So, I signed the permission slip to allow my youngest to view the eclipse at school.  The simply stipulated he bring his own glasses.  No problem, I told the wife that I found some available at REI and I could pick some up while I am out.  She said she bought a box from Amazon.  Cool.  By the time I dropped off my son at school yesterday it occurred to me it was never delivered.  My wife found them later in the mailbox…

She ran them over to school, but I presume he borrowed a pair from a buddy.

Brazilian court tries to push Musk around.  Musk responds by being Musk.

Not sure how the online right will handle this one.  The Milei simps and the Thatcher simps will just have to fight it out.

Man, once we’re done reliving the 70’s, the new 80’s is gonna be lit.

“As a result he said “the Texas Nationalist Movement believes that the only way to secure our border with the United States of Mexico is to no longer share a border with the United States of Mexico” and thus would begin offering aid to secessionist groups in the north of the country.

Miller commented: “Many years ago I learned of a movement that was developing within the northern states of Mexico whose goal was to separate from the United States of Mexico and become self-governing independent nation states.”

You need to get rid of the cartels first, otherwise they will just be independent nation states controlled by the cartels.

    • SDF-7

If we’re going to screw with Mexican sovereignty I’d rather we get their southern border to secede and just stop the inflow on the narrow point. Seems easier.

Aleading Texas nationalist group has warned Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador it will begin actively supporting secessionist movements in his country in response to what it argues is his failure to control illegal migration into the Lone Star State.

Daniel Miller, president of the Texas Nationalist Movement (TNM), delivered the message to Obrador in videos published on social media in both English and Spanish. The TNM is campaigning for Texas to leave the United States and become a fully independent nation.

A new Falklands War, this time a bum-fight. The Brits can’t get their carriers out of port while Argentina can’t really afford a navy or air force. The EuroFighters based there are probably enough to prevent Argentina from doing something stupid.

I’m admittedly not British — but since I don’t think they need coaling stations anymore and the Royal Navy can (as you mention) barely sortie… I’d be willing to talk to Argentina about the islands.

But maybe they need the last of the Thatcher generation to die out so it doesn’t hurt national pride (not like they give a shit about it in other ways that I can tell… but maybe).

      • juris imprudent

If the Brits can muster a little national pride, they shouldn’t fucking waste it on some lousy south Atlantic islands. But frankly, I’m more inclined to believe that national pride would be treated as an mental health disorder there.

The name of this manga, “Gintama” (銀魂) , is actually a pun on the Japanese word “Kintama” (金玉), which means “testicles”. The kanji for “Kintama” is written with the kanji “gold” (kin – 金) and “ball” (tama – 玉). “Gintama”, however, is written with the kanji “silver” (gin – 銀) and “soul” (tama – 魂). Though “Gintama” literally means “silver soul”, the fact that it’s one letter off from saying “testicles” was intentional as a joke. Such a title fits the manga’s strange sense of humor.

“This NYC chicken joint employs cashiers Zooming in from the Philippines — and still wants you to tip!

Every cashier wants a tip these days — but what if they’re on the other side of the world?

A new restaurant chain in New York City is outsourcing staff to the Philippines, using screens with hostesses on Zoom calls instead of in-person employees to greet customers and help with check-out.

The shops — which specialize in fried chicken and ramen — are taking advantage of the massive wealth gap between New York City, where the minimum wage is $16 per hour and a Southeast Asian nation where hourly pay is closer to $3.75.

But when customers check out at Sansan Chicken, Sansan Ramen, or Yaso Kitchen — with locations in Manhattan, Queens, and Jersey City — they’re still prompted to add a tip of up to 18% on top of their bill.”

    https://nypost.com/2024/04/09/us-news/nyc-restaurants-use-zoom-cashiers-from-philippines/

Who tips at a take-out restaurant?

    • Brochettaward

When people ask me for a tip, I tell them to First more. And that they’re welcome.

    • Toxteth O'Grady

Does any of that reach the Philippines?

      • Common Tater

        Maybe?

“On a recent afternoon at Sansan Chicken in Long Island City, a reporter for The Post was greeted by Pie, a 33-year-old hostess who works from her living room in the Philippine city of Subic. The cheerful remote worker said she is employed by a company called Happy Cashier and that she enjoys her work. Pie declined to disclose how much she was paid but said customers sometimes leave generous tips despite the fact that she’s not actually there in person. Once, she got $40 at Yaso Kitchen in Jersey City, she said — adding that she splits tips with her manager and kitchen staff at the restaurant….

The dynamics of the operation seem to be cloaked in secrecy. It’s not clear if the hostesses work for the restaurant or a third-party company that hires them out. It’s also not clear who owns the restaurants, and how much the hostesses are getting paid. The Post could not reach the businesses’ owner, and employees would not divulge information about their bosses when a reporter asked.”

      • Homple

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

I’ll leave a few bucks. I like to think it goes to the kitchen staff.

    • Sean

Not fucking 18%. A couple bucks.

      • Common Tater

If it’s a regular restaurant with a waitstaff, I’ll tip 15 – 20%, same if I ate there. I don’t tip at all at Subway, Dunkin Donuts, etc.

I think all this take-out tipping started with Starbucks.

      • SDF-7

Tipping in general has gotten out of control — I don’t know if it is a perception of “poor me… they don’t pay me, you should!” guilt tripping or what… but I distinctly remember 10% being standard, 15 if someone is really good… now it is “Recommended 20% for anything and everything — feel free to go higher!” because I suppose that’s easy to program into the apps and like the spam emails — if enough folks just go along….

    All aboard the Bidenomics train(wreck)

U.S. small-business confidence slipped to the lowest level in more than 11 years in March amid rising concerns about inflation, according to a survey on Tuesday.
The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) said its Small Business Optimism Index fell 0.9 point to 88.5 last month, the lowest level since December 2012. It was the 27th straight month the index was below the 50-year average of 98.

Twenty-five percent of owners reported inflation was their single most important problem in operating their business, reflecting higher input and labor costs, up 2 points from February. The share of businesses raising average selling prices rose 7 points from the prior month.
That aligns with a pick-up in consumer prices in the first two months of the year. Price increases were prevalent in the finance, retail, construction, wholesale and transportation sectors. There was also an increase in the share of businesses raising compensation even as demand for labor is cooling.

The NFIB reported last week that hiring plans among small businesses in March were the weakest since May 2020.

If those people don’t know how to run their businesses properly they deserve to go broke.

    • Sean

I keep seeing commercials on TV pointing out the rising prices of everything.

Which is bad news for Gropey, IMO.

      • Suthenboy

Malinformation? Maldisinformation? Dismalinformation? Mismalinformation? Misdismal….ah fuck it. I have trouble keep up with the prog word jumble.

“When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, ‘it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.’

’The question is,’ said Alice, ‘whether you can make words mean so many different things.’

’The question is,’ said Humpty Dumpty, ‘which is to be master — that’s all.”

  14. The Late P Brooks

    Deep Thought

Here’s something cheery to consider the next time you use an AI tool. Most people involved in artificial intelligence think it could end humanity. That’s the bad news. The good news is that the odds of it happening vary wildly depending on who you listen to.

p(doom) is the “probability of doom” or the chances that AI takes over the planet or does something to destroy us, such as create a biological weapon or start a nuclear war. At the cheeriest end of the p(doom) scale, Yann LeCun, one of the “three godfathers of AI”, who currently works at Meta, places the chances at <0.01%, or less likely than an asteroid wiping us out.

Sadly, no one else is even close to being so optimistic. Geoff Hinton, one of the other three godfathers of AI, says there’s a 10% chance AI will wipe us out in the next 20 years, and Yoshua Bengio, the third of the three godfathers of AI, raises the figure to 20%.

    ——-

Elon Musk, speaking in a "Great AI Debate" seminar at the four-day Abundance Summit earlier this month, said, "I think there's some chance that it will end humanity. I probably agree with Geoff Hinton that it's about 10% or 20% or something like that,” before adding, "I think that the probable positive scenario outweighs the negative scenario."

In response, Yampolskiy told Business Insider he thought Musk was "a bit too conservative" in his guesstimate and that we should abandon development of the technology now because it would be near impossible to control AI once it becomes more advanced.

"Not sure why he thinks it is a good idea to pursue this technology anyway," Yamploskiy said. "If he [Musk] is concerned about competitors getting there first, it doesn't matter as uncontrolled superintelligence is equally bad, no matter who makes it come into existence."

    I’m shaking in my boots.

    • The Other Kevin

I take this all with a grain of salt. As it turns out, people are really, really bad at predicting the future.

      • Compelled Speechless

If you’re a fan of Critical Drinker, you should know Little Platoon. He appears with Drinker on streams, but he’s got a more academic approach. Truthfully, he’s just smarter by miles.

Anywho, he compares Frank Herbert and Isaac Asimov in terms of political philosophy. There’s good clips of each of them explaining their philosophy. Asimov sounds like your modern prog who believes that we can have perfect central planning and purely scientific bureaucracy, it’s just a matter of putting the right people in charge.

Herbert on the other hand actually understands power and what humans who have it actually behave like and is extremely skeptical of anyone that tries to predict the future or plan society. I knew I liked Dune, but I had no idea how much I liked Herbert himself.

      • OBJ FRANKELSON

Flagellantism was a 14th-century movement, consisting of penitents in the Catholic Church. It began as a Christian pilgrimage and was later condemned by the Catholic Church as heretical. The followers were noted for including public flagellation in their rituals. This was a common practice during the Black Death, or the Great Plague.

A Firster who can no longer have an erection lasting over 3 hours, who can no longer produce the payload needed to drop mad Firsts upon the world, is no Firster at all. To have the power to First stolen from you….

Put in face-to-face notice, written prior, that Friday, April 12 will be my last day at the after school daycare bullshit known as “Extended School Enrichment.” I thought about giving them an extra day or two after Boss mentioned something. At the end of the day, my face broke out with some redness it kinda does sometimes — Directly caused this time by dealing with my generation’s decision to foster all this shit. It’s like Korea, but instead of actually LEARNING at schools all day, these kids are just baby-sat. The parents get to pat themselves on the back! And that’s all that matters. Yuck. No more, say I. Great incentive. Next contract starts April 22 and will be nuts. Next week I gotta set up my office and get Ready Set.

I’m gonna be bouncing up to Buchanan, MI to pick up supplies. I may be going on quite a fun Day Trip or maybe a short mini vacation. I hung out with the ex last night. Welcome/Goodbye hug and that’s it. We watched the Yankees win and thankfully not the Cubs do whatever it is I don’t want to rethink… Fuck it. I’m fucked and so’s she, but both in the best ways for the two of us. How/why could I be with someone NOT as half-fucked, half-unicorn as me? Eyes open, but ya only live once. Miss every shot ya don’t take…

Just caught a bit of an interview with Juan Williams, recently fired by NPR.
His take? They are narrow, rigid minded people living completely within a prog bubble with contempt for anyone not in 100% agreement with their radical extreme left view.
    When you have lost Juan…..

The ‘liberals’ who got this ball rolling are now enjoying the fruits of their labor.
