Vivaldi link was…interesting! You had me until it got REALLY dissonant. πŸ˜„

      • Shirley Knott

It gets over it ;-). There’s also Vivaldi with Cannons on the same album, and Ultra Vivaldi on Phantasmagoria.
Curved Air is one of those great but too obscure pre-prog bands. Sonja Christina ha a wonderful voice.
Darryl Way went on to form his own band, Wolf, with pretty pedestrian music. One of those musicians better off in a collaborative environment.

We are on our second Air Fryer, after accidentally setting the first one on fire. (someone accidentally set it on one of the stove burners and knocked the knob to turn it on high. Plastic actually burns if you do that. No, I’m not saying who. But only because the wife sometimes looks over my shoulder and she doesn’t like me talking about her)

The thing is magical for leftover french fries. If there is one thing that is useless, it is a bunch of leftover fries. They just cannot be microwaved back to life. And the oven is just too much and takes too long to come to temperature, and they go from soggy to burnt in a rather short time.

But in the air fryer, you can revive soggy, refrigerated fries in just a couple of minutes. McDonald’s fries work particularly well.

Also great in the air fryer – frozen, prepared foods. We do nugget based chinese diners… General Tso’s, Orange Chicken, Honey Garlic Chicken.. there are several brands that make passable chinese of the “cook these nuggets and pour this sauce over it” variety. They used to be really cheap. Now they are just moderately reasonable. But the air fryer does them justice in less than 10 minutes. It is also great for egg rolls, spring rolls, pot-stickers…. all sorts of asian frozen foods. And pizza rolls and hot pockets. Yes, I ain’t too proud to do a hot pocket. Don’t judge me.

Chicken legs do surprisingly well with the horribly underwhelming preparation method of salt, pepper and onion or garlic powder. I accidentally discovered this by buying one of those 10 pound bags of chicken leg quarters for $5. I cut the thighs off and butchered them for boneless, skinless thigh meat for teriyaki chicken. But then I had a bunch of legs. The kids didn’t want shake and bake, and mom won’t eat it in any form… so I just dumped a few in the fryer with minimal seasoning. They came out rather good. My elementary school daughter ate them with ketchup, because she eats every chicken product with ketchup. So she was happy. The middle school girl was in a mood, so she made pasta fro herself and her mother. The teenage boy slammed the rest of the legs…. because teenage boy. We had them with rice.

I also did skin-on chicken breasts to good effect with just butter and salt. It crisped up nicely. Most meats would go to the grill, but if you don’t feel like dealing with all that for 2 breasts, or it is raining…. it works just fine.

    • Lackadaisical

      ” No, I’m not saying who. ”

I won’t tell if you don’t. My wife certainly would never do something similar.

Good luck on the kids. My little guy’s eating has improved a lot, chicken of any variety is a hit with him.

      • Lackadaisical

Now that I think about it, almost all meat products are a win. For a little while I was afraid he’d shy away from meat when he realized all the animals they come from, but it anything he relishes it more now.

      • cyto

Kids these days lead a very different life.

When I was young, meat was often a once a week thing. Every meal had veggies and starch and fruit – probably from a can. It was mostly bland, mushy and not very good.

Later, the stereotype became all burgers and chicken nuggets and mac and cheese. But always “kids are picky”.

Not my kids generation. We didn’t have much in the way of variety where I grew up. We didn’t get Chinese food until I was in Junior high. I didn’t have *good* Chinese food until I was a senior in college. My kids? They have always had all manner of foods from all over the world. Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, French, Italian, Cuban, Columbian, Brazilian…. They eat it all. They can still be somewhat picky (the little one hates “spicy”), but compared to the prior generation? It is crazy. Pizza, nuggets and burgers was about it.
