Teeny tiny poster…

Let the Wrong One In

Another film that is almost new!Β  I am spoiling you folks.Β  This is, as the opening excerpt said, an Irish vampire comedy. The only thing is shares with the Swedish film Let the Right One In is:

  • Vampires

That’s it.Β  This is not a remake of that film, or a direct parody of that film.Β  It is something new. It has been brought to us by Conor McMahon, who has also brought us Stitches and Dead Meat.Β  I enjoy his storytelling and I felt this was the best of his efforts so far.

So if this is not a direct parody of Let the Right One In, what is it? Here are the two plotlines in tonight’s film:

  • A young supermarket worker discovers that his older brother is a vampire and must choose whether to help him or slay him. (Courtesy IMDB)
  • A taxi drivers’ fiancΓ©e is turned into a vampire and starts taking over Dublin. Her taxi-drivin’ husband-to-be tries to stop her.

Everything comes together very well, I would say this is deserving of better than the 5.5/10 it got on IMDB. “It’s hard to find entertaining newer films” as CPRM has told me before. This one should fill the bill.

So watch!Β  Or don’t!Β  Everything is voluntary until your fiancΓ©e turns into a vampire, tries to take over the world and leaves you in the dust! You know, that might have been a sign that the couple should not have gotten engaged in the first place…Β  Anyway, next week we shall watch a classic knockoff of a classic!Β  The Bronx Warriors!

Is it my browser or is that font huge?

      • R.J.

        It’s flipping huge.

      • R.J.

I wrote this one before the site changed over. So this is the last one that will look like the classic style. I’m working on next weeks right now, a few issues, not sure how it’s gonna look.

      • pistoffnick (370HSSV)

I was dreamin’ when I wrote this
Forgive me if it goes astray

  2. Gender Traitor

Just noticed tonight’s a full moon. Got a link to a good werewolf flick?

      • R.J.

Now I would like to say, that tonightβ€˜s film is much better than β€œWerewolf Woman.”

      • CPRM

Full Moon Entertainment, now there is a classic’s factory. And they dabbled in the skin flicks as well, Heroes to a generation they was.

  3. DEG

    It is something new.

    Whoa

    Diving in……

  4. R.J.

Tonight’s secret short film is β€œThe State Home for Manic Pixie Dream Girls.”
Might be one of my favorite short sketches.

    • DEG

      I found it.

    • CPRM

Just rewatched that a few weeks ago, Jarrett.

Messy opening… how long will it take to clean that mess?

      Only the best for Glibs.

Transylvania? Are we finally going to see Pie?

And that is one big dildo.

    • R.J.

“Are we finally going to see Pie?”
      “That is one big dildo.”

Not sure if Pie would be flattered, or irritated.

      • Aloysious

As long as we help him build character.

Even vampires need a hand. Sometimes.

Vampires will blister in the sun so why not?

        Right?!

Our vampire is such a pathetic waste case I can’t help but laugh at him.

    • Aloysious

I deny your reality and insert my own.

      No more reboots.

      • R.J.

Yeah. That was almost a catchphrase here.

      • Tres Cool

The most recent Ghostbusters wasnt horrid. Worth a matinee.
Walk, dont run to see it.

      • R.J.

I did. It’s a one-time view, not a DVD purchase. I agree with that assessment.

    • Suthenboy

I think earlier today or maybe yesterday I described today’s entertainment industry as demoralized. Demoralized people are unable to innovate or have original thought. I see them as cannibalizing the successes of their forerunners with these endless remakes, reruns, sequels, prequels ad infinitum with not an original thought among them.

Also to illustrate this point I have asked how many classic movies did the free west produce during the 20th century…the vast majority of which were from the US, vs how many such movies were produced by the USSR during the same time period.

I really do fear dark times ahead for us.

      • Aloysious

        You make good points.

With regards to Disney, Bob Iger has been quoted, I think I have this right, as “mining” their IP’s. I wonder if that’s an acknowledgement that DEI hiring standards has destroyed the quality of writers Disney employs.

As an example that’s at least in the neighborhood, just look at Zach Snyders two Rebel Moon movies. If you like a good story and/or interesting characters; well, you’re out of luck.

      • Evan from Evansville

I don’t disagree, but such is the natural cycle of humans and tech advances. I think Internet 2.0 (and ongoing expansion) is the same revolution as the printing press 500 years ago. The difference now is really the *acceleration* of change. I was born INTO the nascency of Zuckerverse, started IU in 2005 when Facebook expanded to all universities. I was *there*, man.

I agree humans will have a WWW 3.0. Honestly, I just hope I die before Skynet sparks.

Good news! After every crippling blow Life brings, humanity births again, stronger and better than ever. (Only for it to again repeat. Such is our ‘destiny,’ I fear. I don’t really mind. Species go extinct all the time. We’ll outgrow our resources. Regardless, the eruption will be after I depart. *crosses fingers*

      • Evan from Evansville

“WWW 3.0.” <– Note this, ev. This is a solid turn of phrase. I'm pleased with myself.

      • Evan from Evansville

Did I fuck it up again? I’m awash in joy.

        WW 3.0. (WW3.0 doesn’t look right.)

      • Mojeaux

Demoralized people are unable to innovate or have original thought.

        Color me demoralized.

      • R.J.

“Mining IPs” refers to going back and trying to get more money from an older property, instead of investing in new stories.
Quite honestly it makes me want to see Bob Iger trip and burn alive in a fire. A really slow one that takes a long time to do the job.

      • Brochettaward

Demoralization is as good a reason as any I’ve seen to describe the malaise in the entertainment industry. You have a bunch of rich nepo babies running things with empty suits calling the shots and at least before the last year or so endless money flowing.

You have a bunch of young fucks who were hired to check boxes who have zero life experience beyond school where they were spoonfed victimhood ideology.

  12. DEG

    Vampire bunny.

    Nice touch to the ending.

    • R.J.

I restarted about 40 minutes ago so the wife could watch. I still love it.

  13. Aloysious

    Deco’s head on a bat?

Classic. Bugs Bunny and Witch Hazel. Directed by Chuck Jones, natch.

    • R.J.

There are some great references in this film.

      • Aloysious

        Yep. Good choice, RJ.

      • R.J.

See you next week for some apocalyptic action with The Bronx Warriors!

Speaking of Steve Smith, the real one (I think) showed up in Matt Welch’s Twitter TL today.

      • Gender Traitor

Good morning, U! How are you today?

      • UnCivilServant

I’m in the office. For the past few days I’ve been running on a weird sleep schedule where I’m asleep from 3/4 pm till 10/11 pm and awake until the end of the workday. I need to fix it, and will probably spend my three day weeking doing so.

      • Gender Traitor

Found out the poor mangled magnolia probably needs to be hacked back to the newest limbs that have grown out of its base, and that’s going to cost about a grand. 😒 Guess we’ll get it done and start calling it “Baby Groot.” (And I guess I’ll put off getting a new phone for a while.)

  16. Grosspatzer, Superstar

    Mornin, reprobates!

    Mornin’, UCS!

      Good morning, ‘patzie!

  17. UnCivilServant

So, I went and wasted $50 on Baldur’s Gate 3. I don’t get the praise people are vomitting for it. The gameplay side needs some improvements in the area of finding answers to questions on mechanics – such as how certain abilities work (or don’t) and what impact gear has on them. Plus the characters are insufferable. I want to inflict horrible pain and torment on my so called companions just to shut them up. The only character that sticks around camp who has even mastered basic civility is the Lich. And he doesn’t ever leave camp! I’m tempted to replace the unbearable companions with hirelings because I need the meat shields in combat, but I want the quest XP for the companion sidequests.

    πŸ™

    • UnCivilServant

Oh, and the lack of the obvious dialog response from conversations is another irritant – example, still in Act I, our main quest is to get rid of brain parasites we’ve been infected with. We find another brain parasite on a goblin we just killed. Another party member is annoyed that I don’t immediately snort the thing and asks if he can have it. The only answers provided are “sure, here you go” or “no, it’s mine” when the obvious answer is “we’re trying to get rid of these things, not shove more in our heads!”

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Our society has gotten far stupider since BGII. If you want snappy nonirritating dialogue play that one.

      • UnCivilServant

I tried. I think I was dead by the opening credits.

      • Fourscore

“Our society has gotten far stupider”

Something my parents said when Elvis showed up on the scene but this time it’s real. The school results in decline are a serious symptom.

Good morning! Not another 3 day weekend! Tourist season, more traffic. OTOH the local merchants will be a little happier.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

        “school results in decline”
Effective teaching and learning leads to too many questions being asked. How are they going to herd people with that going on?

    • Grosspatzer, Superstar

I want to inflict horrible pain and torment on my so called companions just to shut them up.

So this game is a real-life sim? Sounds like fun.

      • UnCivilServant

It’s nothing like real life – In game I can present evidence a character is wrong and they actually admit it instead of just handwaving it away and doubling down.

    • Not Adahn

Yup, the companions are terrible, and the devs were all about “good is stupid and boring lol.”

As far as romance options, there are three male “not an outright psychopath” to choose from, but if you are looking for that in a female, well… you get one and she gets all bad endings.

      • EvilSheldon

So less a game, more a simulation of real life?

        *ducks*

    • Not Adahn

The only things I can see driving that level of praise are:

      -Politically aligned reviewers/influencers
-Newbies that have never played this style of game before and appreciate the novelty
-Oldsters who got hopped up on nostalgia

It IS a successor to the IE games in format.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

        How about straight up bribery?

      • Not Adahn

Also possible. A few dozen AI generated yiffing pics would buy any one of them off.

    • Not Adahn

Find a mod that breaks the level caps per act and you don’t need any companion quest XP.

Removing artificially set level caps is not cheating.

    • Not Adahn

In its defense, I do like the overall story arc, able to deliver background and questions without resorting to the “man behind the man” trope.

      • UnCivilServant

Funny, I had the opposite reaction to the ‘mysterious’ guardian character.

(I’m still in Act I, which has been dragging.)

      • Not Adahn

I’m in Act III, I’m guessing almost done. I possibly could have been done if I didn’t want to finish out some storylines.

I will be doing at least a couple different playthroughs because you can’t see all the content (or even all the content I have any interest in) in one. However, I have noticed that once you know what’s out there, the second playthrough goes MUCH faster.

      • UnCivilServant

I’m not convinced I’d have a second playthrough.

      • Not Adahn

Act I was my least favorite.

A huge chunk of act II was specifically written for the Sharran, who I punted out of my party. That section also has the single worst area of the game. If you are designing things specifically to make save scumming annoying, you are designing rong.

      • UnCivilServant

Not sure I can associate that character with one in-game.

      • Not Adahn

The cleric that is invaluable because she mysteriously has the mysterious artifact that keeps you alive? The one that worships one of the most evil gods in the FR pantheon but I’m supposed to believe is really a good person deep down and won’t betray me? And of course is the first one you start with post-tutorial to encourage you to keep her?

      • UnCivilServant

I forget diety names, even for settings where I’d played for years.

I only have my Bard as a backup healer, so I can’t eject the Cleric…

    • Grumbletarian

Yep. Played it for a week or so, and got bored real fast.

  18. ron73440

Sorry folks, no Stoic Friday today, took a 4 day weekend and went to visit my Step-dad, he’s having a hard time by himself.

Totally forgot last night and going to play farmer today.

    Will return next week.

    • UnCivilServant

      I understand.

I suspect the rest of us understand as well.

    • Gender Traitor

That’s OK, Ron. You just concentrate on your visit. Enjoy it – at least as much as you can while playing farmer. πŸ™‚

        Senior moment #2759

Took garbage pail to curb last night. Went to put it away this morning. “Hmm, seems rather heavy.” Opens pail, sees trash inside. Looks down street, sees no other garbage pails. Remembers that pickup is on Thursday morning.

      • Grosspatzer, Superstar

        2760: I see I unintentionally replied to a comment.

    • Grosspatzer, Superstar

Sounds like you have your priorities straight. Good on ya.

    • Fourscore

We’ll be waiting for you when you come back. Family comes first.

    • Not Adahn

      We will endure it stoically.

      • The Hyperbole

I wont. I’m going to cancel my subscription, and write a strongly worded email to the editors.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

NO EMAIL, STEVE SMITH LIKE TO MEET FACE TO FACE TO DISCUSS YOUR ISSUES!

  19. Not Adahn

    For UCS:

KFGC match tomorrow. I hear rumors of PCCs being acceptable, but I’ll ask Mike when I see him (hopefully at setup tonight).

    • EvilSheldon

If you start shooting PCCs, I’m getting you a black armband to wear…

    • Not Adahn

I will not be, but PCCs are important to get people into the game in NY since you can have your handgun permit denied for pretty much literally anything, depending on the judge.

There’s also a stalwart member of the club who is a terrible shooter because of some sort of hand tremors. But when he can shoulder a gun (like at steel) he suddenly becomes quite respectable.
