Regarding NLCS Game 7 today: One thing I noticed over the series are the number of people in the sports press that seem to believe thousands of Phillies fans paid a thousands of dollars to fly to Phoenix on less than a day’s notice to attend a ballgame and fly back the same day. While I am sure such fans with the income for such frivolous things exist, the obvious explanation is lost on them: they moved to the local area like damn near everyone in the state.
I’m done, whatever happens the loser is MLB’s TV revenue.

The big news over the weekend is the Argentine Election. Western corporate media is reporting this as an “upset” of sorts but its worth noting failing to upend a century of the Peronist version of national socialism in a single election isn’t an upset for the other side. NY Times also seems to conflate AnCaps with Trump for some reason and are citing Milei’s honest assessment of shitlibs as openly loathing shitlibbery as the reason he did not win as projected. I suppose that criticism while absolutely true, might be fair.
Elsewhere there is not one, but two hurricanes!
Venezuelans are the single largest nationality in border crossings. At least its not Hamas.
I assume Mexico’s Central Bank is as trustworthy as any other.
For the thousandth time….no. US gunmakers are not responsible for any violence in Mexico, you dumbfucks.
In any other circumstance, this might be a country song.
That, and Phoenix hasn’t been destroyed.
It can always rebuild itself, rising from the ashes…
I see what you did there.
I am impressed that people move there willingly. Definitely not for me. 😓
To be fair, they’re leaving Philadelphia.
Well, yeah. But to me that’s trading one hell for another.
Tammy? Who’s going to afraid of Tammy?
Don’t be Faye.
Why not be Faye?
Rob Swanson?
Ron, not Rob!! Why autocorrect would think that Rob is a name but Ron isn’t is beyond me.
Suck it up. I used to work tech support for 5 years as Mike because my real name wasn’t on the list of fake names and it was tiring to correct them.
“Venezuelans are the single largest nationality in border crossings. ”
I don’t blame them.
Like California Democrats, they got what they voted for good and hard.
it’s morally bankrupt of me to want this, but Californians should have to pay their per capita share of that state’s debt before emigrating
Maybe. You trust their vote counting? I don’t even trust our vote counting.
“US gunmakers are not responsible for any violence.”
FTFY
Disagree. Have you seen the Taurus Judge?
The Biden administration recently announced temporary legal status for nearly 500,000 Venezuelans who were already in the United States on July 31, while vowing to deport those who come illegally after that date and fail to get asylum. It recently began deportation flights to Venezuela as part of a diplomatic thaw with the government of Nicolás Maduro, a longtime adversary.
As long as we’re flying them back to Maduroland, can we give them each a couple of surplus M-16s and a few hundred rounds of ammo and tell them “clean up your own mess”?
Hey at least these people have a legitimate claim of asylum from hell.
‘”US gunmakers are not responsible for any violence in Mexico, you dumbfucks.”
Just to be sure, the FBI should send a bunch of illegal guns to Mexico and lose track of them. Somehow that will help.
My favorite part of that whole mess was Nancy Pelosi leading the Congressional Black Caucus out of the building like a bunch of school children.
Forgot about the Argentina election. They don’t want someone who at least might pull them out of their tailspin? Reap what you sow, amigos.
Wait, it’s a runoff? That’s not (necessarily) a defeat and I need to start reading the damn articles first.
No one reads the articles.
Can we blame them?
To be fair, I’m here for the witty repartee and in-jokes.
Also, fried chicken.
I keeping hoping Agile Cyborg will make an appearance. I miss that guy. No clue what he was talking about, but he was memorable.
I’ll take Hugh Hefner’s last words for $1000.
Yes. In order to avoid a runoff in Argentine presidential elections, candidates need either:
– A minimum of 45% of the vote
– A minimum of 40% of the vote and be at least a 10 point lead over the second place candidate
Neither Milei nor Messa met either of those criteria. Both polled in the 30s.
Correct. The guy who just dropped out will supply an ample amount of voters for Melei. He is most definitely still in.
“The candidate that markets liked the most — Patricia Bullrich, a right-wing former security minister — was knocked out of the contest on Sunday.”
Melei would need about 60% of the third place candidate’s voters to win, and then not have a huge wave of new voters / ballots come in for the ‘batshit insane fucking up the country’ party.
Which is another way of me being skeptical of Melei’s chances, perhaps because of how the Donkeys here seem to win an outsized proportion of tightly contested races and runoffs.
I hope Melei wins, of course.
“Javier Milei, a libertarian economist often compared to Donald Trump, will face off against Sergio Massa, Argentina’s economy minister, in a runoff next month.”
I am just wondering if there is any more reason to trust the polls there than there is here.
The worst countries are the ones where the polls are 100% correct, every time.
In other sports news, all 32 NHL teams are playing tonight. Game starts are all 15 minutes apart. That should be fun.
I was wondering why the Sabres are starting at “18:45”. What is up with that?
You just need another 31 televisions. Stack them up like Elvis.
15
Unless you want the home announcers for both teams 🙂
Ha when any of the 3 NYC area teams played each other I would have that choice.
On the same ice? I’d watch that.
Cool, they’re doing a NFL Red Zone type thing on ESPN2, jumping around the games.
And while voters are keen for change, Milei’s proposals likely spooked many.
“A lot of Argentines have a lot to lose from the dismantling of the social welfare state,” which millions depend upon, said Benjamin Gedan, director of the Argentina Project at the Washington-based Wilson Center.
The government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always count on the support of Paul.
Yeah if that phenomenon translates to the US in any way*, we are so fucked.
*Of course it does.
has proposed making it easier to own guns and sell organs, believes mankind’s burning of fossil fuels is not the cause of climate change, and said Argentine Pope Francis represents “evil on Earth.”

Are U.S. Gun-Makers Responsible for Violence in Mexico?
No.
Ted Galen Carpenter on the liberty movement’s pro-war Fifth Column.
Hitler was an AnCap. Everybody knows that.
This, from 5/18/18, might be the stupidest thing written in the last five years:
“Israel Makes the Hormones I Need, But I Support Palestinian Liberation
“A large part of the trans community in the U.S. is being forced to choose between our life-affirming transitions and our Palestinian siblings’ demand for freedom.”
I am an Israeli trans woman who desperately needs Palestine to be free. I need this because I refuse to accept that the massacre of peaceful protesters in Gaza is something that my people keep doing. I need this because I understand that trans liberation and Palestinian liberation are linked.
About 10 months ago, I figured out that I wanted to start hormone replacement therapy and in that way medically transition. There were many reasons for this decision, but one of them was the realization that growing up Israeli and trans in Jerusalem while being expected to become a Zionist man left an aftermath in my body. I needed help to heal, and sensed that growing a rounder, more tender body would help me connect with the justice-loving feminine child inside of me, and that having such a body would help me grow from that soft place.
I was already grounded in my anti-Zionist Israeli identity. After I moved to New York, I was thrilled to find how the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement allowed me to work in a non-violent and tangible way under Palestinian leadership to end the Israeli occupation of Palestine. Yet I still secretly wished for a moment that would alleviate me from the difficulties of my past. And I decided the moment of starting hormones would be it.
And so I waited until the Jewish new year to go to my pharmacy, and start that phase in my transition. I imagined the little ritual I would do while taking that first teal colored pill — new year, new Jew, new me. But when the pharmacy handed me the bottles with my medication, I looked at the label that read “produced by Teva Pharmaceuticals” and my heart stopped…”

Thank you for that. I needed a laugh.
Jeez, Louise. Pull your finger out of your ass and give your nuts a tug.
A goodbye tug?
I want this person to spend a day – hell, an hour – in Gaza and get back to us.
Idiot.

Continuing from the morning lynx…
Did I get this right?
University discriminates against white students and faculty for decades: university donors donate more money.
University ruins the reputation and expels male students if a female student regrets a hookup, even after many months: university donors donate more money.
University destroys women’s sports because some men claiming to be women are allowed to compete against women: university donors donate more money.
University doesn’t condemn a major terrorist attack in a foreign country on the opposite side of the globe: university donors are enraged and cut off the funds.
It’s pretty simple. Jewish >>> Woke
Voting patterns would seem to prove otherwise.
The donors were progressive Jews?
Yes.
That was just a bridge too far.
There is a strong “don’t genocide the Jews” social norm in the US. WWII probably had something to do with it.
Expressing sympathy with Palestinian children should not be a firing offense. But it happens. And it’s reprehensible no matter what feel-good social norm is out there.
It’s the “the Jews got what they deserved” is what’s firing up the donors.
I had something like this in mind.
I don’t know who that guy is. Did university donors get him fired? Because we were talking about alums cutting off their donations.
DIgging around, it’s a UK journal & the board is saying he’s been warned before:

Are U.S. Gun-Makers Responsible for Violence in Mexico?
Have they been sending mean tweets?
Washington —Republican Majority Whip Tom Emmer has dropped his bid to be speaker hours after he won a majority of votes in the GOP conference on Tuesday, becoming the party’s latest nominee for speaker, three weeks after Rep. Kevin McCarthy was ousted from the position in a historic vote.
Emmer’s internal election victory, however, was only the start of what was an insurmountable process to reach 217 votes, the number necessary to win the speaker’s gavel with only Republican votes. That path became more difficult after former President Donald Trump opposed Emmer’s nomination, posting on Truth Social, “Voting for a Globalist RINO like Tom Emmer would be a tragic mistake!” He said Emmer was “out of touch with Republican voters” and “never respected the Power of a Trump Endorsement.”
This is great.
I’m rooting against Republicans ever having a speaker.
After long and deep contemplation, at least 5 minutes, I’ve come to the conclusion that the speaker should come from the minority team, appointed or the loser in an arm wrestling contest. That way the speaker would control what comes to the floor but would need the majority support to pass. The minority party would have control via the speaker but nothing could get accomplished if the majority didn’t like it. Both teams would have to work together. If the speaker couldn’t work out compromises he could be removed by the majority party, same as now.
Then they might get something done, and I’m not sure I like the sound of that.
🙂
I was searching around trying to find a vote count to see if he had a majority as the story says, or just a plurality. NBC has a ticking clock that shows how long we’ve been without a Speaker of the House. What a bunch of bedwetters.
Didnt Belgium go about 18 months without being able to form a government?
Congressional Republicans have become ungovernable.

It’s like A’s games when they play the Red Sox or the Yankees.
I have a theory that Sox’s fandom is spread wide in part because we’re America’s Schoolhouse. A not-insignificant percentage of the country spent 4+ fondly remembered years here and became casual Boston sports fans during that period (assuming they didn’t have a rabid loyalty from their childhood elsewhere).
Yes, Massholes move all over the country, but a good chunk of them aren’t actually from here – they’re just assimilated Massholes.

I knew I’d gone native when I started drinking iced coffee year round.
A couple winters ago, we passed a guy in the middle of a heavy snowstorm, walking down the road completely bundled up, complete with ski goggles, with two giant Dunkin iced coffees in his hands. Proper New Englander, that.
See also the Bruins fans around the country. If the Bruins are firmly ahead in the third period, in many places you see more Bruins fans than the local team’s fans.
Yep. When I saw the Pats play the Cards In Arizona many years ago there was a huge Pats contingent.
I have a theory that Sox’s fandom
The Yankees are also very easy to hate.
Boston teams are easy to hate, too: their fans are disproportionately obnoxious.
Yes, but it was tolerable because they kept losing for a century.
They’re not even close to the worst.
You’d prefer Raiders fans? Philly fans? Yankee fans?
Me Philly fan.

It’s cute that the author think that’s not who the program was designed to help.
Re women having detailed plans and men not.
I realized that while I can go on loose plans here and there now, almost all of my detailed planning is because of kids. Kids’ schedules, work, groceries, errands, chores, whatever, all necessitate tightly packing your schedule so everything can get done. XY is 17 and yet my schedule revolves around his medical and work needs. If I can pack a few more chores in with his trips to the doctor or if I take him to/from work (weather), I’m going to do it in as precise/efficient a manner as possible, accounting for things like CVS being closed from 1:30-2:00p for lunch every day. Even my work day has always revolved around my kids. And now that my mom and aunts are getting to where I need to help them, yeah. My plans can get real detailed and precise real quick.
“CVS being closed from 1:30-2:00p for lunch every day”
That is so fucking annoying.
Could be worse; no Sunday pickups at Costco pharmacy at all.
I finally cut loose from DISH, after 23 years. The price kept going up, was $143 and we have nothing special, pretty much a no frills package. Our local TP company already has our internet @ 60 and local phone add on 10 plus all the taxes, charges, etc. I watch very little TV anyway, Mrs Fourscore does home shopping, cooking and Fox news.
Internet is fibre already. I’ll go tomorrow and see what the phone co has available for old people.
DISH started compromising right away, offering an immediate reduction but I’m tired of the games.
I guarantee any reductions required a contract of some duration too.
Yep and probably a lock in valid for only 1 or 2 years. As I remember that’s what I was on.
$143? Holy cow. I dropped them when it went to about $75. I miss some sportsball, but I’m probably better off not having it.
Same. Over the air and streaming is fine for me.
I was paying $220 in NYC for cable and internet.
Now upstate it’s $75 and the only thing I’m missing is the Tennis Channel and some other sports channels and random stuff like TCM and Game Show Network that for some reason is on a higher “tier”. But I get Comet now and I can live with that. The internet is wireless only but no problems with it so far.
A lot of those channels used to show soccer leagues that I liked to watch. So that tier was worth it some years ago. Since then, it’s all moved to pay streams. Not worth it any more.
Yeah; Tennis Channel and the RSNs for hockey are the only thing I really miss.
With a Roku box I’m able to watch Buzzr for my game show fix. Alex Trebek was so refeshingly snarky on Classic Concentration.
I still get the MSG channels, thank goodness. And it’s even better than before because I get all the Sabres games on top of the Rangers, Islanders, and Devils.
But yeah, no Tennis Channel hurts. I watched that a lot. I tried to sign up for TC+ but there is no app for TVs – only computers – so I had to get a refund.
Buzzr is another higher-tier channel I don’t get. (?!)
Is that the one with the rebus puzzles? I suck so hard at those.
I need to get you in contact with my MiL. Like her eldest son, she’s kinda good at gouging . . . er, screwing ove . . . er, getting concessions from her telco (which also provides her Internet and fibre TV). Her favourite come-on line when she cold calls ’em to bitch about something is “I’m old! Gimme free stuff!”
She’s got extra smart boxes, an entire freakin’ TV from another offer which she did not qualify for, and appears to be paying base rate (gets you 50 Mbps) for around 150 Mbps fibre. All free.
She terrifies me.
LOL
I’ve successfully used the “that’s x percent of my social security” whine several times.
Any TV stations around? Get an antenna and stream other channels.
I see what you did there

I’ll bring this up in the mourning lynx since this post is about to expire:
DeSantis orders two Florida universities to disband pro-Hamas student organizations.
The letter explains that it is a “felony under Florida law to knowingly provide material support … to a designated foreign terrorist organization.
“These chapters exist under the headship of the National Students for Justice in Palestine, who distributed a toolkit identifying themselves as part of the Operation AlAqsa Flood,” Rodrigues writes.
“Based on the National SJP’s support of terrorism, in consultation with Governor DeSantis, the student chapters must be deactivated.
Some First Amendment issues there, I would reckon. But DeSantis is a pretty good lawyer, so it might pass muster.
Hmm… I don’t like that. I despise Hamas. But they have a right to meet. I must defend that right to meet, so I must also have my right to form a group. See you in the morning links, homey!
If the students are free to form a different pro-Hamas group, and the current group is part of an organization funneling money to actual terrorists … this might pass legal muster.
I have some issues with the government getting to define who is a terrorist, since Hillary Clinton seems eager to call us that and throw us in re-education camps. The above is just a commentary on whether DeSantis’ ruling would get overturned under current law.
