Monday Afternoon Miffed Links

Gah!

I was doing just fine. Had a great weekend – spent a fiar piece of Sunday sitting in the beer garden of my local, celebrating the 9th Kidneyversary with my buddy. He is doing great – a testament to modern medicine! Then I get up this morning and catch up on the news…ugh.

Wonder what I mean? Let us take a look, shall we?

  • The horror, the horror, the horror
  • Looks like Secretary Austin is now CinC – it sure ain’t Joe, and I doubt they let Kamala anywhere near the Armed Forces.
  • 25 years from a free place to just another part of the Chinese totalitarian state.
  • oops.

Music.

Hong Kong’s top court on Monday unanimously dismissed the final appeal of Jimmy Lai and six pro-democracy activists.

He could just Lai back and think of England, but that ship sailed in 1997.

    • Gdragon

The Bobby Knights of the Round Table?

  2. kinnath

I made it to Hong Kong once while they were still British.

    • kinnath

but that ship sailed in 1997.

Or rather, I was there just as one country, two systems was being put into place.

    • pistoffnick (370HSSV)

It was a glorious place. The food was fabulous.

Sadly, I will never go back now.

    • Evan from Evansville

I forget when they kinda-sorta changed to when they more recently really-really changed. My last time there was 2014 I think, and it was still super chill (at least on my end).

I love that place. Met some Germans who gave me a ticket to join ’em at the International Rugby 7s Championship. Young, college-aged guys. I was diligent to not visit China-China. Taiwan was fun, but we did just go for a weekend of fun. No cultural seeing/ learning attempted. We did go to a fancy restaurant on the top of Taiwan 101. I paid for my expensive, expensive meal on my card… which was repeatedly denied cuz Visa presumed it was stolen.

My friend/co-worker had to pick up my tab. It was $306. That. Was embarrassing. (I paid her back ASAP no prob, but. Big Friend Move, right there.) The food was properly exquisite.

25 years from a free place to just another part of the Chinese totalitarian state.

At least it should make Hong Kong feel better that if they’d stayed British….. they’d still be locking up people for “inciting riots against the state” and ignoring any concept of free speech.

    Progress!

Sorry you are miffed, Swiss. Better than being muffed I suppose.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

At least the Brits aren’t known for administering shocks to the genitalia as punishment in prison. On the other hand, food’s probably better.

  4. Shpip

KKB 1 was disconnected from the grid at around 2.10 p.m. and is in a safe condition, the statement continued. The reason was a malfunction in the level control in one of two steam generators in the non-nuclear section.

    Apparently it got the vapors.

    • SDF-7

If we start a pun thread out of these incidents, Swiss will tell us to scram.

      • Shpip

He likes for us to try and get a reaction out of him. It’s why he always has his ion us.

      • mindyourbusiness

You wouldn’t want him to have a meltdown, would you?

      • bacon-magic

The nucleus of this whole conversation is radioactive.

      • Chipping Pioneer

You’re all just fission for puns, now.

      • bacon-magic

Let’s not split atoms here, Swiss secretly loves these puns. It really divides his attention.

      • Gdragon

        This is a rad thread!

      • Bobarian LMD

If we can get up to 235 puns, Swiss will achieve chain reaction.

      • Tundra

Chernobyl to try, Bob but I doubt we’ll reach critical mass.

celebrating the 9th Kidneyversary with my buddy. He is doing great – a testament to modern medicine!

    🙂

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered an aircraft carrier to hasten its arrival in the Middle East and a guided-missile submarine to deploy in the region amid fears that Iran is planning a “significant” attack against Israel in the coming days.

    Interesting times.

Hong Kong’s top court on Monday unanimously dismissed the final appeal of Jimmy Lai and six pro-democracy activists.

Fuck. Jimmy Lai is a hero.

    • Timeloose

That was the year of Don’t trust China, China is Asshole. I wonder if that guy is in jail or worse?

      • SDF-7

I suspect China offered him a Tienanmen Square deal….

      • Bobarian LMD

Speaking of kidneys, he probably donated a couple of them himself.

  6. SDF-7

    …oops.

The reason was a malfunction in the level control in one of two steam generators in the non-nuclear section.

Due to the rapid shutdown, water vapor was occasionally visible above the non-nuclear part of the plant.

Assuming this is a PWR or variant — sounds like someone vented the secondary loop a bit. Down side — plant shut down and you have to answer annoying questions like “What’s the white cloud above the site drifting towards town?”. Up side — working as intended from the looks of things. As it should be when these things happen.

After all — no one wants melted Swiss bars or anything.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

If Trump were smart he’d find that guy, import him and use him on the campaign trail.

But alas, the dude is probably dead.

  7. Tonio

Happy Kidneyversery! That’s a truly wonderful thing you did.

    • Timeloose

Swiss you have my further admiration.

Yes. I just can’t believe it’s been nine years.

I went as Hong Kong Fooey for Halloween. It was the one year I had a store bought costume. By store bought I’m referring to the cheap plastic mask held on with a rubber band and a apron with the character on it.

That’s what I get for posting and not reading the whole thread first.

    • The Other Kevin

As part of my annual physical, I have a prostate screening blood test. Mine came back high this year, so they sent me to a urologist. Of course I got a bit worried. But the urologist told me there are a lot of false positives on that test, and about 10 things can make it high. Things like riding a bike, a long car trip, or sitting for a long time. Also, you should abstain for 3-5 days prior to the blood test. I was never told that. Anyway, he just had me take the test again, and it came back normal. Happy to be ok, but not real happy I have a bill for a visit to a specialist.

      • kinnath

Mine have been at the bottom end of the normal scale for as long as I have been taking them (10+ years).

      • Suthenboy

There are certain things I am not comfortable discussing. If I dont think about it or talk about it, it doesnt exist, right?
        See, I’m safe.

      • Shpip

It’s not often you can take an active hand in your own well-being.

      • The Other Kevin

Suthen, there is something to be said about that. For example, I haven’t brought myself to poop in a box and send it to a lab.

      • kinnath

Colonoscopy is a far more enjoyable experience.

    • Bobarian LMD

Researchers recommended climaxing 21 times per month because the literature suggested it lowered the risk of disease by one-third.

      Pikers.

At this rate, someone is going to have to cut off my head with a sword.

That was the only role Lambert was great at. He was perfect for the role. Seeing him in lots of other stuff made me realize he was run of the mill at best. Oh well. A one hit wonder. At least he didn’t get prostate cancer. He does however have terrible myopia. Just sayin’. Everything has a cost.

      • The Wrath of ZWAAAAAAKKKK!!!

But, was that first hand information?

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

That could be BS, but why take that chance?

  8. Suthenboy

It is no surprise the Pomies let HK slip back into totalitarian hands. They are too busy creating a totalitarian shithole at home to care.

    • Tonio

The treaty expired. Unfortunate, but not a casus belli like the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands.

      • Suthenboy

More of that quibbling over Queensbury rules while shanked in the prison yard. The leftists are fond of explaining things with ‘Fuck you, that’s why’. Works both ways.

      • UnCivilServant

The treaty was with the Empire, not the communists. The Brits could have given Hong Kong to Taiwan with as much or even more legitimacy, or kept it, as the other party of the treaty was gone.

  10. The Late P Brooks

    Worst VP candidate ever

Vance’s I know you are, but what am I? rebuttal came during a tour of the Sunday shows, in which he mounted some attacks of his own against the Democratic ticket—accusing Walz of having “lied about his [military] service for political gain” and—perhaps most notably—suggesting Harris is avoiding the press because she wants to hide her agenda from the public. “The Harris campaign, what are their policy views?” Vance asked Jonathan Karl on ABC News’ This Week Sunday. “The person who wants to be our president ought to sit down for some tough interviews,” the Ohio Republican added. “I’m willing to do it, and I wish she would, too.”

Vance did little during his media swing to shake off the “weird” label his opponents have leveled at him, especially as he struggled to defend Trump for dining with a white supremacist who has insulted his own wife, Usha Vance. He also insisted that he was merely engaging in a “thought experiment” when he suggested people with children should get more votes than those who do not. “I regret that the media and the Kamala Harris campaign has frankly distorted what I said,“ Vance told Karl.

He’s just a thin skinned weirdo crybaby. Not like America’s Dadbro.

    • The Other Kevin

I saw those clips. He’s impressive.

      • Tundra

He’s part of the PayPal Mafia, no?

Say what you will about those boys, they aren’t D.C. stupid.

    • Suthenboy

Erik Lutz. Or Lulz, take your pick.
The media today is beyond laughable with the hacks and their mendacity. It really is something to behold.

  11. The Late P Brooks

Still, the dig at Harris for her lack of unscripted appearances so far could prove potent. Though Harris has captured the momentum of the presidential race from Trump, she is not as well-defined as her opponent or the man she replaced on the top of the Democratic ticket. So far, that’s been part of her appeal, with the vice president running as a “change” candidate in what had previously been a rematch most voters didn’t want. Not holding court with the press is also likely part of her strategy, as interviews carry risks. But the more gaps remain in her policy platform, the more opportunities bad-faith actors like Vance will have to fill them in with distortions and lies, including baseless suggestions that Harris is “anti-family” and that Walz effectively supports “kidnapping” the children of parents who do not believe in gender-affirming care, as Vance claimed Sunday.

Going back and looking at what Democrats have actually said and advocated is dirty pool. Rancorous mudslinging should only be used against Republicans.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

“Bad faith actors”. What does that even mean? Is that just another way of saying “political opponent” or “critic”?

      • Suthenboy

Bad faith actor is a catch all term for ‘leftist’ and ‘democrat’.

      • Suthenboy

See what UCS says about the British and Hong Kong above. What Obama and Biden did regarding Iran and…well, the list is endless.
“Oops, would had no choice but to let the enemies of liberty win. Oh yeah, fuck you.”

    • R C Dean

“ Harris has captured the momentum of the presidential race from Trump”

Nonstop tongue baths from the media and picking a running mate, I suppose. From what I can tell, the polls are still mixed with probably a percent or two moving her direction nationwide. Which is meaningless. It’s the swing state polls that matter (as much as any poll does).

  12. The Late P Brooks

“Bad faith actors”. What does that even mean?

Not being a credulous obedient headnodder is un-American. We treat our politicians like gods. The Democrats, anyway.

  13. Tundra

    Tulsi strikes back!

Not really. But it’s always fun to check her out.

If you are a Democrat thinking ‘that’s what she gets for betraying us,’ please remember the Pendulum always swings back the other way. Eventually a non Democrat will take power and the precedent has now been set.

I am having to watch the new SpongeBob on Netflix with some children. I do not like it. Feels like a hostage situation.
    I am being detained!

    • UnCivilServant

Are you related to the children?

How woke is the show now that it’s on NetFlix?

      • R.J.

Not woke, so much as just total crap.
        1. Poorly written
        2. Really, really bad acting from the human characters. Are they brain damaged? My God…
        3. Back to poorly written. It’s not even timed properly. And has awful musical numbers. So, so bad.

      • UnCivilServant

        Human characters?

I haven’t seen much of the show, but I thought it was all mutant sea creatures.

    • Tundra

Dude, this is how you end up on a list. Get out of the neighbor’s house!

      • Suthenboy

Why bother? We are all on more than one list these days.

      • Tundra

Yeah, but that list will get you killed in prison.

      • R.J.

    Heinous

Former President Donald Trump reportedly has used a slur often targeted at women to describe Vice President Kamala Harris during at least two private conversations. His campaign denies it.

The New York Times cited two people who, on different occasions, heard Trump call Harris a “b——.” The people were granted anonymity to describe private discussions.

Okay, no need to fact check any of that.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

She is a bitch…kept people in jail past their sentences for free labor…that’s a bitch any way you cut it.

      • The Hyperbole

She may well be a bitch but she didn’t do that. Yes, her office fought the Fed’s when they tried to make California release prisoners early, and there was the Fire-fighter thing which was argued once by some underlings and quickly nixed. I may be wrong and falling for Left-wing BS (It’s been a while since I deep dived into this) but I don’t believe one person spent a single day longer in jail than they should have because of Mrs. Harris’s actions.

      • Evan from Evansville

Then at best, she actively fought to keep people *IN* prison. That’s arguably far worse.. It’s certainly ‘uglier.’ ‘Nastier.’

Cuntier. It’s awful cunty of her, to purposefully, cuntishly, do that. What a cunt. Seriously, fuck. How nasty of a cunt can you be AND be ‘likable’ enough to be Team Blue’s “BEST” Chance?! And for ~50% of the county more than happy to either blindly go along with it all, or worse, to actively drive it forward. Yikes. I detest ‘my’ generation.

    • SandMan

    • OBJ FRANKELSON

Well up thread is a handy way to get that life back. I’d advise waiting, putting a little time between that and watching children’s TV will reduce people’s concerns.

  20. Grumbletarian

Good story today, Animal. I’m calling it now: hacker girl is a plant of the King’s. Way too easy how she disabled the guards without hurting them.

    • OBJ FRANKELSON

I would think 300 Blackout or 9×39 (if you are a weirdo) is a better choice for this sort of application.

      • R C Dean

My thought exactly on the Blackout, OBJ. You do give up range with that ammo, though.

      • OBJ FRANKELSON

If you are looking for range, might as well get a Winchester 70 and a good E & E plan.

    • Suthenboy

yes, there is and thus I never saw the need for 300 BO. Actually there are plenty of pistol rounds that would do the job quite nicely.
OTOH, I never had specific use for a sub-sonic round so it was never an area of interest for me.

      • EvilSheldon

The one use case that I can see for 300BO is…let me see how to best phrase this…you’re at home or some other place you’re within your rights to be, and maybe the civil situation is a little dicier than normal. You might have to defend your person or property, but you also want to minimize the chance of attracting a crowd, especially a hostile crowd.

A silenced 300BO carbine loaded with subsonic hollowpoints is the ideal tool for this kind of deal, especially if combined with NODs. You could make do with a silenced pistol caliber carbine as well, but the 300BO has much better terminal ballistics than any pistol cartridge, and also retains the ability to switch out to supers if things really get out of hand.

    • EvilSheldon

The can on a big-bore rifle isn’t to eliminate the report, so much as it is to obscure the location of the shooter. There are other side benefits.

300 Blackout is a 200-yard cartridge, at a maximum, with subsonic ammo. Even with supersonic ammo the external ballistics are terrible. Supersonic .308, even in an 18″ barrel, is good out to 800 yards or so before things get really dicey. There’s just no replacement for lots of muzzle velocity.

My main concern would be with how much the zero shifts when un-threading and re-threading the barrel. I figure that wherever I’m supposed to be sneaking that rifle into, it’s not gonna be a place where I can re-zero…

Also, $13k is a little rich for Leupold optics.

  21. Trials and Trippelations

Made it to Waco from NC last night. It was not a pleasant move, but it’s over. And as my wife has been saying throughout the whole process (prepping the NC house for the sale, sale process, loading the moving truck in a tropical depression) “we’re not doing this again!”

Kids are still excited about being in a new place. I am certain this was the right move and look forward to all benefits of moving here shaking out for the kids

Closing and move in is tomorrow. I started orientation today via zoom. On the road I learned tomorrow is in person orientation. I don’t quite have the proper business casual attire for that more like casual golf 😬 Hopefully the leader is understanding. My nurse manager was, but she’s not involved in the first week orientation

    • Tundra

      Congrats!

What chased you out of NC? My brother’s company has offices there and he would like to get out of Minne.

And yes, moving cross-country is a motherfucker.

      • Trials and Trippelations

Much of it was where I lived (Durham). Out of control progressivism, and everyone is trying to outdo each other for the proper prog creds. It’s not a good place to raise kids
There is also a strong criminal element.

The other aspect is I am a nurse, and none of the other HC systems in NC were attractive.

Since I’ve been living in Durham for 8 years I can’t seperate that culture from the state at large as far as long term trends go.

      • Ted S.

There is also a strong criminal element.

Starting in the DA’s office to boot.

      • slumbrew

My brother’s out in Apex and it doesn’t seem so proggie, albeit in my limited exposure.

By comparison to Minne it’ll be be deepest red, Tundra. But anywhere near Raleigh Durham will be purplish, AFAICT.

        Thanks, boys.

      • Trials and Trippelations

@Ted S a classic Durham tale. There was a councilwoman that was caught taking bribes. Her first response was “what am I not supposed to help someone that gives me money”
When that didn’t work she switched to y’all are racist

      • Trials and Trippelations

Oops messed up my response to Ted. I got the Nifong reference

      • Trials and Trippelations

@Tundra it’s been over 10 years since I lived in MSP, so a little rusty. Wasn’t Edina known or still known for BMW liberals? Cary, Apex, and parts of Raleigh can be that way

We had considered areas around Charlotte including as far away from Charlotte as kananpolis, which can be more reasonable, but the HC system in Charlotte is not very good for nurses

      • Tundra

        @T&T

Edina is eternal lol. A lot of the Denver metro is the exact same!

One of their offices is in Fort Mill, SC. Know it?
