IFLA: the “A Bit of Luck” Edition of the Horoscope for the Week of August 25

by | Aug 25, 2024 | IFLA | 82 comments

Hopefully everyone’s still here after last week. This week transitions from that nonsense through “kinda boring” to “oh, hey!” The final bit of the cycle of suck will happen on the 28th, when you can expect domestic disturbances, particularly of the drunken Irish in an unhappy marriage sort. But then things get much better. Notably, Mercury returns to direct motion, bringing felicity to felines and then giving a major burst of good fortune when it aligns with the moon at the end of the month/beginning of September. Enjoy!

I usually see his boat presented as a punt, not a sailed vessel

I’m reposing in my lawn chair throne right now, with my dog beside me watching the cars go by.

    • PieInTheSky

a true libertarian has enough wooded property that no cars are visible from the lawn. lame.

  3. The Gunslinger

The flys are biting my legs. If someone could look into that, that would be great.

    • Fourscore

Mosquitoes mostly gone, a few deer flies left but all in all we’re mostly bug free. Now to stave off the critters that want to eat my garden bounty. So far 2 raccoons, 2 cotontails, 5 pocket gophers. Haven’t seen any mice in the garden but I’m sure they are there.

  4. The Gunslinger

Also, it’s my 29th wedding anniversary today.

    • Fourscore

Well, Congrats to you, Gunslinger. With any kind of luck you’ll enjoy celebrating many more!

I mean, good luck to you all the way on the other side of the country, hopefully I will have a similar, YET COMPLETELY SEPARATE experience. NTTAWWT.

So you’re saying I need to swing by the liquor store?

      Drive through or easy parking?

    • Toxteth O'Grady

Guinness or Murphy’s? Jameson, Midleton, or Bushmills?

I’d like to request a reread for the unfortunate Tauruses.

Another week like last week will force me to go from provider to client

    A good read:

Why Are Female Friendships the Ideal? (‘Cause Dude Friendships Also Rock)

If an alien scientist came to Earth, looked at the data on male and female friendships (see the study references below), and was asked which were better, he’d reasonably conclude that men’s friendships were superior. On paper, it seems like a clear win for the guys.

Yet our society elevates female friendships as the ideal. We’re constantly told that men have a friendship problem and should strive to be more like women in this regard.

    • Steve

That was interesting. Lemme risk too much male exposure to make an observation and a critique:

Friendships based on self-disclosure and those based on shared experiences aren’t really that different. They’re just two roads that lead to the same destination which is a sense of validation and belonging in spite of someone’s autistic obsessions.

The author undermined his own thesis by describing typically masculine friendships as superficial.

    • Suthenboy

Are male or female friendships better?
What is the meaning of life?
How are things supposed to be?

Many people spend most of their lives pondering the great questions, all of which are not valid questions.

As far as measuring things outside of the hard sciences the only metric is ‘what works best’, best being what produces the most good.
Good being happiness, prosperity, peace and health; none of which are stand alone.

      • Tundra

        Well said, Suthen.

And thanks, MikeS. Excellent article. AoM puts out some good content.

Now Batting for the Red Sox: The Other Team’s Catcher

It all began back on June 26, when umpires decided to suspend a game between the Blue Jays and Red Sox at Fenway Park in the second inning. The break happened to come right in the middle of Jansen’s plate appearance. Under normal circumstances, he would be set to complete his at-bat when the game resumed two months later.

But on July 27, the Blue Jays traded Jansen away. Which means that on Tuesday, a pinch hitter will step in and Jansen will be catching the rest of an at-bat that he himself began in the batter’s box.

    • Sean

      Sounds gay.

      • MikeS

Well, it does involve the Red Sox.

    • Tundra

      That’s hilarious!

      Only in baseball.

    • MikeS

Hmmm…I could put an end to my constant post-nasal drip, but I might get cancer instead. I’ll have to think on this a bit.

    • MikeS

Another side-effect: Severe allergic reaction. wut?

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

No such thing as a med without actual or potential adverse effects. If someone’s dangerously allergic to foods I could see this med as totally being worth it.

  13. Mojeaux

Three hours out with XY today. Took the interchange I was/am scared to death of him taking, but he did okay. It was Sunday, not rush hour, so what the hell. Taking him to take the test in the morning and I think there’s a good chance he’ll pass. Still twitchy about his driving 50 miles round trip straight off the bat with a fresh license and an unfamiliar car, though. Speaking of, we should be getting that back today.

And now I find out an 18-year-old boy was killed early this morning in a head-on collision 2 blocks from my house. My nerves are stretched.

    • Raven Nation

Also, I’ll respond soon over times for September.

  14. Raven Nation

UCS: saw your e-mail. Will respond soon. The last two weeks have been, umm, interesting.

    • UnCivilServant

Interesting times are not the best 🙁

  15. Suthenboy

Damn. I can’t win for losing.
Oppression? Yep, just got back from the grocery store. On the radio someone explaining the effects of price controls. A waste of breath. Price controls are the tool of extreme tyrants and the worst, dumbest thing that can be done to any economy yet I remember when the evil bitch was explaining her plan to a cheering crowd.
We are drowning in an ocean of idiocy.

  16. creech

Report from my local GOP operative: their internal polling had 37 RFK voters. Yesterday, they attempted to call them back. They caught up to 20 of them: 11 will now vote Harris, 6 say Trump, one said Stein and two haven’t made up mind. This is a poll in Philly burb. RFK drop out doesn’t seem to help OMB

    ,

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

With all due respect, contacting 37 RFK voters isn’t even a good measure of the mindset of RFK voters, especially when it’s in a specific geographic location.

    • Suthenboy

Where is ‘local’. I imagine localities vary widely in the result.

      • Suthenboy

Oh, didn’t see Philly burb. That hardly seems like a good measure. If you polled both RFK voters in Louisiana it would be 100% Trump.

    • MikeS

Did they ask how many of those 11 had already switched to Harris when she was “nominated”?

      • MikeS

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Expected Exit Could Help Trump, Hurt Harris

In a Wall Street Journal national poll of the contest released in late July after Harris entered the race, Kennedy received 4% support. That was down from 7% in early July—when Biden was still in the contest.

A Kennedy departure would likely help Trump, pollsters say. Many disillusioned Democrats who initially said they might back Kennedy already moved to Harris after Biden dropped out. That left mostly dissatisfied Republicans in the Kennedy column—and they may be more inclined to pick Trump over Harris if Kennedy now exits.

      • creech

Don’t know but the previous poll was done two weeks after Harris had been crowned, but before the DNC convo. RFK votes only mattered in swing states like PA and were certainly not found on abundance in rural areas. Therefore, those votes now going predominately to Harris have to be of concern to the Trump camp.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

This is anecdotal data with an almost 50 percent nonresponse/didn’t answer rate. The only thing it says is that those who are willing to switch to Kamala might be slightly more likely to answer the phone. The sample is too small with too high of a drop out rate to mean anything and if it reflects reality it’s only by chance.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

      37?

      • MikeS

    Sufficiently shitty.

Analysis of a rare Schlegelmilch Carbine.

  18. The Late P Brooks

Upon further consideration and reading, it looks like what kamala wants isn’t technically “price controls”. It’s beginning to sound to me more like an excess profits tax which will, of course, be selectively applied for greatest political effect.

That should help the economy and bring us all together.

    • Steve

It’s a club, and we ain’t in it.

      Alternatively:

If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu

    • Fourscore

The stock market depends on excess profits. I’m hoping that the smart guys in the mutual funds department are finding those companies with the excess profits. So far their track record hasn’t set any records.

  19. Suthenboy

The appeal to authority fallacy seems to be most insidious when that authority is one’s self. Titan’s of industry begin to imagine that they are smarter than everyone else in every area. This is an easy mistake to make because the bulk of humanity are idiots and cowards, I will grant that. The dangerous part is that they have the resources to force their vision on everyone else. Because of their human foible they inevitably tweak that vision into one that gives them a hedge on increasing their own success. That is when things go awry.
I was perusing a list of people who financed the bolshevik revolution and it is a who’s who of the Gates, Musks, Bezos’, and Buffets and Zuckerbergs of their day. Also the whole thing would not have happened were it not for Woodrow Wilson’s active support. *spits*
Their primary motive was a promise of access to Russian resources and markets upon the ushering in of utopia. How did that work out? There was never any groundswell, grassroots support for the bolsheviks in Russia. Communism was imposed on the Russian people by outside forces.
I see the same thing happening today here. Some weird intermingling of communism/fascism is being foisted, or attempting to be foisted on us by the ‘robber barons’ of our day.

    • Steve

It’s always the same story. Hubris drives progress until it all comes crashing down. Not one of us is smart enough to stop it because it’s as much a part of human nature as anything else.

      • Suthenboy

Hubris is exactly the word I should have used. Thank you

I met a woman a few weeks ago who told me that David Carradine comes to her window at night, anesthetizes her by placing a bean up her nose, and swaps out body parts like her head or legs.

I don’t really have any insight into that, just thought I’d share.

    • MikeS

I mean, it does sound like something David Carradine might do.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Seems a little unusual. Does she have nice tits?

      • Steve

I wouldn’t want to find out

      • Steve

        Okay, that was hilarious

      • Suthenboy

It seems like batshit with a side of lunacy is on the menu today. I didn’t see it in the horoscope…how did they miss that?

      • Tundra

        OMG.

        Thanks, Suthen.

    Back to the dark ages

“But I have a more generous interpretation, one that is truer to my experience of Donald Trump as he is today,” Kennedy continued in a Sunday post on the social platform X.

“’Make America Great Again’ recalls a nation brimming with vitality, with a can-do spirit, with hope and a belief in itself. It was an America that was beginning to confront its darker shadows, could acknowledge the injustice in its past and present, yet at the same time could celebrate its successes,” he continued.

“It was a nation of broad prosperity, the world’s most vibrant middle class, and a idealistic belief (though not consistently applied) in freedom, justice, and democracy. It was a nation that led the world in innovation, productivity, and technology,” he added. “And it was the healthiest country in the world.”

Kennedy said he’s confident that the former president shares this optimistic vision for the country.

That would be a good message.
