Gettin’ down on the Big Wood.

It’s October, so that means fall trout fishing. I went over to Sun Valley and fished Silver Creek, which in the fishing world, is a world class mecca for fly fishing. I now understand why it’s said that if you can catch trout on Silver Creek, you can catch them anywhere. An amazingly technical stream to fish. That’s the picture on the front page. While I was fishing, I was listening to hen mallards quacking, and bull elk bugling. A spectacular location.

Above is the Big Wood, that runs through several towns. This spot was about five minutes from my hotel. Also technical, but not to the level of SC.

Links?

Yeah, there’s going to be some explaining to do.

Who had Ecuadorean Shrimp Bandits on their bingo card?

Speaking of Ecuador. MS-13 sends a message to Colombia “we’ll kill our own politicians, thank you”.

It will turn out that (((they’re))) behind it.

“I’m not cranking the hog in public. I’ve been hacked!”

Okay, which one of you has a left foot fetish?

That’s it for me. Time to get some yard work done before watching Boise lose to San Jose State.

Israel will need reinforcements in this war. President Biden should follow President Nixonā€™s example from the Yom Kippur War when faced with another surprise attack on Israel fifty years ago this weekend: send everything that shoots on everything that flies.

    • Aloysious

      WAR ENSEMBLE.

      So eager.

    • R.J.

Biden will do nothing. He paid Iran to attack Israel, and now he will sit on his hands because his masters want him to.

      • Robonerfherder

I’m trying to figure out the incentives in this for Hamas and Iran, but I can’t come up with anything that really makes the case. Hamas is not going to win, they have to know that. Gaza is going to be destroyed.

        So who benefits?

Seems to me that the warmongers have been on the defense lately, so much so that they lost a key player in keeping it all going in the House. This comes at a huge political moment in the US when a new Speaker is selected and you can guaranfuckingtee that the candidates will be forced to weigh in on the conflict when emotions and grandstanding are at their worst. Who can simp hardest for Israel in their time of need?

And I have reason to believe that we knew this was coming. I won’t elaborate further on a public forum.

      • R.J.

You wonā€™t have to. It will be all over the news in a week or two. I am remaining as stoic as possible. I cannot change it.

      • Ted S.

How did the US get Hamas to attack?

      • Robonerfherder

How do you get an idiot to do anything? Because this was idiotic. Hell if I know. How does Hamas benefit? How does Iran benefit? I see no upside for them whatsoever. This is going to throw the entire Middle East into complete disarray as everyone jockeys around the biggest hot button issue there is over there.

I’m just not buying that nobody knew anything. The operation is too large and located on the tensest border in the world next to the DMZ.

      • Robonerfherder

I take that back, there is one upside for Iran and the Saudis.

Oil prices are going to spike.

      • Ted S.

Your comments all day have been coming across as suggesting that the US is somehow responsible for what happened today and caused it.

      • Robonerfherder

Iā€™m saying that Hamas simply being stupid and evil is not a sufficient explanation.

Iā€™m saying that thereā€™s no way nobody saw this coming.

        Now Iā€™m asking who benefits.

      • Suthenboy

        Somehow?
We funded it. Give a wino money and they are going to get drunk.

As for those of you wondering who benefits….there may be internal affairs in Iran at play here. Kill the evil Jews has been used ad nauseam to distract muslim populations from the horrible tyranny they suffer under their own govts.

      • Suthenboy

Remember when Obama gave Iran palettes of cash in Euros to hide it from American Taxpayers? Much of that money was used to kill Americans in Iraq.

Dont underestimate the radical left’s hatred for this country. No matter how unbelievable it may seem on the surface their actions reveal their preferred preferences.

      • MikeS

They have consistently been this level of stupid and evil.

Yeah, I think the 50th anniversary was plenty good enough reason for them. They don’t need some 3D chess “benefit”. They get to kill a bunch of Jews on a special day. That’s it.

      • Gustave Lytton

What does Hamas get? Chance to kill Jews and bloody Israel’s nose on a milestone anniversary. We’re still here and relevant despite peace deals. Also, we’re not Iran’s bitch, we can attack whenever.

      • Chafed

Hamas is a death cult. Understand that and you’ll understand what follows.

      • Threedoor

        All the rock worshippers.

      • Suthenboy

        Yep. Pure fucking evil.

    • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

Given that there is a huge division in Israel right now, and it is one that matches up with the split going on in all of the west; internationalist vs. nationalists. This has been playing out in Bibi’s push for change on the high court, making it accountable in some small way to the rest of Israeli politics much as ours is, and I would bet dollars to challah that the Mossad is made up of exactly the same types of people who make up the CIA, namely upper middle class kids who think Hamas are just a bunch of fun lovin’ criminals, and no real danger. Hence, the major fuck up, as unlike most of our international boondoggles, this one isn’t just poor kids, but all Jews.

As far as why now? A chance to kill Jews for Hamas, and Iran isn’t really going to get hurt in it. They are already under massive embargo, so nothing new there, and if they get to be the ones who pull Hamas back, then it’s a win. Let’s see what the next few days brings.

      • Rebel Scum

Does Israel even do oil embargoes?

      • Suthenboy

They dont need one. They supply all of the electricity and water to the Palestinians. All they have to do is hit a switch and turn a valve.

      • Rat on a train

Attacks on symbolic dates happen, but it seems they are not a trend. 9/11 has no significance in the Islamic calendar, but it is the date when the siege of Vienna was lifted. That was in 1683, and it was the last time a Muslim army attacked a European city. It was the high-water mark of the Ottoman Empire.

    ***
Certainly, both terrorists and those charged with security think more about these dates, but do more terrorist attacks, in fact, occur on them? To answer this question, we looked at the distribution of terrorist attacks in the United States from 1970 to 2013 by date to see if certain dates stood out. Only a few of these dates (in bold) appear to have any possible symbolic significance. At least one attack has occurred on almost all calendar dates (352 of 365). The average number of attacks on any calendar date is just under five (mean = 4.8, standard deviation = 3). Nineteen calendar dates (those listed in Table 2) have experienced ten or more events. The days around Independence Day (July 2 and 4) and New Yearā€™s Eve (December 31) each experienced an unusually large number of attacks. On each of these dates, communities hold events that draw large crowds, which raises the threat of terrorism by creating potential soft targets. Furthermore, any event that draws a large crowd requires increased security for public safety reasons.

As for the question of an intelligence failure by the Israelis, I suspect Hamas knows enough now to avoid electronic communication. It’s also possible they prefer to spend their money on weapons rather than commo gear.

I just need to find a time to explain to the wife that waiting her boss out, who is hungry and will move on in a couple years, is the way to go. That, or start going into the office, sending at least an occasional email past midnight, and generally making it look like she is still eager to move up. But, the wife wants it both ways. If Footmen Tire You, What Will Horses Do? warns of the dangers facing the United States from Communist infiltrators, interspersing scenes of Pirkle preaching with vignettes depicting the violent persecution of Christians in a near-future Southern United States under a totalitarian Communist regime. The film suggests that the only way to avoid the violent repression of such a future is for the youth of America to abandon vices such as violent media, dancing, and sexuality, and turn to evangelical Christianity and conservative American nationalism.

Food for thought: Russia and Palestine

    ***
Russia was one of the countries that voted in 1998 to give Palestine more rights at the UN despite opposition by both Israel and the United States. With his accession after Arafatā€™s death in 2004, successor Mahmoud Abbas has cultivated stronger connections to Russia. Underscoring these connections, Abbas had earned his degree at the Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow where he had earned his Candidate of Sciences degree[12] (the Soviet equivalent of a PhD). Abbas has continued to visit Russia and has met with Russian leaders in several occasions.

In March 2006, after Hamasā€™ surprising win in the Palestinian elections earlier that year, Russian-Hamas talks began, as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal to discuss the future of the Israeliā€“Palestinian peace process.

Russia was critical of the Gaza War (2008ā€“09) and condemned Israeli actions.[16][17] In addition to 60 tons of aid consisting of tents, medicines, and foods, President Medvedev ordered extra humanitarian aid to be sent to the Palestinians.[18][19] Russia continues to support the creation of a Palestinian State to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East.[citation needed]

Palestine has separate governments in the Gaza Strip (Hamas) and the West Bank (Fatah) after a brief civil war in 2007. After a meeting between the Foreign Minister of Russia Sergei Lavrov and the Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki (Fatah) on December 9, 2009, both Russia and Palestine have said that their relations are close and friendly and that Russia will continue to assist Palestine in all fields.[20] On January 26, 2010, Mahmoud Abbas met with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to discuss the situation in the Middle East. He said that while some progress has been made on peace, it is still not solved yet. President Medvedev said that he hopes to use Russia’s influence to solve the Middle East conflict. He also mentioned the long-standing, friendly and deep-rooted ties between both Russia and Palestine.

I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if Hamas discreetly asked for Russia to give them a green light for this latest war.

    • Chafed

Russia funds Hamas. I doubt they were informed beforehand. I also doubt they care.

    • tarran

One prospect gives me pause. If Israel were to seek a final solution to the Hamas problem, Tehran could use the death toll of women & children as justifying nuclear bombardment of Israel.

The leadership of Hamas & Iran have to expect a ferocious response to their atrocities. So they desire this reaction.

      • Threedoor

Which one of you have the 23 and me data?

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

If Russia was asked for a green light I’d think they’d say hell no because the consequences of being found out would be so dire because it would provide an ironclad pretext for western direct intervention in the Ukraine. As for the nuclear bombardment of Israel, Iran doesn’t have nukes. The simplest answer is the Palis hate the Israelis, not without reason BTW, and they managed to pull off a hell of a surprise.

Due to the ridiculous hours at work and the stress of dealing with life in general, my epilepsy is working overtime. Had a seizure while driving today and totaled my Tesla.

Could have totaled myself, but the car took it for me. No recollection of any of it. Concussion, all day in hospital, scans, etc.

Then when I was released from hospital I realized my apartment keys were in the car! So I had to take Lyft to the impound lot and fetch them out through the smashed windshield. First I saw of the damage. Iā€™m lucky to be alive.

Kitty cat was happy I finally came home,

      Yikes! I’m glad you’re okay!!
Take care of yourself, get some rest, try to have a day off today.

Glad you made it out okay. Sounds like a terrifying experience.

I hope your recovery goes well.

Damn! Glad you are OK. Sorry about the car, but that can be replaced.

    Good morning all!
    Something a little different today.
Bach’s Passacaglia and Fugue in c minor is one of the greatest works of Western music.
I knew this, abstractly, but simply couldn’t get my head around it. Then I heard E. Power Biggs play it on pedal harpsichord and I ‘got it’. The organ performances opened up to me, and I’ve been a passionate fan ever since.

So, E. Power Biggs Bach’s Passacaglia and Fugue in c minor on pedal harpsichord

    And on pipe organ

    Share and enjoy!

Day 3 of camping. Of course today has the nice weather, but it’s time to pack it in.

Yesterday afternoon was too hot to do much and the nearby ‘River’ had dried up into a puddle. :/

Last night, my son tried to start a forest fire (not really, but he did manage to start a bunch of pine needles going). That was…. interesting. Ready for a bath and his mother to look after him.

    Morning, Glibs et al,

Hayek, sad to hear about the seizure, glad to know you are OK, within limits. The car can be replaced but you, irreplaceable.

Good to hear Smokey the Bear was with you, Lack.

All is well in the woods, got the furnace chuggin’, coffee in hand.
