IFLA: The “Pre-recorded In Front of No Studio Audience” Edition of the Horoscope for the Week of June 30

by | Jun 30, 2024 | IFLA | 156 comments

Angel and Daisy want in.

If you remember last week ended on a major downer as Saturn decided to bring its titanic ass into things. This week the acute effects of that have passed as the alignments have broken up, but there will still keep things a bit downbeat for the first part of the week. Tuesday Leo gets an early birthmonth present as it provides a more attractive home for Mercury than Cancer does. Then on Wednesday everyone gets a break as Jupiter brings the happiness and luck via it’s (transitory) connection with the moon. Thursday is a mixed bag, with predictions of noise and smoke. Since I’ll be coming back from a shooting match, this really won’t be any big thing for me, though there is an indication of more actual fire on that day. Saturday isn’t looking too nice, expect some news about war (Mercury-Mars).

That fifth dog is a Pyrenees/Boxer mix. Great Pyrs make good looking hybrids.

Between her Golden Retriever father and her ultra-luxe coat, Lily loves spending time in the water.

Bonus inside-baseball humor: The current director of the National Range Officers Institute has in his career, revoked only two ROs’ credentials. One of those two miscreants (who has since worked/earned his way back into the game) gave me this at my last Major. I wear(?) it next to my NROI Chief Range Officer’s patch.

Curious how often Capricorn and Aries are perfectly juxtaposed.

I’ve got peppers already set on several plants. Also, just found two ladybugs making more ladybugs. The first batch did too. Found some egg clusters and larvae recently.

      Any gentlemanbugs?

Eating radishes, diakon, broccoli, had 1 banana pepper. One kohlrabi almost ready, another day or two.

Looks like the cool, rainy weather has slowed things down. Peppers/tomatoes with a few blossoms but no fruit yet. A couple tater bugs only.

Holy motherforking shirtballs it’s humid out here

    • Ted S.

Here too. I got my walk in before the thunderstorm, which didn’t seem to do much to lower the humidity.

    • Suthenboy

Where are you? I think the temp and humidity are triple digits here right now.

I am setting 12ft 4x4s to support a trellis about 30ft long. It’s so freakin’ baking out there I set one post and come in for a giant root beer on ice and a 20min cool off before going out to set another one.

      • KK, Plump & Unfiltered

Smoky Mountains. So far all the rain has gone around us 😭

      • Fourscore

Mama said there’d be days like this…

An 85 degree day here is unbearable, not because of the humidity necessarily but the temp.

      • R.J.

        In Florida. Very, very humid.

    • Tres Cool

Last Friday I was testing in Cuyahoga Heights, OH. I think the outside temp was the low 90s, and plenty of humidity.
I spent about 5 hours inside, on top of a shit incinerator. The indoor temp was between 105º and 107º, with tons of humidity.
Then I drove home sans a/c for 3 hours.

84 and 28% humidity. I’m on the patio and not sweating.

  9. Bob Boberson

Just skimming the morning comments something occurred to me.

Trump should calmly and with as much faux empathy as he can muster, call on Biden to end his campaign and relinquish his bid for a second term for his health and the sake of his family.

Watching the D’s eat each other alive over siding with OMB or having to back the corpse might be the single most delicious political freak out since the 2016 election.

    • Steve

I’m not a Trump supporter by any means but i got the impression he held back partially because it’s clear that Biden isn’t doing well. He had his moments but he left a lot of low-hanging fruit on the tree.

      • R C Dean

“He had his moments but he left a lot of low-hanging fruit on the tree.”

I doubt he did that to be nice. I think he did it because he’s just so scattered.

      • rhywun

I think he did it because his handlers told him to tone down his schtick.

      • Spudalicious

        Trumps “handlers”. Those poor bastards.

      • Gender Traitor

        They’re better off than Biden’s handle-ees.

      • Spudalicious

All of them are alcoholics and Xanax addicts at this point.

    • creech

No, let the Dems dangle with Biden. Trump has feet of clay and is much more vulnerable to a Democrat (not named Harris.)

      • Gender Traitor

I don’t see any way Trump could phrase such a suggestion without having it be twisted and attacked. As I believe has been quoted here recently, “…when the enemy is making a false movement we must take good care not to interrupt him.”

    • Raven Nation

I see among my proggie friends that one of the new interpretations is that Trump told so many lies so quickly that not even a genius like Biden could respond. This is similar to how Ds played the first Romney/Obama debate.

One national columnist compared it to the Gish Gallop: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gish_gallop

It’ll be interesting to see which group prevails.

      • R C Dean

The troo bleevers are looking for any straw to hang onto in the storm. They’ll eagerly go with the “blizzard of lies”. But they don’t matter because they were never not going to vote for the big D.

I think the real impact of the debate was that, regardless of the troo bleevers, it crashed the narrative that Biden is even remotely competent (in whatever sense of the term). I think the audience that matters is the funders, and they were apparently Not Pleased.

      • Raven Nation

Oh, and apparently, CNN is a fraud news organization which is seeking to undermine Biden.

    • R C Dean

I’m hoping you still have some kind of apologia on line – flowers, something. If nothing else, you need to apologize for being right, which is borderline unforgivable.

      • juris imprudent

Pretty sure the standard marriage contract says that being right may never be held over the head of the person that was wrong.

      • trshmnstr

being right may never be held over the head of the person that was wrong

There a reverse of the standard (D) exception applied to that rule, except D doesn’t stand for Democrat in this situation.

  12. Mojeaux

Organist playing national anthem for prelude music and I’m already tearing up. I’m susceptible to these little patriotic displays, sue me.

It’s not about what we ARE. It’s about what it could’ve been and maybe once was for a brief moment in time. It’s the IDEA, not the reality.

    • Suthenboy

You get it. You and as many other people outside of this place that I can count on my fingers.

    • Steve

“It’s about what it could’ve been and maybe once was for a brief moment in time.”

This is a proper patriotic response.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

“…and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark: that place where the wave finally broke, and rolled back.”

    • Suthenboy

What bothers me isn’t the morons who dont get it but the ones who do get it and actively despise the idea. Those are the people openly waging war on us right now. I have never seen it like this in my lifetime. I think it has been this bad before but certainly not in my lifetime.
We have always had pro-slavery, pro-socialist parties and movements. It puzzles me how anyone could sign on for that.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

My classmates and I were brought up hearing about the evil of Nazism (Anne Frank, Holocaust-survivor guest lecturers) but not of more recent Communism than that.

Yes, but the kind where getting fucked is the worst possible outcome.

      • R C Dean

    • Ted S.

I hope nobody from HR was included in the invite.

I got one of those three years ago the day after the July 4 holiday. It turned out we’d lost one of our contracts and a bunch of our group was either being reassigned or let go. I was one of the lucky minority whose job wasn’t affected.

      • Steve

No one from HR. I was chosen to start a pilot program out here in rural NC and they’re supposed to just be “checking in” but I’ve ruffled more than a few feathers this month and I don’t like unpredictable.

  14. Tres Cool

Im headed to the (216) for a short week.
    Alert Neph.

    • Nephilium

Wednesday the girlfriend and I are heading up to Western Reserve for one of their cocktail classes (Mastering the Mojito). It’s much more for her than me, as that’s one of her favorite drinks.

      • EvilSheldon

I always loved P.J. O’Rourke’s description of the mojito – “Too much rum and not enough soda and too much lime and not enough sugar.” They really hit the spot when it’s hot though. I may grab another bottle of Plantation and do some experimenting this weekend.

  15. creech

Did I hear correctly, during the debate, Trump say he would “absolutely” accept the results of a “fair and legal and good election.”. Or should I believe my congresswoman who continues to assert Trump refuses to say if he will accept the 2024 results? I guess the assholes won’t be happy until Trump says he will not complain even if there is widespread fraud and illegal fortification.

    • UnCivilServant

Well, if you look at his wording, no election in the US would qualify.

      • Suthenboy

I think that is his point.

“Yeah, I will follow the law. Will you?”

      • Suthenboy

Also, there is a lot of talk about the popular vote. Do we have any idea what the electoral college is going to do?
One of these is not like the other.

      • Gender Traitor

The “Real Clear” folks track trends on this map. Discounting states that are currently a “toss up” (which I believe I’ve heard is a saucy slang term in British English,) gives these results.

      • kinnath

The Iowa Electronic Market has a pretty good track record of predicting the winner.

This chart is the winner take all version of the presidential election (based on popular vote, not electoral college). So the market gives the wrong answer when a president loses the popular vote and wins the electoral college.

        https://apps.biz.uiowa.edu/IEMOffice/chart/market/PRES24_WTA

So the day after the debate, the market had a “oh shit” moment, but then said, “never mind” the next day. So the market is still predicting the democratic candidate (not necessarily Biden) wins the popular vote.

I suppose there a multiple interpretations of that.

“Well at least she is better educated”

You say that like its a good thing.

From the horoscope I’m guessing Macron is Pisces [Mediocrity, puerility, pettiness, weakness]. Just throw in some humiliation on top of that.

According to early estimates by pollsters Ipsos, the far-right National Rally is on course to win 34 percent of Sunday’s vote while French President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance suffered staggering losses, coming third with 20.3 percent of vote. The left-wing alliance made a strong showing with 28.1 percent of the vote.

  21. The Late P Brooks

    Streamlined

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign is planning to present a “streamlined” platform ahead of the Republican National Convention later this month, according to a memo obtained by NPR.

“The platform is an opportunity to make our vision clear, and to lay out a framework for policy making, while rejecting any special interest influence that seeks to make public policy stray from our clear and straightforward objectives,” stated the memo, signed by Trump advisers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles.

They said the platform should reflect Trump’s vision for America, and avoid creating lines of attack for his opponents.

They want to shut down the government with their secret agenda.

    • R C Dean

Look, Brooksie, if I vote, I’m already going to vote for Trump. You don’t need to sell me on him.

    • Suthenboy

“….rejecting any special interest influence that seeks to make public policy stray from our clear and straightforward objectives.”

The debate and the aftermath thus far tells us that the president does not run the country. Now you know who does.

  22. UnCivilServant

I used my brand new All-Clad mini-casserole pan today. Quick review: The thick walls of that bastard retain heat like a son of a bitch. On the plus side, it slows down your food cooling off after taking it out of the overn – on the down side, an unsuspecting cook used to thinner-walled dishes might make the mistake of trying to touch the lid too soon, despite it sitting off to the side off the rest of the pan for a while. Thankfully, I did not injure myself.

    • R C Dean

Mrs. Dean favors All-Clad. From which I can only conclude that you made an excellent choice.

She also likes Le Creuset (enameled cast iron), if you’re looking for cookware that operationalizes a heat sink.

      • UnCivilServant

I was tired of cheaply made chinesium cookware.

The All-Clad is definately on the opposite end of the spectrum from that. This thing is solid.

      • Grummun

We’ve got enameled cast iron pans from La Creuset, Staub and Lodge. I’m sure a cast iron snob will tell me I’m wrong, but Lodge gets the job done at a fraction of the cost of the French iron.

      • Gustave Lytton

The enameled French pots are a joy to cook in and a solid warranty. Lodge is decent but their cast iron is not ready to use without a bit of prep work first. Have both and use each for different things. Also carbon steel pans. And Allclad.

    • Spudalicious

I’ve been using AllClad for many moons. It’s the schnizzle.

  23. Spudalicious

Cookware: We have an induction stove. It is to a gas stove what a gas stove is to the old electric coil stove.
Drawback is that our choices of cookware are limited.

      • The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

        You’re a mad man.

I would say that gas stoves are actually a little easier to control than my induction, but the induction can get crazy hot so amazing for searing and it has almost no waste hear, which is a god send in summer. And just like gas it can go from 0-100 instantly.

Electric stoves are okay of all you do is boil your food, or enjoy burning it.

    • rhywun

I have electric for the first time in – checks watch – 30 years? I cook much more now than I did back then. It’s not as bad as I expected but yeah I miss the gas.

So pretty much business as usual for me.

  26. EvilSheldon

I had a nice little trip to the range this afternoon. I just worked on standards.

Good: Draw to 1st shot in the 0.8x range with one at 5 yards in 0.68, a new personal record. Four Alphas (that’s draw, two shots, reload, two more shots) at 5 yards in under 2.20. El Presidente drill in 4.74/48 points. An M run and also a new record.

Eh: My strong hand only and weak hand only shooting needs some work. Possibly related, I’m having trouble with my grip out of the holster – need to look at that in dry practice.

Bad: I also wanted to rezero the 11.5″ AR, since I just stuck a new-to-me scope on it. Unfortunately the second-hand battery was so low that the dot was all but invisible at 50 yards. I got it close but I’m gonna have to hit the rifle range again next week. I’m also sunburned as fuck.

In a way, you’re right. Star Wars is Flash Gordon fanfic. The movie studios declined Lucas’s offer to make a Flash Gordon movie.

(It was either Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers; I don’t remember which)

I get gently lied to about pretty much everything in my personal life. Ah well, beer and ciggies and knowing. Two out of three ain’t bad.

    Beverly Hills cop 4? Sheesh.

      My favorite of theirs.

    Morning, Glibs.

I woke up after the time I normally would have left the house. I was most distressed. I made it here to work only five minutes before the start of my workday.

    *sigh*

    • UnCivilServant

Of course, being an abbreviated morning routine, I forgot it was trash day and my can isn’t at the curb to be collected.

      😣

Good morning, homey, U, Sean, cav973, and somewhere upthread, TAFKALack!

      • UnCivilServant

        Morning.

is everyone running late today? 😜

      • Gender Traitor

I’m not going in until this afternoon, mainly to keep my boss from panicking about backing me up on payroll for the first time in many months. 🙄 😨

      • UnCivilServant

Given his recent change of role, wouldn’t it make sense to identify someone else to be said payroll backup?

      • Gender Traitor

The new CFO starts on the 22nd, so she’ll eventually become my payroll backup. Traditionally, the only folks who are allowed to know how much everyone gets paid are the CEO, the CFO, and me.

      • UnCivilServant

Must suck for the employees, wondering how much they’ll be paid this time.

        😝

      • Gender Traitor

Well, it DOES force inspire them to be nice to me! 😁

      • Sean

        🙂

    Mornin’

Instead of the gym this morning, gym after work.

The fireworks last night stopped around when I went to sleep.

    The Sun is shining.

“The fireworks last night stopped around when I went to sleep.”

There is no such thing as a coincidence.
