Tyrannosaurus Rex May Have Actually Been Three Separate Dinosaurs

Ever since the first Tyrannosaurus skeleton was put on display in 1905, the tyrant lizard has captivated the world. Now, researchers say that the Tyrannosaurus may have actually developed into three distinct species beyond just the infamous Tyrannosaurus Rex.

A team of three researchers led by paleontologist Gregory Paul said on Monday that variations of about three dozen fossils indicated that two additional species deserved recognition. Paul and the fellow researchers dubbed these two new species Tyrannosaurus Imperator and Tyrannosaurus Regina.

“After over a century of all specimens being placed into one species without the issue being carefully examined, the first and only analysis finds that the variation in Tyrannosaurus is beyond the norms for dinosaurs, and is distributed over time in a manner that indicates that Darwinian speciation from one (species) to two new species had occurred before the final dinosaur extinction cut off further evolution,” Paul said in an abstract published to Evolutionary Biology, first reported by Reuters.

Apple TV+ announces “Neuromancer,” new drama based on the multi-award-winning science fiction novel by William Gibson

Apple TV+ announced today that it will expand its acclaimed slate of science fiction offerings with “Neuromancer,” a new 10-episode drama based on the award-winning novel of the same name by William Gibson. It will be created for television by Graham Roland (“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” “Dark Winds”) and JD Dillard (“Devotion,” “The Outsider,” “Sleight”). A co-production between Skydance Television and Anonymous Content, “Neuromancer” will also be produced by Drake’s DreamCrew Entertainment, with Roland serving as showrunner and Dillard set to direct the pilot episode.

The series will follow a damaged, top-rung super-hacker named Case who is thrust into a web of digital espionage and high stakes crime with his partner Molly, a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes aiming to pull a heist on a corporate dynasty with untold secrets.

“We’re incredibly excited to be bringing this iconic property to Apple TV+,” said creators and executive producers Roland and Dillard. “Since we became friends nearly 10 years ago, we’ve looked for something to team up on, so this collaboration marks a dream come true. ‘Neuromancer’ has inspired so much of the science fiction that’s come after it and we’re looking forward to bringing television audiences into Gibson’s definitive ‘cyberpunk’ world.”

Fuck. Off. Go ruin some other novel, you shitbags.

There have been threats to fuck up Neuromancer and Snow Crash for decades now but they keep falling through. May the nightmare never fall on us. The Expanse gave me a glimmer of hope there was a new dawn of people interested in making science fiction film and TV. The shitnado of Altered Carbon stubbed that out.

Michelle Obama’s office says the former first lady ‘will not be running for president’ in 2024

WASHINGTON — Former President Barack Obama has said he’s “all in” for President Joe Biden’s re-election effort. But a question nagging at many Democrats is what role his popular spouse might play.

Democrats nervously looking ahead to November say they want to see Michelle Obama playing a bigger role in the campaign. Some even whisper about the possibility that she might replace a politically hobbled incumbent on the 2024 ticket this summer — making her a fantasy candidate for members of both parties, albeit for different reasons.

Supporters of Republican front-runner Donald Trump have fixated on the notion of Obama’s swooping in to replace Biden in attempt to diminish the president’s political viability and stoke the GOP base.

In a statement to NBC News, the former first lady’s office tried to rein in imaginations on the right and the left, making it clear her 2024 plans don’t include running for office.

“As former First Lady Michelle Obama has expressed several times over the years, she will not be running for president,” said Crystal Carson, director of communications for her office. “Mrs. Obama supports President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ re-election campaign.”

Big Mike’s not going to save you, AWFLs. You’re married to Grandpa Joe; you made your adjustable bed, so have fun being pawed at and drool on in it.

I was this years old when I learned magnets won’t stick to stainless steel.

    • Tres Cool

Depending on the strength of the magnet, and what flavor of stainless (ferritic vs. austenitic), they can.

But most of the time, not enough iron.

      • DenverJ

Huh. I always thought steel was just fancy iron. Hey, y’all aren’t gonna make me pay 25$ to comment, are you, like TOS?

I should have specified adaptations. But still, there aren’t many good original movies either. Tender wheat in a blizzard of chaff.

      • Nephilium

Depending on the definition, I would say Alita: Battle Angel would qualify as a decent adaptation, and then there’s the Dune movies. I’ve never read the books for Children of Men, Edge of Tomorrow (Live. Die. Repeat), the Martian, or Ready Player One, but found them all at least moderately entertaining.

Neuromancer should be a stream that looks like an empty TV channel.

    • Tonio

You mean a black screen with the words “NO SIGNAL?” You just made me realize that another reference from my childhood is lost on the young. They will never truly appreciate the “snow” of an analog TV on an empty channel.

      • Nephilium

I just brought that up at work (in a discussion of static). There is one thing still keeping people aware of the blast of static/snow, and that’s the transitions from Robot Chicken.

I didn’t like the first season very much. They had a perfectly enjoyable and understandable plot and they changed it around for no real reason. (I could give you an hour-long rant on the shit they fucked up.)

Season 1 of Game of Thrones. I feel like they only read the first novel before writing the scripts, so they made cut decisions that were totally fine for book 1/season 1.

Then they prepared for season 2 and were like, “Oh fuck, we cut out key characters, how are we going to shoehorn them back in?”

    • Fatty Bolger

Yeah, season one was very good, even though they inexplicably reversed the roles of characters and organizations from what they were in the novel. The second season was garbage (but more liked by critics, natch). Shame, because some cool shit happens in the books that they could have used. Also, I like Anthony Mackie, but his nice guy persona was all wrong to play Kovacs.

  13. Richard

Gosh darn it all to heck. I make a comment just when the tide changes. Please forgive me for going OT so soon but:

Greetings from Vermont. At yesterday’s primary election Nikki Haley got a clear and unmistakable mandate of 50.2% proving that Donald Trump’s political career is finished! Now let me pull a number from my derriere: 99% of those in VT who voted for Haley will vote for whoever the D’s run for president in November.

Vermont has an open primary which I think is a constitutional violation of the Right of Free Association. Accordingly when asked what primary ballot I wanted I requested D. Now, as in all the elections in the last 30 years, my name again has a “D” next to it written down (on two of of the voter rolls) or circled (on the other two).

This year instead of voting for the D’s biggest nutjob I wrote in “Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.” hoping that *any* mention of him will piss of the D’s. Vermont’s own Bernie Sanders is the biggest nutjob of all but I’d vote for him in the D presidential primary if he was allowed to run.

For the general election I’m going to continue my long standing policy and hold my nose and vote for whatever nutjob the L’s nominate. It’s nutjobs all the way down!

    • Brochettaward

I wish the L’s were nominating nutjobs who could spread the message of libertarianism. I’ll never forget that in the most impactful election for the party you’ll probably see they put up Johnson and Bill fucking Weld.

      • Chafed

I met Gary at one of his fundraisers. I liked him. He was liberarianish enough for me and better as a candidate than most nominated by the LP.

      • creech

Unfortunately, spreading the message in any meaningful way to tens of millions of voters is going to take tens of millions of $$$. And the LP is not going to attract anyone who can do both. Or do you have somebody in mind?

      • Brochettaward

How much free air time did Trump get in 2016? Being outlandish in the eyes of the mainstream media (not hard for a libertarian) and entertaining will do more than any amount of bullshit normal political messaging through conventional methods.

You need someone who can grab the public’s attention and move the overton window our way.

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

        Maybe dance on stage naked?

      • cyto

Would be sound advice if the press were the ones deciding what to cover.

      • Rat on a train

It’s easier to find a major-party reject with name recognition than to spread the message.

      • juris imprudent

The message is out there – and the people don’t want it. Jesus, don’t be like the fucking progtards and walk around claiming you represent the majority of the people in the country (when you are a fringe in one party).

      • Brochettaward

Yes, Juris. Every single person out there is already familiar with esoteric libertarian principles. How could I be so blind?

No one claimed to represent the majority of anything. But why even run a candidate for a libertarian party? What should the goal be, Juris? If it’s putting an empty suit on stage who will say things that are basically 90% in line with the mainstream Republican Party, but mildly pro-weed and pro-abortion, what the fuck is the point? Why would anyone think that’s really going to peel off voters from the mainstream parties or force any change in the status quo?

So I’ll go back to what I said. A third party candidate with no chance of winning doesn’t need experience. They don’t need be buttoned up and serious. They need to be charismatic, interesting, someone who can sell people on ideas.

      • Nephilium

What the Libertarian Party needs to do is stop the quixotic runs at the Presidency and start with school boards, city councils, state legislatures, etc.

      • cyto

        Would be nice.

I wonder if you could more than 1 real libertarian to form a quorum

      • juris imprudent

Elections are never going to solve the problems, because we are getting the govt the people vote for. It’s the people that are the problem.

Things will change when they must – because they can’t continue. Until then, it’s not going to change. I’ll be happy to check out before the day arrives that change must happen.

      • robc

Badnarik is my favorite LP candidate I have voted for.

And…uh, yeah. Not so much on spreading the message. But he was awesome otherwise.

      • DenverJ

Johnson was a solid pick. Bill fucking Weld… not so much.

I’m thinking about buying Bitcoin, but hoping/waiting for it to dip a bit. It looks like it’s about to start another major boom cycle. Yea, it doubled. But I’m talking about exponential growth over the next year.

I think it could also be something more permanent than past boom cycles because, for better or most likely worse, it’s been institutionalized now.

    • R.J.

It is more permanent. Any dip could be much smaller in the future. Definitely bitcoin and gold are things you should buy as you can. Not just for investment, but for money in the future.

“San Francisco voters pivoted away from their progressive reputation Tuesday night, as a number of ballot measures meant to rein in crime and drug use overwhelmingly won the vote of city residents.

San Franciscans voted in favor of two measures – Measures E and F – which will, respectively, expand some police powers in the city and require drug screenings for adults receiving welfare.

Proposition E will, among other things, make it easier for police officers to pursue suspects. It will also provide the force with new cameras and drones that are meant to make their daily job of fighting crime easier and more effective.

And Proposition F is designed to help adults struggling with drug addiction, by telling them that they will only remain eligible for cash welfare assistance from the city if they enroll in a treatment program. Drug testing will be required to ensure they comply. ”

What they’re worried about is that Trump is going to go full on Sulla if he wins, though they lack the historical knowledge to get that reference. They know they’ve used the power to go after him and his supporters, and are just worried about the power falling into the wrong hands.

Hillary wasn’t prosecuted for her corruption because people got into Trump’s ear and said it’s a bad look to go after your political opponent like that, and he probably believed it was a courtesy that would be extended to him. That may not work this time given the last four years.

For some reason the Georgia legislature is holding televised hearings into the Fulton DA office.

They had the blond lady from the Rico trial who filed the motion to disqualify. Watching her for a few minutes…. that chick is sharp. Able to recall and relay minute details about a complex case over months.

They had some idiot democrat trying to discredit her. I was amazed at the way she handled him. Never got argumentative. Never hit back. And never belittled his idiotic questions.

He had a briefing (probably from Willis) about what to get her on, and even after she completely obliterated the path he was on, he kept asking about it.

No way I would have held up. I would have been like “as I just told you less than 60 seconds ago…”

Not her. Just pretended like it was a legitimate question and knocked it down again.

I wasn’t super impressed with her interrogation of witnesses (good, but not great), but dang, was she good again handling a bunch of politicians.

    • Ownbestenemy

Mrs Merchant the lawyer…yah..Im gonna simp. Smart, quick, impressive. If you watch it, her body language during that guy’s questions was like a G leaning back in the chair. The whole Wade/Willis debacle is because of her. She did all the investigative work and had Bradley dishing her details until he was threatened not once, but twice and a suggestion of a third time to continue to lie for those two asshats.

      • cyto

The third shoe to drop for him is probably sexual assault charges filed by Willis. I might have developed amnesia too.

Really shocking that they went there in their drive to discredit him.

      • Ownbestenemy

He should have realized at that point, the defense had things buttoned up and even if they dropped, it was evident. Maybe some birds-eye view opinions on that.

      • Pine_Tree

My read of her Bradley text convo was basically that he was just totally blown away by an attractive female texting with him and pretending to be interested in what he said, and got all chatty to try to impress her and never thought for a second about spilling the beans.

And that was her plan from the start. Guys get real dumb talking to pretty girls. She did a great job with it.

Could have been..I think he got burned in the grift and was ready to speak.

You won’t have Dean Phillips to kick around anymore

U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota ended his long-shot 2024 Democratic presidential bid on Wednesday after failing to win a primary contest against President Joe Biden.

Phillips told WCCO Radio in Minneapolis that he was endorsing Biden, saying “there is only one choice” in an expected fall matchup with Republican Donald Trump.

      • Tres Cool

Depends on the president. Since it seems to be an asian design, H. Ross Perot*? Sure.
        William H. Taft? Not likely.

*I really would love to have seen that little lunatic get into office.

Dozens of cities along the US coastline are sinking at alarming rates, leaving them far more exposed to devastating flooding from sea level rise than previously thought, scientists reported Wednesday.

As oceans rise and the coasts sink, up to 343,000 acres of land will be exposed to destructive flooding by 2050, from hazards such as hurricanes, coastal storms and shoreline erosion, according to the study published in the journal Nature. In a worst-case scenario, roughly 1 in 50 people in the 32 cities analyzed could be exposed to flood threats.

According to the researchers, this is the first study to combine the increasing threat of sea level rise with high-resolution measurements of sinking areas to determine which coastal locations are most at-risk of inundation. “Every single result of this research is novel,” said Manoochehr Shirzaei, a geophysicist at Virginia Tech and co-author of the study.

    Dozens! Sinking! Rising! Inundation!

    Saints preserve us.

“…roughly 1 in 50 people in the 32 cities analyzed could be exposed to flood threats.”

It just wouldn’t be scary if they wrote “but 98% will be fine”.

“According to the researchers, this is the first study to combine the increasing threat of sea level rise with high-resolution measurements of sinking areas to determine which coastal locations are most at-risk of inundation.”

That is definitely false, people have been studying that for decades.

    • Suthenboy

How tiresome this shit becomes. It is always worse than they previously thought.
Guess what? Increasingly shrill calls for panic over things that does not make these predictions more believable.

  24. The Late P Brooks

The impact of sinking land has been overlooked, said Leonard Ohenhen, the lead author of the study and a doctoral researcher at Virginia Tech. “When you have these two different processes laid out — land sinking on the coast and sea rising on the ocean — you’re going to have a lot more areas that will be susceptible to flooding in the future,” he told CNN.

People keep poking holes in our “rising seas” claims, so we’re going to to come at this from two directions at once.

    • Compelled Speechless

“So we’re going to to come at this from two directions at once.”

That’s how the groomers suggested they do it.

  25. The Late P Brooks

Groundwater extraction is one of the primary drivers of coastal subsidence. Cities and industries are pumping water from underground aquifers faster than it can be replenished, a situation exacerbated by climate change-fueled drought. Excessive pumping lowers the water table and causes the overlying land to sink.

The same thing happens when oil and gas are extracted from underground. On and offshore, the Gulf Coast is dotted with oil and gas facilities, which not only contribute to the climate crisis that is exacerbating sea level rise but are also one of the leading causes of land subsidence in the region.

Other causes include seismic activity and soil compaction, either naturally from the weight of accumulating sediments over time or from heavy buildings pressing down on the ground, causing land to steadily sink. This is a particular problem in areas where new coastal land has been created over the years by backfilling with sediment.

What about witches? These people sound like medieval necromancers trying to explain why Farmer Olaffson’s cow went dry.

    • Suthenboy

Every bit of that save sedimentation is horseshit.

      • Gustave Lytton

And a lot of the problems with backfill is wrong soil (Sandy) over wrong base (former landfills). Oops.

    • Lackadaisical

Eh, for once they’re not totally wrong. Not sure about the relative attribution of subsidence causes, it is very location dependent.

“Other causes include seismic activity and soil compaction, either naturally from the weight of accumulating sediments over time or from heavy buildings pressing down on the ground, causing land to steadily sink.”

Someone should warn her about all the weight from the coastal cities causing the entire continent to tip over.

    Work, shockingly, was quite smooth.

About that Current in Carmel “Tryout” for the editing gig? Well. They’re backed up cuz special editions and…Monday, March 11, the Indiana gubernatorial candidates are having a debate right here in town! I technically DO know the current Lt. Gov. I’m going to get my end sorted at the event, but tix are sold out. I’ll see what I can find out ’round town, and I’ll be there to talk to folk. Hopefully get some re-act quotes. I’m gonna take the Tryout to THEM! That is a good project. I took next Monday off. I’ll see what I can scrounge until then to get more ins.
