Not actually our pets. Her cat is scared shitless of my dog.

The real losers in my recent involvement with NPR Lady are the pets, her cat and my dog. They’re VERY pissed off that they don’t get as much attention as they like. So far NRP Lady’s cat has pissed on two of her pillows, pissed in her bed under the blanket, and shit under her living room couch. My puppy Kaiser shit twice in the hallway after we temporarily locked him out of the bedroom, then when he came back in, he stared at us while he pissed on the carpet.

Fortunately, neither of us own monkeys.

Anyway, birthdays, since that’s all anyone reads here. And today’s are worth reading, including a guy who enabled the Wizard of Oz; a guy who showed what happens when science and politics collide; a guy who lived ON the grid; a guy who put drugs on sugar cubes long before Timothy Leary; a thieving fanatical Albanian dwarf; a Mafia in the House before Pelosi; a guy who, along with his successors, wins “Most Deserving of the Woodchipper”; a guy I find puzzling; a guy with no strings attached; and an endorser for Noxema shaving cream.

Now for the main course, the Links.

You know he spent hours practicing the scowl just for this.

“If there aren’t new threats, there’s not going to be new money.”

Nice kitty.

I’m sure there’s a racism angle to this.

Non-profit journalism fails to turn a profit. Huh.

Good luck enforcing THAT.

There are excellent guitarists and there are master guitarists. Joe Pass was a master guitarist.

    a guy who put drugs on sugar cubes long before Timothy Leary;

    Way to misgender Björk.

    • Zwak , “There is infinite amount of hope in the universe… just not for us.”

      Poignont, yet not precocious.

  2. Gender Traitor

They’re VERY pissed off that they don’t get as much attention as they like.

Maybe that’s what’s bothering all the folks relieving themselves on the streets of San Francisco. (Hmmm… if this show were made today, would it follow the adventures of sanitation workers instead of cops?)

  3. Sean

I agree with the cell phone ban in classrooms. *shrug*

    • Not Adahn

I imagine it’s to protect the teachers from getting busted.

      • John Nerfherder

Eh, they can use their tablet or laptop for that

    • SDF-7

Me too… and I posted a bit of my thoughts on it… and a damned server squirrel ate them. So fuck it… I’m going to go goof off before the grocery store opens. Y’all have fun.

    • cyto

The article says students are to keep their phones in their lockers – do kids get lockers these days? None of our local districts have lockers. The kids carry their stuff in a bag.

And they don’t carry around textbooks either. That stuff is all online if you want it, so the books stay in class.

    • Gadfly

Agreed. Between the distraction and the incentive to misbehave I think phones are a net negative in schools. I’m surprised they were ever allowed. When I (a millennial) was in school we weren’t allowed to have phones, and that was back before the phones got “smart”.

  4. SDF-7

a guy with no strings attached

Dammit… I was guessing the voice actor in Disney’s Pinocchio. Ah well. Morning, all. Happy Weekend.

Cat doesn’t surprise me — dog being bold enough to look right at you when he did it does. I’m sure all the dog raising / pack mentality books would give suggestions on how to reestablish your dominance or something…

    OMWC, Spud, and other foodies:

Also, the Washington County Cheese Tour is Sep 9 and 10. I do recommend it. I know a guy who has a reasonably priced AriBnB hte next county over.

    • DEG

I got some of their cheese based on your recommendation. That stuff was good.

I might go get some more. Thanks!

    “A divided US”

Maybe not quite as divided as the media would like to pretend

    https://twitter.com/bennyjohnson/status/1695035013702500677?t=kYa0_PHBh-4gBX9utHgvIg&s=19

If a bunch of poor African-Americans from the hood spontaneously run out to cheer on a white supremacist, transphobic, Nazi with cries of “free Trump!” In the very city that stayed up all night waiting until the rest of the state’s votes were counted so that Trump could be defeated by overwhelming turnout and homogeneity of votes……. maybe that division is just an illusion.

    • Lackadaisical

I wouldn’t put too much stock into so few people, but if you did want to get inner city blacks to vote for Trump, turning him into a gangster getting railroaded wouldn’t be the worst way.

  7. cyto

Interesting that those HBCU’s don’t see a threat in fomenting racial hatred, particularly among the poor. No, the threat lies in pointing out that there is an organized effort to re-create a racist society and in trying to prevent it.

    • John Nerfherder

There were some HBCUs which weren’t that interested in pursuing the constant racism angle.

The feds have made it clear that if they want money, then they have to support the narrative.

  8. rhywun

the threats to teaching Black history

    Oh, fuck off. Next!

    • cyto

That was certainly a more succinct way of making the same point…..

    • Grumbletarian

Tut tut, all goodthinkers know the real reason the Pilgrims left Europe was to find black and brown people to enslave.

  9. rhywun

I’m sure there’s a racism angle to this.

The sub-heading sure hints at that, but it’s pay-blocked so Next!

The drummer in the video is Joe Porcaro. He’s the father of Jeff, Mike and Steve Porcaro of Toto fame. All studio musicians and very good in their own right. The apples landed close to the tree.

Did some maintenance on the CZ before today’s match. How reliable is this gun? Well the reason I was inspired to clean it had nothing to do with the action, but rather the magazines weren’t falling as freely as I’d like. Last cleaning was 3000+ rounds ago.

    • EvilSheldon

Watch out for gunk buildup around the screw that holds the magazine catch spring. If it gets too gunked up in there, you might have to detail-strip the frame to clean it out.

      • hayeksplosives

Dude, did you see my message regarding the cruise? You’ll need to contact Suzanne so that she can mark you down properly as single occupancy.

        Actually saves a little money.

      • EvilSheldon

I spoke to Suzanne a few days ago. I’m only single occupancy as a place holder – I’m open to possible roomies who want to share a cabin. Just haven’t found one yet.

      • MikeS

Maybe if you change your name to Super-friendly Sheldon?

        😉

    • Sean

      LOL

    • Fourscore

Back in the Olden Days , at that stage, my eyes would cross and I wouldn’t see much of anything. Glad that those days are an almost forgotten memory

    • Tundra

We’ll see. Supply is still really constricted.

    • Fatty Bolger

You still have the supply issue. Those same surveys show that about 40% expect prices to rise, and barely above a quarter think they will fall.

      • hayeksplosives

        What could possibly go wrong?

Teen (average American in debt) to parent (US Government setting example of financial responsibility): “I LEARNED IT FROM YOU!!!”

      • Fatty Bolger

Zillow pays the rest of the down payment to get to the minimum, and it’s not a loan. And there are other requirements:

To qualify for the Zillow low down payment option, borrowers must be first-time home buyers, complete an education course on homeownership and intend to occupy the property as their primary single-family residence, the company said.

In addition, the borrowers must have a minimum qualifying FICO credit score of 620, earn income below 80% of the median income where the property is located, and meet any additional underwriting requirements as applicable.

    • DrOtto

The supply is constricted by companies that bought up housing stock to flip. Now that prices are stagnating, they have 2 choices, hold and sink or sell at a discount. It’s about to get ugly quick.

      • creech

Factor in those who would be selling present home except for fact they don’t want to trade a 3 percent mortgage for a 7 percenter.

      • Fatty Bolger

Why does holding mean sinking? They can rent (long term or short time). Rents are going up, and are on track to setting historical highs, surpassing the peak in 2022.

Speaking of working against corporate goals, this popped up on Twitter last night:

    https://twitter.com/libsoftiktok/status/1695164391694487592?t=V5jI6tYKucLMH2db8fiqDA&s=19

    And

    https://twitter.com/jonesville/status/1695187373951439273?t=OBDI5rGCMhuLGh5wMxRCJw&s=19

Now, I have a hard time believing this. Disney has such strict requirements for their cast members at their parks. They are always so excellent.

    And yet……

Those look pretty authentic and they fit with what has been happening at Disney studios. Even Pixar can’t make a good movie anymore because of “the message” (tm critical drinker)

    • John Nerfherder

I saw that as well and wondered “Is this real?”

If it is, Disney is dead.

      • cyto

Wait, are you saying parents of very young children might balk at the idea of dudes with beards dressed as disney princesses greeting and shepherding their children?

      • Sean

        Only those fly over bigots.

    • Sean

I can’t be bothered to fact check, but I’m fairly certain that was real.

    • rhywun

I did the “discrimination-free workplace” training yesterday at work.

I would literally get hauled in front of HR if I objected to that in any way, and I think that’s pretty standard across corporate America now.

  13. Old Man With Candy

Just got back from the Rochester City Market. Dog got MAJOR attention- puppies are wonderful chick magnets. NPR Lady was my Palantir.

    • John Nerfherder

She allows you to talk to the Dark Lord?

      • Zwak , “There is infinite amount of hope in the universe… just not for us.”

Well, that amounts to “listen to NPR” these days.

      • SDF-7

We’ll know if WebDom starts showing up with a white hand on her forehead.

    • rhywun

Is that the Public Market? I remember a school trip in 4th or 5th grade. We could walk there. Super sketchy neighborhood even then.

      • Old Man With Candy

Yep, that’s the one. People were super chill there and the food was cheap and good.

      • rhywun

Neat. And nice that it’s still around.

My elementary school on the corner of 1st St. and Central Pk. is apartments now.

      • SDF-7

Love that joke… linked it here not long ago and no one said anything. Glad to see I’m not the only one who remembers it.

      • Tundra

One of my faves. One downside of having grown children is fewer opportunities to watch the Muppets.

      • Tres Cool

        Why?
Muppets and Bugs Bunny cartoons my dumbass will sit and watch by myself.

  14. Tundra

    Good morning, Old Man!

In addition to being allergic, cats pissing everywhere presents an obstacle for me ever getting one. I hope Kaiser comes around and stops revenge-shitting.

Here’s a non-paywall link to the WSJ scans article.

What a limp-dick article. If I want to drop some money on a scan, it’s my goddamn business.

Demand for these types of procedures has surged, particularly among the wealthy, healthcare professionals say. People are driven by a fear of mortality.

They are mind readers, too. Maybe some people are realizing just how hard the food and pharma industries have fucked us.

The ACPM has published formal guidance recommending against full-body scans in asymptomatic patients. The American College of Radiology released a statement in April: “There is no documented evidence that total body screening is cost-efficient or effective in prolonging life.”

    So? Go fuck yourself.

“We often see patients coming to the hospital because of an incidental finding, and we have to deal with it,” says Dr. Thomas Kwee, associate professor in the University of Groningen’s radiology department and lead writer on the meta-analysis. “We scratch our heads and we think, is this really necessary?”

Isn’t that, you know, your fucking job?!?

    I hate doctors.

    • hayeksplosives

My former boss had some “use it or lose it” medical cash at the end of a year, and he had some minor back pain.

He decided to get a full body CT scan with the money.

Nothing remarkable about his back, but the docs saw a growth on one of his kidneys. Incidental finding; and yup, it was malignant cancer. Thanks to the scan, he was able to keep the kidney and just had a minor surgery to scoop out the bad part, not much more than a biopsy would have taken.

He was about 45 years old at the time, 4 kids. I’d say that was money well spent. Why would doctors discourage a scan?

      • Lackadaisical

        Doesn’t sound very equitable.

      • Fatty Bolger

Just shows how much the scarcity and rationing mentality has crept into the profession.

      • cyto

        Exactly so.

And most places have “certificate of need” laws for new hospitals and expensive equipment like PET scanners. You know… to protect the public from dangerous competition and oversupply.

  15. The Other Kevin

I had a few cats that exhibited that behavior. Had.

    • hayeksplosives

It might be separation anxiety. Curable with some minor changes.

Dogs revenge pee. Cats only do it from separation anxiety; they pee so that you can come back and find them. That’s why it’s usually near doors or on bedding; they go in the last place they saw you.

  16. DEG

The first category, Pantherinai, encompasses big cats such as lions and jaguars, and the second, Felinai, groups together smaller cats – including domestic cats – as well as cougars and other wild cats.

Whereas Pantherinae are able to roar, Felinae produce the soft purr familiar to many, their larynx not being stiff enough to produce a roar.

    Cougars… purr… hmmm….

For students who can’t be separated from their devices, they must be placed in lockers and powered down. The policies for these three schools reflects the growing problem with cell phones in school. Besides the natural distraction of a “smart phone,” disciplinary issues surrounding students using cell phones have been a growing concern. Privacy issues, cyberbullying, and inappropriate behavior have all been major factors in this policy change.

I wonder how much of that inappropriate behavior is students filming teachers behaving badly.

On the other hand, the old fart in me says good on the schools…. if they were private.

    Old Guy Music is good.

    This week’s powerline fun.

    • R C Dean

The first question should be: How does a student having a smartphone with them advance the student’s education?

The second question: Does this outweigh the distractions and other downsides?

I’m thinking the phones lose on this analysis.

      • Tundra

I get annoyed when people bring them to meetings.

      • Zwak , “There is infinite amount of hope in the universe… just not for us.”

Ugh, when they keep looking at them while you are trying to talk to the person. A friend of mine was doing that when we were having dinner, and I told him I would curb stomp is iPhone if he kept that shit up. Fuck I have come to really hate cell phones. Lock the little bastards phones up when in class, serves them right, and it is in no way a violiation of civil rights.

      • Lackadaisical

That’s about right. I think the educational value of technology more advanced than books is greatly overrated.

      • UnCivilServant

Simple compromize. Ban the phones, livestream the classroom.

“Sixty years after MLK’s March on Washington, Black poverty rises from historic low under Trump

According to Census data, the African American poverty rate has gone up since 2019 and remained high during Biden’s presidency.

At the time that A. Phillip Randolph, Rev. Martin Luther King, and others organized the now-celebrated March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that under the Kennedy administration, more than 45% of “nonwhites” were living under the “poverty line.” The lowest-ever recorded percentage (and without the anachronistic nomenclature) of Black families living under the threat of hunger, crime and disease shrank to 16.13% in 2019 under the Trump administration.”

I am astonished at how sanguine the American people are about the CIA and FBI running psy-ops on the American people and controlling what we see and hear.

The nation I grew up in threw conniption fits over even a suggestion of a national ID. Any hint from the government about what could be published would be met with violent opposition from all quarters….and the left most of all, particularly academia.

I suppose that was the coup. Align with the academic left and they will throw in with you, bringing the rest along.

      • John Nerfherder

Don’t forget the DOD. Ft Bragg psyops division ain’t there just for show.

Just stroke the academic left’s ego and they’ll toss your salad every day.

      • Fatty Bolger

and the left most of all, particularly academia.

Yes, that’s the most disappointing part of it all. I remember seeing the transition in the late 80’s, you had old school liberal professors, who could be a joy to learn from even if you didn’t agree on everything, and then you had the “progressive” professors, who tended to be quite nasty, partisan, and vindictive.

  20. DrOtto

My dog revenge shits whenever we go on vacation. Even if we take him with. He only once did the eye contact thing while pissing in the house. “”I have been accused of harming people,” Peterson said in January in response to the demand, “(although none of the complaints involved in the current action were clients of mine, past or present, or were even acquainted with any of my clients.”

The complaints against him were not made by people who had direct, or even secondary contact with him or his clients.

Peterson said that the complainants were comprised of “about a dozen people from all over the world” who “submitted complaints” about his public statements, including those made on social media and during appearances on such podcasts such as The Joe Rogan Experience.”

With this comes covers and I kinda sorta know what I want, but I’m working with a dude who helped me with two other of my covers and he’s coming up with some good shit.

Now, here’s where I may need help. Isn’t there an all-silver/chrome/shiny 9mm out there somewhere? I can’t seem to find a picture of one.

“UK: Social Media User Warned By Police After Expressing Concerns About Man Who Dresses Like A Baby, Speaks To Children In Schools

On August 15, Gender is Harmful posted a multi-part thread on X (formerly Twitter) providing details about a man named Richard Smith, the head of an autism-awareness training group known as Awesometistic.

In the thread, the user noted that Smith had a concerning history of dressing like a baby girl as well as utilizing diapers, bottles, teddy bears, and other child-related accessories. While Smith claims he was “cruelly neglected as a baby” and uses these items as a method to “aid” his self-discovery, the behavior is more commonly associated with a fetish subculture known as the “adult baby-diaper lifestyle.””

What is happening with police “warning people” about social media posts? I couldn’t get them to stop a DUI hit and run driver when he was right in front of them. They told me to go to the station to get a form for insurance.

A second hit and run DUI caught on camera at a gas station actually got them to come fill out a report. They put my VIN number and the wrong date and time on a report. That is all. No description of the accident. No description of the criminal and his vehicle. No taking of the video evidence. Just an incorrectly filled out accident report.

But tweet about a potential pedophile working with kids… This they have time for.

      OK, Al. Whatever you say.

  31. The Late P Brooks

Organizers of this year’s commemoration hope to recapture the energy of the original March on Washington – especially in the face of eroded voting rights nationwide, after the recent striking down of affirmative action in college admissions and abortion rights by the Supreme Court, and amid growing threats of political violence and hatred against people of color, Jews and the LGBTQ community.

They should try recapturing the honesty.
