Medvedev is through (barely) to the semis. And as I write this, Alcarez is two sets down to Zverev. The women’s semis are set. And one side is definitely stronger than the other. Chelski are through to the League Cup final. We’ll know if they get Liverpool or Fulham this afternoon. And today is the day when we find out if Jim Harbaugh is headed back to the NFL in Los Angeles. And that’s it for sports.
Oh yes, this stupid shit again. When you’re flying tv personalities halfway around the world to scare people because of climate change, it’s hard to take you seriously.
This all seems legit. I hear of offers like this being made all the time. The politics and political affiliations of the participants here are a mere coincidence. Now why don’t you people leave that poor crackhead tax-dodger alone?
This gets better and better every single day. Pretty soon they’ll be asking about his connection to running ho’s or something equally insane. And the left will defend him with cries of racism.
What an asshole. No, I mean that in a congratulatory way. It’s quite impressive.
What an asshole. OK, I mean this the other way. That parent needs to not be an asshole to the self-described obese person who had the courtesy for others to do the right thing.
“That’s not mine!” I don’t even know where that hand came from.
Wait, what the fuck is this? I had to check to make sure the story wasn’t from two years ago. “Follow the science,” my ass. This is just more authoritarian bullshit.
How about “no.” You can fuck off. And before I hear any more people chime in about it being illegal to ignore a SC ruling, I’ll point them to all the governors who ignored Bruen and Biden who ignored the SC on student loan forgiveness EO’s. So this hypocrites can suck my balls.
Here’s a lovely song. About love, no less. And here’s an absolute gem. Enjoy them both.
And enjoy this lovely (rainy) Wednesday, dear friends.
Re: recoviding — I finally got a doctor’s appointment to approve my request for a new CPAP*, and they were requiring masks.
The health care system here is notably shittier than in TX. More expensive, less efficient, and much, MUCH surlier.
*mine is >20 years old, apparently you’re supposed to replace them every five years.
No masks in my area and everyone is pretty nice. Can’t claim efficient, though. It is MUCH harder to get a doctor here than it was in NYC, where you can’t sneeze anywhere without hitting a doctor.

Yeah — I watched a clip yesterday of Doocey attempting to grill Kirby on how cutting the wire wasn’t the administration helping illegal immigration (though the headlines for the clip annoyed me.. Kirby wasn’t “stunned” or whatever hyperbole click-bait they used), and apparently the current spin is that Texas is preventing the Border Patrol from “getting access so they can process immigrants”.
Which, I will have to give them credit for — is true. The problem being that “process” for this Administration means “rubber stamp, hand a meaningless court date to and either give them money and a plane ride or at least just let them go”, which is rather the whole problem in a nutshell.
Morning, all. I’ll have to go read UCS’s bit on the shift register at some point now… late night tech articles are evil! Some of us sleep! 😉

Sure, Chicken Little. Funny how catastrophe is always just over the horizon but never seems to arise. Although to these guys’ credit, they finally stopped blaming Reagan for the impending nuclear conflagration.

I’m going to be flying in June with a 3 year old and a 1 year old. The three year old has his own seat paid for and the 1 year old will be infant-in-arms. I can’t imagine the entitlement of telling another passenger to give up a seat they paid hundreds of dollars for so you can not have your toddler in your lap.
Have you met people?
I’m not even surprised.
The mother could have paid for a seat for her son. I imagine it was a cost saving decision like people who buy center seats and then try to get people to change so they can sit together.
My kids’ daycare still has a way too strict (imo) COVID policy. 5 days out minimum if they test positive. After the 5th day they can return with a negative test, otherwise come back after 10 days. Yeah, it’s not even February and I’ve already used most of my sick time for the year.
At this point, it’s barely even in place for health reasons. It’s because they know that too many places still require forced isolation for several days after symptoms go away, so they try to minimize transmission as much as possible. Too bad the *entire* infant room has or has had COVID in the last 3 weeks.
I can’t think of a single place around me that even requests tests anymore. But I do have coworkers who are still on board with testing, and attempting to self-isolate in the same house to “stop the spread”. As it’s work, I’ve avoided any comments on it.
I’m in Massachusetts, and most places are fine now, but the people are still retarded
As an example, my wife is a therapist and saw a client in the morning. Later that day he let her know he tested positive. My wife felt fine and tested negative herself, but to be courteous (against my recommendation) she let her other clients know. 90% of them cancelled their appointments and we lost about 1,500 in income.
No telephonic appointments?
Ugh. Sorry man.
STEVE AM THERAPIST.
WHEN DO THERAPY HIM NO WORRY ABOUT COVID, ONLY CRABS.
Covid’s hardly even on the mind around here. Occasionally we’ll get a “please pray for my grandma, as she has covid and her pulmonary health isn’t great”, but nobody I know locally is testing or isolating or doing anything outside of the pre-covid norm when they get the sniffles.
There are plenty of people I know back in DFW who nose swab at the first sneeze and do the whole song and dance when they pop a positive.
Simple solution: don’t test them.
I wish it were that easy. Two problems: they require a test if the kid has a fever. And my wife is a true believer. Not as much as in 2020, but it’s still a sensitive topic in our house.
Oof. That sucks.
I hear you brother. I hear you.
That has been my system.
– Have you or anyone in your house tested positive for COVID?
– No
Yep, this isn’t a high road to take in this situation. Standfast and make the Feds do something stupid like force you to allow people to invade your state.
It’s the usual demand that non-leftists unilaterally disarm so the leftists have free rein to pursue their goals By Any Means Necessary.
So now the SCT means nothing to either “side”? I guess we are just going to have to admit we have no rule of law anymore. I choose not to be like the Left.
I’d rather make it a point to hurt those that do not follow the law.
Winning is all that matters. Losing gracefully is establishment Republican talk! /so sayeth those with principles
Welcome to the party, pal!
This is the conundrum of the post-legitimacy era. Do you cling to the tatters of the rule of law, even as the other side beats you over the head with the chump effect? Or do you compromise your principles, sell your soul to the devil, and try to seize power to prevent being dominated by your enemies?
To quote a computer, the only way to win is to not play.
It only takes one side to wage war.
Hmmm, we could use a nice think piece on the post-legitimacy era.
I’ll see what I can do 😊
Someone could serialize Gibbon I suppose.
IS he currently parallelized? What kind of chip would I need to make him serial? First off, how wide is the data bus?
I feel like the ship on rule of law sailed several years back. I’d point towards the GM bankruptcy as the really big break that stood out to me.
I am with the Swiss Guard here. Allow the Feds their due, but only on the most narrow terms. Only provide a passage a singe file person can walk down, and only at a crab walk, and do this while pressing the court about it via the Bruen decision.

After loaning Hunter Biden nearly $5 million, Hollywood attorney Kevin Morris acknowledged to Congress that the president’s adult son would not owe him any repayment until after the 2024 elections. He also told lawmakers he had purchased some of Hunter Biden’s artwork.
Seems legit.
That’s an odd repayment date. Has he produced any documentation for these loans?
I did enjoy his using the attorney client privilege as a substitute for the Fifth Amendment. I don’t suppose anyone has asked Hunter to waive the privilege, because I don’t expect anyone on the committee is both smart enough to do so and dedicated enough to getting to the bottom of this.
So, it’s a loan and thus not subject to income taxes, except for the purchased paintings, but there is no expectation that the loan be repaid?
Did Biden pay taxes on all the paintings people “purchased” from him?
Invoking privilege suggests that the loans were expressly made in attorney-client context, no? I thought attorneys loaning money to clients was a “hauled before the bar” kind of no-no.
The bar of California? Bwahahahahhahaa
What’s an appropriate collateral for $5,000,000 worth of crack and prostitutes?
The Presidency?
And the left will defend him with cries of racism.
The left has low expectations for the POCs, which is definitely not a racism…
You see Morris and Hunter and you would think Hunter would look at him and say to himself “shit, I really gotta clean up my act or I’m gonna look just like him”. Instead it seems to be Morris looking at Hunter and thinking “man I wish I was as together as him”.

IOW, I’m as fat as ever.
That post article is a disaster. The fattie in the story is not in any of the pictures and was also in the right. The parent is the asshole here.
Well, I read some more of the transcript of that attempt to “bribe” Lake into dropping out.
Yeah, that was a bribe. They ask her what number she would take. This wasn’t a political quid pro quo – “Hey how about this cushy sinecure/appointment”. This was “How many hundreds do we need to put in the paper bag.”
And nothing will come of it. The corruption goes too deep.
Was thinking about this yesterday: since she’s not a public official, is there a crime here? Sincere question.
oh, maybe not. it’s still horribly corrupt. but perhaps not illegal.
That is a good point. Regardless of crime or no crime, it was an awful thing to ask. “Hey buddy, stop doing what you are doing for two years and I’ll pay you for nothing” still sits sour with me.
However, I am libertarian and have at least two opinions on every subject, so I would suspect it does violate some political ethics law to ask a critic to stop talking about you for money.
Agree with both responses. Obviously, the guy offering the bribe should resign (he won’t) but other than that, nothing.
Even bigger they talked about the cartel, she tongue-in-cheek mentioned they will have her killed for turning it down…
So what? It is a private organization deciding who they prefer to have as a candidate. The only election that matters to the public is the general.
When my kids were small and skinny I paid for a full seat. Now I’m thinking I missed a chance to sell the unused part of their seat to a fat person.

It sounds like the FBI is a criminal organization.
I’ve heard stories of them doing good from time to time, but haven’t personally seen anything good done by them. In my neighborhood, we’ve had 2 neighbors raided by the FBI. The most recent was a teenaged online shit talker. The other is still in prison for “lending material support to a terrorist organization” also for online chats with an agent. They flash banged and did the full SWAT thing on both.

“Assigned.”
Brown University recently hosted a seminar called “Trans Youth Now Series” with Michelle Forcier, where she described how the concept gender identity can be introduced to parents as early as during an in utero sonography exam:
“The ultrasonographer or the person doing the prenatal care can say, hey, they saw a penis or they didn’t see a penis and your baby will be assigned a male or female gender at birth based on these body parts but who knows what their gender or identity will be when they grow up. And that’s so exciting. Again, when you’re in the newborn nursery, you can do the same.”
Michelle Forcier, MD, MPH is a Professor of Pediatrics and the Assistant Dean of Medicine (Admissions ) at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
I guess I am not a medicalologist so I can’t comment. (but, seriously, it is insane how this gender-bending ideology has infected everything.)
And that’s so exciting.

It’s a mouthful, but alternative headline: I’m obese, I paid for a second seat, and I am not like the awful woman who for some reason will be in the photos accompanying this story, who expects free seats.
Sub headline: The parent with a toddler only paid for one seat.
It really should be I paid for two seats, fuck off.
Succinct.
Well, Neocon Nikki (or Horizontal Haley, if you prefer…) is not a conservative.
CNN’s exit polls show that 70% of Nikki Haley voters are NOT registered Republicans.
Its the grand conspiracy the media claimed wasn’t true but was true that people switched parties in NH in hopes of Trump losing. It would have worked I believe if Team Biden didn’t throw a fit about the dates and had his name on the ballot. The true blue could stay back and vote for Biden while the rest could switch and destroy Trump. Instead, members of the Dems needed to stay on the dem side to make sure Biden won via write-in.
Well they can’t make that play in SC even if it had worked in NH. And when you can’t carry your home state, you can’t carry anything else.
Yeah her insistence on staying in is a gamble I think until SCOTUS affirms/overturns the CO Supreme Court.
Your future president Kamala Harris disagrees.
Wow, you just made me realize my tripwire for emigration.
A good example of why Trump is gonna lose every swing state though. Not exactly a Republican own.
I wouldn’t go that far. If the Democrats had had a real primary in NH, they couldn’t have crossed over.
Regardless, you need actual middle of the road voters to win a presidential election. Trump is incredibly weak there. I can’t fathom how he wins.
Or it could end up a battle of the bases with everyone else just sitting out on voting – which is what I’ll likely do. If no one earns my vote, they sure as fuck aren’t entitled to it.
Ding ding ding ding ding
Not many registered Democrats made the deadline to switch parties. Only 6% of those voting in the Republican primary were Democrats that had switched before the deadline. 51% of those voting in the Republican primary were registered Republicans. The rest were undeclared.
Middle of the road voters dominate the general election in NH. I’ve talked with some folks that have been canvassing and talking to actual voters. Middle of the road folks in NH not only won’t vote for Trump, but they won’t vote Republican if Trump is at the top of the ballot. This does not mean they will vote Democrat. These people might not vote at all or they might vote Democrat.
I simply can’t understand being middle of the road at this point. Both sides have pushed all their chips to the middle of the table, and these people are still laser focused on personality politics? Do you not see your society self immolating around you?
Middle of the road voters seem to have accepted that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
She’s a harpie and a warwhore but she stands zero chance of attaining the presidency without some civil war inducing level of fuckery. If Trump gets convicted we’ll find out just how stupid the GOP honchos really are/aren’t.
Trump loses bullshit cases – Carroll, the non-fraud in NY. Those aren’t criminal though. Georgia is exploding, and if SCotUS rules out the abuse of Sarbanes-Oxley for J6, Smith’s case takes a huge hit.
I could see the GOP disqualifying Trump after a felony conviction and installing second place Haley but that’d completely wreck their party forever. I think that’s the play that Haley’s making based on the false belief that people would just fall in line. As a secondary benefit for her, it’s a grift and she’s making money.
She’s playing for Sec State. Stay in the race long enough, and the frontrunner hands out door prizes for your capitulation.
That’d be a personnel mistake of extraordinary magnitude so Trump will probably walk right into it.
haha yeah.
I mean he did appoint her the first time. I think something would be offered.
That’s something I really hate about the man. He’ll trash her all campaign long, and then he’ll hire her and claim how great she is.
He needs to realize that the “Keep your friends close and your enemies even closer” stuff was a badass movie line but it’s terrible advice in the real world.
Something so stupid only the Light Bringer ™ has done it before!
I think Obama took a slightly higher ground approach than Trump. Then again, that’s not something difficult to do.

*insert Nelson HaHa gif*
I am not surprised it didn’t work but why would it increase?
Because instead of the shitty extra-thin plastic on the free bags they started using quality bags with stronger construction?
I mean, my 1.5mil plastic bags are fantastic, but do weigh several times what a pre-ban giveaway bag does.
So the overall plastic increased. I see.
Yes. Look at Sprouts. They started charging for plastic bags, and switched to the ultra-thick bags. Nobody cares, you just pay an extra small fee and throw the heavy bags away instead. Behavior will not change. Very few people are going to carry bags around with them to go to the store.
It says that the reusable bags are not reused often enough as well.
NJ Legislature’s ears perk up! We can make a new law that requires all citizens to reuse their bags at minimum four times a day!
Because folks who forgot a bag are forced to buy a full on reusable bag at point of sale. Paper bags are also evil.
Is there an upside to paper bags relative to the alternative? Most have no handles, tear more easily than the alternatives, are bulkier when packed away for disposable, not waterproof, and often don’t survive one use, let alone more than one.
Paper bags stay upright better in trunks, have alternate uses (remembers book covers), are recyclable (as much as any paper is which is more than plastic is), and can be used as fire starters.
Starting fires is a negative, since the quantity you end up having to deal with ends up being a fire hazard.
Are you storing your used bags by a heat source that can ignite them? I’m referring to things such as using the paper bags for chimney starters, fire pits, grillsm and the like.
I store them with my oil-soaked rag collection.
Right next to the collection of flint and steel strikers?
On the shelf over his phosphorous collection.
Plastic bags can be thermally desorbed into an excellent diesel fuel additive.
They’re shaped and structured in a way that is more advantageous to efficient packing both of products internally and of bags in the back of a car/van/suv/whatever. There’s less likelihood of your oranges rolling up to your center console at the first stoplight. If properly packed, they shouldn’t be wearing out after one use, and they fold flat rather than wadding up into a ball that needs to be stored in some container. Our paper bags slide under the lunchbox we use to store our plastic bags.
There’s definitely a place for both, but I take paper whenever I can get it. BTW I don’t think I’ve seen a no-handle paper grocery bag in 20 years.
agreed
There’s no efficiency in having your groceries spilled all over the parking lot because the paper bag once again failed to survive the trip to the car. And plastic bags fold up smaller than paper. Why are you wadding them up? If I wadded up the paper bags you’d complain I was storing them wrong.
I have rarely seen a handle on a paper bag, those are reserved for the to-go and delivery customers. Since I shop in-person, and refuse to directly fund the anti-human slush fund at the DEC, I bring my bags.
I have rarely seen a handle on a paper bag, those are reserved for the to-go and delivery customers.
To be fair, if I had to deal with wafer thin paper bags without handles, I’d hate them too.
If anything, my experience has been the opposite. Robust paper bags with solid handles and translucent plastic bags looking for an excuse to split open or otherwise spill their contents.
We now get the super heavy duty plastic bags (reusable!) for a nickel. I would rather have the good paper bags, with handles, but no, and these are a lot less useable the second time around. Harder to scoop cat litter into them, stack books for the used book store, etc.
My wife picked up a set of foldable reusable bags she keeps in the car.
They actually have a structure of the same shape as a paper bag that’s stronger, but still folds up.
Obvious solution is to take away bags entirely. Like Walmart is doing.
Yes. Juggling your purchases to the car will definitely not shrink the amount people buy.
Car? This should be within the 15 minute walk of your neighborhood.
Little personal push metal carts for everyone!
personal push metal carts
They have those free right in the store!
Except for those evil capitalists at Aldis.
Fuck that. I just wont go there then. I rarely remember to keep totes in my truck, and if the wife calls and asks me to pick something up, I definitely will not have on one me.
Or Germany and Austria. When I stopped at grocery stores in both countries, you had to bring your own bags and bag your own stuff.
Willing to bet that da governor and the proponents of this are just as bad about not re-using as the average citizen.

What happens when the Euro is recognized as being the worthless rag it is?
UCS, I appreciated your article from last night. I just read it this morning. IC datasheets are sometimes difficult for non-engineers to read or use as they have to assume some level of experience and knowledge. Try looking for an application note or white paper on the device type in question.
See below for a App note:
https://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/slpa004?keyMatch=SN74HC595
It is your IC paired on the same chip with 8 power switches. With this chip you can switch more substantial devices. I used something like this for my pinball machine.
I see. (I mean, I was double checking my comment while you were putting this one up)
The timing diagram was the part that took me the longest to sort out in terms of figuring out how to read it.
With regards to the linked app note, it appears to be talking about a different, 20-pin chip. Unless I’m misreading something. I think the search keyed off this line
since that’s the only reference to ‘SN74’ in the document.
You’ll be able to buy a loaf of bread with your reusable plastic bag full of Euros?
You get Weimar for your money!
Nobody should be able to spend a decade studying wealth and ethics. Limits are essential if we want to eradicate authoritarianism and protect social cohesion and humanity.
I bet that guy never had a real job.
Well, she would’ve been coherent at least.
Joe Biden knew VP Kamala Harris ‘not up to the job’, preferred Michigan Govenor Gretchen Whitmer as 2020 running mate: book
Joe Biden caved into public pressure in picking Kamala Harris as his running mate in 2020, despite favouring another candidate, a new book has revealed.
He’s the dumbass that put himself in a corner:
“My VP will be a woman of color”, or something along those lines.
There’s always Michelle O.
No MO!
He said woman of color…
Transwomen are…
Harris was the result of interparty negotiations, IE the black community (read Senator Clyburn) would support him if she was on the ticket, thinking he would drop out after one term and she would be a shoe in.
Funny how that worked out.
Actually Terry McCunteface lost so bad they couldn’t steal it via NoVa without being obvious.
Election Denier Joe Biden: “Hello, Virginia! And the real governor, Terry McAuliffe!”
So breathless calls have been made by the media about cognitive decline right of Biden? RIGHT?
McAuliffe’s such a slimeball that he makes Newsome look desirable by comparison. Definitely one of the most unprincipled political operatives around and that’s not easy to be.
Awfully smooth delivery for Joe – are we really sure that isn’t an AI fake?
Found CSPAN clip, he said it.
Except this is the exact thing that scotus ruled on. As in it is a state, not federal, issue. Dishonest cuntes.
On Tuesday, the DNC announced that it would drive a mobile billboard around the University of New Hampshire today. It will display a video that bashes former president Donald Trump and Nikki Haley over their records on abortion rights.
The mobile billboard highlights clips of Trump and Haley speaking about abortion, including the former president saying, “I’m the one that got rid of Roe v. Wade.” It also reads, “They share the same extreme MAGA position on abortion: A NATIONAL BAN.”
I just want to take a moment to reflect on the fact that such a tactic has the best traction on a college campus.
It kinda says something if this is needed on a college campus. Those are strongholds of D power, and this should be a gimme.
In other words, if they are being forced to use R tactics in such areas, something has gone awry.
This sounds like a lie to me but I don’t have proof. I wonder if they do.
Proof? You don’t need proof!
You just need to feel it!
“I hear of offers like this being made all the time.”
Where can I find a lawyer like this who will pay my bills for me?

“The countries with nuclear weapons are engaged in modernization programs that threaten to create a new nuclear arms race,” Bronson said. “Earth experienced its hottest year on record and massive floods, fires and other climate-related disasters have taken root. And lack of action on climate change threatens billions of lives and livelihoods.”
Bronson cited recent advances in artificial intelligence as another concern, saying they “raise a variety of questions about how to control a technology that could improve or threaten civilization in countless ways.”
Look on the bright side for once. All we have to do is turn everything over to artificial intelligence. All our problems will be solved.
Sloopy I enjoyed the music links. Wing was the AM radio background noise from my youth, in a good way.
Gutted
In a move that jolted the journalism industry Tuesday, the Los Angeles Times, one of the leading newspapers in the country, laid off more than 115 journalists, a gash that affects several journalists of color.
Nearly a quarter of its newsroom staff members were given notice Tuesday that their last days with the company would be in March.
“The company has reneged on its promises to diversify its ranks since young journalists of color have been disproportionately affected,” the Los Angeles Times Guild said in a statement Tuesday. “The Black, AAPI, and Latino Caucuses have suffered devastating losses. Voluntary buyouts could have helped prevent this, but that’s not the path the company chose.”
The team behind De Los, a vertical the Times launched in 2023 to cover the city’s 49% Latino population, was gutted. Jeong Park, who was hired to cover Asian American communities in 2022, was also laid off.
Kevin Merida, who is Black, resigned this month as a prelude of what was to come. The Times’ owner, billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong, said the paper and Merida had “mutually agreed” to part ways, but the announcement was stunning.
Managing editors Sara Yasin, who is Palestinian American, and Shani Hilton, who is Black, also recently resigned.
Could any of them write?

, a gash that affects several journalists of color.
Fuck off, racist.
Misogynist too.
It’s getting really fucking tedious.
They wrote long-form stories nobody wanted to read on subjects very few people cared about. It is the lefty way. I don’t even have to research their work to know this to be true.
The Times has a seniority clause, which puts the most recent hires on the chopping block first when cuts would have to be made. After the police murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May 2020, the paper — like many outlets — invested in covering marginalized communities. Almost four years later, those workers were among the most recent hires.
What a surprise.
Because nobody covered “marginalized communities” before Floyd’s overdose and journalists of marginalization are the only ones who can show the rest of us idiots the way.
Apparently, “Marginalized Communities” don’t subscribe to the LA Times?
Whudathunk?

How reputable a vendor is Digikey? And what countries do their supply chains come from?
Not sure what countries their supply chains run through, but I have bought man components from them.
I am surprised you bought no woman components, or is that what the dead hooker was really for?
+1 Katya Kazanova

Sometimes a man has to do what a man has to do.
We use Digikey and Mouser and, sometimes, eBay
All have issues if you are ordering small quantities.
Digikey is based in NW Minnesoda, so I give it a slight edge.
Aside from Not Adahn’s company, does anyone make electrical components in the US anymore?
I’d be happy knowing it came from Taiwan rather than the Mainland, or Korea, or, Japan. I just want to minimize my involvement with the CCP.
Good vendor.
They keep close tabs in supply chains to eliminate fakes.
They note country of origin. For lots of components you have little choice but to use mainland China, however.

To make sure you’re paying the original printer manufacturer for their highest profit margin components.
I am keeping my old Dell color laserjet. Costs me about $20 to refill once or twice a year. It was an early wifi enabled printer too, which is handy.
I’m still using a Brother laser printer that’s probably over a decade old. I’ve changed the toner… twice?
The tech is actually kinda cool, but HP is getting a reputation for being those assholes trying to subscribe you to a service to use your own equipment, which is well deserved reputational baggage.
About face
Democratic lawmakers in Oregon on Tuesday unveiled a sweeping new bill that would undo a key part of the state’s first-in-the-nation drug decriminalization law, a recognition that public opinion has soured on the measure amid rampant public drug use during the fentanyl crisis.
The bill would recriminalize the possession of small amounts of drugs as a low-level misdemeanor, enabling police to confiscate them and crack down on their use on sidewalks and in parks, its authors said. It also aims to make it easier to prosecute dealers, to access addiction treatment medication, and to obtain and keep housing without facing discrimination for using that medication.
“It’s the compromise path, but also the best policy that we can come up with to make sure that we are continuing to keep communities safe and save lives,” state Sen. Kate Lieber, a Portland Democrat, told The Associated Press.
Voters passed the pioneering decriminalization law, Measure 110, with 58% support in 2020. But Democratic legislators who championed it as a way to treat addiction as a public health matter, not a crime, are now contending with one of the nation’s largest spikes in overdose deaths, along with intensifying pressure from Republicans and growing calls from a well-funded campaign group to overhaul it.
Researchers say it’s too soon to determine whether the law has contributed to the state’s deadly overdose surge, and supporters of the measure say the decadeslong approach of arresting people for possessing and using drugs didn’t work.
Those damn Republicans and their dark money Puritan co-conspirators just won’t give the program time to work. They just need more non profit drug counselors and addiction advocates.
But Democratic legislators who championed it as a way to treat addiction as a public health matter, not a crime, are now contending with one of the nation’s largest spikes in overdose deaths, along with intensifying pressure from Republicans and growing calls from a well-funded campaign group to overhaul it.
What a sentence. May as well just accuse the Republicans of shooting all of these addicts dead.
Along with, you know, the public. Those idiots who are getting fed up with junkies and their piles of needles and petty crime.
How dare they want to change it. It’s perfect just the way it is!
Why not go full legalization instead of decriminalization? At least that has a chance of working.
Im not convinced that this isn’t exactly what they wanted to happen.
Perhaps. It also has zero chance of passing.
Yeah, after Tampax only narrowly avoided losing the state to a Republican, the left is looking at shoring up the weak spots.
Advocacy groups that have backed Oregon’s decriminalization law opposed the proposal to once again make “personal use” possession a crime.
“You don’t need a criminal penalty. You need services, and you need to make sure that you’re investing in those services,” said Tera Hurst, executive director of the Health Justice Recovery Alliance. “Criminalization is not an effective tool to getting people into treatment, and it does more harm than good.”
How are we supposed to profit from the suffering of these people if you cut us out of the loop?
Harlan Coben shows:
Someone must love these books, since Netflix has made seven of them into series. I watched one and was unimpressed overall, but was intrigued by how different it was than a typical mystery show.
Then I watched the second and it was exactly the same as the first one. Seriously, you could generate these things with a few tables from the 1st edition AD&D DMG:
1. Roll 1d10+5 for the number of characters
2. For each character roll 1d10 and consult the Dark Secret subtable (1 no secret, 2-6 adultery, 7 assault, 8 arson, 9 murder, 0 roll again twice adding 1 to each result.)
3. For each Dark Secret, roll 1d10. On 0, the secret becomes a plot point.
…
I’ll say I’m somewhat interested in the new murder mystery that Hulu has out called Death and Other Details. I believe it’ll be on me and the girlfriend’s list after we finish Reacher (S2) and Only Murders in the Building (S3).
Mrs OBE was watching Death and Other Details. We are just so turned off by shows that have no ability to show sex without it being borderline soft-core porn.
A hardcore fan, eh? Don’t worry, they’ll move on to straight up full penetration soon enough.
Yeah, fuck that borderline stuff.
Hadn’t heard of that one, definitely will check it out.

Worse than mustard gas
Alabama is set to carry out the nation’s first execution via nitrogen hypoxia this week, but critics are warning of the dangers to those in and outside the execution chamber if the gas leaks.
Kenneth Eugene Smith, 58, is scheduled to be executed on Thursday. He was one of two men convicted in the 1988 murder-for-hire slaying of Elizabeth Sennett in northwestern Alabama.
Smith’s attorneys are asking courts to block the execution, arguing that Alabama’s bid to execute Smith after botching an earlier attempt using lethal injection violates the United States Constitution’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment.
A federal judge rejected Smith’s request to stop the execution earlier this month, and the case will most likely end up before the U.S. Supreme Court, which has been unwilling to stop executions at the last minute in recent years.
According to Alabama’s protocol, a face mask will be placed over Smith’s nose and mouth to replace breathable air with pure nitrogen, depriving him of oxygen and causing him to die. The protocol says the nitrogen gas would be administered for 15 minutes or “five minutes following a flatline indication on the EKG, whichever is longer.”
Alabama Solicitor General Edmund LaCour told federal appeals court judges on Friday that nitrogen hypoxia is “the most painless and humane method of execution known to man.” In court filings, the state has said it would “cause unconsciousness within seconds and cause death within minutes.”
I’m opposed to government revenge murder, but the huffing and puffing over an inert gas is something to behold.
Can’t they just lock him in a room with a working furnace or something? The CO2 should knock him dead in no time.
Gas stove.
I was curious so I scanned the article, at no point does it mention that Nitrogen makes up most of the air we breathe. So yet another example of agenda journalism, even if it’s an agenda I mostly agree with.
Nitrogen narcosis, a danger in diving above 3 atmospheres, is said to be somewhat pleasant. Not sure how that would work at 1 atmosphere.
I’m surprised Alabama didn’t go with CO2, to prove just how deadly it truly is.
I get that you’re cracking a joke, but the entire human “I’m suffocating” reflex is driven by increased levels of blood carbon dioxide. Low oxygen – body doesn’t send any signals. Too much CO2, you get all the awful choking and flailing and panicking. That’s why Nitrogen Hypoxia is probably the most humane way of gassing someone.
OBE- Was your wife able to sell her grooming business as a going concern in Vegas before you left?
That was you, right? Will she start another one?
Yeah she sold it. She isn’t sure yet on what to start up here. Streets are narrower so probably not a mobile groomer, but never know.
entire human “I’m suffocating” reflex is driven by increased levels of blood carbon dioxide.
Did not know.
