Had a totally decent weekend.  My youngest had a ballgame and played pretty well.  Got a timely hit that kept the rally going, scored a few runs.  The team won their game.  Unfortunately his season ended yesterday on a sour note.  Where he is typically a solid fielder (for a 10 year old) one ball took a weird bounce and flew over his head while playing 2B.  Then the next one came at him fast and he wound up trying to gator mouth a grounder with his throwing hand, and jammed a couple fingers.  Broken play.  It was downhill from there.  His next at bat went the way it normally does:  draws a walk, steals a few bases, slides safely into home on an attempt at a fielder’s choice.  That last one though, he was up third in the last inning and watched awful base running from one teammate followed by a strikeout.  He shanked a pitch to the outside corner towards right field just barely in play—where the 1B dives, rolls, and somehow had the ball a couple steps from the bag.  A shitty way to end the season, but I am no longer worried he wouldn’t find a place on the team or if he can make the cut at next month’s tryouts.

Enough of that— ¡enlaces!

I present to you, the white pill:

Prosecutors said Monday they will not retry an Arizona rancher whose trial in the fatal shooting of a Mexican man on his property ended last week with a deadlocked jury.

The jurors in the trial of George Alan Kelly were unable to reach a unanimous decision on a verdict after more than two days of deliberation. Santa Cruz County Superior Court Judge Thomas Fink declared a mistrial on April 22.

…but it is not all smiles and sunshine.  Its as cringe as a helicopter joke, amirite Murdock?

Mexico is outraged—OUTRAGED, at the raid of their embassy in Ecuador.

Wait, I thought that Barbecue guy was running things in Haiti?

Milei cuts funding for schools, which I think is what this lady is complaining about.  Its hard enough when she’s speaking Spanish, you know?  Also, ¡la motosierra es eterna!

I can’t believe I missed this one—it turns out it is pronounced (((Milei))).

One day, Dave Grohl is going to eat that microphone.  Today is not that day.

    Baseball ends in April?

    • mexican sharpshooter

Average summer temperatures here means it ends in May.

Time to sign up for a travel/tourney team, so you can spend every free moment at a kid baseball diamond.

      • mexican sharpshooter

        No

I just checked, here the High School (OHSAA) baseball season started at the end of March, and the final tournament ends in the middle of June.

      • Sean

        But, it’s a dry heat.

    • The Other Kevin

Hockey is still going. I even have a tournament lined up in four weeks. One year at that tournament it was 90. In Minnesota.

      It gets better…

Gangs now control most of the capital, Port-au-Prince.

They have capitalised on the power vacuum left by the prime minister’s exit and expanded their control over swathes of the country, which has effectively become lawless in places.

Yes, that’s totally different than it was before.

Dumbest masker I’ve ever seen was a guy, in the pit, at a Dropkick Murphys show… wearing a cloth mask.

      • R.J.

But was is a Dropkick Murphys branded mask?

      • Nephilium

Nope. Just a plain white fabric mask. FFS, if you were worried about the ‘vid, why go to the show? Even more importantly, why pay MORE for the pit tickets instead of getting the assigned seating where you would be apart from people?

      • R.J.

I’ll bet you 99% of attendees at a Green Day show wore masks. All branded by Green Day.

      • Nephilium

Yeah, but I was talking about a punk band. 🙂

The girlfriend claims to no longer like Offspring after finding out they fired one of their drummers because he refused (under doctors orders) to get the ‘vid shot. NOFX was selling a shirt at one of their Punk in Drublics that was a yellow shirt, with the caption “Please Tread On Me” (with the snake being crushed by dancers).

“The 2003 Sky1 British reality series ‘There’s Something About Miriam’ flew the boys out to a luxury four-star villa in Ibiza, with the aim of wooing the stunning Mexican model Miriam Rivera, then only 21, for a £10,000 prize and romantic yacht trip.

Yet the punchline of the show was an incredibly cruel one. After Miriam chose her winner, she told the unsuspecting contestants that she was a transgender woman who had not undergone gender-affirming surgery…

The producers had employed a series of underhand tactics to deceive the boys, including offering them an indecipherable contract, deliberately avoiding the use of pronouns, and even eliminating contestants if they began to suspect the truth. As a result, the boys were furious….

But the producers naivety was also shown in their treatment of Miriam herself, who tragically passed away in 2019, which Mexican authorities held to be ‘suicide’ – although her husband has always insisted she was murdered.”

“Five anonymous sources told the Associated Press Tuesday that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will propose changing marijuana from Schedule 1, which has the highest potential for abuse, to Schedule 3, alongside the likes of ketamine and some anabolic steroids.

The proposal, which will be reviewed by the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB), would acknowledge that it has less potential for abuse than some of the nation’s most dangerous drugs like heroin and MDMA.”

It’s quacks, all the way down

I wish people would stop calling Donald Trump a populist. He has, after all, never demonstrated any inclination to help working Americans, and his economic policies really didn’t help — his 2017 tax cut, in particular, was a giveaway to the wealthy. But his behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic showed that he’s as addicted to magical thinking and denial of reality as any petty strongman or dictator, which makes it all too likely that he might preside over the type of problems that result when policies are based on quack economics.

    ——-

What’s really worrisome, however, are indications that a future Trump regime would manipulate monetary policy in pursuit of short-run political advantage, justifying its actions with crank economic doctrines.

Krugabe thinks Trump might attempt to manipulate the economy for his political benefit. That’s so cute.

It’s a good thing Team Biden has never stooped to magical thinking.

    • Gustave Lytton

his 2017 tax cut, in particular, was a giveaway to the wealthy.

Yeah, the doubling of the standard deduction totally didn’t help anyone at the short end. 🙄

But his behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic showed that he’s as addicted to magical thinking and denial of reality

Totally guilty. He listened and deferred to quacks like Fauci and the rest of the pharmaindustrial complex.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

I thought there was no market for young idle opiners anymore.

    • Ted S.

I’ve stated it several times, but I made about $3K more in 2018 than 2017, and the absolute tax burden was within about 20 bucks. I also ran the numbers, and if the Obama-era tax rates had been in force, I would have paid close to $400 more than I did under the Trump rates.
