WebDom’s Weekend Links: Cryptid Edition

by | Aug 12, 2023 | Cryptids, Daily Links, WebDom’s Browser History | 162 comments

I am sorry to announce y’all are stuck with me this weekend. OMWC as been kidnapped to a nudist colony weekend of camping by his free-spirited NPR girlfriend and her short bus pet project. The vision of OMWC and NPR Lady frolicking nude in the wilderness is lightened somewhat by imaging Short Bus’ unparalleled camping technique of using marshmallows as tent pegs.

NPR Lady’s plans for OMWC this weekend include a hearty bong rip, interpretive dance, and leading him through a faery arch to his doom.

Wish I had known about this Central Valley PA Cryptid Fest sooner.

Heh…. like the Nessie Ladle (bonus points for a fondue set if they make them… Nessie Nestle nestled…), the “mess with people’s minds” posts and the comment on the statues to finish things off. I would have to agree with “spinsterprivilege”

Morning, WebDom — thanks for filling in which OMWC frolics. Morning and happy weekend to the rest of ya reprobates. Off to do another batch of mandatory corporate classes so I can make my manager happy and not impact my real work schedule. Yay.

    • Shirley Knott

English is so weird — shouldn’t it be ‘spinstress’?

    • PutridMeat

out of curiosity (and assuming your off on the weekend) – why would you spend time on that sort of thing off of work hours? Though we’re supposed to do nonsense like that, I normally ignore them and no one has bothered me. However, if/when I do have to do training (e.g. what passes for ‘IT security training’ – more like ‘don’t drool on yourself training’), I’m damn certainly only doing it on work time and making sure that management knows that x work will not get done today because I’m ‘training’.

But other than that, happy weekend! I’m off to polish and seal my concrete counter tops and start on the next cabinet build. I’ll try to avoid any cryptids that might be lurking in my bathroom.

      • SDF-7

Because I meant to do it yesterday, the other training I was going to do ended up eating the whole day — and I have real crap to do when the work week starts.

I’m salaried — so it isn’t like technically I’m ever off the clock. Just figured I could knock it out this morning when it was quiet. (See, Bro — this is the kind of crap you get salaried tech people into… we tend to be more into our jobs (because they’re cool… or we’re just ‘on the spectrum’ as they’d say these days) and lack work/life balance anyway… so WFH only helps productivity as we can focus better and do stuff like this anyway).

      • SDF-7

        TL;DR — “Because I’m nutty that way” 😉

I’m off to polish and seal my concrete counter tops…

Oooohhh. I plan to do concrete countertops in my kitchen this winter. Tips? What not to do? Article?

        Don’t spill vinegar.

I can write something up; not too many pictures as you’re working on a bit of time line once you start pouring. I currently have a ‘science’ article semi-finished (dust formation in the early universe – try to contain your excitement everyone), but will put something together on the counter top first.

SDF-7 – I too am salaried. And on the spectrum. I assume. And will definitely work on the weekends or put in 10-12 hour days. On my actual job. However, I will make training that I find ridiculous, insulting, and/or damaging to the institution or society at large, as painful for the organization as I possibly can. Up to, wrt to a ‘required’ harassment/bias ‘training’ telling what is effectively the top boss when he came to my office to tell me to take it, after some discussion about the philosophical issues, “OK, I want you to tell me right now that my job depends on my participation in this show; tell me that I will be fired if I refuse. Then I can balance the the values on both sides to me and make an informed decision.” “I can’t do that!” “OK, then I guess we’re done here”. They’ve never bothered me since. Watch, now that I’ve told that story, they’ll be in my office on Monday with a threat of firing and I’ll have to actually make that decision!

Good morning, (::takes deep breath::) SDF, Shirley, R.J., Ted’S., Tater, ‘slinger, 4(20), EvilS, and Sean! I “overslept” this morning, so I missed my habitual traditional pre-AMLynx greetings.

Is this a cicada year? I just knocked the dead carcass of some manner of big bug off the board I use to prop up one end of my lap desk here on The World’s Second Greatest Futon at Tranquility Base.

On second look, it may have been a junebug that forgot to change its calendar twice. Clearly past its “best by” date.

      • UnCivilServant

I have to get back to my painting of the statue. The base needs touch-ups. The crackle medium needs to be applied, then the gold, Then the toothbrush to produce the flaked gold effect. Once that is done, spray varnish the whole thing and start with the rust and grime effects.

      • Gender Traitor

That’s a lot of layers! Eager to see it!

      • UnCivilServant

Well, the chipping* medium has gone on the skin, sword hilt and torch. I’ve touched up the base, armor, and halo, and am waitinf ro that all to dry before putting the medium on anywhere else.

OK, you HAVE to love a title like “Midnight Mushrumps”! 😄

      • Shirley Knott

Let me know what you think. These are desert island disks for me 😉

      • Gender Traitor

From my very limited frame of refererence, “The Ploughboy’s Dream” reminded me of Fairport Convention (and/or J. Tull’s Songs from the Wood album.)

      • Shirley Knott

There are connections in spirit, at least. I’d say Gryphon took it further in a certain direction, but it was a territory several Brit bands were exploring. Steeleye Span, Egg, and others. (Love Steeleye Span. Maddie Prior has such a wonderful voice for the material they performed.)

      • Gender Traitor

I’m going to have to find one of the CDs my boss ripped for me some years back. It included at least one album of obscure (at least to me) British folk music-influenced prog rock, but the name(s) of the band(s) escape(s) me. I’m virtually certain I transferred the tunes onto a micro-SD card to play through my sorely-missed XMP3 satellite radio/MP3 player, but I don’t see copies here on my laptop. (Might be on the old one.)

    In more cryptid news:

“New species of sea monster with 20 arms is found lurking in the frozen seas around Antarctica

Scientists trawling on board a research vessel off the coast of Antarctica have caught a new undersea creature — one with 20 arms and a distinctive body, shaped a little bit like a strawberry.

The purpose of the researchers’ expeditions, conducted between 2008 and 2017, had been the hunt for ‘cryptic’ sea animals: a group known as Promachocrinus, or Antarctic feather stars.

Although similar to other invertebrate ocean animals, like starfish and sea cucumbers, feather stars are distinct both in their ‘large’ size and ‘otherworldly appearance’ when swimming, the researchers said.

The eldritch-looking horrors can live anywhere from 65 feet to about 6,500 feet beneath the ocean’s surface, where they found eight unique species on their mission, including four never before named by scientists.”

    Baffling tsunami of vitriol

According to the charging documents, Robertson allegedly told FBI agents in an initial visit that his flagged post described a dream, rather than serious intent. He reportedly demanded they not return without a warrant and went on to post that the bureau had “no idea how close your agents came to ‘violent eradication.'” Hughes says a significant number of individuals approached by the FBI in these cases say they’re unaware their threats violate law. “They just thought it was protected by the First Amendment, which on its face, people understand, that’s ridiculous,” he says.

Hughes says the rising number of arrests is due to factors including the ease of making public threats via social media, an increased focus from law enforcement on domestic extremism and what Hughes calls a cultural “mood music” that normalizes violent rhetoric.

It’s not just federal officials. A recent University of San Diego study surveyed local public officials in that city and found 75% reported receiving threats and harassment. Women, it found, are disproportionately impacted.

It is figures on the political right who are primarily fueling this hostile environment, says Katherine Keneally, a senior researcher at the nonprofit Institute for Strategic Dialogue, although their vitriol isn’t just directed against Democrats and public officials.

    ——-

“In many ways they don’t just wake up one day and say, ‘Yeah, the government is coming for me.’ That’s not what happens. They have had these narratives pushed to them over and over and over again,” says Keneally, by far-right media figures who profit from amplifying emotionally resonant narratives about both real and perceived struggles.

As a researcher, Hughes says he worries less for the president, who receives protection from the Secret Service, than for lower-profile public servants.

Blah blah blah vast right wing disinformation industrial complex. Thegreatest threat to this country is an army of people who resent what dedicated public servants are trying to do to help them.

    • The Other Kevin

I’m already seeing “if Trump wins democracy is over.” How is that kind of talk not instigating violence?

      • cyto

Uh, I’m pretty sure all the actual violence in 2020 at the behest of democrat politicians and activists, under the protection of democrat politicians, for democrat political purposes kinda puts the lie to the whole “we are super-worried about oblique dogwhistles that might instigate violence” thing.

If by conversation you mean a bunch of insipid moaning

Police in Montgomery, Ala., say that they have not found evidence that last weekend’s riverfront brawl — in which a large number of people squared off against each along racial lines — rises to the level of a hate crime.

However, a week later, people who have seen videos of the fight, including experts, pundits and social media users, remain divided: Some are saying race had nothing to do with the incident, while others say the footage clearly shows how groups divided by race.

What’s certain is that the incident has reignited conversations about race across the U.S.

As with most of this idiocy, I have studiously avoided reading anything about it. I saw one photo of some white guys trading punches. Maybe one of them identifies as black.

    • cyto

Worth reading. It contains everything you need to draw the conclusion that NPR is quite intentionally seeking to stoke racial hatred in america. (as if you didn’t already know this).

The story: somebody parked their boat at the launch of a city-owned riverboat tourist boat. When the riverboat arrived to dock at it’s appointed space, they tried for some time to get someone to move it. Failing to find anyone, they sent 2 guys from the crew to go move the thing. The guys from the pontoon boat arrived and a fight ensued.

      That’s it.

Now, how you jump from there to “racism on the rise! Hate Crime!” is a magical exercise.

Dude needed illegally parked boat moved. Dudes didn’t like someone touching their boat. Probably a few beers are involved. Dudes swing on each other.

There are no other elements needed. Every dude who has ever been a dude understands how this sort of conflict would escalate. Anyone who claims this is racism in action and needs to be treated as criminal racism is lying.

So of course, the Biden justice department is investigating it as a hate crime for federal prosecution. Because of course they are.

It’s not surprising that authorities have been reluctant to discuss race, says Christina Ferraz, a public relations consultant who specializes in reaching communities of color.

Public officials can be risk-averse on the topic because of its general divisiveness in today’s “culture wars,” says Ferraz.

“As this conflict may be identified as racially motivated, but not yet been charged as a hate crime, it can be considered slander and defamation of character for a public official to make a statement on the conflict without anyone being charged,” Ferraz tells NPR. “Public officials can be sued and this can negatively impact their brand reputation with donors and constituents.”

A public relations consultant who specializes in racializing the most idiotic and trivial interactions between people.

    • cyto

That was stunning to me. Her job is apparently to come in and make people fight about race. She must be proud.

Also, I have never noticed democrat politicians being reluctant to talk about race in any way. It is such a nonsensical statement. The entire democrat party has been talking about race as their top priority for the last few years, even promoting the looting of Target stores to secure racial justice. How do you write that and attach your name to the by-line?

“Left-wing media almost uniformly derided the anti-sex trafficking film “Sound of Freedom” as a QAnon exaggeration filled with conspiracy theories. But a series of recent busts by the FBI and child rescue operations by Texas troopers have undermined their argument….

The Guardian ran an article entitled “Sound of Freedom: the QAnon-adjacent thriller seducing America.”

NPR ran a headline stating “QAnon supporters are promoting ‘Sound of Freedom.’ Here’s why.” That article took aim at Caviezel, whom the author said “spout[s] QAnon falsehoods.”

Vox described the film as merely the latest in a string of motion pictures “tinged with hallmarks of the modern right-wing worldview: moral panic, hints of vast leftist conspiracies, and a sense of persecution.” It also parroted the accusation that “Sound of Freedom” pushes “QAnon-adjacent rhetoric.”

    https://justthenews.com/accountability/media/fritrafficking-busts-rescues-under-left-wing-narrative-q-anon-adjacent-sound

Even though leftist outlets have been soft-pedaling pedo shit for years, I did not expect fucking little kids would become a partisan issue.

    • cyto

I have not seen the movie, but I have seen several not-right-wing folks who have seen the movie talk about this, and they all say there is nothing in the movie tying anything to Washington politics, democrats, leftists or even American traffickers. Apparently it is all about an American working to stop trafficking of kids from Latin America to countries in Latin America by Latin American crime rings.

But….. they marketed it to Christians, and Christians liked it, and that mean they are literally Hitler. Oh, and Jim Caviezel is a christian who doesn’t like kiddie diddlers. So, well… you know. Hitler.

Also, this one time, he appeared at this one conference where some other people were there, and a couple of those other people maybe supported Q-anon. Maybe. So… obviously Hitler.

Oh, and the final admission? He is a Catholic, so he is opposed to abortion. I mean, need we say more?

I mean, a movie that stars an actor who has views not reflected in the movie but that people who are involved in politics share and those other people involved in politics sometimes have a the same views as a third set of people who might be kinda kookie…. well…. Kevin Bacon / Hitler game. Duh!

Formal hate crime charges haven’t been made, but observers like Derryn Moten, a professor of American history at Alabama State University, are blunt when describing Saturday’s attack: “I completely reject the idea that race had no part or played no part in that incident.”

To those who disagree, he says, “That’s not what my eyes saw, that’s not how my brain understood what I was looking at.”

Moten, who also serves as chair of the university’s Department of History and Political Science, says the fight took place in the area where enslaved people were brought in by boat on the Alabama River — and mere blocks from warehouses where they were held before being sold at auction.

More of that “My reality, my truth” bullshit.Your reality is defective, professor.

Or, you know, it could have been stupid drunks.

  22. The Late P Brooks

    To be sure

Of course, the cases are hardly equal in the context of the next presidential election.

There is no evidence that President Biden himself has committed any wrongdoing. Meanwhile, Trump has been charged in a plot to undermine democracy for his actions leading up the the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.

    Case closed.

    • cyto

The real story here – that is from the Associated Press.

Now, for those young folk who don’t know, the AP is an old-school news wire service that was known for sending out stories via teletype to papers and TV news departments, providing “just the facts” news stories from all over the world to news organizations large and small.

AP had hard rules for their reporters. They were news. Real news, free from editorial opinion. Facts. Quotes. Verified sources.

so the sentence “There is no evidence that President Biden himself has committed any wrongdoing. Meanwhile, Trump has been charged in a plot to undermine democracy for his actions leading up the the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.” is a stunning betrayal of everything the original AP stood for.

it is only editorial opinion, with opinions stated as facts, and opinions that are entirely unsupportable by facts. It is a lose-lose-lose of a sentence for the AP. Unfortunately, that is the new standard.

And the wonder why nobody trusts the press anymore. There was a time when the worst you could accuse the AP of was bias in which stories they chose to cover or not cover.

      • Gender Traitor

I remember doing the ol’ rip & read off the AP wire machine when I was reading the news at the campus radio station. Then there was the slower-than-molasses news day Fourth of July when the machine had a meltdown and printed only gobbledygook… 😳

I shudder to think of what passes for broadcast (or any) journalism education today. For me, it’s just another horrible career path bullet dodged.

      • cyto

Oof. Yeah. I was on the school paper, and after we won national awards I considered it. I went to UNC, which has a rather heralded journalism and TV production program. I worked at the Center for Public television there part time, and the ideals of a free press were attractive to me.

Wow. What a crap career choice that would have been. Unless you are telegenic enough to get an anchor job, that entire career path seems dead. And “ideals”? Even more dead.

There is a sliver of hope though. The Substack guys and the youtube/Rumble crowd are showing that there is an opportunity to make a living if you have a voice and some integrity. But I don’t know how many people that can support.

And yes, the knock-kneed gait with arms out to the side definitely projects an image of a special needs toddler trying to get to the ball and a sadistic lady repeatedly pushing him down.

But as a demonstration of what bipedal robots who have been trained to play soccer using reinforcement learning can do, it is quite impressive.

      • Grumbletarian

Until the robot is trained to scream in pain and hold its leg as if it were broken whenever it gets pushed over, it hasn’t been trained to play soccer.

“Hot Mess: 16 children died in scorching cars in 2023 even though tech exists to prevent such tragedy

Janette Fennell, founder and president of Kids and Car Safety, says automakers shouldn’t wait for a final federal regulation to be issued and add “occupant detection technology to their vehicles today”

Kids and Car Safety estimates that “more than 1,050 children have died in hot cars nationwide since 1990 and at least another 7,300 survived with varying types and severities of injuries.” The organization’s data shows that “approximately 87% of children who die in hot cars are age 3 or younger and the majority (56%) were unknowingly left by an otherwise loving, responsible parent or caregiver.”

In November 2021, Congress passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which contains a requirement that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issue a regulation before November 2023 for occupant detection technology in all new cars that would provide an “audio and visual reminder alert to check the back seat” as a way to prevent hot car deaths.”

““Kids and Car Safety is not supportive of systems that simply keep the vehicle’s AC running, like what Tesla has and calls ‘dog mode.’ There are several reasons for this. First, heat is only one of many dangers children face when alone in vehicles and allowing children to stay in vehicles alone increases other risks like power window strangulation, getting out and being run over because a driver could not see them, taking the car for a spin, choking on an object in the vehicle, knocking the car into gear, the vehicle being stolen, etc.,” said a spokesperson for the organization.

“We do not believe a system like this is a comprehensive approach. What we are pushing for instead is occupant detection and alert systems that can actually detect a living, breathing child inside the vehicle and alert the driver, bystanders, emergency contacts or even authorities,” the spokesperson added.”

“BREAKING! MI AG Dana Nessel CONFIRMS 8,000 to 10,000 Suspected Fraudulent Registrations Delivered to Muskegon Clerk October 2020, as Noted in MI State Police Report She Buried from Public”

    https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2023/08/breaking-mi-ag-dana-nessel-confirms-8000-10000/

“As reported earlier at The Gateway Pundit – Democrat operatives were caught in October 2020 in Muskegon, Michigan, a city of 38,000, dropping off 8,000 to 10,000 fraudulent voter registrations in a single drop. Many with the same handwriting and fake addresses. Police investigated (report attached) and found guns with silencers, burner phones, rental cars, and temporary businesses where registrations were stored.

All of these efforts were funded by Democrat campaigns to GBI Strategies. The firm in Muskegon was not only filling in bogus registrations by the thousand but they were also sending packages of registrations to nearby communities.

GBI Strategies was operating in at least 20 states and all of the battleground states.”

Social inequality and climate change are not naturally occurring disasters. It is no coincidence that those disproportionately impacted by climate change are the same people bearing the brunt of other crises fueled by corporate greed.

But these intersecting injustices are solvable. With sustained government policies we can transition our economy off of fossil fuels to renewables while improving society.

Take transportation, a core issue of environmental justice, as an example. The fossil-fueled transportation sector is the U.S.’s biggest source of emissions, responsible for thousands of premature deaths each year and billions in health damages.

Electrifying transit can solve this. Electric vehicles (EVs) reduce toxic tailpipe and traffic pollution linked to asthma, heart disease, and cancer. They are cheaper to fuel and maintain, saving consumers up to $12,000 on maintenance over the vehicles’ lifetime. As technologies advance, costs will lower more.

Love Big Brother. Devote your life to worshipping Him.

      Is that even true?

we can transition our economy off of fossil fuels to renewables while improving society.

“A transgender “man” who confessed to molesting autistic children at a therapy center where they were employed has been found dead in their jail cell.

At least one of the victims was still in diapers.

The deceased predator, Leomeir Kennedy, 31, was identified in court documents as a “transgender man” — meaning they were likely born female. Neutral pronouns are being used in this report because the biological sex is unclear.”

    • Gender Traitor

Using “they/them” pronouns in reference to the predator in sentences that also mention the children makes it seem as if the pronouns refer to the children. (One reason I don’t care for that usage.)

      • Common Tater

It’s silly. They should just call anyone who looks like that “he”.

  30. The Late P Brooks

The money is there. The US already spends about $20 billion every year subsidizing fossil fuels. And investments in clean energy will pay for themselves many times over by creating jobs and dramatically reducing energy and health care costs.

So what—or maybe better said, who—is standing in our way of progress?

Corporations controlling fossil fuel production and transportation created the climate crisis and are purposefully obstructing common sense solutions for the sake of profit.

    ——-

This decade is critical for action. Every fraction of a degree of warming prevented saves millions of lives, irreplaceable cultures, and trillions of dollars. Some corporations will stop at nothing — not even the self-evident harms of climate change—to line their pockets. The antidote is stronger government protections to stop this reckless money grab and secure our future.

You know what would fix this? A global socialist dictatorship.

  31. The Late P Brooks

Neutral pronouns are being used in this report because the biological sex is unclear.

Okay. Unless there are more than one, use “it”.
