      I was expecting this.

      • kinnath

I was never really all that into Sabbath

      • rhywun

That’s a weird way to spell this.

      • Aloysious

        Times makingChanges.

    • ZWAK came for the two-fisted tentacle-fighting, stayed for the crushing existential nihilism.

As much as I love Bowie, kill your heroes and Sleep Alone.

    “tainted blood”

Don’t touch me please, I cannot stand the way you tease.

    • bacon-magic

It was 2024 before I found out that was a cover song.

      • slumbrew

It was 2024 before I found out that was a cover song.

That’s OK, it was 2024 before I realized how much Nevermind sounded like this song. To the point that Cobain was reportedly reluctant to release it as a single.

    • slumbrew

That instantly started playing in my head when I read the headline.

  2. SDF-7

I am not handling the change well…REEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    So… you’re falling to peeses?

    • The Other Kevin

That’s why he wrote a puff piece.

      • bacon-magic

        Suck it up butter cup.

      • juris imprudent

I’m squinting here and that still doesn’t look like a character from Fistful of Dollars.

  3. R.J.

It definitely took me a minute.
Swiss, when you hit “publish” on a draft article does it just go to scheduling? That is my one remaining worry.
Other than that i figured out photo sizing and stuff.

    • Tonio

Click on the word “Immediately” to the right of “Publish.” This, counterintuitively, unlocks the scheduling dialogue. There is no Save control, simply close the dialogue by clicking the “X” of closure.

Here is a guide to the newly mandatory Block Editor (we hates it, Precious):
      https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/wordpress-block-editor/

      • R.J.

        Excellent! I will read it.

      • R.J.

OK, I don’t see no word mang.
We will have to have a Zoom learning session.

      • UnCivilServant

I second the Zoom session – I’m having trouble finding basic functions in this editor.

      • DEG

I thought the block editor wasn’t all that bad.

      • UnCivilServant

They moved me cheese, so now I’m lost.

Always happens with UI “Improvements” after developing a workflow.

  4. The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

“Thai Union’s role in the shrimp fiasco, alleging the Thailand-based seafood company — which owns a 49% stake in Red Lobster — “exercised an outsized influence on the [company’s] shrimp purchasing,” according to the filing. ”

    That is pretty fishy.

    • The Other Kevin

      Something stinks alright.

      • bacon-magic

They were hoping people wouldn’t be scampi and tip more.

      • The Other Kevin

But now their business is fried.

      • SDF-7

I’ll just sit back and watch with some popcorn.

      • The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

Were just trawling for a gaze narrower than the gap between Charybdis and Scylla.

Yeah, I can fillet now, Swiss will come in all hot for squints.

Swiss just prawn in game of life

      • Spudalicious

        It’s all a shell game.

      • juris imprudent

That’s not even half the tail.

    • Evan from Evansville

Squint ain’t frightenin’ me. These were glorious and necessary. Otherwise, this place needs its pun-mongers. Sans such salty language, it’d all be for naut.

Gotta go with His Holiness for the meta-pun.

      • Evan from Evansville

Sans edit button, I do no good. The more things change…

  5. Gender Traitor

Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse should totally do an all-you-can-eat steak promotion. They’d make a fortune, and I’d be happy to do my part to make it a smashing success! 😋🥩🥩🥩

    • SDF-7

You know everyone is thinking of this now…. (and that’s how you do it, Red Lobster….)

      • The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

A dollar an ounce? Sign up, forfeit, and share with the whole family. Assuming it’s a good steak.

Surprised to see 11% win their challenge.

  6. The Late P Brooks

    That word…

The Biden administration fixes to the country’s $1.6 trillion student loan system have resulted in regular announcements to forgive large shares of that debt.

In total, the U.S. Department of Education has canceled almost $160 billion in federal student loan debt for nearly 4.6 million borrowers while President Joe Biden has been in office.

Here what to know about the aid programs that have led to that relief.

    They done fixed it good.

    • The Other Kevin

Well, there was all that debate in congress, they let the public voice their concerns, and it was passed with support from both parties, so. Oh wait…

    • Ted S.

I hate the “what to know” format about latter-day “journalism”.

    • Beau Knott

      In the veterinary sense, perhaps

  7. SDF-7

It was the shrimp that done it!

Yeah… talk about an ill-thought-out promotion. Small yet potentially pricey non-filling item… banking that people will drink (they won’t) or order other things (they won’t).

One could argue the market is self-correcting stupid business practices… but as someone who likes the chain, have to say I think it is a shame. Maybe someone will buy the equipment and locations at fire sale rates and we’ll get some nice regional chains to compete.

    • bacon-magic

The problem with that is while I like local businesses they won’t be able to compete with the Red Lobster mid grade restaurant model because they don’t have the buying power.

    • The Other Kevin

This is 2024, and we have a major obesity problem in the US.

      • juris imprudent

That’s not because of the shrimp. It’s the biscuits.

  8. The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

“In several cases, health officials lied about the risks to patients. In others, patients were infected during research without their knowledge or consent, including children whose parents’ consent was not sought.”

    This is really sick.

    • juris imprudent

I have an idea to cure that behavior.

  9. SDF-7

If Catalonia won’t be my rebellion story anymore, I guess I have to go to the South Pacific for one.

Some enchanted evening – you may meet a revolutionary and wash the French right out of your hair?

    • SDF-7

I could see about 34% or so of America being worn out from REEEE-ing and scared of OMB’s return, yeah.

A larger percentage tired of the deranged Junior High level of “statesmanship” and “journalism” — but I think (and I suspect most think) that Trump was a harbinger, not the cause there and it isn’t going away.

    • rhywun

The lack of self-awareness is breathtaking.

  10. pistoffnick (370HSSV)

    Ah laike shrimp.

“Anyway, like I was sayin’, shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. There’s uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that’s about it.”

  11. The Late P Brooks

You may be eligible for a full discharge of your Direct Loans, Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program Loans or Federal Perkins Loans if your school closed while you were enrolled, if you were misled by your school or didn’t receive a quality education.

That covers a lot of ground.

Every _____ Studies undergrad and graduate program.

    • Nephilium

Wasn’t that similar to what Sears did?

      • Mojeaux

Not sure. Craftsman kept them alive a lot longer than they should have been. Now Lowe’s has it and it’s a shell of its former brand.

    • Unreconstructed

One extra detail I saw on that was that the land sale was done to finance the purchase by the hedge fund. So they didn’t have the cash to make the deal work without crippling the company, apparently. I’m not one to subscribe to the “corporate raiders are evil” newsletter, but it sure sounds like this was an ethically questionable process.

      • The Last American Hero

How did they buy it without cash?

Borrowed money? With what collateral? The company they didn’t own?

      • SDF-7

And you thought zero down home mortgages were bad before 2008….

      • Cunctator

—“How did they buy it without cash?’—

I remember in the 90’s and the aughts, there were several takeovers of companies that had massively overfunded pension programs or large real estate holdings. The buyer negotiated the purchase by pledging to tap the pension fund or liquidate the real estate to finance the purchase. They even made a movie about it. “Other People’s Money”

      • slumbrew

Larry The Liquidator was the hero of that movie.

      • Gender Traitor

Thanks! I thought it was a Charlie but couldn’t remember the last name. (Knew it was NOT Hebdo!)

      • Mojeaux

I googled “Britain sick kid Charlie” because my googlefu is not mad.

      • The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

Yup. The Gard case redpilled me on government healthcare. Not that I looked it before, but I assumed it could be run in a civilized way in a civilized country.

    • Gender Traitor

Dammit, I was sure I was replying to TAFKAL! I AM NOT BROOKS!

      • juris imprudent

Just think, Brooks has been preparing us all this time.

      • Gender Traitor

I hope he is remembered. 😞

      • Ted S.

I assume he would be in his native Australia, but all the papers there are paywalled.

    We are all Brooks now.

The British government on Monday began operating a support phone line for people and their families affected by the tainted blood scandal.

“Hello, tainted blood victim support line … yes, your son has contracted HIV? Hm, that’s a shame… there, there. Have you tried a nice cuppa?”

Notice no mention of any consequences for responsible individuals.

    In a just world:

“Do you know which facility administered the tainted blood? And when? One moment… ah, unfortunately ,the responsible administrator has already been hung, and we’ve had to cut the body down, so you’re too late to spit on it… yes, it was drawing vermin… however, we have erected a tent over his grave, so you can have some privacy if you wish to urinate on it.”

    • The Last American Hero

The important thing is that it wasn’t done by the greedy corporate sector but by government employees with the best intentions.

      • The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

Or just a result of lazy ass covering… But maybe that is the best intention to some.

    • Pope Jimbo

      Stay Calm and NHS On?

  15. Derpetologist

Talked with the prosecutor today about my case. We agreed that my assailant should go into a diversion program, which means community service and anger management classes for him. If he refuses that, the case will go to trial where he is very unlikely to win. I also requested $2500 compensation in lost wages, but I flexible on that one.

A charter school wants to hire me for next year. It’s a bit of a drive, but I’ll take it. I had an interview at another charter school on Friday. The interviewer was impressed that I got into UCLA. I’d prefer that job since it’s a shorter commute. Still haven’t been rejected from the high school a mile from mile apartment. What a joy it would be to have that job.

I’ve been following the Sinclair Method with success. No more binge drinking for me.

    ***
The Sinclair Method (TSM) is a medication-based approach to alcohol addiction treatment. It uses targeted doses of the drug naltrexone to help people reset their drinking habits, instead of requiring them to quit drinking immediately. The technique used is called pharmacological extinction, which turns habit-forming behaviors into habit-erasing behaviors. The effect returns a person’s craving for alcohol to its pre-addiction state.
    ***

On an unrelated note, I was wondering if an AI could tell the difference between large prime and composite numbers written in binary, kind of like what is shown in this video:

    https://youtu.be/z-EtmaFJieY?si=wDw1iW6iBMJeM0LN&t=104

One axis would be the number of 1s and the other would be the number of 0s. Or the longest streak of 1s and the longest streak of 0s. Something like that.

    • R.J.

This is all good news. I wish you continued success with your drinking abatement and your legal case.

    • The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

Sounds like you’re doing well, keep it up and try not to get punched out there.

    • Pope Jimbo

No more binge drinking for me.

Does that mean, you never stop drinking? Technically, you wouldn’t be binging then. Just carrying on as normal.

Seriously, best of luck in getting that job. Even if you are a quitter.

  16. Suthenboy

And what will the envy of the world do to set this right?
I recall a few years ago some state run orphanage that was functionally just a pedo hotbed. I dont recall anything happening to them.
People will scream scandal! for a few weeks tops and then business as usual.

Won’t Hell freeze over before Trump even comes close to winning California?

      • Shpip

Yes, but because of knock-off effects, California taxes and regulations add to the price at the pump in Arizona and Nevada, thus hurting Biden’s chances (at least until Las Vegas and Phoenix get their ballot-printing machines spun up).

Fucking Teams. Nags if you don’t use the new Teams. Nags if you do. Fuck you MS.

  18. The Late P Brooks

    We are all Brooks now.

    I am legion.

  19. The Late P Brooks

I took a quick look, but I couldn’t find the CNN(?) article I read yesterday about how Red Lobster is a part of black culture and black people will suffer disproportionately from restaurant closures.

Said something about company policy being explicitly nondiscriminatory in the early days. If so, good for them.

    • Urthona

      The suffering will be insane.

    • Nephilium

That appears to be regional. Locally, I’ve heard that it’s a standard and nearly expected thing to take mom to Red Lobster for Mother’s Day in the black community (by people both excited to be going to Red Lobster, and those who hate it).

      • UnCivilServant

I have never actually seen anyone who wasn’t white at a Red Lobster, so I don’t know.

      • rhywun

I’ve never been to a Red Lobster at all – the food in question being disgusting and all.

      • DEG

I have never actually seen anyone who wasn’t white at a Red Lobster, so I don’t know.

I’ve been to Red Lobster, but that was about 15 or so years ago. I think the clientele that time was entirely white.

      • ZWAK came for the two-fisted tentacle-fighting, stayed for the crushing existential nihilism.

Back when I ran drivers, I had a “we had a great month, I am taking everyone out to dinner” thing, and my mostly black drivers really wanted to go to Red Lobster. So, we went.

    • Mojeaux

If our recent jaunts to Red Lobster are anything to go by, I’d be inclined to concur.

    • creech

Have the lunch special, Shrimp Scampi, every month or so at RL and – in White neighborhood – 2/3 of the other patrons are always Black people. NTTIAWWT.

  20. Pope Jimbo

Looks like King Walz saved the day – again.

DFL leaders in the Senate and House say they’ve reached an agreement with Uber and Lyft that would increase pay for rideshare drivers.

It calls for a minimum payment of $1.28 per mile – and 31 cents per minute.

A spokesperson for Uber said on Sunday, “We applaud the tens of thousands of riders & drivers who sent close to 100,000 emails to legislators – your voices were heard. While the coming price increases may hurt riders and drivers alike, we will be able to continue to operate across the State under the compromise brokered by the Governor.”

If there is a silver lining to all of this, it is that I have had more acquaintances red pilled by this issue than anything else I can remember. They are all wondering why the fuck we need any law at all.

    • rhywun

      your voices were heard

Which voices, the ones clamoring to join the unemployment line or the ones eager to be priced out of a convenient ride?

What I can say is that if Uber gets any more expensive where I am I will not be using it anymore.

      • Sean

Why do you want to deny these people A LIVING WAGE?

        OPPRESSOR!

  21. DEG

Six people have been killed and the unrest has left a trail of burnt businesses and cars and looted shops, with road barricades restricting access to medicine and food. The business chamber said 150 companies had been looted and burnt.

    It’s a mostly peaceful protest.

    • Ted S.

And suddenly, magically, immigration is wicked. Because it’s wypipo immigration.

  22. Pope Jimbo

Minnesoda passed a law saying anyone could have a driver’s license, regardless of immigration status.

Data suggests a large number of Minnesotans have taken advantage of a new state law allowing them to apply for a driver’s license regardless of their immigration status.

The Driver’s License for All law, which took effect Oct. 1, eliminated the need to show proof of legal presence in the U.S. to get a standard Minnesota driver’s license or ID card.

I have a quibble with the phrase “a large number of Minnesotans” because, well they ain’t citizens. I also read the entire article and there is no mention of how we are going to ensure that these folks are registered to vote. We have no voter ID laws here, so no one ever has to show any ID at the polling precinct. However, you can still register to vote on Election Day at your polling place with a valid state driver’s license.

    • Pope Jimbo

Uffda. More mini-vans driving 20 mph everywhere (hiway, parking lots, driveway) piloted by a Somali gal wearing her hijab.

Data from the first six months since the law’s adoption show that some applicants have struggled to pass the exam. Nearly three-fourths of those who took the written knowledge test in Spanish between October and March failed. That’s higher than the statewide failure rate of 59 percent.

Peterson said that could be due to a combination of factors. Some test takers might have difficulty translating the Latin American version of Spanish on the test. Others just might need more time to prepare, she said.

“Definitely studying and being prepared for the test could better improve the pass rate,” Peterson said. “We do see some individuals come to us really not prepared, especially for the road test, and you can tell that they haven’t done enough practice time on the road.”

    • Pope Jimbo

Nevermind! I found a helpful govt FAQ that explains everything:

Should immigrants be worried about deportation, hassles or law
enforcement involvement if they get licensed or visit DVS?
      • No. The card identification is for all immigrants, including refugees, students and workers on
visas. A standard driver’s license or ID will be the same for someone without legal presence as
someone with legal presence. There will be no method for law enforcement to identify
immigration status from the standard license. The DL for All law specifically states that DVS will
not share citizenship/immigration status with agencies that enforce immigration law unless
      ordered by a court.

Will people be able to register or vote with their DL For All standard
      license?
      • Driver’s license for all does not change the requirements to register to vote. You must meet all
requirements to register to vote, including being a U.S. citizen. You can find more information on
voter registration requirements here. Under existing law, it is a felony offense if you vote when
you are not eligible to vote.

See, it is illegal to try to vote when you aren’t eligible. Even if you now have an ID that is indistinguishable from legal citizens ID. It is a good thing that all those illegal aliens are so law abiding that they would never take advantage of this.

Plus, I’m sure our DFL Sec of State will be aggressively auditing new voter registrations.

      • rhywun

t is a felony offense if you vote when you are not eligible to vote

        *wink, wink*

      • B.P.

Don’t worry. I’m sure they have to sign an affidavit or something when voting

      • Winded

I may have spotted many of them last night on the way west where WI-64 becomes MN-36. Hard to believe that bridge has been up almost 7 years now. Not hard to believe they’re tearing up one lane of it this year.

      • Mojeaux

Hi Winded! Do we know you? Welcome!

      • Winded

Not a fed (honest!), just a lurker. The only data I ever seem to get around to posting here are old track & field records and occasional car questions. And some Wisconsin/Minnesota stuff since I’m a border guy.

I would drop more NBA observations if there was a market here for it. I fed the Glib squirrels today so just wanted to see if I had any posting issues, but it wouldn’t matter even if I did. I still get a lot of pleasure here even if muted.

      • slumbrew

I’m afraid Pie is the only(?) NBA fan here, and he’s on DST (Dracula Standard Time).

      • Evan from Evansville

Hey, Winded! I’m quite sure there are plenty of NBA fans ’round here. Having said that, ’tis true I don’t recall seeing too much of it, but I’m a baseball boy. So! I see less of what I’m not looking for. (sage words, those…) I’m sure plenty would be interested to read/learn more. I certainly would, though in the sporting world, I’ve played…I think five, but I enjoy any and all.

Hockey’s my next favorite. Edmonton @ Vancouver Game 7? Yes, please! Odd, as I never gamble but it was Dad’s $20 anyway, I wisely picked Edmonton for Game 6. *twiddles fingers*

Glad to see ya ’round these parts!

      • tripacer

I think Washington has been doing this for some time… That was why they resisted the REAL ID thing.

      • B.P.

I’m an NBA fan, but a Nuggets fan, so I’ve been breathing into a bag for the last 24 hours.
