Poison Ivy

It was time to build another guitar, so I decided to take a broad view of what I wanted, instead of creating on the fly as usual. I decided on green using the metal cast paint I have had good results with. I also wanted to go with a very black theme with some cool results. I did an oil black on as much chrome as I could and used many black oxide screws.

Next comes the paint, which is pretty straightforward: 5 coats at 10-minute intervals, dry for 7 days and then 4 coats of lacquer to seal. The body took 10 days to paint.

Now it was time to build out the body, which is a lot of fun laying out the placement of the bridge and pickups, while keeping a good look.

The Neck

This kit came with an unfinished maple neck with maple fingerboard, also unfinished. The head stock came as a square block and I cut it to match the Tele stock with my scroll saw and it was good. The finish needed planning and much fine masking to get a good playable result, which made me smile.

I used a smoke black overall (except the fingerboard) and sanded between coats. I was looking for a worn yet brand-new finish, and I did a great job IMHO.

And here are the results, clean and green and ready for setup.

Setup took about 2 hours. The build is solid, so it was a breeze. I build at my studio but do my setups at home so I can take my time, and it pays off with a very nice guitar.

Time to set up

Poison Ivy

When I build a guitar, after the visual design, I think of three things and build to them.

Does it feel good in your hands?

Does it sound good?

Does it stay in tune?

I am happy with my results. I hope you like them as well.

      Speaking of DEDthreds,

Juris: “Got to be able to sail up from the ocean”

Why? Does it say so in the Federal Register that the only navigable waters have to flow to the ocean?

      https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2020/04/21/2020-02500/the-navigable-waters-protection-rule-definition-of-waters-of-the-united-states

Looking at it, it only states that oceans are, along with lakes and rivers, navigable, and not necessary as a destination.

      • juris imprudent

        SC in 1870:

Those rivers must be regarded as public navigable rivers in law which are navigable in fact. And
they are navigable in fact when they are used, or are susceptible of being used, in their ordinary
condition, as highways for commerce, over which trade and travel are or may be conducted in
the customary modes of trade and travel on water.

Hmm, don’t see the word ocean there.

      • juris imprudent

No that’s true. The question before the court wasn’t about navigating the seas, it was about rivers. Maritime jurisdiction starts with the oceans though.

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

My point is that the navigable body doesn’t necessarily need to either lead to an ocean nor does it necessarily have to be navigable its entire length. See the willamette, broken up by falls and thus not navigable to the ocean, or the trike, which peters out in the desert.

Rumor is historically they back channeled when they were moving POWs on airplanes on this route. The Ukrainians claim the Russians didn’t do so this time.

Same route is used to ferry munitions by the same aircraft. Make what conspiracies you would like after that.

      • Urthona

Are we suggesting the Russians were secretly ok with the Uke POWs getting shot down?

      • Sensei

Or the Russians kept saying they were ferrying POWs while instead ferrying munitions.

I don’t trust anybody here to be truthful.

      • Drake

It would be very easy to prove or disprove. Did the transport planes in question arrive at the exchange site with POWs?

      • "RFK Jr Apologist"

They pulled a Lusitania. A munition transport guarded by unsuspecting non-combatants. Heads, I win, tails, you lose

      • Ted S.

Unsurprisingly, the usual suspects here immediately jump to blaming Ukraine.

Anti-Russia spin? Oh that can only possibly be propaganda!
Anti-Ukraine spin? Gospel truth, and I’m going to run to Glibertarians to be the first one to virtue-signal my hatred for Ukraine! Ucraina delenda est!

      • "RFK Jr Apologist"

        Sarcasm?

      • Drake

This is certainly a fuck up. I doubt the Russians intentionally sacrificed 3 pilots and an aircraft. They may have flubbed the coordination. Who knows what could have gone wrong on the Uke side.

      • R C Dean

Yeah, letting the other guy know when you are flying a plane with POWs within range of their air defenses would be the decent thing to do. I expect the Russians did so. I wouldn’t be shocked to learn they didn’t this time (intentionally or no). I also wouldn’t be shocked to learn they lied about it to transport munitions, either. Finally, I wouldn’t be shocked to learn they did warn the Ukes, and the warning got misplaced.

      • hayeksplosives

Nah, if the Russians wanted to kill 65 POWs on purpose they’d have all fallen out of an open plane window. I hear Boeing makes those windows that open mid-flight so it’s not out of the question.

One more thing I don’t have to worry about

Popular apps like Venmo, Zelle, and Cash App aren’t doing enough to protect consumers from fraud that occurs when unauthorized users gain access to unlocked devices, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg warned.

“Thousands or even tens of thousands can be drained from financial accounts in a matter of seconds with just a few taps,” Bragg said in letters to app makers. “Without additional protections, customers’ financial and physical safety is being put at risk.”

According to Bragg, his office and the New York Police Department have been increasingly prosecuting crimes where phones are commandeered by bad actors to quickly steal large amounts of money through financial apps.

This can happen to unwitting victims when fraudsters ask “to use an individual’s smartphone for personal use” or to transfer funds to initiate a donation for a specific cause. Or “in the most disturbing cases,” Bragg said, “offenders have violently assaulted or drugged victims, and either compelled them to provide a password for a device or used biometric ID to open the victim’s phone before transferring money once the individual is incapacitated.”

Have my phone tied to my bank account? No thanks.

They don’t know how to not market. They have marketing people so they have to market.

I’ve said several times when it first blew up after the second actual quasi-apology and simply subsidized their distributors and retailers with promotions and done low key general marketing people would have forgot in six months and bought cheap beer specials.

Instead every new headline grabbing national promotion reminded people about why they were boycotting the brand.

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

They should have just dropped Bud Light, make up some new label such as McCans Light or whatever, and pumped the snot out of that. Same brewery, same sales channels, no association with that idiocy.

        But, no.

      • "RFK Jr Apologist"

Right. An entire generation of 20 something year-old guys now associate Bud Lite as a gay beer. Much like heterosexual men once distanced themselves from Zima, they are clearly avoiding Bud Lite.

    Truck stop hydrogen

    – General Motors and Honda Motor have begun commercial production of hydrogen fuel cell systems in a step toward offering alternative zero-emissions solutions beyond battery-electric vehicles.

The fuel cell systems are produced through a 50-50 joint venture between the automakers at an $85 million facility in suburban Detroit. The companies, which are marketing and selling products separately, are calling the “large-scale” production at the joint venture the first of its kind in the U.S.

Many in the automotive industry view fuel cells as a replacement for use cases for diesel fuel in things such as generators, heavy-duty trucks, semitrucks and construction equipment, among others.

More infrastructure grants! You get 100 billion, and you get 100 billion…

    • Drake

An accident the ruptures a hydrogen fuel cell – ends in an earth-shattering kaboom?

      • Not Adahn

Not necessarily. The Hindenburg didn’t detonate, after all.

      • R C Dean

The Hindenburg wasn’t under the kind of pressure they’ll need for a fuel cell to move you more than a few feet, either.

      • Not Adahn

To get a good detonation, you’ll need to get a mix a bit on the lean side. Otherwise, it’ll be no worse than gasoline with the benefit that it disperses a fuckton faster.

I get it really bad. I avoid it like the plague. Might be better now that I have not been around it for 15 years. When I got it I had to get steroid shots, pills and cream. My whole body would react. It was depressing.

These are really cool. A question: it looks like the electrical burning process leaves a pretty deep mark. Do you finish these with a clear epoxy or similar so they are smooth to the touch?

Alright, two questions – looks like this was a spec build. Do you have a retailer who sells these for you?

    • kinnath

There are many suppliers of kits available at various quality/price points.

        Which prompts another question:

Yusef, which kit maker do you prefer?

      • kinnath

This is the supplier that I used for this guitar. Mine is not complete and stares mournfully at me every night.
