Over by dere.

Hmmm. Looking around, I see a lot of derp out there in the world. Bad news abounds. But I will try to convey something other than just straight bad news…how a mixed bag instead?

  • Move those prescriptions somewhere else, Glibs. You will all end up at Walgreens or CVS…someday.
  • I would prefer stories like these stay out of sight…Illinois government does not need any bright ideas.
  • Heh heh. Um, I need to go to the Geldweschel and make a… transaction or two.

Still no musical inspiration, so you all will have to fill in. The comments are all yours.

There will only be Walgreens or CVS in the future. ONLY.

My local Rite Aid closed recently, so yes, I’m back at CVS.

    • Rat on a train

My local Rite Aid is a Goodwill now. It’s not the same.

      • UnCivilServant

Mine became a Dollar General. I went in there once. I’ve never seen less give a shit displayed in tossing product onto the display cases by an active retail establishment. It gave such a sleazy vibe that I’ve not bothered going back.

      • Rat on a train

Make the place look like it has already been looted?

    • rhywun

I had two; one closed a couple years ago and the other one locked up half the shelves. There were no competitors except a couple tiny indies that were mostly useless.

No mention of looting in the article – huh.

““We do not issue that placeholder as a threat to scare anybody into court, even if this person heard differently from somebody in our organization,” Peacock said in a statement.

“The programmers who designed the software used the largest number possible because super speeder tickets are a mandatory court appearance and do not have a fine amount attached to them when issued by police.”

The city has been using the new system since 2017, but is “working on adjusting the placeholder language to avoid any confusion.””

So it takes six years to get a computer to generate a letter that reads, “Show up in court”?

    • R.J.

It takes the GOVERNMENT 6 years to get a computer to generate a letter.

The euro (in actual monetary circulation since 2002) hit its all-time high against the franc in 2007 at CHF 1.7146. These were the days of the so-called “super-euro”, which according to its supporters was preparing to replace the dollar as the world’s reference currency. The subsequent global economic and financial crisis, later aggravated by the European sovereign debt crisis, sharply reduced the value of the European Union’s currency, reinforcing the franc’s role as a safe haven value.

The dollar exchange (informally known as the Dixie) has been on a tear recently as well, since the U.S. is also still seen as a safe haven. For now, at least.

I’d hate to be the currency trader the day that there’s a reversal. Imagine going home to the missus and having to tell her “My Dixie wrecked.”

    • Bobarian LMD

      Ba-bum tiss.

When I saw the million dollar speeding ticket headline this morning I assumed it was from whatever Baltic country bases their fines on ability to pay.

    • Lachowsky

Just give it another decade or so of inflation and all tickets will be in the 7 figure range. Don’t worry though. We will be able to pay them because we will all be millionaires.

      • B.P.

A really long time ago I was on the streetcar in Budapest without a ticket, because I couldn’t figure out their ticketing system. A uniformed dude came up and handed me a piece of poorly milled paper with a fine on it. The fine had a bunch of zeros on it, which freaked me out a little, but then I did the conversion math and it turned out to be about a buck fifty.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

        Nem tudom magyar.

“We will be able to pay them because we will all be millionaires.”
$500 per hour minimum wage should do it. If you can’t pay that, you shouldn’t be in business.

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

Don’t be ridiculous. $100/per hour would do fine. It is people like you who exaggerate the issues, and make a perfect world unachievable.

  9. Rebel Scum

I believe the idea is to bring down the US.

A group of 50 Syrian men crossed the Arizona border the other day, all of them without families.

How did they get from Syria to here? Who paid for their flights? If they are claiming asylum, are we to assume all of these military age men have no wifes, family, or children who would also want to claim asylum?

Why is no one asking these questions or putting a stop to this invasion?!

    A lot of Africans too.

    • Sean

      It’s absolutely fucking crazy.

    • Lachowsky

I wouldn’t worry about. There no reason for a bunch of Syrians to have a gripe with the U.S. We aint done nothing to them.

    • The Other Kevin

Well we only have so many intelligence agents, and most of them are protecting us from the greatest threat to democracy: parents at school board meetings and people who don’t like to wear masks.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

“How did they get from Syria to here? Who paid for their flights?”

Probably a bunch of NGOs using our tax dollars.

    • Tundra

Don’t look too carefully at the NGOs behind this shit.

The first mention of Lake City canceling commercial contracts is this reddit post. The OP claims he has a contact at the factory. Other posters claim they have contacts at the factory which dispute the news.

I am skeptical until I see something official from Winchester or one of the folks whose contract was cancelled.

      • DEG

Oh. I thought Drake’s link was the newer story at The Truth About Guns on Lake City cancelling commercial contracts. I’m still skeptical of the reports.

    Pretty please

Ford, who has been a part of UAW negotiations since 1982, pleaded with union members and leaders to work with the company, instead of against it, to reach a tentative deal to “end to this acrimonious round of talks.”

Such comments by the great-grandson of company founder Henry Ford are uncharacteristic during contract talks with the UAW.

    ——-

“The UAW’s leaders have called us the enemy in these negotiations. But I will never consider our employees as enemies. This should not be Ford versus the UAW,” Ford said. “It should be Ford and the UAW vs. Toyota and Honda, Tesla, and all the Chinese companies that want to enter our home.”

Billy Ford, grovelling to the union? Nobody saw that coming.

    • Sensei

Toyota wants to do anything but actually produce a competitive EV. They aren’t wrong here, but the spin from them is amazing.

Their hybrid tech is best in class so they naturally want to push that. After that it’s all smoke and mirrors – hydrogen and a yet to be mass produced super battery.

The one single BEV the make is incredibly uncompetitive in both power and range and since it contains batteries and components from markets deemed “evil” by Uncle Sam it is ineligible for any government handouts in the US unless it is leased.

I have a friend at Toyota R&D, and they have zero internal interest in doing an EV. And, frankly, I think they are on the right track with hybrids. EV’s are a solution in search of a problem, and cause far too many issues downstream: charging stations being the biggest, but also any peripheral needs, such as AC or heating.

ICE will be regulated out of existence, by a death of a thousand cuts in developed markets.

The only question is how long it can be delayed. The public’s standard of living and cost is not a consideration.

Hybrid tech works well at the cost of complexity, but it still has an ICE.

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

In the same way the left wanted to eradicate all traces of nuclear power, and yet they are still operating and some new ones are coming on line, I am not betting on the death of ICE.

      • Sensei

        I hope you are right.

In the US from memory only one new nuke plant in the past 20 plus years with more closed for a net loss.

  12. The Late P Brooks

UAW President Shawn Fain countered Ford’s plea by ratcheting up the pressure.

“Bill Ford knows exactly how to settle this strike. Instead of threatening to close the Rouge, he should call up Jim Farley, tell him to stop playing games and get a deal done, or we’ll close the Rouge for him,” he said in a statement. “It’s not the UAW and Ford against foreign automakers. It’s autoworkers everywhere against corporate greed. If Ford wants to be the all-American auto company, they can pay all-American wages and benefits. Workers at Tesla, Toyota, Honda, and others are not the enemy — they’re the UAW members of the future.”

We won’t be content until we have brought the entire industry to its knees.

      Seems that’s the case.

The U.S. will now offer families benefits and temporary legal statues in the deal with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) that was reached on Monday.

Thousands who crossed the border are now entitled to housing aid, work permits, health care and can restart their asylum claims.

Migrants who were deported or returned to their home countries can also return to the U.S. and bring relatives with them.”

We just had a Jihadist terror attack in Brussels, Belgium. A man who claims he is ISIS just opened fire on people in the city!

The man began shooting at people with an AK-47, even though guns are banned in Europe. So much for gun control.

We were warned that a Global Day of Jihad was coming and here it is.

Joe Biden should be ashamed. Trump worked so hard to eradicate ISIS from our world and Biden just brought it back in a major way!

    • Lachowsky

I wouldn’t say that Trump worked very hard at getting rid of ISIS. He basically just made the CIA quit funneling weapons and money to them and allowed the Russians and the Iranians free reign to kill them.

In response to the Hamas attacks on Israel, Big College President (former U.S. Senator) Ben Sasse said:

“In the coming days, it is possible that anti-Israel protests will come to UF’s campus. I have told our police chief and administration that this university always has two foundational commitments: We will protect our students and we will protect speech. This is always true: Our Constitution protects the rights of people to make abject idiots of themselves.”

    And right on cue…

  16. The Late P Brooks

I saw a version of that “$41,000 dent” story a few days ago. Very impressive.

But it looks so good in the showroom.

  17. Rebel Scum

    Clearly it’s a humanitarian organization.

Hamas releases its first footage of a hostage. The group says it is providing medical treatment to her. Though I think this is a poor attempt to show they are treating the hostages well. The hostage appears to be Israeli.

    Menace to society

Australia’s eSafety commissioner on Sunday fined X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, 610,500 Australian dollars, over $380,000 U.S., for failing to properly disclose information about how it polices child abuse content.

“Twitter/X has stated publicly that tackling child sexual exploitation is the number 1 priority for the company, but it can’t just be empty talk, we need to see words backed up with tangible action,” Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said in a statement.

X has 28 days to respond to or pay the eSafety office’s fine.

It’s a relatively small price tag for the multibillion-dollar tech platform, but it represents another nail in the coffin for a company that has come under fire for its content moderation practices, especially after it was acquired and rebranded by Elon Musk.

Australia issued the fine under its Online Safety Act, introduced in 2021. The legislation requires online service providers to report how they crack down on child abuse content on their platforms. Under that law, companies can face civil penalties for failing to meet that reporting requirement.

    Another nail in the coffin.

I wonder what constitutes child abuse content.

Lots of hot takes out there about the ME shit.

    This is a terrific discussion.

Two guys with a lot of knowledge and experience. Jocko’s thoughts on the information ops is really interesting and something I didn’t really think about.

For those still in the “glassing” phase of solution-finding, the guys lay out a pretty good argument about why that is exactly the wrong thing to do.

There is no good solution here and it’s nice to finally have some sane voices acknowledge it.

    • The Other Kevin

Thanks. At your recommendation I listened to the first one, and I’ve been watching for part 2.

      • Tundra

It’s generating plenty of butthurt, naturally, but you can’t even begin to understand until you learn the fucking history.

      • Lachowsky

Nah. No need to learn anything. History started last Saturday. Glass the place. Turn it into a parking lot. There are no innocent palis. Kill em all.

      • Beau Knott

There were no innocent Germans in Dresden, nor innocent Japanese in Tokyo, Hiroshima, nor Nagasaki, either.
Innocents have already died in their thousands on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I’m tire of the “but the innocent…” pseudo-argument. It accomplishes nothing, it moves no one closer to a solution.
        War is Hell

      • Tundra

So, my kids are fair game for the war crimes my country commits? Come on.

Dude, that is a seriously fucked up take. If Israel attempts what you prescribe, they are over.

        Listen to the podcast.

      • Brochettaward

I had a long winded post on this subject that was taken by the squirrels.

Long story short, Israel is being restrained and constantly resorted to half measures against Palestine. The Palestinians are a conquered people who are, quite cruelly being left just enough freedom to suffer endlessly. No one wants to deal with them to include their Arab neighbors and that’s the crux of the matter.

Israel shouldn’t have to exist under a constant threat of violence. I’m no advocating for genocide, but the full conquest of Palestine and those Palestinians who don’t like it – move the fuck on. Try your luck going to one of the neighboring shitholes.

There is only one long term solution to the Palestinian question, but we live in a world where you can’t speak it aloud.

      • Brochettaward

And there is a special place in hell for the Europeans who condemn Israeli actions. Israel only exists because of Europe’s fetish for massacring the Jews periodically culminating in the Holocaust.

Israel shouldn’t be prevented from doing what is necessary for its security because it offends the social mores of Europeans. Or because of the faux tears of its Muslim neighbors who use the entire conflict as a form of propaganda while basically fucking over the Palestinians.

      • Brochettaward

If you are Israel, you have no reason to support a two-state solution let alone a one-state solution. Does anyone really think there will be peace with the Palestinians just because they’re recognized as a state?

One-state solution isn’t even something worth discussing. Israel will never allow it and can’t ever allow it. Nor should they. It would be suicide.

So what you get is this quaisi holding pattern where Palestinians are left to suffer. Israelis are left under the threat of violence while slowly encroaching and occupying more and more Palestinian land. Just fucking end it.

It wont’ happen. In the modern world, the global left and our top men would never allow it to happen. But it’s exactly what needs to happen for both sides and both people to move on.

      • Tundra

That’s the part of this that annoys me to no end. The only solutions ever brought to the table are obvious bullshit. “Palestine turned down the chance for a solution”

No, dumb fucks, each side is asking for stuff that the other wouldn’t grant in a million years.

The best thing that could happen is a gradual absorption of the Palestinians into other countries in the region, but as you so rightly point out, those other countries benefit from having the Palis in a terrible spot.

This is fucked. We are going back to war, and after it’s over this will still be a problem.

      • Beau Knott

No, your kids are fair game for acts of war should the US be in one (yet again).
Hamas declared war on Israel in its founding document(s).
Everybody fucked up there, from the beginning. There is no blank slate from which we can reason our way to an ethical solution. There are no good guys. But one set of bad guys is considerably better, in every respect that matters, than the other.
My ‘prescription’ carries less weight than a sparrow’s fart. As do the opinions of everyone else posting here, taken jointly or singly.
But I’m sick to death of the “innocent people” pseudo-argument. It is the worst sort of faux moral posturing indulged in by people with no skin in the game.

      • Brochettaward

The what-about-the-innocent argument regards to Palestinians…it’s just asking the Israelis to fight with kids gloves like we have in our wars and it’s just…it’s just unrealistic.

It was a mistake how we fought in Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq. War propaganda should aim to convince people you are in the right, but you shouldn’t let that delude you into thinking that you really are any different than the other side and just fighting for your own interests at the end of the day. Don’t buy into your own bullshit. America has bought into its own bullshit to a large extent.

Israel doesn’t need American help outside public support and getting the hell out of the way. Israel shouldn’t constrain itself because of what some Europeans might think.

And libertarianism has no place in this argument for me. We don’t live in libertopia. We live in a world of nation-states acting in their own self-interest.

As an American, the only thing I really care about is whether America is acting in its own best interests. And I think for too long the Israel-Palestine conflict has been a prestige issue for our top men. From Clinton t o Trump they’ve all tried to make history and solve the issue by forcing some solution down Israel and Palestine’s throats. We are in no position to do so.

      • Ted S.

That’s the part of this that annoys me to no end. The only solutions ever brought to the table are obvious bullshit. “Palestine turned down the chance for a solution”

And yet people here say the same thing regarding Ukraine.

      • Lachowsky

There were a shit load of innocent people in Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki.

The office also noted that Google has been issued “a formal warning” for giving “generic responses to specific questions.”

However, X received an official fine because its failure to comply with Australia’s reporting standards was more egregious, according to the commissioner.

For example, the company did not provide information on how long it takes to respond to child abuse reports, how it detects child sexual exploitation on its platform and how many safety and public policy employees it has.

We need to see official expressions of concern and the appearance of action.

I don’t give a fuck about your rant not giving a fuck.
      Also hello.

It really just encourages me to share my unrealistic hope that Israel actually does turn Palestine into a fucking parking lot (after giving all the Palestinians who don’t want to be martyrs for the cause enough time to evacuate, of course).

I’ll try to sneak this past the skwerlz-

The US can afford to give money to both Israel and Ukraine since its economy is doing ‘extremely well,’ Janet Yellen says

We’ve got all the checks we need.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

Economy is doing real well as long as you don’t need to buy food or gas or pay for electricity or insurance…

      • Lachowsky

You should see what has happened to industrial supplies. Electric motors, PLC cards, hydraulic pumps and valves, copper conductors, switches, and the like.

Our maintenance costs has damn near doubled keeping this place running since 2019.

Attention Texas and Texas-Adjacent Glibs: Trashy is in DFW from the 18th-25th of this month. Let me know if you want to meet up, I can set a time.

Bump in the road to Utopia

    Offshore wind is in trouble.

New York state regulators dealt a serious blow this week to the industry’s financial picture, and that could hamstring President Joe Biden’s clean energy goals, writes Benjamin Storrow.

The New York Public Service Commission, which oversees the state’s electric utilities, rejected a bid by offshore wind developers to recoup more money from customers to account for inflation.

    ——-

The decision imperils 4.2 gigawatts of offshore wind power in New York. Project costs have ballooned amid rising interest rates and supply-chain bottlenecks, and that’s sent developers scrambling to renegotiate power deals.

Projects off the northeast Atlantic coast are central to Biden’s goal of building 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030 — enough clean energy to power 10 million homes and slash planet-warming pollution by 78 million tons by decade’s end. Now, roughly a quarter of the power needed to reach that goal will likely be delayed several years or canceled, Ben reports.

I love how they talk about this as if it’s real.

    • Brochettaward

By the time 2030 roles around, no one will remember Biden promised anything at all. Like all the green predictions and promises, it’s utter nonsense.

…it’s also tough to compare Harris’ trajectory to that of, say, Joe Biden and not conclude that at least some of the problem is racism and sexism.

So the problem is the racism and sexism of DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY VOTERS. Got it.

Man I don’t know if I can eat that much popcorn.

    • Sensei

Well, they both likely do have the same room temperature IQs…

    • Brochettaward

Democrats are pretty racist when you talk to them one-on-one.

I think DeSantis should claim he is a victim of sexist and racist republican voters.

Youtube has escalated the war on ad-blocker further. It went from a warning that you could bypass by refreshing to they swear they are going to cut you off after 3 videos. I haven’t tested it to find out.

I will calmly go over to Rumble, you fucks. Not because the ads are such a bother, but because you hate me and I don’t want to support you.

    • R.J.

Rumble needs more cat videos. Otherwise it’s perfect. Youtube has yet to threaten me while I use Brave.

      • Brochettaward

It’s certain videos. The ones it classifies as Youtube TV. Something the creator of the videos has enabled maybe.

      • R.J.

Interesting. I hate YouTube yet still find it useful. I would like to discard it. This would be a reason.

      • R.J.

Aw dammit, I said the word.
        *drinks

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

        Yeah, seems fine on Brave.

    • Tundra

I’ve just been closing their stupid notice and it works fine.

      How’s Rumble’s music library?

      • kinnath

It now has a timer. You can’t close the warning pop up until the timer expires.
