Friday Morning Links

Here comes the BOOM!

I’d say the Bengals season is probably done after last night. The F1 practice session in Vegas turned into a clusterfuck due to a loose drain cover.  And after all the bluster, Jim Harbaugh and TTUN dropped their action against the Big Ten and he will serve the three game suspension levied by the conference, which is his second three-game suspension of the season. Now THAT’S what I call targeting. And that’s it for sports.

I’m shocked! Shocked, I say.

“Fuck the taxman.”

He picked a hell of a venue. I shouldn’t be surprised.

Nice headline, you scumbags. Remember, friends: how ever much you hate the mainstream media, it isn’t nearly enough.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!  FUCK YOU, NO!

“Demented and sad, but social.”

Funny or sad? Wait…why not both?

They didn’t see this coming? And how can they prioritize something that isn’t written into the law? Oh, it’s government so they can do whatever they want.

The beatings will continue until morale improves. This is what a government-imposed monopoly does. Enjoy it.

This is fantastic. Sorry for their trouble, but maybe they should have cared about the students before the failed so miserably in instructing them.

This song doesn’t waste any time. What a great track. As is this one. Enjoy them both.

And enjoy this lovely Friday and weekend, dear friends

The F1 practice session in Vegas turned into a clusterfuck due to a loose drain cover.

Huh… I haven’t been watching the practice sessions — I remember a drain cover came up in a race once and I think destroyed a car.. Malaysia back in the early ’10s maybe?

Trying to find it… God, web searches suck these days — “F1 race” should preclude the Vegas practice session news feed, assholes…

Not finding quite what I remembered — but this might be it… later than I thought.

    I forgot about this one.

Vegas should be happy to be an official F1 session now….

    • Ownbestenemy

Mrs OBE still in Vegas and says it has been a complete clusterfuck anywhere on and adjacent to the strip.

      • SDF-7

Yeah, like Athens (GA) when the Olympics came to town (spill over from Atlanta), if I lived there I’d damned well find somewhere else to be this week and into the next, probably. But I hate crowds and all, so that’s not surprising.

      • robc

ATL was surprisingly empty during the Olympics. Those that stayed had easy commutes for 2 weeks.

    • rhywun

      web searches suck these days

Yeah, ever since they started trying to read your mind instead of looking at what you actually typed.

    • DrOtto

I was in Vegas 2 weeks ago for SEMA and one of my favorite gambling holes is Ellis Island on turn 4 of the Vegas circuit ($5 craps table!). 2 weeks ago I was wondering if they were going to be finished in time. They had a lot of work to do yet. And the traffic, worst it’s ever been to get to what should have been an easy destination since it’s off strip.

      • Nephilium

I was a bit upset to learn that Ellis Island closed down their brewery. While they weren’t the best, they were a decent, inexpensive choice while off strip in Vegas.

      • R.J.

Does that mean your $5 craps table is now $20 for the duration?

    Nice headline, you scumbags.

Paul Kessler, 69, died Nov. 6, one day after he fell and hit his headduring a confrontation at dueling pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Thousand Oaks.

Technically correct is the best kind of correct.

    • WTF

Except his “fall” was caused by being smashed with a megaphone, so not even “technically” correct, since he was knocked down by his assailant.

      • Nephilium

“First! I’m going to hit you… and you’re going to fall down.”

If the roles were reversed the Jew would be charged with a hate crime.

      • Nephilium

Local news had a feel good story about a guy who called in a hate crime, claiming he was walking down the road, minding his own business when a car came by, yelled anti-Palestinian slurs, shouted pro-Israel slogans, and tried to run him down. CAIR of course jumped on the initial claim, and held it up as an example of the growing anti-Muslim bias in America.

The feel good part comes now… fast forward about a month, and the guy who called in the crime and his brother are both under arrest. Turns out the injuries that were suffered were due to a fight they had, and they came up with the story of the racist pro-Israel driver. CAIR has no comments at this time, as the brothers have retained their own council.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

There needs to be some kind of additional penalty for this hoax hate shit no matter who does it. It’s the basest kind of emotional manipulation.

    LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL! FUCK YOU, NO!

We shouldn’t be surprised — all the county health officials got a taste of real power, the governors got to mainline it and the media happily got over a year of “We’re better than the deplorables! Nyah Nyah!” They miss those days and really, really want them back.

Honestly, I’m surprised they’re trying it without just engineering and releasing a new variant. Maybe the Ukraine labs got too distracted and the Chinese decided “enough of this shit” with their real estate woes.

    • rhywun

It’s just advertisement disguised as “news”. The Post has been doing that a lot lately.

Also, it’s from a year ago.

      • sloopyinca

Dammit. It was on the front page near the top. Can’t believe I missed that.

  5. SDF-7

This is what a government-imposed monopoly does. Enjoy it.

    Don’t.

    Fucking.

    Start.

    Me.

Extra fun is all the money PG&E is spending on advertisements all over touting how they’re burying lines and shit. Instead of spending the money actually doing anything — because hey… it doesn’t really matter, they can always raise rates. And work with their bought PUC to screw over solar rates and everything else. So sick of this f’d up state.

    • sloopyinca

Why would a publicly-imposed monopoly ever need to buy advertising? What, so people considering using their own diesel generators will think twice?

      • Nephilium

/looks at all the commercials for mandatory programs

      • SDF-7

Fuck if I know. But they won’t shut. the. fuck. up. My podcast gets ads for this shit, youtube does it like every third ad, MS Solitaire…. why ever they think they need to (cover for their bought PUC decision they just got I guess) they’re damned well pushing it hard.

      • prolefeed

The ads are to tamp down public outcry enough so the intended “customer” of the ads – the regulators who could turn down rate increase requests – approve the rate increases.

      • rhywun

Most of the ones I see are touting “green” fantasies.

      • Pope Jimbo

How can you quibble over a measely $3M/year that Xcel pays to have its name on the St. Paul hockey arena. It isn’t even like the rate payers pay for it!

Here is the response from Xcel as to why it advertises.

“We understand that at this time, when customers are dealing with the impacts of high natural gas prices and inflation, they may question how our company is working to keep our own costs as low as possible.

Advertising provides the same benefits to our customers and the company as it would for any other business. It is one of the tools we use to communicate with our customers – sharing news on the work we’re doing, explaining our programs and services and sharing safety and reliability information.

Some of the ads you see on television (or hear on the radio or see online or in print publications) are not paid for with customer dollars. The same is true for our naming rights with the Xcel Energy Center in Minnesota, which run through mid-2025.

However, unlike other businesses, we also use advertising to help our customers to find ways to use less of our product to help them save on their energy bills. This is called Demand Side Management and raises awareness about these programs to help customers understand the programs and resources available to help them save energy and money. Promotions to help customers understand and take advantage of energy efficiency programs are included in rates, which averages out to about $3.02 per year for our residential and commercial customers.

While these programs help customers save on their monthly energy bills, they also help all customers long term by helping us avoid building new power plants. Since 1992, Colorado customers have helped us avoid building more than 6 power plants by taking part in our conservation programs. In 2021, Colorado customers saved enough electricity to power 71,000 homes and saved enough natural gas to power about 10,000 homes. For every dollar we spent on electric energy efficiency programs in 2021, customers will see nearly three dollars in long-term utility system cost savings.”

Not that money if fungible or anything, but they just have to advertise to teach you maroons how to use electricity wisely.

      • Fourscore

The more we spend the more you save. Government math.

      • EvilSheldon

Part of being a public monopoly is being a deniable front for government propaganda.

While this season, there aren’t new strains like Omicron to worry about, experts are warning of the “tripledemic,” a.k.a. spiking COVID, influenza, and RSV cases, all happening at once.

Yes, we used to call that “cold and flu season,” and no one panicked about it before 2020.

    • Nephilium

I don’t recall ever hearing of RSV until the last year or so.

Breaking sports news: Everton deducted 10 points.

    Man City unavailable for comment.

    • sloopyinca

Whoa, that came out after I’d done the sports stuff.

I think they’re good enough to avoid relegation this year, even with this. And I’d hate to see them go down over a points deduction. I want to see them go down solely based on their on-field product.

      • Raven Nation

They’re probably good enough and there are some pretty weak teams this year.

      • robc

Insanely weak teams this year. The bottom 4, other than Everton, are going to struggle to crack 30 pts.

Bournemouth is on 28.5 pt pace
        Luton 19.
        Shefffield United 15.8.
        Burnley 12.7.

They will do better than that, they have to play each other after all, but a 1/3 of the way thru the season and its ugly.

Everton was on a 44.3 pt pace before deduction, so that reduced it to 34.3. And they had an ugly start to the year, have been playing at top 5 pace since October started (10 pts from 5 matches). 1 pt from first 5 matches of season, 13 from next 7. The big change was the addition of two strikers who can actually score. DCL got healthy and they transferred in Beto.

      • robc

See my comment well below, it drops them to 19th and 2 pts from safety. And Man City is now starring at a 1450 pt deduction, because you know, they wouldnt get any kind of better treatment right?

10 pts per charge is the standard now apparently.

Someone calculated that that would relegate Man City to the 13th tier (if pts deductions worked that way). Although my calculation says 12th.

    • juris imprudent

Yeah, that’s just laughable. Oh, you, without the big-money backing – yeah, you get the hammer.

And the minority Everton owner is now dead.

    • rhywun

      Holy shit.

      Talk about two-tiered “justice”.

      • robc

If Man City gets their 1450 pt deduction, it will be balanced. Of course, Everton was fast tracked in months, while Man City’s charges have been hanging out their about 6 years.

SpaceX had been targeting Friday morning (Nov. 17) for the second test launch of its huge Starship rocket. But that’s no longer the plan.

      Saturday morning it is.

Glad they caught it in time to make the next launch window. I still give it a 50/50 of success in terms of their goals stated for the flight.

    • Fatty Bolger

There’s only a 20 minute launch window, and then they can’t try again until after Thanksgiving. So I don’t think the odds of a launch are great, but fingers crossed. 🤞

  15. Pope Jimbo

    They didn’t see this coming?

It is only a few pennies a day! Much cheaper than the cost overrun of our new Family Leave Act! A report came out recently saying that the new tax to pay for universal paid family leave was going to be raised to collect another $600M over the next 3 years.

“The Christian in me doesn’t. The policy person in me does,” said Sen. Julia Coleman, R-Waconia. “This was something we flagged. We pointed out that the math wasn’t adding up here.” Republicans complained both that the program was mandatory and that Minnesota’s version had among the most-generous benefits of any of the states that have created similar programs.

“But it had one of the lowest tax rates. It didn’t make sense,” Coleman said. The actuary supports that concern, saying the payroll tax rate in the bill is too low to support the program, which will cost upwards of $600 million more in the first three years.

Backers of the plan, however, said the actuarial analysis brought no significant worries. House File 2 that passed by narrow party line votes was signed by Gov. Tim Walz last May.

“The study is exactly what we were expecting,” said Sen. Alice Mann, the Edina DFLer who led the push for the bill through the 2023 session. She sees the numbers from a different perspective: The rate of 0.7% of taxable wages sponsors included in the bill is pretty close to the 0.78% the actuary suggested for the first three years of the program, she said.

“That’s 50 cents per person per week,” Mann said of the higher premium. “So it’s not like we were off by a significant margin, whatsoever.” Mann said the proposed higher rate is well beneath the law’s cap of 1.2% of wages paid.

For the price of a cup of coffee you too can have govt utopia here in Sunny Minnesoda. All my family of 5 needs to do is pay $130/year.

    • juris imprudent

Backers of the plan, however, said the actuarial analysis brought no significant worries.

Well of course not, those are just numbers and numbers don’t reflect reality – they are just symbols. Everyone knows that math is symbolic of white privilege.

    • R C Dean

“The study is exactly what we were expecting”

I’m sure they were expecting something that would let them lowball the tax going in, knowing that it would be easy to raise it later.

  16. robc

You missed on Everton getting hit with a 10 pt deduction. Assuming its not reduced on appeal, it drops them to 19th but only 2 pts from safety.

If ot stands, I cant wait to see the 1450 pt deduction Man City gets. Someone calculated that that would drop them to 13th tier. Thats not how point deductions work, of course, but thats the way it should work.

Of course Man City was get a fine or a pat on the back, not annihilation.

    • Certified Public Asshat

LC have an interesting case now too. They do not get relegated if the punishment was served during the season it should have applied.

      • robc

Which year? The “offense” happened in 2020, but the investigation started in March, there wasn’t time to get it done before end of 2023.

And it turns out the official finding is a 19.5 million pound overspend. 10 pts over less than 20 million. If they apply the same standard, Man City and Chelsea are going to be smoking craters.

      • Certified Public Asshat

I thought it was for 21/22, which if it was investigated timely would have meant a deduction for 22/23. To be clear, I think Everton are getting hosed here. I also think point deductions are dumb and fines would be more appropriate.

      • robc

Its a little confusing. I think you are right on the 19.5 million overspend, but the report talks about contract extensions in 2020.

What it came down to was Everton estimated 21 million more in revenue in 21/22 than they actually received and spent based on the estimate. If the revenue estimate had been accurate, they would have been 1.5 million underspent.

They took a gamble that spending the money would make the team better. It didnt, because they spent poorly. The thing is, that is exactly what is wrong with FFP, it is anti-entrepreneurial.

And, of course, there is the corruption angle. Man City investigation has been going on since 2017, but Everton was quick tracked (even if you think it wasnt fast enough). Everton cooperated and handed over all the documents because they had been working with the PL, who had approved all the spending. But Man City has fought ever step of the way and refuses to cooperate. The PL needed a “win” to prove that a government commission wasnt necessary, so this is their PR move.

Well! I have a legit good idea for an Iron Rule. No time to type it now. Waiting to see my neurologist. But I did worked on it and wording last night.

The Law is there. Curious about feedback on wording and my reasoning for the also consistent outliers.

    • Evan from Evansville

As in, it is an inescapable reality. Not truth. Fact.

People forget it constantly. It explains all of what humans do.

Iron Rule: Human beings are social primates.

That’s for brevity. Outliers are such, either by choice or parental/Nature’s ‘choice.’ Money + Power = Status. Social groups fighting/working to get/preserve mates, which comes from status, accumulated land and resources.

People are so eager to think homo sapiens are ‘special.’ in our own way, yes. But we’re fucking social primates. My slightly longer wordings are no more than ~12 words and are at home.

      Thoughts?

      • R C Dean

Too general to be an Iron Law. Needs to describe some specific and unavoidable aspect of human organizations/societies, have some predictive power.

I can’t believe IL is such a MAGA country regressive shithole. A subsidy program for EV cars *shudder*

Real utopias like Minnesoda have E-bike subsidies! And they are income-based!!!!

Bike retailers around Minnesota say e-bike sales have surged in recent years. And they expect further growth now that Minnesota has joined the increasing number of states and cities to pass e-bike rebate programs.

“E-bikes are really the wave of the future. They go out the door like crazy,” said Tony Winkler inside e-Bike Duluth, a small shop in a converted home just across the street from Duluth’s popular Lakewalk paved trail.

State lawmakers set aside $4 million for the program in the transportation budget bill they approved last week: $2 million per year in 2024 and 2025.

The maximum rebate is $1,500, up to 75 percent of the value of a new e-bike. And it’s scaled based on your income. So the more someone earns, the smaller their rebate.

For a family earning $125,000 a year or more, the most they can get back is $1,000, up to 50 percent of the cost a new bike.

Anyone want to explain why a product that is “flying out the door” needs a subsidy?

The govt must stop the deplorables from fixing their own bikes! Make them buy another new bike instead.

In recent months, People for Bikes, the national trade organization representing bicycle manufacturers, has reached out to lawmakers and officials in several states to request that e-bikes be exempted from right-to-repair bills. Those bills aim to make it easier for members of the public to access the parts, tools, and information they need to fix their stuff. The industry claims it’s a matter of safety, and that people without the proper training should not attempt to repair e-bikes — especially not the batteries. Instead, manufacturers want to see dead and broken batteries recycled, which is why they recently launched a public education campaign encouraging consumers to do so.

At a minimum, the dirty rubes should have to bring their e-bikes to an authorized govt licensed repair shop.

It seems I’m supposed to hate Elon Musk even more now. He hates Jews, or something. Wants them all dead, maybe.

I’m definitely not the dog, this time, because the whistle is completely inaudible. I actually tried to read a couple of articles, and I obviously don’t have the right code book to decipher what all the outraged squealing is about. A bunch of oblique references to things people said which were so horrifically bad they cannot be repeated in full detail, but Musk apparently agreed, or didn’t object strenuously enough.

    Special education

The Department of Education released a list of higher education and K-12 institutions that are under investigation for alleged shared ancestry violations Thursday as part of the Biden administration’s effort to address reports of rising discrimination in schools.

“Hate has no place in our schools, period. When students are targeted because they are–or are perceived to be—Jewish, Muslim, Arab, Sikh, or any other ethnicity or shared ancestry, schools must act to ensure safe and inclusive educational environments where everyone is free to learn,” Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a statement.

The department said the investigation, which will update weekly on the Office for Civil Rights website, is to address the “alarming rise in reports of antisemitism, anti-Muslim, anti-Arab, and other forms of discrimination” in schools since the Oct. 7 surprise attacks by Palestinian militant group Hamas on Israel, and the weeks-long conflict that has ensued.

The department said by releasing the list of schools, it is following up on President Biden’s promise to protect students and foster a safe and inclusive learning environment.

“As part of that work, last week the Education Department released a Dear Colleague letter reminding schools of their legal obligations under the Title VI and its implementing regulations to provide all students a school environment free from discrimination based on race, color, or national origin, including shared ancestry or ethnic characteristics,” the statement said.

So the list dates back to 2016/17. 9 new investigations out of 51 total opened since 10/7. Columbia, Cornell, Duke, UNC, USC(cali), UC Berkely, a bunch of CUNY, Oberlin and Atlanta Public schools. Bastions of right wing hate the lot of them.

Title VI’s protections require schools that receive federal financial assistance address discrimination.

Schools that fail to address issues of discrimination can lose federal funding or be referred to the Department of Justice, the release said.

As of Nov. 16, there are 51 schools being investigated by the Education Department.

    Collectivist dilemma

Domestically, the president has also unveiled a strategy to tackle Islamophobia, amid concerns among some Democrats he could be vulnerable to losing support of Muslim Americans, especially in the critical swing state of Michigan in next year’s election. Amid an unprecedented upsurge of antisemitic incidents in the United States, especially on college campuses, the president also directed his administration to protect Jewish Americans.

But the longer the civilian carnage plays out in Gaza and as anger mounts among activists on the American left, questions will arise over Biden’s capacity to sustain his bedrock support for Israel’s military action. Senior administration officials have repeatedly denied that any part of Biden’s calculations on Israel are rooted in domestic politics. But Democratic Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday that progressive anger over the war “has a potential” to hurt Biden politically. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told CNN last week that the White House position on the Gaza war was also a problem for Biden among younger voters on whom Democrats often depend to drive up turnout. “I think it’s significant,” the New York Democrat said. “Young people have been paying attention to this issue.”

The issue is especially acute given the president’s weak political standing overall, as his reelection race heats up with polls showing that he’s shedding support from critical elements of the Democratic coalition.

How do we formulate a narrative for this? How do we keep the dupes in line?

  32. Sensei

Funny this hasn’t got much space in the MSM.

Myanmar’s military junta appears to be in terminal decline

Myint Swe, the acting president of Mynamar’s military government, has warned that the country “will be split into various parts” after his armed forces suffered huge territorial losses to resistance fighters recently. His response was to call on Mynamar’s people to support his military forces, a call that is likely, based on previous experience, to fall mainly on deaf ears.

Quick let’s see what the good old USA can do to make things worse here and piss off China and India.

It’s entertaining watching the juxtaposition of many commentators go from “we can’t continue to fund Ukraine’s war effort” to “why don’t you want to fund Israel’s war effort?” And then on the other side somehow Ukraine flags have been replaced by Palestinian flags.

Dave Smith remains “the most consistent motherfucker”.

      • Fatty Bolger

Israel is an official non-NATO major ally, unlike Ukraine, so there’s at least a valid argument to be made for that position. The Ukraine/Palestine flag people are just lame “I support the current thing” followers.

  34. The Late P Brooks

Domestically, meanwhile, the reaction to the war in Gaza has served to reveal already wide ideological splits inside the Democratic Party and the coalition on which Biden is relying to try to carry him to reelection next year. Large numbers of younger voters are showing greater support for the Palestinians than has been typical in the United States, following harrowing video footage of civilian casualties caused by relentless bombing by Israel. Protests have rocked university campuses, where there’s been an outbreak of anti-Israel feeling that has sometimes crossed into blatant antisemitism. On the left, the plight of Palestinians has also become a vessel for frustration among progressive activists and an organizing point for left-wing politics.

In the most graphic sign of the dissent Wednesday, a protest demanding a ceasefire in Gaza – for which Biden has refused to call – saw clashes between demonstrators and police outside the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other senior Democratic leaders were inside at the time.

    The plantation needs better fences.

But at the same time, iMessage isn’t going anywhere. It will continue to be the messaging platform used for all communication between iPhone users. RCS will simply supplant SMS and MMS and exist separately from iMessage when available. SMS and MMS will also continue to be available as a fallback when needed, Apple says.

    WSJ link:

Putin does not feel any pressure to end the war or worry about his ability to sustain it more or less indefinitely. As winter approaches, the Russian army has mounted a limited ground offensive of its own and surely will expand missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities, power plants, industrial sites and other critical infrastructure. At a minimum, Putin expects that U.S. and European support for Ukraine will dissipate, that Ukrainians will tire of the endless terror and destruction inflicted on them, and that a combination of the two will enable him to dictate the terms for a deal to end the war and claim victory. From his perspective, the ideal person to put such a deal together is Donald Trump, if he returns to the White House in January 2025.

That rat bastard Trump might pull the plug on our war profit project in Ukraine? Truly the end of American democracy is at hand.

    Markets are resilient, ch 6,802

The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control announced three vessels and shipping companies being sanctioned for violating the Russian oil sanctions on Thursday, only a few days after Treasury began a separate, larger probe of approximately 30 ship management companies covering 100 vessels suspected of violating a price cap on Russian oil.

“Shipping companies and vessels participating in the Russian oil trade while using Price Cap Coalition service providers should fully understand that we will hold them accountable for compliance,” said Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo in a statement on Thursday. “We are committed to maintaining market stability in spite of Russia’s war against Ukraine, while cutting into the profits the Kremlin is using to fund its illegal war and remaining unyielding in our pursuit of those facilitating evasion of the price cap.”

But as the Treasury seeks to cut off the Kremlin’s access to oil profits, its hunt for crude tankers and shippers violating OFAC guidelines is revealing complexities in its own guidelines and a murky marine industry.

I can’t believe anybody would ignore Comrade Biden’s noble decree just to make a few bucks.

  38. The Late P Brooks

Since July, Wright says most exports from Russia are assumed to be above the caps, yet a large number of ships from within the EU continue to trade. This is because of the way Russian crude is traded.

“It is very likely vessels loading Russian cargoes that are EU-owned will have documentation showing a crude trade below the price cap, even if the cargo was actually traded above the price cap,” Wright said. “This is because a charterer or middleman will have traded it at a price that can be shown to the owner as part of a wider trade with the final buyer. The (vessel) owner is unlikely to have any evidence to the contrary.”

Vessel owners do not produce these documents, he said, but are provided with these documents by the charterer.

“The vessel owners are merely the custodians of information provided to them,” Wright said.

Obviously, we should seize any ships we intercept unless the ship owners can prove origin and price paid for the cargo. That will put a stop to black market profiteering.
