Move over, I am in a hurry!

8 days ago, my Dad had a stroke. At first it looked like all was going to be as well as you could hope for a 95 year old man – but the last couple days have been rough. Today he is supposed to get out of the hospital, and head over to get some rehab at the ol’ retirement community. By the time you read these, I might be roaring down I-90 to the old hometown to help. I will have been in 7 of the last 8 days, and so when the Illinois Tollway Authority shows a surge in revenue, it is because of me.

Here are some links (you will have to provide your own music today).

  • Chicago has been lurching toward Ultra-Stupidity for years now. I guess we change it from “Chiraq” to Tehran on the Lake now.
  • How about a little piece of good news, for once!
  • Bear vs Bears. Or at least their cars.
  • You people need to get out there and buy more skis!

Comments are open and all yours.

    Sorry about yer dad, Swiss.

OT – were you trying to find an Android Auto dongle that worked with ancient versions of Android?

      https://www.androidcentral.com/accessories/carsifi-review

This one seems to have the reverse problem. They haven’t updated it to a version recent enough to be supported on the Play Store.

      • Sean

Interesting. Thank you. I’ll look at that further when I get home.

Swiss I’m so sorry for your father. I hope for the best for him and your whole family.

    Tehran on the Lake now.

I think South Dearborn is easier to say.

There are most certainly times when even though I shouldn’t, I think of Islam being a fusion of religion and civil structure and really wonder where all these “moderates” (some of whom I know and who are great people) are going to be if they hit majority. The historical precedents aren’t good.

I suppose we’ll see with the UK before we get to that point (unless PPP really accelerates the inflow). I’d like to think we can assimilate them to at least an acceptance of their fellow countrymen… but again, the history is not good.

    • Suthenboy

In spite of all of the mealy-mouthed rationalizations and wormtounge bullshit just take a step back, take a deep breath and be honest with yourself.
Allowing a huge influx of people whose cultural values contrast markedly with the native culture is stupidity to the point of lunacy.

Dont try to play on my empathy by going on about all of the sad, doe-eyed children. Fuck them.

    • Spudalicious

Sharia Law is based on the combination of the Quran and the Hadith. You can loosely look at the Quran as strategy, and the Hadith as tactics. It is absolutely a civic structure, but adherence is all over the map.

There are places in this country where Sharia courts have been put in place in Muslim communities, and that’s where disputes are handled, not through the US court system.

Bear…. BEAR! Why are you eating my cruiser, bear? That’s not even food! Please don’t eat my cruiser, bear…. oh bear….

Goddamn that is funny. Poor lady.

  6. Common Tater

I think that’s what people like Dave Smith might be missing. I’ve never heard of a (((group))) chanting “Death to Islam”.

      • kinnath

Time to start running over protesters.

      • Suthenboy

The most telling thing about those protesters is captured in the interviews where they are asked basic questions about recent events and they all seem to be clueless about what they are protesting.

Leftist astroturf. Just like the organized caravans of invaders no one seems to be interested in discovering and outing the nameless, faceless organizers.

      • Fourscore

Someone once said that a revolution in America would bring out F35s or some other number. I was told there would be no math.

While it may not be the revolution we want we can see what a couple 100 people can do. Hit and run tactics without weapons can make for a lot of changes.

Going back to this morning’s question, when did nine-round revolvers enter the market? The reason I am asking is that According E. Jean Carrol she had one.

“Carroll told the Guardian in 2019 that she had always had a gun but had not kept it loaded until after she accused the former US president of raping her in the 1990s and entered civil litigation with Trump, which prompted her to load the revolver and put it next to her while she slept, out of security fears.”

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/apr/13/e-jean-carroll-surrenders-gun-police

“The chief of police in Warwick, New York, visited Carroll at her home on Feb. 15 “to discuss some open issues,” the report states, including Carroll’s disclosure of the handgun while she was on the witness stand Jan. 17.

During the second day of the civil trial, Carroll had told the federal court in lower Manhattan that she kept a “high standard revolver, nine chambers” at home with ammunition. “By my bed,” she said.

“I still do not have a license,” Carroll added….

It was unclear why police waited almost a month to inquire in person about the unregistered gun Carroll said she had at her house or whether police are still in possession of it.”

    https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/e-jean-carrolls-gun-was-taken-police-trump-trial-testimony-rcna147673

I’m not familiar with NY gun laws. If she bought it after a license was required to buy it, then she also bought it illegally.

    • Drake

But she didn’t use it defend herself against her fantasized rape? Good thing for imaginary Trump.

    • Bobarian LMD

There is probably some restrictions on clearly crazy people delusional lunatics owning firearms in NYC as well.

    • kinnath

Why was she not led away in handcuffs?

      • Ted S.

        Because fuck you, that’s why.

    • Fatty Bolger

Looks like they were around long before that:

High Standard revolvers were manufactured in a variety of models in .22 Short, .22 Long Rifle and .22 Magnum chambering from 1955 until the mid-1980s.[3]

In 1957 High Standard introduced new models and finishes: a two-inch snubnosed with round butt, a Western model and the successful “Sentinel”, one feature that boosted sales was its 9-shot capacity, all models had 9-shot cylinders.[3]

      • Common Tater

Huh, I never heard of that brand.

      • Not Adahn

It’s not really that high of a standard.

      • Fourscore

I have a Hi-Standard semi auto, bought it about ’51-52. They were $44, as I remember, unless the kid at the gas station had some in stock. They were the equivalent of a Colt Woodsman. Several different models, barrel lengths. Heavy, well made, interchangeable barrels .

If you show up for HH you could probably have the opportunity to shoot one. 22LR.

      • Common Tater

Thanks, for the invite. Unfortunately, I have too many prior obligations.

      • ron73440

        I inherited a 9 round .22lr from my Grandad.

It has a really long barrel and looks like this.

I had to get it worked on, but now it is fun to shoot.

      • R.J.

Man, make a stock for it and you can reproduce the pistol Colonel Mortimer used in The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.

    • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

She might not have bought it in NYC, but, rather, moved there with it.

And High Standard has made break action 9 shot .22’s since at least the 20s.

    • Suthenboy

Hi Standard has made them forever but Ruger, S&W, and Colt make them now since the early 2010’s?
I never wanted one. They take some getting used to much like the short throw lever on Browning BL-22’s.

As for Carroll anything that comes out of her mouth is likely a whopper. I doubt she even has such a gun.
Where do the D’s find these women? More importantly how is it any sane person gives anything they say any credence? The more absurd the lie the louder they scream it. Hitler would be proud. The D’s have taken The Big Lie to new soaring heights.
Really, who would look at Mien Kampf, Animal farm, 1984, Brave New World, Atlas shrugged, Utopia and all of the other cautionary tales and decide they are instruction manuals? The Iranian attacks on Israel: They claim to have warned the U.S. and specifically targeted bases used to attack their consulate earlier this month. So some restraint – by the Iranians? Some of the missiles definitely got through but no casualties (at least no civilian) so far.

Maybe Israel will be satisfied with their tit-for-tat and not escalate?

    • bacon-magic

Eh…they fired directly at Israel. I highly doubt they’re gonna let that slide.

      • bacon-magic

        “Hebrew lasers” – MTG

    • Semi-Spartan Dad

300 drones and missiles aimed at random targets across Israel is tit-for-tat? For their single coordinated strike?

If a killer draws their gun, shoots at your family, and the bullets land on armor… you don’t put your own gun down to de-escalate. You put the wannabe killer down like the rabid animal they are. The Israeli military owes to it their citizens to put Iran down now.

      • The Other Kevin

Unfortunately this is the state of “modern” warfare. The “civilized word” expects a measured response, which prolongs any fighting and coincidentally makes some people a lot of money selling weapons.

      • Zwak says the real is not governable, but self-governing.

Someone actually made a comment like that over at Taibbi’s ‘Stack. They were suggesting a 10-to-1 retaliation ratio, something like that.

I replied that in war, you hurt them until they unilaterally stop wanting to hurt you. And to see this at it’s intended resolution, look at Japan and Germany today. Two generations post WWII, and they are both pretty uninterested in stepping up their military actions, even with Russia and China on the rise. IE, we used the exact force on those two countries to end the war.

      • Suthenboy

        “…measured response…” = “….fake war…”
“….makes some people a lot of money…” = money laundering

This tactic will not end until the grifters pulling this scam get smacked down HARD.
In my fantasy world the citizens of the respective warring states would drag their own leaders out into the street and string them up.

      • Drake

Sounds like the Iranians didn’t actually kill anyone – unlike the Israeli strike. Once the real killing starts it might not stop for a long time.

      • Fatty Bolger

I kind of feel like shrugging off their ineffective attack is the power move here. Stay focused on the shooting war you’ve already got going on next door.

    • grrizzly

Why did Israel attack the Iranian consulate? That’s practically never done by normal countries. Israel knew that Iran would have to retaliate.

      Also

David Cameron: Iran attacking Israel was reckless.

Journalist: What would Britain do if our consulate was flattened?

David Cameron: We would take very strong action!

      Western hypocrisy on full display.

      • EvilSheldon

I’m guessing that Israel attacked the Iranian consulate because there were a bunch of high-value military targets sheltering there.

      • grrizzly

There’s some value in respecting long-lasting traditions.

The principle of diplomatic immunity is one
of the oldest elements of foreign relations.
        Ancient Greek and Roman governments,
for example, accorded special status to
envoys, and the basic concept has evolved
and endured until the present. As a matter of
        international law, diplomatic immunity was
primarily based on custom and international
practice until quite recently. In the period
since World War II, a number of international
        conventions (most noteworthy, the Vienna
Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the
        Vienna Convention on Consular Relations)
have been concluded. These conventions have
formalized the customary rules and made
        their application more uniform.

      • EvilSheldon

There’s also some value in ignoring them.

      • Drake

We’ve been in more than our share of proxy wars. Never said “hey a Russian guy we really hate is in their Mexican Consulate, let’s blow it up with an airstrike!”

Because, that would be a violation of all kinds or international law, probably the UN Charter, and an act of war against both Russia and Mexico. It would be crazy.

It would also wreck all the Cold War spy novels – where they have to poison or stab the guy at the local whorehouse instead.

I find it fascinating that you think everyone else has a hard-on for Israel, while you, who were raised by the people who literally invented the word progrom, is totally neutral.

Especially when my comment was about Iran.

But you let your freak-flag fly.

      • grrizzly

I cannot understand why you and many right-wing Americans are so fanatical in their attachment to and identification with Israel. Say anything negative about America and it’s fine but criticize Israel and it’s as if somebody called your mother a whore. At the very least it’s creepy. I don’t think you are even Jewish. (Sorry, if I’m wrong about it). Israel is another deeply flawed country, like all of them. Also, not my country, not my people. I don’t feel this level of identification neither with America nor with Russia. I have as much guilt for what people in the country that I left almost a quarter century ago did more than a century ago as I have white liberal guilt. Precisely zero.

      • Common Tater

        All countries are assholes.

The history didn’t start on October 7. Israel has been engaged in ethnic cleansing of Palestinians since 1948.

      • Gustave Lytton

Sure taking a long time to do it.

      • kinnath

History didn’t start in 1948 either.

      • Spudalicious

Anyone who thinks this started in 1948 is straight up ignorant.

      • Spudalicious

Why didn’t they start with the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians that live in Israel? Assad killed about 200,000 Palestinians when he drove them out of Syria. I would say that exceeds Israels body count, yet the world yawned.

      • Suthenboy

I am very reluctant to engage in much debate on this subject because as you pointed out it is difficult for people to remain civil.
I am aware of the history and admit Israel is, like all human institutions, flawed.
My position is no matter what comes out of debate the proxies, and thus their masters in Iran, cannot be dealt with as if they are reasonable. They have stepped too far over the line this time.
It is time to squash the cockroach, bleach the kitchen and get on with cooking.

But, for the dudes who aren’t attracted to women, it is also the one place in the whole section of the world were dudes who like to look at other dudes aren’t thrown off of rooftops.

“A major Chinese pharma firm is stealing Americans’ genetic information to build a massive worldwide database, lawmakers say.

WuXi AppTec, which has bases in Massachusetts, Delaware, and California devises molecules and tests them in the lab and in animals that US pharmaceutical companies base their medications on, some of which help treat cancer and cystic fibrosis among other serious health issues.

But the company, which has close ties with the Chinese Communist Party, has been found to have gleaned a mountain of Americans’ genetic information via hacks and corporate mergers.

Last month, a congressional committee passed a bill to pressure health firms to decouple themselves from the company.

Ongoing investigations have shown that private genetic sequences via blood samples, DNA data, and individuals’ medical histories have landed in Chinese companies’ hands due to hacks and corporate mergers.

Sensitive data is believed to be gathered in China to develop medicines for its military, posing what lawmakers have called a major national security risk funded by US taxpayers.”

Didn’t Tex Watson of Manson family fame also have a Buntline Special?

  16. Suthenboy

I am very sorry about your father Swiss. I hope he recovers well.

  17. The Late P Brooks

    Today, in ass backward economics-

I can’t find it again, but the google nooz puked up a Canadian editorial about gig workers and productivity. Did you know that many uber drivers and food delivery people wait around doing nothing, and not getting paid to do it? His solution was to make them all full time employees, and pay them handsomely for sitting around doing nothing, because that will increase productivity.

Apparently, uber and doordash drivers can magically manufacture customers for their services, just like workers in a steel mill can crank out rolls of thin gauge sheet metal.

  18. The Late P Brooks

    Found it

But the wages are low and unpredictable — and for much of their day, platform workers literally get paid nothing. Because the platforms treat workers as so-called ‘contractors’, not waged employees, they evade normal responsibilities: like minimum wage, workers’ compensation, EI, and CPP.

Workers are directed and paid by the platforms. They do not control prices. They don’t know in advance what they will be paid. They cover their own costs (including car, gas, data, and insurance). Most relevant for Canada’s productivity, they aren’t paid while waiting for their next job, or travelling to pick up a meal or a passenger.

    ——-

Since waiting is seemingly ‘free’, the platforms have no incentive to reduce it. In fact, they prefer an excess of available workers, since it speeds response times for customers. And their algorithmic pricing strategies push down pay even further if drivers are desperate enough to work for less.

Apart from being unfair, this creates a horrible disincentive for productivity growth. These workers literally do nothing for half their time. If the almost one million platform workers in Canada actually worked all their days, rather than just half of them, national productivity would improve noticeably.

And if pigs had wings, they’d be eagles.

    • creech

Used to be known as sweatshops.

    • The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

‘These workers literally do nothing for half their time.’

How is that any different from any other workers?

  19. The Late P Brooks

A powerful way to promote productivity, therefore, is to raise the price of labour — starting by paying platform workers at least minimum wage for the time they sit idly waiting for another order. Their employers will quickly find more efficient ways to match labour with customer demand. That will free hundreds of thousands of people to do something more productive.

As we all know, the surest way to increase sales is to raise prices.

As for those hundreds of thousands of people freed from the drudgery of waiting around for a call which might not even come, they can go to work in a hat factory.

  20. The Late P Brooks

Third party liability is a growth industry.

“Professional athletes should be able to compete without dedicating brain space to constant pube vigilance or the mental gymnastics of having every vulnerable piece of your body on display,” former US track and field athlete Lauren Fleshman wrote in an Instagram post.

“Women’s kits should be in service to performance, mentally and physically. If this outfit was truly beneficial to physical performance, men would wear it.

“This is not an elite athletic kit for track and field. This is a costume born of patriarchal forces that are no longer welcome or needed to get eyes on women’s sports.”

    ——-

“Working directly with athletes throughout every stage of the design process, Nike designed garments to ensure fit across a range of body types and style preferences, and infused real-time feedback throughout the entire product development cycle,” John Hoke, Nike Chief Innovation Officer, said in the release.

Nike must think tiktok bimbos are athletes.

    *I thought Olympians were amateurs

I don’t know how the women can be expected to tuck their nuts in those things.

Jeebus these people never shut the fuck up, do they?
Camel toe is the only reason I watch the olympics. My God, have you looked at the female pole vaulters lately?

      • Pope Jimbo

Too bad all the “female” Olympians will have dicks.

I don’t understand why these women think their opinions matter. They won’t be on the team

Not that I’ve been posting or commenting as much lately, but last week was especially bad since we had to go out of town. To make it worse, this is what we had to look at every morning:

That would keep me from posting too. Very distracting.

    Controversial

The court’s three liberal justices dissented from the high court’s ruling, while all the court’s conservatives except Chief Justice John Roberts wrote or joined opinions explaining their views.

The law, which Republican Gov. Brad Little signed in April 2023, sought to ban medical professionals from providing gender affirming care, including transition surgeries, puberty blockers or hormone therapy for those under 18. Doctors could face up to 10 years in prison for providing such services under the law. The high court’s ruling, while not a final one on the legality of bans on gender-affirming treatment, could reverberate among the legal challenges in other states that have passed similar bans.

Do no harm? That’s crazy talk.

    • Compelled Speechless

Explain to me how mutilating a teenager’s genitals because they’re a little sexually confused while going through puberty is harm.

      • rhywun

And the evidence against all of this is rapidly accumulating, to the point where even European countries are reacting to it.

Meanwhile the Dems won’t listen to any of that because their purpose, other than “smash the system”, is contrarianism.

Judging by today’s protests the DNC convention is gonna be lit.

“How were we to know that a DNC convention in Chicago would have problems?”

Round 10 of Candidates is done for the day. Tomorrow is an off day.
The last 3 rounds since my last update has been crazy, Nakamura went win/loss/win, for example.

    Standings:

    Nepomniachtchi and Gukesh 6 pts
Caruana, Nakamura, and Praggnanandhaa 5.5 pts
    Vidit 5 pts
    Firouzja 3.5 pts
    Abasov 3 pts

4 rounds to go and still 6 in it.

Nepo is now at 38 consecutive rounds leading the candidates.
