Monday Afternoon Meh Links

Today’s theme.

Little sleep, worried about my Dad, work consisting of several 2-hour Teams calls with large amounts of IT people from Canada and India… I can only muster up a “meh” for today’s links.

  • Campus Management.
  • Hmmm. Let us see what really happens.
  • I am starting to suspect that the Ivy League has a Jew-hatred problem.
  • Yeah, he kinda needed to do this.

Music (OK, its not really this bad)

Comment section is open and all yours.

P.S. Thanks to everyone who sent in articles/posts. I am working on scheduling them all.

I planted a couple maple trees on Saturday.
Just trying to do my part.

      • SDF-7

I thought about planting some maples — but then thought it would just make me a sap.

      • The Gunslinger

I’ma just leaf that one alone.

Damn commie tree – starts out green and then turns red.

In my area they plant themself so I had to go out and cut some down.

      • The Gunslinger

Plenty of trees around me too. Most of the mature trees in my yard are probably older than me (53) so I wanted to have some younger trees growing.

The two trees I planted are 5-6 foot tall and were only $20 a piece. I’ve been waging war against buckthorn this spring to help the nicer trees have a chance.

Shouldn’t the H be capitalized in that new holiday?

Same shit going on at Yale. As time goes on they seem less and less impressive.

    • The Other Kevin

The left really does have a problem here. Their foot soldiers are getting out of control. It’s interesting.

      • Drake

Getting to the end-point of the diversity-is-our-strength nonsense.

My Dad along with a class-full of WASP men started at Yale in 1958. They weren’t particularly anti-semitic. Might not have invited Jews to the country club out of snobbiness, but not hatred.

Now we’ve imported the third world and act shocked that they brought their third world sensibilities and biases came with them. How many Palestinians ‘refugees’ will be coming our way when this ends? Any chance they may be a tad bit anti-semitic?

      • SDF-7

From a pure troll perspective, I’d love to see Doocey bring this up with KJP. These are the same voters he’s pandering to elsewhere, after all.

I’d be expelling the lot of the little whiny brats who either directly threatened other students/faculty or “took over” / obstructed / “de-colonized” public university spaces. And if they came back I’d arrest them for trespass. But I’m admittedly a cranky get-off-my-line relative hard liner.

It is almost like over 4 years and counting now of letting “protestors” run roughshod over everyone results in temper tantrum babies thinking they can do whatever they want wherever they want — or as you said “getting out of control”. I’m sure we’ll have a fun mostly peaceful Summer of Love again at this point, and January will be nuts on the off chance they don’t fortify enough.

Wouldn’t mind giving them the opportunity to fight for Palestine or Ukraine either — but doubt Israel would care for it. Can’t be shipping our toxic waste around the world, after all.

    • juris imprudent

What would we do without The Bee?

“We will not tolerate the existence of Jewish people on campus,” said Darren Polk on behalf of the protesting students inside the encampment. “People keep trying to come up with ‘peaceful ways’ to end this conflict, but there’s only one way we envision this coming to a conclusion, which is all the Jews being dead.”

“Also, America. America should be dead too.”

      • Sensei

        On point.

“April 22 (UPI) — Israel’s military intelligence chief resigned Monday over failures in the run up to the Oct. 7 attacks on the country by Hamas and other Palestinian groups in which 1,200 people were massacred.”

Netenyahu is probably going to go after this is “over”, as it happened on his watch.

I can’t say I’ve heard of anything/anyone in British politics that makes me think they can vote their way out of it. It is just shit sandwich vs. mega-shit sandwich all over.

      • ZWAK will kindle all of the dreams it took a lifetime to destroy

Liz Truss. She has zero personality, and seems autistic as all get out, but that is what they need – someone who sees the problem and doesn’t really care about the personal end of it.

Don’t know if she would have been any good, but her ouster was led by petty politics, just the shit that has put them were they are.

    • rhywun

Losing to f’g Labour?! Ugh sorry Britlanders.

    • Evan from Evansville

The whole Oct 7+Followup Shebang strikes me now as ‘The government(s) will secret EVERYTHING so no one can know how ignorant, inept and incompetent they really are.’

I say this as someone with ZERO military experience nor inner knowledge. ‘He doesn’t really notice if you RETURN your older bro’s porn stash…doesn’t matter if it isn’t EXACTLY in its right spot…No one will notice…Right?’ <– That was me. • SDF-7

At least you’d get to find out if she has any colonic polyps. Possibly all the way up the small intestine, even.

Relevant? What’s that got to do with anything?

Merchan ruled that prosecutors are permitted to question Trump about two rulings — one by a judge, the other by a jury — finding that Trump defamed advice columnist E. Jean Carroll by denying her claims of sexual assault.

The judge said prosecutors can also raise the decision in Trump’s civil fraud trial finding that he fraudulently manipulated property values as well as rulings finding that Trump violated the gag order in that case. Trump can also face questioning about a 2018 ruling in a lawsuit against his foundation.

But Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) cannot bring up sanctions imposed against Trump in a lawsuit he filed against Hillary Clinton in Florida, the judge ruled, as well as several other “bad acts” prosecutors desired to cross-examine Trump about.

Merchan’s ruling is designed to give Trump’s legal team an informed view as it mulls whether the former president should take the stand in his defense.

I thought allegations not directly related to the charges at hand were off limits. But I guess they need to fling all the shit they possibly can at him.

If they can keep him off the stand, they can use that as proof he’s guilty.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

“Hey look, this fucking guy’s guilty of something.”

I don’t know what New York law is, but in Indiana Mrs. TOK was on jury duty for a rape trial, and it accidentally came out in testimony that the police had been to the victim’s house several times before. That was enough for a mistrial. So either NY is different or that judge just DNGAF.

      • SDF-7

Given the special casing / one-time-pass legislation and the judges they’ve trotted out — I’d go more with the latter in practice.

Wealth destruction, in general. People have to be seriously reconsidering the value of “elite” schools.

  8. The Other Kevin

I will second your “meh” concerning the weekend’s hockey tournament. Not the best and kind of a waste of money. They didn’t put my team in the tier we requested, and as a result we were put into a group with two teams that just smoked everybody else. There was no semifinal, just a final, so unless your team was perfect your weekend ended early. The building wasn’t very accessible, and every game we had to schlep our hockey gear across a large building with 4 rinks and very narrow hallways.

Now that I’m done complaining, they announced the two big tournaments next year will be in Dallas and Florida. We were thinking of skipping those two, but of course they pick two of the best locations.

    • SDF-7

Oh if we’re going to “Meh” at sports, I raise you the F1 Chinese Grand Prix… aka the “Watch Verstappen lap almost a second faster than anyone else and the commentators try to make a battle for 9th place exciting!”

      Yawn.

  9. The Late P Brooks

I read an interesting article somewhere (sorry, no link) which basically said the Israelis had become complacent and overly reliant on technology for monitoring the border, which was a major factor in getting caught napping Oct 7.

    • SDF-7

Yeah — that’s what I remember being said shortly after it happened. They were (are?) using some sort of “smart fence” surveillance to keep manpower lower and Hamas basically overwhelmed it and surged the fence or somesuch.

      • ZWAK will kindle all of the dreams it took a lifetime to destroy

It is the folly of mankind everywhere, and for all of time. Hell the first amendment covers it: Thou shall not worship false gods, or somesuch.

The same thing will happen with AI, people will try to use it in replacement of humans, and it will work just as well.

There is no evidence to support this claim. The building has not changed hands according to any publicly available information. The assertion stems from a single dubious source — a “British” outlet named The London Crier.

The article in question cites a video from a “real estate agent” whose YouTube channel was created just weeks earlier, in February 2024. DNS records reveal that this website was created on March 26, 2024, a week before it went viral with this claim. For several reasons articulated below, the claim is likely an example of Russian propaganda.

      • The Other Kevin

I have a teammate who’s a Never Trumper. I can usually have a decent discussion on most things but I heard him say all that Ukraine aid would be spent here and I noped out.

      • Urthona

He sees eye to eye with Trump on that one, sadly.

How ghoulish is that argument though, even ignoring the nonsense economics of it?

    • Sean

      That’s fucked up.

  13. The Late P Brooks

In mentioning Trump’s civil fraud case — where the judge found he conspired to alter his net worth for tax and insurance benefits — prosecutors similarly say they intend to note that the judge in that case determined Trump “repeatedly and persistently” falsified business records, issued false financial statements and conspired to commit insurance fraud.

Trump faces 34 counts of falsifying business records in his New York criminal case, which revolves around a hush money deal made with an adult film actress ahead of the 2016 election. He has pleaded not guilty.

If they have the evidence to prove the charges in this case, why do they feel the need to drag an unrelated case into it? Sounds like they’re afraid they don’t have a solid case.

  14. Shpip

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak pledged on Monday to start sending asylum seekers to Rwanda within 10 to 12 weeks, telling the upper house of parliament he will force the new legislation through despite its opposition.

I wonder if Trump could try this tactic. There’s no shortage of third world shitholes to send our invader hordes back to. In fact, for a fraction of the price of “aid” to our Ukranian allies, I bet President Dudebro could be convinced to take our problems off our hands (whether by building another superprison like he did for los gangbangers or via training flights for his rotary-wing aircrew is a dilemma I’ll leave to the reader).

I REALLY don’t “get” the pro-‘Palestine’/anti-Israel sweep over Team Blue. Historically, American Jews have been quite well-off and, at least socially, quite Team Blue. Hollywood alone. The ‘anti-oppressor’ meme overflowed the Useful Idiots’ cup. We’ve all said it here: Go back far enough, and EVERYONE has been a ‘slaver’ AND ‘enslaved’ by others. I’d like to imagine said buzzword-shit has sloshed the fan and the whirring will (at least) slow. Because humans are predictable, I don’t foresee it ending well. Because humans are predictable, I expect no one to recognize the gears slurping soft at the constant slop. (Mmm…need more arousing euphemisms…)

Nothing profound will happen. Just more ‘Aww, SHUCKS!’-ing. Life will go on. Most won’t notice the shit til it passes them. I’m awaiting my generation’s hopeful slip into sanity. (Predictably, I proceed with caution.)

They’ll get it right, this time

Construction began today on the first true high-speed rail line in the US, which will connect Los Angeles suburbanites to the bright lights of Las Vegas, Nevada. Not only should the project enable people in the US to finally experience European and Asian standards of speedy passenger trains, it could also offer a commercial model for building high-speed rail lines elsewhere in the US.

A groundbreaking ceremony today in Las Vegas, attended by US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg alongside Nevada and California state officials, marked the official start of construction for the Brightline West project. With a targeted completion in four years – just in time for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles – Brightline West is expected to whisk passengers at speeds of up to 320 kilometres per hour down the median of the Interstate 15 highway, bypassing lines of cars stuck in weekend traffic jams.

The $12 billion project may seem like a bold gamble for Brightline and its owner, Fortress Investment Group, even with a $3 billion federal grant announced by President Joe Biden back in December 2023. But there are several reasons why Brightline West may succeed where other US high-speed rail projects have fallen behind.

One lesson that US state rail authorities could learn from Brightline is to “value the cost of delay and indecision” by avoiding a lengthy planning phase, says Russell Jackson, global transit director at AECOM. And although Brightline’s approach focuses only on the most potentially profitable routes, he suggests that government funding can fill the gap for other cases.

“The public purse can be used for those projects that are still needed to connect city pairs that are a little bit too close together for airline travel and too far apart for cars,” says Jackson.

I’m sure those guys at EarthJustice and thr rest of the ecofascists will gladly forego twenty years of environmental impact lawsuits if Mayor Petey asks them nicely buys them off.

This is one line that might actually work. Lots of empty space so most land will be cheap. Few stops and a destination people want to go to, not like Merced and Bakersfield.

      • Bobarian LMD

On the LA to Vegas drive, the worst traffic is still the first 50-75 miles, which you still have to drive to get to the San Berdoo train station, unless the plan has been modified.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

I’ve been stuck in bad traffic going through El Cajon pass and all the way back to Victorville. For that matter I got stuck in traffic somewhere around the state line because somebody walking on the freeway got hit by a car. Add a bar car on that train so people can start the party early, and I think it can be successful.

      • rhywun

There is a commuter train to SB FWIW. Presumably it will connect to this one.

Construction began today on the first true high-speed rail line in the US,

Florida has one already, built by a private company.

Not high-speed. Real high-speed tops out faster than that one’s 125mph and has certain other defined specs.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FBI%E2%80%93King_suicide_letter

        ***
The FBI–King suicide letter or blackmail package was an anonymous 1964 letter and package by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) meant to blackmail Martin Luther King Jr.[1]

On November 21, 1964, a package that contained the letter and a tape recording allegedly of King’s sexual indiscretions was delivered to King’s address. Although the letter was anonymously written, Martin Luther King Jr. correctly suspected the FBI sent the package.[1][2] King’s wife Coretta Scott said the tapes comprised only “mumbo jumbo”.[3]

During the Church Committee hearings and investigations in 1975, a copy of the “suicide letter” was discovered in the work files of William C. Sullivan, deputy FBI director.[5] He has been suggested as its author.[6][1]

The text of the letter is as follows:

        KING,

In view of your low grade, abnormal personal behavoir [sic] I will not dignify your name with either a Mr. or a Reverend or a Dr. And, your last name calls to mind only the type of King such as King Henry the VIII and his countless acts of adultery and immoral conduct lower than that of a beast.

King, look into your heart. You know you are a complete fraud and a great liability to all of us Negroes. White people in this country have enough frauds of their own but I am sure they don’t have one at this time that is any where near your equal. You are no clergyman and you know it. I repeat you are a colossal fraud and an evil, vicious one at that. You could not believe in God and act as you do. Clearly you don’t believe in any personal moral principles.

It’s nonsense, he was just lying about it the whole time until he had a secure position and the meeting which he conveniently can’t relay the gist of provides good cover. He was probably much more concerned about what he heard in the meetings he had with his big MIC donors.

      • Raven Nation

Alternative take: Johnson really was convinced by whatever the spooks offered. BUT, given the track record of the alphabet agencies over the last, say, 70 years, how about a little bit of doubt over what they say.

I wonder if the meeting consisted of them silently sliding a picture of JFK and RFK across the table and walking out.

    Help Wanted

A huge crowd of faculty members who teach at Columbia University in New York held a mass walk-out on Monday afternoon to protest the institution having called police to arrest students at a pro-Palestinian encampment protest last week.

Hundreds of members of the teaching cohort at Columbia walked out in solidarity with the students who were arrested by the New York police department last week and also suspended by the university.

The solidarity protest came as students put protest tents back up in the middle of campus on Monday after they were torn down last week when more than 100 arrests were made.

    ——-

The Columbia and Barnard chapters of the American Association of University Professors decried Shafik’s crackdowns on protests in a joint statement released on Friday.

“We are shocked at her failure to mount any defense of the free inquiry central to the educational mission of a university in a democratic society and at her willingness to appease legislators seeking to interfere in university affairs,” the chapters said, adding that Shafik invoked a “unilateral and wildly disproportionate punishment [for] peacefully protesting students”.

Hire permanent replacements and tell the children to show up to class or deliver their withdrawal notices to the dean’s office.

    • Urthona

Let’s be honest here. Columbia has a mid tier Ivy League antisemitic protest program at best.

News now reporting that the North Penn school authorities had ample notice that the trans kid, with a long juvie record, was going to beat up the victim in the cafeteria and did nothing to prevent or stop the attack. The authorities apparently got a real earful from parents at a meeting, but one dad was shouted down by a few audience members for being “transphobic.” He refused to apologize and said the issue wasn’t a boy beating up a girl but school authorities refusing to intervene.

  26. Pope Jimbo

Uffda. I am awaiting the other shoe to drop. Sorry, but after reading this story, I know something bad will come out soon in regards to Our Historic First Black Female Fire Captain who was selected by Our Historic All Female City Council. Why? Because I already doubt her veracity:

Baker started her career in the basic life support unit for Regions Emergency Medical Services and in Mercy Hospital’s Emergency Department. She wore many hats, working as an EMT, a certified nursing assistant and a first responder.

There she learned while people claim not to care what the person who takes care of them looks like, that isn’t true for all people.

“Some people do care. And I know because I’ve had patients call me the N word,” she said. “I’ve had patients tell me they didn’t want me touching them, that they would rather put me back in a field than allow me to take care of them. I’ve had people when I was working in the hospital refuse an EKG to be done and we were short beds that night and I was the only tech on.”

The patient waited until a white tech came on hours later, Baker said.

This allegedly happened after 2012 (when she started her career).

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

Sounds like a problem that would sort itself out.

    • Dr. Fronkensteen

Maybe. If I’m being generous. This was in 2012, if you had a patient who was 85 at the time, they would have been born in 1927. And if they have cognitive decline they may have reverted back to their early years when those kinds of beliefs would have been more prevalent.

My internet worked fine today from 8 to 1, then went down for 3 hours. I got frustrated and have now reset my wifi gizmo twice in the span of 15 minutes. It seems to be the only way to restore my internet. I’ve had to reset it hundreds of times in the past year, and I worried about wearing out the on/off button. Oddly, it came back to life on its own when I made a positive comment about mass surveillance around 4 pm eastern.

I figured out NSA was spying on me on March 28th, 2021. I wish they would either give me a job or leave me alone. It appears instead I will be under surveillance indefinitely. I made a meme about it: https://platedlizard.blogspot.com/2024/04/nsa-meme-and-screensaver.html

The average NSA analyst makes $40/hour. Assuming 24/7 coverage, they’ve spent about $1,000/day spying on me. That works out to a grand total of about a million dollars. It’s a very unpleasant situation when you think something weird and illegal is happening, yet also feel pressured not to talk about it because you won’t be believed, or it might harm your reputation.

Those poor protesters were TARGETED for extra-special punishment! So sayeth Isra Hirsi (Ilhan’s kid) She points out that no one has punished the monsters who sprayed them with “chemical weapons”.

I guess the good news is that I can look forward to Isra becoming the new US Rep for that district once Ilhan retires.

And why can’t he explain to us why western democracy is at stake?

I saw a couple of articles about the FISA renewal which hammered on about the desperate importance and necessity of Section 702 without offering the vaguest explanation of its purpose or function. I guess the Important People already know, and that’s all that matters.

Isra sounds like the Arabic word for faster. Makes sense. Akbar is sometimes used as a name, and it means greater or bigger. Ilhan is garbled from al-Khan, meaning the leader/boss. Hirsi means amulet in Arabic.

So many people fail to understand the Russian mentality that has already been demonstrated. They don’t care about casualties, at least not nearly as much as NATO countries. They will march every able-bodied man like a brood of cicadas into Ukrainian defenses if they must. In a war of attrition, the larger side is bound to win. The only question left is how many more people will get killed.

Speaking of cicadas, I recently learned why their life cycle is a prime number of years. By emerging all at once on such a schedule, they overwhelm their predators and keep the life cycles of those predators from synching up with theirs. Math shows up in nature in odd ways.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LqxzeUZqTk

Hard to disagree with that. Ukraine relies on the US and EU for its budget and military, so it’s functionally a protectorate.

If Raytheon et al can benefit from it, there’s very little stopping the US from sticking its dick into every bowl of mashed potatoes around the world.

Cutting military spending would help somewhat, but good luck getting either team to vote for that.
