¡Martes por la tarde, enlces mexicanos!

by | Aug 13, 2024 | Daily Links | 167 comments

The first 90 mins of my day has brought despair upon my team as nobody seems to know why files saved on the SharePoint suddenly got corrupted, and are impossible to open. I asked IT for assistance but they responded back at 0300 (yes they are in India) the files are corrupted and I should ask the document’s owner.

He didn’t notice I was the owner, and so I am now openly discussing the the wisdom of my company’s “everything must be on the SharePoint” policy.

A typical Business Insider puff piece on an American Ex-Pat explaining how Mexicans are different:

When we first bought our home, I didn’t realize how important courtesy is in Mexico. Thankfully, I have since softened and, in fact, have grown very fond of the gentle niceties many Mexicans use.

If, for example, I’m asking directions or entering a shop, I know to first say Buenos días or Buenos tardes. Similarly, I always greet the driver and my fellow passengers when getting on a bus. When leaving a restaurant, I’m sure to say, as many Mexicans do, Buen provecho (meaning bon appetit) to the remaining diners.

Some courtesies make me laugh. If a person walks down the street in Mexico and sneezes, complete strangers from a block away will exclaim, Salud!, which means “good health” but also “cheers.”

After almost 20 years of living in Guanajuato, I’m still discovering quirky-to-me aspects of Mexican communication. The unexpected twists in the way Mexicans express themselves occasionally confuse me, but they are mostly a source of laughter and pleasure.

Apparently, Americans really don’t like when you say “good morning!” Who knew?

Yes, its smoking. Okay, thanks. A volcano!?

I can see how one might think this is a good idea.

I know a special someone that could use a kidney. Make sure I get him for the office secret santa this year.

.You probably saw the video of the plane in a flat spin crashing Brazil because apparently they pissed off a wizard or something. There were no survivors.

“Take a look at Argentina. They’re new president went full MAGA and they’re doing tremendous. Never done better than they’re doing now.” MAGA, ¡Afuera! Whatever the universes are synching, finally ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

They aren’t Lou Reed, but really who is?

That was not the smooth landing that Brazilians are known for.

    • kinnath

Never made it to the strip.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

From what I hear everyone on the plane got waxed.

    • juris imprudent

I suspect it cleared a large patch of bush.

    • The Other Kevin

I heard the pilot failed to adjust the trim.

      • R.J.

It was curtains for them all…
Sadly it did not match the rug.

      • Tonio

[golf clap] for TOK. Honorable mention for RJ.

    • The Wrath of ZWAAAAAAKKKK!!!

I hear the pilot thought he could shave a few seconds off of their time.

    • KSuellington

From extensive exploration of the Brazilian bush, it is commonly trimmed and manicured, but rarely clear cut.

      • Tonio

Waxed. Apparently they pour molten wax over the pubes, let it harden, then pull off the wax which also pulls the pubes out by the root.

  2. JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

“typical Business Insider puff piece on an American Ex-Pat explaining how Mexicans are different”

That guy must be a real asshole, because I do most of those things and I’m not even Hispanic.

    • SDF-7

That’s my thought as well — “Let me guess, this asshole is a New Yorker and never went south of the Mason-Dixon line before? Because that’s all pretty standard far (or used to be) in most places, especially the South.”

Second thought was — “Isn’t Mexican culture more your classic Honor culture? Yeah — you damned well better observe the niceties….”

    • mexican sharpshooter

I Am Hispanic, and I don’t do any of that.

      • Ted S.

So what you’re saying is that you’re a real asshole? :-p

      • mexican sharpshooter

        I’ve never denied it

      • Sensei

        Not a “real” Hispanic!

      • rhywun

I actually do greet the bus driver. I would not think of greeting other passengers, though. That’s weird.

  3. SDF-7

The first 90 mins of my day has brought despair upon my team as nobody seems to know why files saved on the SharePoint suddenly got corrupted,

Ugh — I’m likewise in the boat of “Use it, don’t question us!”… but my first thought regarding Enterprise level storage has to be… there are checkpoints, right? (Not backups per se… but backups in practice). You should be able to roll back to something prior to the corruption… and the checkpoints should be mirrored across cloud storage.

Note — I don’t know what of that is default (I would think all of it!) and what must be configured… but that’s damned well the questions I’d be asking.

Good luck. (We’re all counting on you…)

    • The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

We’re also on a SharePoint kick right now.

It already crapped out once, so hair warning to just store things in multiple spots, which is exactly what they don’t want… Whatever.

    • mexican sharpshooter

Listen, I just got a copy of the contract from where the local office stores it on their SharePoint.

  4. JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

That full cover photo is a reminder that sometimes it’s best to leave something to the imagination.

    • The Other Kevin

My latest artistic endeavor is 50’s style pinup art. I’m drawing nude models and putting clothes on them. It’s an entirely different type of art. Altogether.

      • Nephilium

The ladies who do the pinup shoots (that I’ve met at least) put in a tremendous amount of work on the hair and makeup. Makes me feel like a slob for being able to get by in the culture by throwing on a bowling shirt, a nice hat, and a clean pair of pants.

      • Tonio

Surprisingly, I’m a fan of that genre. Particularly the bikini-clad girls holding the big wrench (or whatever) for the advertising calendars distributed to mechanics, plumbers, and other trades.

      • R.J.

        Pants? You wear pants?
        That’s fancy.

      • The Other Kevin

I have an idea for a side gig, in which women pay me to paint them as a pinup girl. I’m working on prototypes, and I have a few that I’m happy with. I chatted with one of the derby girls who’s into that sort of thing, and she seems to think it would work. One or two more and I’ll see if I can find any customers.

      • Nephilium

        R.J.:

I have been known to go bowling shirt with cargo shorts, just to irritate people.

For the guys who have hair, I have seen some that have spent almost as much time on their hair as the women. I never did get into any of the pop up barber shops (that specialized in facial hair) during the times I went to Viva (and depending on the band lists, may not be returning to Viva).

      • KSuellington

        Best. Side gig. Ever.

      • The Other Kevin

KS, my thoughts exactly. Women take off some or all of their clothes and pay ME. It is every man’s dream.

      • KSuellington

You have a highly understanding wife TOK.

      • EvilSheldon

I have a friend down Tejas way who does exactly this style of photography. I oughta put y’all in touch.

      • The Other Kevin

I do have an understanding wife. Being in the fitness world she appreciates an attractive body, male or female. Recently we were driving, and went past a rather comely lass wearing spandex shorts. “Wow she’s got a great butt!” I was thinking it, and she said it.

      • Tundra

I have a friend down Tejas way who does exactly this style of photography. I oughta put y’all in touch.

I know one in Mpls as well. Who knew it was such a thing?

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

“I was thinking it, and she said it.”

        It’s a trap!

      • Tundra

Somewhere I have a copy of this particular Vargas art.

Fake news. I’ve been on many reservations and Indian chicks look nothing like that.

        Unfortunately.

      • Tonio

        Godspeed, TOK. Godspeed.

      • slumbrew

There’s a running group that meets right near my house on Mondays; girl in spandex shorts yesterday had such a phenomenal butt that I did a double take.

I maintain it’s the keystone of the body – first out of shape, last into shape. I submit it’s impossible to have a great butt but otherwise be out of shape.

      • DEG

Somewhere I have a copy of this particular Vargas art. Highly problematic, heteronormative, colonialist and othering all together.

        Beautiful.

      • rhywun

For the guys who have hair, I have seen some that have spent almost as much time on their hair as the women.

I have a friend in a bowling-shirt sub-culture and he absolutely does spend a lot of time on his hair.

      • Mojeaux

I walked around Rosie Rivetertly a lot when I was DIYing, although I was fully clothed in jeans and tee shirt. Red front-knotted bandanna, leather gloves, and steel-toed boots qualify, right?

      • The Wrath of ZWAAAAAAKKKK!!!

        “Godspeed, TOK. Godspeed.”

See, TOK, even the ‘Mo’s want Mo!

      • R C Dean

“Wow she’s got a great butt!” I was thinking it, and she said it.“

“Hmm? Oh, who? Sorry, I was, uhh, watching the road.”

      • R C Dean

“fully clothed in jeans and tee shirt. Red front-knotted bandanna, leather gloves, and steel-toed boots qualify, right?”

        Hawt.

  5. Nephilium

If, for example, I’m asking directions or entering a shop, I know to first say Buenos días or Buenos tardes.

Where the fuck was he from that he didn’t greet people before asking them for something?

    • slumbrew

Apparently it was OK to be a rude asshole when he lived in the US.

    • Drake

      Urban NY, NJ, Philly…

      • Sensei

Why yes. But in the burbs of all three states everybody says, “hello” first.

Also regardless, if it’s a request I still always add “please”.

But in a busy NYC restaurant the host or hostess doesn’t want the “good morning how are you? Just the ‘three people please’ “

      • rhywun

        *shrug*

Most of us are just as polite in town as in the burbs.

The International Diabetes Foundation reports that the number of people with diabetes aged 20 to 79 in Latin America rose from 8,533,300 in 2000 to 32,497,100 in 2021.

Adhering closely to the diet and exercise routines of our norteamericano former farmworkers, I see.

  7. SDF-7

I can see how one might think this is a good idea.

Or maybe he had an Alternate plan.

He was clearly a Mains man

    • Tonio

Apparently electricity theft is a big thing throughout Latin America, particularly in the favelas. People tap directly into the power lines and there are lots of electrocutions and electrical fires.

I know a special someone that could use a kidney. Make sure I get him for the office secret santa this year.

I know OMWC had a hangover Sunday — but I didn’t think it got to a whole kidney issue yet…. or did you mean a liver?

    • The Wrath of ZWAAAAAAKKKK!!!

Problem with donating a kidney to OMWC is that he will have three, and I will have just one.

Between Millei and OMB teasing getting Musk on board as part of a Commission to reduce government expenditures… well, I can only be so excited at a time, dammit! Chainsaws for everyone!

    • B.P.

      Most excellent.

  12. The Late P Brooks

    Not even close

Trump and Musk’s discussion on the climate crisis, therefore, “spelunked down into entirely new levels of stupidity”, according to Bill McKibben, a veteran climate activist and co-founder of 350.org. McKibben wrote it was “the dumbest climate conversation of all time”.

“The damaging impacts of climate change, and in particular from more extreme weather events, such as wildfires, floods, heatwaves, more intense hurricanes, are actually in many respects exceeding the predictions made just a decade ago,” said Michael Mann, a leading climate scientist and author. “It is sad that Elon Musk has become a climate change denier, but that’s what he is. He’s literally denying what the science has to say here.”

Mann said that if CO2 levels get so high breathing becomes difficult, then the impacts of the climate crisis “will be so devastating as to have already caused societal collapse. It’s actually Elon’s ill-informed and ill-premised statements that are causing headaches and nausea.”

But McKibben and Mann plumbing the depths of climate hysteria is some serious dumb.

    • kinnath

It would be awesome if Musk were to start fucking directly with Mann.

      • Suthenboy

It is amazing to me the mendacity of these people. What a fucking scam. Their every argument is begging the question…the premises assuming the truth of the assertions and the assertions are easily debunked by simply looking at the records.
Has the hockey stick data been made available for review yet?

      • Tonio

And don’t forget that we’re not allowed to see their data, because they signed NDAs with foreign governments to get data for their studies which were funded by the US taxpayer.

      • rhywun

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Careful what y’all say anout Mann on the climate stuff, he’ll sue you and win. He’s also in my opinion, not a definitive statement, a twat of immense proportions and he looks like he gets, looks like he gets not does get (necessarily), his kicks molesting puppies.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

“Mann said that if CO2 levels get so high breathing becomes difficult”

After a little digging: “Once the concentration of CO2 goes beyond around 4,000 parts per million the performance of humans is affected. In picture theatres and lecture rooms, the CO2 concentration can reach 2,000 parts per million depending on the ventilation of the room or theatre. In submarines, the CO2 concentration can reach 8,000 ppm whilst on the space shuttle the danger level if set at 6,000 ppm. A lot depends on the functions the humans have to carry out and their physical fitness.”

We are currently at about 400 ppm.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

We have plenty of cushion I see, nice little lie by omission on his part.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

At the mushroom farm we had some rooms above 3500ppm, it’s not a great place for mammals,

    • B.P.

Now we’re creating so much CO2 that we’re at risk of not being able to breathe? Is this a new claim?

    • EvilSheldon

It’s such a surprise to me that Mann doesn’t know basic biology, in addition to physics and meteorology.

      • Suthenboy

        Or Historical Geology.

The guy and his ilk are trying not to break their 100% perfect record of being wildly wrong on all of their prognostications.

  13. Suthenboy

Mexico is different article summed up: Mexican culture is far more collectivist than American culture.

It is a very bad idea. Very obviously a bad idea.

Why is MSN telling us this?

They had to tell us no survivors? Half of a second after seeing the plane I knew there were going to be no survivors.

Argentinian economy: It wont matter. The free lunch people dont care and will never learn. In their minds the only way they can improve their lot is through theft. The fixed pie mentality.

  14. J. Frank Parnell

Apparently, Americans really don’t like when you say “good morning!”

Yep. Someone says “good morning” to me, I bash them in the head with a mop handle.

    • Nephilium

Well, it is a bit presumptuous to assume that it’s a good morning. I’ll generally just stick to morning, or ask how their day is going.

      • Yusef drives a Kia

        ‘Sup?

“It’s within the realm of possibility that I am the reason why he changed his mind about being gay. And, for that, I am not sorry. I’m sorry about Project 2025, but I was not going to take one for the team,” he concludes.

Colby tells the Daily Dot that he was not able to provide any people he contemporaneously told the story to corroborate the story. But that given the circumstances and “embarrassing” nature of the date, adding “I never thought I would see him again.”

    Governor Dadbro knows best

A former Minnesota bar owner who now commutes two hours a day to sling suds in neighboring Wisconsin said Gov. Tim Walz’s restrictive pandemic-era lockdowns in the state “decimated” local businesses — and caused financial ruin for those who stood up for their livelihoods.

“I think he’s an evil man who overstepped his role as the governor. He took small businesses and ripped them up. He destroyed us,” Lisa Zarza, 52, told The Post.

“I had to leave the state to be able to legally work and make a living.”

    ——-

She said when shelter-in-place and business closures first went into effect in March, 2020, “I did everything I was supposed to do. I wore my mask, I social distanced. I stayed at home.”

But as the months wore on and the state slowly reopened, salons, bars and restaurants remained under Walz’s closure orders — which weren’t completely lifted statewide until May of 2021.

    Silence, nonessential peasant.

    • Tundra

I wish the fucking DNC had picked another commie asshole. Re-reading all this shit we lived through is making me angry all over again.

      • R.J.

We are gonna have to ride this wave for a while. People are going to come out of the woodwork talking about how wonderful his lockdowns, snitch lists and excess taxation was all so grand. A lot of people love that. Which is why states’ rights are so important. You love taking it in the fanny from uncle Walz? Good, go move there. Freedom loving people will move South to other states. The federal government must shrink to nothing and let us flourish.

    • rhywun

Meanwhile, the MSM is praising his “masculinity”.

You can’t fucking make this shit up.

      • Fourscore

I for one am glad Walz is out of here.

My Carhartt coat doesn’t look like his. Mine is stained and frayed on the cuffs, looks like it has been worked in, which it has

      • Pope Jimbo

Forget the Carhartt jacket, check out his blindingly white tennis shoes he wore when he and Kamala had that genuine moment on the phone when she selected him as VP.

Not only were those never worn anywhere near a barn, they probably never have been worn outside the gov’s mansion. Definitely not on a gravel road.

Mrs. Holiness didn’t let me bring my Carhartt knockoff to Japan because she said it was too grungy. Stains and frayed cuffs. Also a couple spots that still have those little burrs that are impossible to completely remove.

    • Pope Jimbo

What is she complaining about? She didn’t get put in jail for 90 days for violating lock down orders.

The owner of a bar in Albert Lea was found guilty of six criminal misdemeanor charges and sentenced to 90 days in jail for defying Gov. Tim Walz’s executive orders to close her business last winter.

The jury found Lisa Hanson, 57, guilty after deliberating for an hour, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported.

Judge Joseph Bueltel gave her a 90-day jail sentence and a $1,000 fine. He says he wanted to send a message to people who violate executive orders.

Hanson had flaunted her defiance of an order to shut bars and restaurants to indoor dining late last year. She argued that Walz’s orders were unconstitutional.

    NLRB is on the case

The United Auto Workers union has filed unfair labor practice charges against Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk after the two discussed on social media about Musk supposedly firing striking workers.

In documents filed Tuesday with the National Labor Relations Board, the union alleges that both men interfered with workers who may want to exercise their right to join a union. The NLRB said it would look into the charges, which are a request for the agency to investigate.

    ——-

The NLRB said it would investigate the complaints, one filed against the Trump campaign and the other naming Tesla Inc., the electric vehicle, battery and solar panel manufacturer based in Austin, Texas, and led by Musk.

The charges stem from statements made by Trump Monday night during a conversation between the two men on X, the social media platform Musk now owns. The former president spent much of the discussion that lasted more than two hours focused on his recent assassination attempt, illegal immigration and plans to cut government regulations.

But during a discussion about government spending, Trump praised Musk for firing workers who went on strike. The UAW contends this could intimidate workers for the Trump campaign or at Tesla who might want to join a union.

    Trump should fire the NLRB.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Meh, I’m sure they’ll do a fair and unbiased inves…ugh, I can’t even bring myself to type that in sarcastic jest.

  21. DEG

Trump also drew parallels with his own MAGA political movement and Milei’s policies.

      • DEG

    • Mojeaux

I haven’t listened to the thing much because Trump had something going on that made him sound like an old sibilant geezer whose dentures don’t fit. Anyway, one talking point I read was that he wanted to get rid of the Dept of Education.

      That would be nice.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Supposedely it was because he just used an iPhone as his mic and it made it sound jacked up.

      • Mojeaux

I thought I heard it was a tech problem, but it was still hard for me to listen to.

      • DEG

Anyway, one talking point I read was that he wanted to get rid of the Dept of Education.

        That would be nice.

He’ll need Congress. Thomas Massie brought a measure to the floor for a vote on abolishing the Department of Education while McCarthy was Speaker. Only 160 Republicans voted for it, McCarthy being one of them.

Johnson won’t let the measure come up for a vote.

  22. The Late P Brooks

Sanjukta Paul, a law professor at the University of Michigan, said the UAW charges have real substance because the comments from Trump and Musk could “chill” efforts by workers to act collectively, including union organizing, or just getting together to improve working conditions.

“You’re approvingly describing, you’re wholeheartedly commending the blatant violation of our main federal labor statute,” she said. “It would constitute interference with protected rights.”

    Blasphemers!

It is not surprising to me what sectors these people are coming from, what is a bit eyebrow-raising is how full throated they are in demanding outright censoring of opinion, speech, etc.

      • Tundra

Small dog attack. Looks surprisingly like affection.

Apparently the Elon-Trump cozy has gotten a shit-ton more attention than anybody thought it would. Elon has offered to do a sit-down with Kamala, too.

I saw it suggested somewhere that Trump do one of these a week, and just take it to the people.

This would not have been possible without Elon buying Twitter. He and JK Rowling, using their fuck-you money to benefit mankind.

    • slumbrew

I’ve been tearing through the Cormoran Strike novels in part as an ‘atta girl’ for Rowling.

Poor woman could use the money, I assume.

        /kindle

      • slumbrew

        Yep, very enjoyable.

So far, I’ve been able to get all of them via Kindle loan from my library, which is nice.

      • The Hyperbole

Looked them up, they sound absolutely dreadful, formulaic detective series that will probably run seven or eight books too long, or worse yet be written by the same people that write James Patterson’s and Stuart Wood’s books. I’ll give it a go, however, as I am not one to dismiss things out of hand based on feelings or other peoples opinions. If I’m wrong I’ll gladly admit it.

      • Tundra

Why not? Library had the first one. Will report back.

Also-the EU guy who threatened Musk over the Trump interview hate-speech-a-thon got a slap on the wrist from his bosses for interfering in a foreign election.

    • slumbrew

Seriously? I’m sure it’s toothless but still unexpected.

    • Mojeaux

That surprises me. The EU can block it all it wants for its people because they aren’t voting.

      Or are they?

    • Pope Jimbo

I’m waiting for one of the Big Tech companies to tell the EU to pound sand.

Instead of complying, just fire all their EU workers and use geofencing to block access to their sites. The citizens of the EU might let immigrant rapists run free without much complaining, but shut off Facebook and there’d be riots.

Of course, the Big Tech love those regulations because it keeps the little guys from competing. They can afford to comply with all the stupid laws, but some little startup can’t.

    WTF?

A former University of Kentucky student facing assault charges after repeatedly hurling a racial slur at a Black student on campus in 2022 pleaded guilty on Monday, following mediation in court, her attorney told CNN.

Sophia Rosing pleaded guilty in Fayette County Circuit Court to four counts of fourth-degree assault, one count of disorderly conduct, and one count of alcohol intoxication, her attorney, Fred Peters, said. She had previously also been charged with third-degree assault on a police officer or probation officer, but that felony charge was dropped as part of the plea agreement, according to Peters.

    ——-

Fayette Commonwealth’s Attorney Kimberly Baird told CNN she recommended a sentence of up to 12 months for the assault charges, as outlined by law, to be served concurrently; as well as 100 hours of community service; and a $25 fine.

Baird said she has been in talks with the University of Kentucky to arrange for Rosing to do a public service announcement about the dangers of drinking, which Kylah Spring had suggested to the prosecutors when asked for sentencing ideas.

Was she hitting that girl with a baseball bat as she called her a negress?

    • rhywun

There could be actual assault in there somewhere but as far as the media are concerned the racial slur is the worst thing ever.

      • Sensei

Looks like she also started hitting the cop too. That’s likely the reason for the push on maximum for what she plead to.

  28. Pope Jimbo

Minnesoda Nice. It is great watching families do things together.

An 8-year-old girl came to her dad’s rescue while he was working at a Twin Cities liquor store and beat an armed robber with a baseball bat as her father won a fight for the weapon, according to police.

The pint-sized heroics late Saturday at Big Discount Liquors in Maplewood resulted in the arrest and a first-degree robbery charge being filed Monday against Conchobhar Joseph Morrell, 37, of St. Paul.

Video surveillance from inside the store showed the girl step in with an aluminum baseball bat and strike Morrell multiple times in the head as the two men tangled while the gun was on the floor. Morrell left the store with no money and no gun.

Let’s get DA Bragg in so he can jail dad and get that kid into child protective service ASAP.

      • Suthenboy

CPS? Bragg would charge the kid as an adult with felony assault and try to have her jailed…probably in a prison with tranny boys in it.

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV WT is an Overpriced, But Capable Work Truck

It’s $75k for the stripped work version. JFC. The only people buying this are going to be governments with green purchasing requirements.

And I think I get why GM did it. It’s the cheapest EV truck compared to competitors. Doesn’t matter that you could buy two ICE trucks for the price of one.

    • Suthenboy

      “…capable work truck.”

      No it isn’t.

      • Tundra

Tucker’s neighbor in Maine did a highly entertaining review of the Cybertruck and yes, it actually is very capable. The guy admitted that he wouldn’t buy one, but the towing and off road chops were surprisingly good. Pissed off the guys at the feed store, too! 😉

    • The Gunslinger

I bought my GMC WT more than 5 years ago for $5k. It still runs great.

Based on an ad running on Pandora, Ford is discounting the Lightning. What a surprise; costs more, does less.

I wondered how on earth Kamala thought she could propose a no taxes on tips policy and not get dragged.. I should have guessed that it would just end up blaming Trump for everything.

On Monday, the White House said that Biden backed the plan too, though White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre wouldn’t address why Biden and Harris didn’t push for it during their first three-and-a-half years in office.

”Obviously, it’s a new idea,” she said, but added later in response to criticism from Trump, ”Why didn’t they pass it during the last administration?”

The entire story is about how Harris might – just might – be rolling out some actual policies in the near future. Of course, the speculation was fueled entirely by statements that a spokesman made. Not anything Harris actually said herself.
