Saturday evening links

Look, there aren’t any limbs on the ground for a change.

So my neighbors agreed to host a large wedding in their yard. They’ve been at it for weeks. And the bride asked if the wedding pictures could be taken under my willow tree. I was more than happy to oblige.

Links, anyone?

Oh look, there’s a cherry on top.

That’s right motherfucker, you’re next.

Yeah, I could see how a weekend with Diddy when you’re 15 could fuck your head up a bit.

Or a grown ass man in his 30s.

Climate migrants are the worst kind of migrants.

This is an interesting read and rings very true for me. Even when you have retirement plans, there is still a transition period where you do a lot of internal evaluation, and it can be difficult.

Oh look, an agent of change.

Okay, that’s it for me. I have to set up a small fireworks show for the reception. Peace out, Glibbies!

Thanks for fucking me again, WordPress.

To be fair, the survey says you’re a paleolibertarian bitch.

  2. juris imprudent

He had no friends or hobbies…

Boo fucking hoo. Who’s goddam fault was that – the world? Do the rest of us owe him something?

It’s Michele Michael Obama, from a fake trailer.

    • Spudalicious

That’s LeBron James. And if you don’t know who that is, I can’t help you.

      • UnCivilServant

It’s a name associated with sportsball. what he gets up to in his spare time isn’t of much difference to me.

      • juris imprudent

What is the fucking context – this was a bet he made? Or are we kink-shaming around here now?

      • Brochettaward

I think anyone who partied with Diddy is now up for ridicule.

      • Brochettaward

Also, one of the things Lebron fans always trumpet about him is that he’s never had any major scandals.

The sports media is loath to connect him to something like this because they fawn over the guy. Now we know he was almost certainly engaging in untold levels of debauchery on the down low. And come on…no one in the media knew?

This shit is like the Epstein stuff. Or the Weinstein stuff. It was all an open secret and now all these assholes in power want to pretend they are shocked and horrified by the allegations.

  4. The Late P Brooks

If she wins in November, Vice President Kamala Harris may face a hostile, Republican-controlled Senate in no mood to confirm the senior Cabinet officials sheโ€™ll need to run her administration.

    What goes around comes around.

    • Gustave Lytton

I bet fed judges will be falling over themselves to invalidate all of her cabinet appointees directives because they weren’t correctly approved. Just like last time.

  5. Aloysious

Oh good, you are okay. I thought for a minute that you might be over in Israel shooting potatoes at Hezbollah out of potato cannon.

… and now I’m picturing Miss Lebron James under your tree in a wedding dress. I need drinks. Many drinks.

        Not with that attitude.

Her aides are also looking at the option of initially retaining some current officials so that she’d have more time to make staffing decisions. With only a few months to build a campaign after abruptly replacing President Joe Biden at the top of the ticket, Harris has had little time to focus on the makeup of a new administration, the people familiar with the planning said.

That’s so precious. As if anybody is seriously pretending she would be an independent actor.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Don’t worry, Mrs. Whorris, it will all be over in the Blinken of an eye.

If it hasnโ€™t been mentioned before:
This month, Earth will grab itself a second moon in the form of the tiny asteroid 2024 PT5.

Unlike the moon, Earth’s primary companion which has accompanied our planet for around 4 billion years, this “new mini-moon” will stick around for just two months before it heads back to its home in an asteroid belt trailing our planet and orbiting the sun.

  21. Evan from Evansville

We’re social primates. I prefer knowing the social environs around me. Helps to know what many others are thinking ’bout.

I know of LeBron James’ ability and (most?) of his teams. I remember him first coming up and his first-round Hall of Fame induction to-come. I’m not an NBA-guy, tho I am a (MLB) Chicago Cubs fan. <– Closest to religion I come to.
Of pointless media, I derive value from some, but not all. It's still helpful to know *about* what other social primates like. Helps Read the Room; catch others' influences and personality; and most importantly, creates opportunities for contemporary set-ups and punchlines. Knowledge fuels humor. Even when 'out of touch' is the joke, it helps to know what is 'inside' the audience's wheelhouse. Better juxtaposition.

I'm a severely private introvert, as an individual. In public, I play a (semi) different character to all strangers I meet, depending on the circumstances. Dad's Aspergers' passed a bit onto me, and A LOT onto middle-nephew. Regardless, knowing the basics of sports/music is exceptionally helpful finding slices of something shared to enter conversation, or just insert a comment. I'm happier having worked in high school-beyond to rectify my inability to do such before.

This is true of prowling at a bar AND talking to a source for a story. (And every other human interaction.) Getting an 'In' opens social doors. Helps establish trust. Makes folk more comfortable and likely to get into a conversation (or to help or listen). Hopefully you can get a good quote out of it before deadline.

What is your favorite edition of D&D?

      • UnCivilServant

        3.5

They’d fixed the mechanical problems with 2nd and AD&D, but hadn’t yet made the bid for the wider audience.

      • cavalier973

        Did you ever play Pathfinder?

      • UnCivilServant

Yes, but you asked about D&D specifically.

      • cavalier973

        Did you houserule 3.5?

      • UnCivilServant

I don’t remember, that was years ago.

I could probably tell you more about the game stories than the game mechanics, unless there was something particularly absurd.

      • Evan from Evansville

I never touched D&D. I read GURPS, Werewolf: The Apocalypse, and (bits of) Vampire: The Masquerade. These were my teenage expansion to my Tolkien+ fantasy lore as a lad. I only ‘played’ spoken, story-driven play, without too much regard for ‘rules.’ The characters we created were the focus.

Lothar (Holstein) was usually my character’s name.

      • kinnath

AD&D is the only version I played and that was approaching 40 years ago.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

        White Box or GTFO!

(I grew up playing AD&D that was VERY houseruled. But the older I get, the simpler I like things like this.)

      • cavalier973

If you like the White Box, check out โ€œDelving Deeperโ€.

Itโ€™s available for download free of charge. There is also a print on demand book available for sale.

It is adheres to the original rules a little better than Swords & Wizardry

There is also, available free of charge, rules based on Chainmail called โ€œThe Compleat Chainmail Combat Systemโ€, which was supposed to be the rules for combat (even though Gygax himself just used the alternate combat system).

  22. cavalier973

    Awwwโ€ฆ

    Boo! On the second moon!

Unfortunately, during its occupation around Earth, 2024 PT5 won’t be visible to the vast majority of skywatchers.

“The object is too small and dim for typical amateur telescopes and binoculars. However, the object is well within the brightness range of typical telescopes used by professional astronomers,” Marcos said. “A telescope with a diameter of at least 30 inches plus a CCD or CMOS detector are needed to observe this object, a 30 inches telescope and a human eye behind it will not be enough.”

    • UnCivilServant

I can’t call it a moon, it’s smaller than my house.

      • Chipping Pioneer

      • UnCivilServant

      • Ted S.

Don’t ask for a moon; you still have the stars.

Add in the decline of civic institutions where men used to congregate โ€” think of the Elks or the Shriners โ€” and older menโ€™s reduced ability to participate in athletic activities, and the result is a lack of stimulation and the loss of a sense of belonging.

Itโ€™s because they have to include those icky girls, now, who come in, change everything that was comfortable, and are constantly having the male members rearrange the furniture.

Iโ€™ve been listening to Moby Dick, by Melville, through LibriVox, and, huh.

Actual quote: โ€œ Squeeze! Squeeze! Squeeze! all the morning long; I squeezed that sperm till I myself almost melted into it; I squeezed that sperm till a strange sort of insanity came over me, and I found myself unwittingly squeezing my co-labourers’ hands in it, mistaking their hands for the gentle globules. Such an abounding, affectionate, friendly, loving feeling did this avocation beget; that at last I was continually squeezing their hands, and looking up into their eyes sentimentally, as much as to say,โ€”Oh! my dear fellow beings, why should we longer cherish any social acerbities, or know the slightest ill humour or envy! Come; let us squeeze hands all round; nay, let us all squeeze ourselves into each other; let us squeeze ourselves universally into the very milk and sperm of kindness.โ€

Did Herman Melville attend Sean Combsโ€™s parties?

    • cavalier973

      • UnCivilServant

No, it was not on the curriculum when I was in school, and it’s not nearly explicit enough for modern school.

I did read it in high school, but never recall that sequence until some strange person fixates on it online.

      • cavalier973

I just heard this part today, and thought it hilarious.

Back in the day, people thought that the glutinous mass in the whaleโ€™s head was its โ€œessenceโ€.

A good chunk of the book is describing whale biology.

Something I learned is that there is a species of whale called the right whale. He kept using that term, and I wondered if he meant a humpback or possibly a blue whale, but discovered that there are right whales.

      • R.J.

        โ€œLet the Right Whale In.โ€

      • UnCivilServant

there is a species of whale called the right whale.

Yeah, that’s an unfortunately confusingly named set of species.

      • SarumanTheGreat

They were called ‘right’ whales because they were so full of blubber they would generally stay afloat after death, whereas other whales species (with lower percentages of blubber) tended to sink upon death. So they were the preferred whale to hunt until the invention of explosive harpoons and other gear that would quickly kill and secure whales before they sank.

    • cavalier973

Iโ€™m joking, of course. Kids only read the Cliff Notes.

Here is a 20 minute video of the biology of sperm whales:
      https://youtu.be/Hve8_iSDD-o?si=OEdZeCPBvszj5bAN

I had the mistaken idea that all whales sound like humpback whales, but sperm whales make an extremely loud clicking noise.

      • UnCivilServant

I couldn’t afforc cliff’s notes for any book.

I read the whole thing. I liked the treatises on whaling.

      • cavalier973

Fascinating stuff. The best (and worst) parts are the descriptions of killing the whale and harvesting its body parts.

The character Stubbs provides comic relief in the form of unguarded commentary.

Melville, through Ishmael, demonstrates a worshipful admiration of sperm whales, even as he is killing them.

      • pistoffnick (370HSSV)

        Thanks, cav!

        Good informative video.

      • MikeS

You’re right. He’s never right about anything. I’ll get it loaded on my Kindle and give it a go.

      • The Hyperbole

Next you should not read Gravity’s Rainbow.

  27. cavalier973

    Returning to the D&D question:
I have a great preference for so-called โ€œBasicโ€ D&D (there are three versions of โ€œBasicโ€).
The most popular set of โ€œold schoolโ€ rules right now is called โ€œOld School Essentialsโ€, and is almost exactly the same as the rules written by Tom Moldvay and published in 1981z

The company that produces Old School Essentials is publishing a variation of these rules, along with an extremely rich campaign setting called Dolmenwood. It is based heavily on English folklore.

I have probably mentioned it previously.

Here is a video by the DM of the most criminally underwatched rpg live play on the internet, discussing Dolmenwood:

    https://youtu.be/hL_YAarvB5U?si=gLjz0uea4Odd4ecT

    • UnCivilServant

Why would you watch other people play an RPG?

      • cavalier973

If you like D&D, and can find the right group, it is highly entertaining.

3d6, Down the Line is a group of friends that have been playing together for some time, and so there is a camaraderie there.

What makes it work better than, say, Critical Role, is that these guys just play the game. The viewer does not have to sit through ten minutes of backstory on each character.

Itโ€™s better than watching the new Star Wars movies.

They have a Discord Server, as well as the YouTube channel.

      • UnCivilServant

I’d rather just get together a group and play. I had a game going until earlier this year when Lacky dropped out and we were down to three.

      • cavalier973

        Are you the DM?

      • Evan from Evansville

I like watching Warcraft battles online, competition games played for large amounts of money and to a large audience. The players were filmed while seated with well-done commentary going on in the stream.

Ya can learn strats or see how they work; have fun background noise; or actually pay attention to a game with the winner getting $1000k+ on the line. *shrug*

      • UnCivilServant

        I was.

Sometimes it’s the only way to get people to join is to take on the heavy lifting.

      • cavalier973

Itโ€™s kind of like watching improv, I guess. Watching how the players interact with the situation is interesting to me.

I donโ€™t often get the chance to play, myself, and when I do, Iโ€™ve got to be the DM, which is not my preference.

      • cavalier973

I will also watch people play poker, occasionally, whenever I have the opportunity.

Some people even like to watch beefy me run back and forth, chasing a leathern ball, over and over and over again. Back, and forth. Back, and forth.

And they can come away from such viewing with a changed emotional state.

      • cavalier973

        โ€œBeefy menโ€, not โ€œbeefy meโ€.

        Iโ€™m more of a โ€œpiggy meโ€.

So after getting through last night’s very windy hurricane remnants unscathed, today we’ve had just light rain. So naturally, about 2 1/2 hours ago our power went out. ๐Ÿ™„ (Heard a transformer blow nearby.) Finally fired up our small generator for the fridge and the router, but I have limited time on my laptop until I’ll have to add it to the sole power strip for a recharge.

Pulled up the local power company’s online outage map, and it looks as if most of the county is down. I suspect we’ll be near the end of the line.

Good point. I assume it was all the same as many/most Hollywood parties. Lots of drugs, sex and craziness. I doubt anyone was forced. Duh, young folk were given booze and drugs, and I’m sure many were taken advantage. Much like the Kevin Spacey teen, I don’t think it was really unconsensual at all. Immoral? Quite possibly.
(I wasn’t a victim when it happened to me. Switch the sexes or add pregnancy and BOOM, different story.)

Were children involved? I don’t know. If there were, then (perhaps) they don’t release even family names, but it’d be more openly said, with numbers to back. That there aren’t makes me lean towards my hypothesis, with what I know now. Which ain’t much, cuz I haven’t read any real specifics other than ones of White Parties with celebs obviously into it all. Lots of swing parties, and I’m sure some feelings were hurt afterwards, but folk who all went there to Party.

    • R C Dean

From the public accounts and photos of his parties it seems pretty clear that Diddy did, indeed, diddy. The interesting question is who is in his blackmail files, and how will they be handled. I mean, given who was at these blowout sex parties, thereโ€™s really very little question that people did all kinds of questionable shit.

      • Gustave Lytton

Just like Clinton went to Pedo island 50 times

      • Evan from Evansville

I am not surprised the NYC+ sexy orgy shenanigans flouting COVID shutdowns haven’t gotten more coverage and induced more vitriol.
It remains ‘hidden,’ and that doesn’t surprise me/us either.

I think someone earlier nailed it: These parties are the cost of Getting In. Everyone already In now has dirt on ya. Welcome a-fuckin’-board.

      • rhywun

People will make a big deal out of this if and only if the media tell them to make a big deal out of it.

        Same as ever.

  30. R.J.

Any word from Derpy or Brett?

    • UnCivilServant

Derpy got power back. I haven’t seen word from Brett.

    • Aloysious

Or the Bro. He lives in or around Tampa, I believe.

      • R.J.

I thought Bro was around MN, for some reason.

      • Brochettaward

When hurricanes come, The Bro goes Firstin’.

      • Aloysious

        Hey, Bro.

        That’s what I was hoping.

      • R.J.

        We all hope for that.

    • Spudalicious

      Brett is all good.

      • slumbrew

He and his might be safe but I seriously question if Brett is “all good”

      • Spudalicious

        Fair.

  31. Chipping Pioneer

I was just over at TOS, where I haven’t been in years and … oh my.

    • UnCivilServant

      Can you be more specific?

    • R.J.

Were you following me around? I went over there today too.

“Trump’s and Vance’s Attacks on Haitian Immigrants Reveal a Complete Lack of Decency”

…And they got hammered in the comments. That was my lunch break. After that I went back to lacking up the house.

      • Aloysious

        lacking up the house

        kinky

      • R.J.

        Packing! Packing! AAAAAAAHHH!

I need a decent keyboard. And new fingers.

      • rhywun

That is exactly the take I would have expected from them.

        Plus รงa change….

      • Nephilium

        rhywun:

I’ve been enjoying the local rag’s take on JD Vance, which they have a whole section for: “JD Vance in the news”. So not only do you get the original story about what he said, you get a reaction piece, and then a follow up with a summary of how wrong he is.

    • Nephilium

      Takei started writing for them?

  32. Gustave Lytton

Lebron looks like something from Black Mirror.

  33. Gustave Lytton

Civil War is the Turner Diaries for the Hollywood hacks.

  34. Brochettaward

The Diddy stuff matters because he had politicians, powerful people “partying” with him. Not just fucked up celebrities. And I’d put money that it was part of a three letter agency honeypot like Epstein was for Mossad and probably the CIA.

So, you have to ask yourself why they’re going after him and the scum in NYC politics right now.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Different group is now running shit upstairs.

      • R.J.

Same group, same shit. The NY mayor and Puff Diddly got uppity and had to be put down. Diddly will have an impressive dead man’s switch, so we shall see what unravels. The scummy back-office of the dems can’t keep this shit show together much longer.

      • Ted S.

Why do you think he’ll have any more impressive a switch than Epstein did?

    • Evan from Evansville

Add my sentiments to RJs’. Boom.

Boom to ZWAK, as well. Different group always = (Different) Powers That Be. They can get away with more shit, so they try and test and fall in love and sentiment and lust and…. Same as old. Caligula didn’t start overnight. Now, the constant influx of ‘Edgier’ stimuli, combined with ‘One-Upsmanship,’ the craziness of it all is amplified in speed and availability. Eventually… well. HOW it falls apart is the only real question. And if it’ll happen in our lifetimes.

      • Gustave Lytton

Rich and powerful have almost always been degenerates.

      • Evan from Evansville

Yes. The speed and availability has changed. A side effect of the most prosperous — and peaceful — time in human history.

More rich people? More degenerates. More to share with. And from. Much more.

      • Chafed

Now I want to be rich and powerful.

      • Ted S.

        You can still be degenerate.

  35. UnCivilServant

Today I learned – The Cook County Clerk in Blues Brothers was played by Steven Spielberg.

    • Evan from Evansville

Today I admit: I’ve still never seen that film.

      • UnCivilServant

It’s older than both of us.

      • R.J.

Currently it is not on free streaming. Otherwise I’d drop you a link.

      • UnCivilServant

*either. I”m sure if you summed our ages together it’d be more than the age of the film.

      • Evan from Evansville

Either you’re correct, or both of us are wrong.

      • UnCivilServant

I bought it on DVD from Blockbuster while I was in Oregon. I just got around to getting those purchases out of the car.

    • UnCivilServant

Watching Blues Brothers and 2000 back to back I’ve noted that the plot of the sequel is less coherent in terms of character and plot, but more dense in terms of musical numbers.

      • R.J.

Odd. Very much like the original Beetlejuice and the new one. I do not recommend the new one.

      • Chafed

I know the lure of a sequel is too strong for the studios. Still, I wish they would leave certain movies alone.

      • R.J.

Get ready for “Fear and Loathing… IN SPACE!” the sequel nobody wanted.

      • UnCivilServant

Eh, I’ll still watch both Blues Brothers movies with only my typical amount of snark.

      • Nephilium

FFS, they’re remaking Clue. A nearly perfect movie that needs no changes. I mean, are you going to improve it’s fidelity to the board game?

      • slumbrew

What, you’re not looking forward to the Happy Gilmore sequel?

(The original is a guilty pleasure. “I eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast!”)

      • R.J.

Gotta add some equity in there! And all the main characters of the same sex have to make out. Because that’s cool to the kids.

      • Brochettaward

Happy Gilmore is legitimately funny so I don’t see why it’s a guilty pleasure. I don’t let the last 20 years of Adam Sandler’s career ruin the good he did in the 90’s.

Big Daddy and Happy Gilmore are legitimately good comedies with a bit of heart to them to make up for the childish nature of the humor.

      • Ted S.

        Pride of the Yankees II.

      • Ted S.

On the other hand, Oliver’s Story was a real sequel someone decided to greenlight.

  36. Sean

Hey Glibs! Hope y’all have a great Sunday!

    Re: Sequels…they’re talking about a Goonies 2. Noooooooo! ๐Ÿ˜ต๐Ÿ˜ต

    • The Hyperbole

Great Sunday’s don’t exist for Browns Fans.

RE: Sequels(and remakes) If you don’t want to see a sequel or remake don’t watch it. and don’t give me the “They ruined the original BS’ the orginal is still exactly the same.

Also why is “:” the shift option for “;”, whom the fuck ever uses “;”

      • Ted S.

It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest I go to than I have ever known.

I thought the opening line used semicolons to demarcate a whole paragraph’s worth of contrasts, but checking says that Dickens used commas.

    • Gender Traitor

Good morning Sean, Teh Hype, and Ted’S.!

Power is still out at our place in SW OH despite being far from the hot hurricane action. We’ll fire up the generator after TT wakes up. In the meantime, I’m trying to decide where to drive for some morning caffeine – McDonald’s, Panera, or a little further to Tim Hortons.

      • robodruid

I would go to somewhere that has power.
