IFLA: The “Rumpus” Edition of the Horoscope for the Week of September 24

by | Sep 24, 2023 | IFLA | 199 comments

A while back someone asked why some card/signs get longer more detailed or divergent-from-standard readings.  That is because of the age we live in.  Augurs have always needed a justification as to why we are so much more infallible than the typical Josephus Schmoe.  The two main and overlapping ways this is done is either to claim one has rare gifts/powers or that an entity with said powers is giving us the answers.  That latter form is of course, also known as a “medium” through which some other entity dispenses their wisdom.  The entity varies with the social proprieties — at one point you could claim that God or gods were speaking through you (Apollo at Delphi), or at least that they were sending you signs you could interpret (Roman haruspex).  But that became declassee, so we got to the era where mediums (not media) channeled the spirits of the dead, or of angels.  And when that lost favor, we got “cosmic” or “universal mediums.”  Now though the new hotness is the “intuitive medium” in which you channel your intuition.  This is completely different than just writing down whatever pops into your head for obvious reasons.

Obviously, the biggest news is the aftermath of yesterday’s equinox, where the Sun appears in the exact part of the sky necessary for the propagation of the pumpkin spice lifecycle.  But beyond that, Monday we get a crisistunity involving the waxing moon and Saturn retrograde.  The indications are that whichever choice you make there will be the right one, since we enter a time of balance/completion/perfection on Wednesday with Mars and Venus beginning their joint dominion.  And then Saturday the full moon brings good visibility at night, clouds notwithstanding.

Lots of reversed Majors this week. Not a good sign.

Virgo: 9 of Coins reversed – Roguery, deception, voided project, bad faith.

Libra: The Star reversed – Arrogance, haughtiness, impotence.

Scorpio: 7 of Cups – Distraction, sentiment, nostalgia, illusion, misreading, false hope.

Sagittarius: The Tower reversed – AIEEEEE!

Capricorn: Temperance reversed – Things connected with churches, religions, sects, the priesthood, Things connected with churches, religions, sects, the priesthood, disunion, unfortunate combinations, competing interests. disunion,

Aquarius: Knight of Swords reversed – Imprudence, incapacity, extravagance.

Pisces: 6 of Coins – Presents, gifts, gratification, attention, vigilance now is the accepted time, present prosperity.

Aries: Knight of Wands – Departure, absence, flight, emigration. A dark young man, friendly. Change of residence.

Taurus: The Devil reversed – Evil, fatality, weakness, pettiness, blindness.

Gemini: 4 of Wands – Country life, haven of refuge, a species of domestic harvest-home, repose, concord, harmony, prosperity, peace, and the perfected work of these.

Cancer: Queen of Cups reversed – Distinguished woman but one not to be trusted; perverse woman; vice, dishonor, depravity.

Leo: Page of Wands – Dark young man, faithful, a lover, an envoy, a postman.

Today’s music is one of the more underrated (though not completely unheard) of Jane’s tracks. Question: Do the tempo/mood changes qualify this as prog-rock?

Down here at the retail level of politics, there are significant and measurable differences between the parties. Up at the wholesale/administrative level, that’s not the case. There’s the uniparty, and nothing else.

  9. Gustave Lytton

From the ded thred. I was joking earlier but I wouldn’t be surprised if Newsom appoints Kamala to replace Feinstein. Solves his Senator promise, sidesteps the CA infighting. Someone takes Kamala aside, explains to her she’s never going to be president no matter what and she has the choice of either a long senate career (leaving her to fight CA peers) or a chance at a future SCOTUS appointment.

    • Suthenboy

Harris as a SC Justice is a very frightening thought. That would be a disaster on a massive scale.

She openly advocates for equity not equality. She has no regard for law or moral principle. I remember her arguing as state attorney general that she should not have to release prisoners eligible for release because the state needs their labor.

      • juris imprudent

She would actually make Garland look good in comparison.

    • juris imprudent

It won’t happen. Too much contention to replace Feinstein already – Newsom would implode the party in the state doing that.

Plus there is no upside for Harris. She will be President as long as she is a remora on Biden’s backside.

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

As I said in the last thread, she is in line to be the next POTUS, vs. a promise of a nomination to SCOTUS. She has already been a senator, so that ship won’t sail.

No, for good or ill, she ain’t going anywhere.

    • J. Frank Parnell

      Straightforward from here:

Biden resigns before the election, citing his desire to protect his family from the constant attacks by Republicans.
Kamala gets her name in the history books, but declines to run in 2024, deciding instead to spend time with her 8-figure book/Netflix/Spotify deals.
      Newsom/Whitmer 2024.

      • juris imprudent

OK – who’s the one managing that? [And the only reason Harris would opt out was if that 8-figure payment was a plata-y-plomo offer.]

Re this from the dead thread:

“They won’t try and run [Kamala Harris] versus Trump, she’d handily lose, even with fortification.”

I’m skeptical she would “handily lose” against Trump. She’s from a party that elected Biden and Fetterman, despite obvious mental deficiencies in both, and with Biden barely campaigning — voters who would elect a dead yaller dog over any R. The D candidate, regardless of who it is, starts off with around 220 virtually guaranteed electoral college votes.

The only question is just how much fortification in the seven or so swing states they could pull off with a really weak candidate. It’s possible they’re shameless enough to cart in millions of fake ballots if that’s what it takes to win, because how many poll counters went to prison in those swing states last time? Zero?

    /blackpilled

    • KSuellington

That was me. When I said “handily lose” don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean a Reagan/Mondale type blowout, that’s not possible these days. But it would be a Trump victory with larger margins than the last two elections. Which is why the Dems are not about to let that happen. If they can’t keep Biden propped up (and that is looking more likely with each passing week) it will in all likelihood be Newsom. That latest veto of the trans parental custody shit bill he was handed shows he knows it just might happen. Newsom beats Trump unfortunately. The other scenario is that Michelle runs and runs up a huge win against Trump. I don’t think she really wants the job at all tho, so I think that’s a pretty far long shot.

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

Its kinda like watching that old Seinfeld episode, “the Switch”. Trying to get Kamalamadingdong out, and while getting Newsome in is no easy task. She wants it, and was pretty much promised it when offered the VP slot, either explicitly or implicitly by using her to court the black vote. And kicking her out (no matter if she gets up there and says it was her idea to do whatever is offered) kills the black vote, as using inner party tricks stinks no matter the outcome. She was intended to be the first black woman, and that block will not pull the trigger for a turncoat, not after BLM.

Newsome may beat Trump, but in the same way that DeSantis beats Biden; all sizzle and no steak. Neither can get there without some miracle.

      • rhywun

She was intended to be the first black woman

The amusing thing is she is no “blacker” than Obama. OK, maybe a little since she did live in the East Bay before attending HS in Montreal but still. And the rich parents yada yada yada.

  18. Fourscore

My plan would be gentle. 10% cut in each agency’s budget. Anyone that can’t manage that gets fired. Following year another 10 % cut, same outcome. At that point the budget should be closing the deficit gap. If not another 10%. Bankruptcy or cuts, only choices left.

    • UnCivilServant

My plan would not be gentle.

Any agency without explicit consitutional justification would be dissolved and the employees barred from employment by any government at any level. The remaining agencies would see a 10% year over year reduction in budget with any director cutting core constitutional functions being fired along with their directors, with the same lifetime bar on public employment.

Eventually, the dead would will be burned away.

  19. Fourscore

Another win for the plaintiffs’ bar

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) on Friday said it sued United Parcel Service (UPS.N) for disability discrimination, alleging the delivery firm refused to hire deaf or hearing-impaired individuals as drivers.

The agency said the Department of Transportation (DOT) has authorized the practice of employing those individuals to drive vehicles weighing more than 10,000 pounds through a program that exempts them from a hearing test and instead uses alternative criteria to ensure an equivalent level of driver safety.

Atlanta-based UPS said it is modifying driver training for those who are deaf and hard of hearing and would start accepting exemptions to the DOT commercial driver hearing standard for operators of its ubiquitous brown delivery trucks in January 2024.

UPS said training is necessary because “current regulations do not consider best practices for driving larger commercial vehicles that make frequent stops in residential neighborhoods, or other significant factors UPS considers as it works to help keep its drivers and communities safe.”

The end cannot come soon enough.

Only two teams of fedbois, the rest were all local/state. If you ever have to get into a gunfight with a cop, choose someone from Glenville. Do NOT engage with South Glens Falls PD. Saratoga County Sheriff’s dept >> Montgomery County Sheriffs. Saratoga Springs PD fielded two teams, an official SSPD Pistol Team, and one competing under the name “Midnight Oil.” Three guesses as to which of them timed out. Which is even more disappointing since SSPD was in a gunfight earlier this year.

With the UAW on strike, tensions are running high and nearly everyone has an opinion about the union. The latter reportedly cost one dealership employee his job as they attacked the UAW on Facebook.

According to Automotive News, an employee at Michigan’s Suburban Ford of Ferndale made several disparaging remarks on a “Facebook page geared for UAW members to talk about contract negotiations.” These reportedly included “F*ck the UAW” and “… they want to work 32 hours, but get paid for 40 hours?”

However, their ultimate downfall appears to have been a comment saying “I work for a Ford dealership, so depending on how bad this gets, it could affect me.” Screenshots of the comments started circulating and the publication reports the employee was “let go” for violating their social media policy.

      • Fourscore

Don’t even have to be dancing. Mundane things like taking out the garbage can get a person, too.

    • Tres Cool

There’s a number of reasons why I don’t “social media”. This would be a great example of why my voice doesn’t need to carry to the interwebs.

Spent $600 something dollars on components to fix my PC….turned out to be the case power button…which I was able to replace for free with the power button from an old case. But the components I bought are an upgrade, so there is that I guess. 🤷‍♀️

  37. Brochettaward

Raiders never should have left Oakland. People didn’t like playing in Oakland. Steelers sure as hell never did.

    • rhywun

The amount of time they spent trying to convince us that Garafalo just loves Las Vegas was getting embarrassing.

      Nobody loves Las Vegas.

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

(my dads widow does, so I get to be there at least once a year. hate that place)

      • KSuellington

I don’t know about that. I think there’s a fuckton of people that love the place. It’s absolutely not my bag. Been there once and that was cause of a family bday party and I don’t really plan on going back.

      • rhywun

I meant love as is love living there.

It’s not my bag either way but living there? Ugh no way.

      • CPRM

I loved living there. Life had other plans though.

    Good evening/morning, gentlepeople.

I am lying awake in a hotel room next to a sleeping nuclear physicist/ pulsed power engineer. Thanks to him, I look and feel like a freshly fucked squirrel. Therefore, I am wide awake while he snores softly in the background.

Yesterday at work, while testing out a new pulsed power module, we found a technical problem. We think we know what the problem is and how to solve it. So Saturday night we placed a huge order from digikey for lots of stuff I’m going to need tomorrow in order to wire wrap a trial circuit to test our theory, prove our solution, and move on to large scale PCB design for the other 47 HV modules.

This counts as excitement for EE nerds.

It also allows me a chance to teach the younguns about the joys of wire wrap. It’s an almost a lost art, but I’m determined to pass it on to any acolytes who want to receive the knowledge.

I haven’t been this excited about work for at least 4 years.

    😊

    • Gustave Lytton

I ordered an electric wrap gun recently. Always used manual guns or (kill me now) hand wrappers. Fuck Jonard and their Chinese crap. I miss OK Industries. Still, the electric gun is great for bulk wire removal. Saves my wrists.

      • Gustave Lytton

Next you can teach them cable lacing.

      • hayeksplosives

        Ugh. I hate the guns.

I loved OK industries too. RIP.

Oddly, Radio Shack of all places carried a nice wire wrap tool (manual) but RS is going the way of the dodo.

The stuff I’m doing tomorrow/next week will be ok with hand tools. We just need to test our hypothesis.

But wire wrap is an art, and there’s a heckuvalot of it still installed out there. Even solder can’t compare to the bite of a wire wrap wire on those lovely square pegs.

      • Gustave Lytton

I think I’ve done too many to like it all that much. Now solder when it’s perfectly applied and wiped, that speaks to me. And the excess thrown off the iron onto waxed asbestos floor tile…

Next weekend the GL household will have a new canine member. Went and saw a litter today and picked the runt. Pictures in the future.

    Good morning all!
Well, after the deluge of rock/pop last evening I’m turning in a different direction — modern classical.

Today we have vocal glory, in part for GT, from Philip Glass’s Akhnaten. Tenor, mezzo-soprano, and soprano.
Akhnaten, Act 1 Scene 3, The Window of Appearances.

    Share and enjoy!

Good morning, Beau, Sean, and Roat!

It’s finally back to work today after my wonderful vacation. I wonder what joys and surprises wait in store! 🙄

Thanks for the musical selection, Beau! I only got to listen to a little bit of my Sunday morning choral music show as we barrelled down the highway from Toledo to Dayton, so now I can get my full dosage for the week! 😊🎧🎶

  42. UnCivilServant

    Morning, Glibs.

    Made it to the office.

    • Gender Traitor

      Good morning, U!

This morning, I’m operating on the assumption that the Windows password for my work PC that I have hidden in my phone is expired. I THINK I changed it from that before I left for vacation but failed to update it in my phone. I HOPE I have the new password hidden in my locked desk, but I assume my boss will have to enter my time in manually and I’ll have to go through the whole ritual for changing my Windows password again.

      • UnCivilServant

the whole ritual for changing my Windows password

  44. Sean

That’s so weird…the Shoutcast station I listen to just ran some ad in Spanish. I’ve never heard that on this station before.

    • UnCivilServant

      What were they selling?

      • Sean

        NFC

      • UnCivilServant

Then I have to assume it was Cheese and Fireworks.

        Don’t buy those. They’re a scam.

      • UnCivilServant

But these are Nina’s Fireworks and Cheeses!
