Wednesday Afternoon SugarLinks – For hate’s sake I spit my last breath at thee

What can I do that would be worse than this? I mean, it’s already of a satire of itself, the cringe dialed up to 11 and the damn thing has at least a dozen outright fucking lies. We already know she’s an abusive drunk that can barely keep staffers around that were hand-picked from a horde of lickspittle ideologues with fresh degrees in Fist-Fuck Studies. President Franzia will be an absolute disaster, and we are going to be stuck with her for eight years because Trump’s ego has destroyed everyone that doesn’t suck his asshole.

I’m not even sure I am a libertarian any longer. People, en masse, are just too stupid to have freedom. If they want to keep things as they are, they deserve what they get.

Damn. I don’t think anyone under the age of 30 can identify what those posts were for.

    • SDF-7

Maybe — the current crop of kids may have paid attention playing Fallout 4….

    • Gustave Lytton

Probably 50. The remaining few switched to low power fm the last years.

      • Nephilium

        Hey! I’m under 50!

They were a pretty common thing shown in the old reruns of shows that aired after the game shows and were seen by any kid staying home from school sick.

    • Homple

It would be hard for youngsters to guess how they were associated with sin.

It’s worth playing to the end of the song.

    • rhywun

I’m over 50 and I had no idea what that was.

The last drive-in I remember visiting was some time in the late 70s.

    • NoDakMat

There is an active drive-in movie theater about 30 miles from me.

They aren’t used for their original purpose anymore, but most of the speaker posts are still intact. They are useful now as parking guides.

  2. The Other Kevin

I only got halfway through that Kammy video. Couldn’t do it. Their glossed-over story of Joe stepping out of the race was a little different than I remember it.

    • Tonio

It’s hilarious. So dark it could have been written by SugarFree himself.

      • Nephilium

As terrible as it is, I actually find it frightening rather than funny. The campaign thinks this is a good look for them, and the part that terrifies me is that it’s just fluffy enough with references to a sitcom that likely is nostalgia bait to those younger than me, that it may work.

The entire campaign is like the cotton candy from Killer Klowns. Light, airy, no substance, but it will stick to anything and destroy it.

      • Tonio

        OMG, it’s actually serious.

        Republicans for Harris. LOL

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Repubs for Whorris, meanwhile Donkeys are losing Labor, Muslims, more and more POC’s, and name brand politicians.

But only one gets mentioned. Funny that.

      • EvilSheldon

Government by the same people who have made the modern workplace such a soul-killing hellscape?

    • Drake

It took a while to realize it’s not satire.

    • DEG

      I watched the whole thing.

I was wondering if it was subtle satire or serious.

      Sadly, serious I think.

    • rhywun

I only got halfway through that Kammy video.

Same. I bailed at “She’s got brains! And Tim Walz!”

      • Nephilium

The version I saw had “She’s Got Brains, and Balls, and Tim Walz”.

Which… well… the implications of that would be that those are all of either equal value, or Kammie having balls is worth more than having a Walz.

      • Sean

I had the testicular fortitude to watch the whole thing, but now I just want to lay down on the train tracks.

        🙁

Speaking of cringe… She’s like if Utne Reader somehow came to life.

Is it just me or does Greta look almost normal in that video?

    • rhywun

She’s laying it on a little too thick IMHO.

  8. The Other Kevin

Does the American left still love Greta? Because they sure as hell love big corporations (as long as they donate to Dems and have their tentacles in the government), and they sure as hell love the US sticking its nose in every other country’s business.

    • rhywun

The radical left probably does. She’s rolled all their causes into one package.

    • Bobarian LMD

      She is a useful tool.

    • Urthona

No. Like half of them were turned off by the fact that she supports terrorism.

The other half knows to be quiet.

    • Pope Jimbo

I’m hoping that somehow Mexico gets in a jam and Greta shows up wearing a sombrero to signal her solidarity.

After years of being lectured on how any gringo wearing a sombrero is totes cultural appropriation, we could laugh as no a peep would be said.

I’m hoping that in 20 years lives and careers will be destroyed as old pics of people wearing the Palistinian do-rags show up. Same as how blackface pics fuck people over now.

  9. kinnath

I ain’t watching the kamala video

The dems are controlled by young nitwits that think the world can be run by holding hands and singing kumbaya when in reality those same nitwits are controlled by big-money grifters that are robbing the treasury.

    • B.P.

“A new CBS News poll found that 72% of Kamala Harris voters say personal qualities are very important in their vote, versus 39% of Donald Trump voters.”

      [CBS link omitted]

Harris isn’t even pretending to have a platform, and it seems to be working for her. We’re back to the have-a-beer-with metric for picking a chief executive.

    Man, I miss the drive-in.

    At The Drive In

    • Fourscore

I miss the budget drive-ins that had the speakers in the front by the screen. If you parked further than the 4th row the audio was a little out of sync with the action.

      • Bobarian LMD

The last one I went to had a radio transmitter so you listened on your car’s sound system.

Did not work very well. Distortion. I think it was the 2nd Bourne movie, in all its shaky cam glory so you couldn’t see what was going on either. They closed at the end of that summer.

      • Winded

Not surprisingly there’s still a drive in in Las Vegas (5 screens even.) My nearest (NW Wisconsin) is weekends only and about 50 miles away but they do have several theme nights each year (70s night, 80s night, etc.)

    • EvilSheldon

In-CASINO-Out is one of my top-10 all-time rock albums.

It’s amazing. IIRC it was recorded live as well.

One of the many things I love about The Mars Volta is that they introduced me to At the Drive In.

    • SugarFree

So much. I had one in my hometown that lasted until 2004. The owner died and his dipshit kids sold off the land. It also had killer food. People would come in just to get the food and then leave.

      • Nephilium

We’ve got one still going. They were open during the plague years, and did quite well during them.

I’m spending the next few days worrying about my little tenement on wheels two miles up the road, while I hole up in a hotel. So, fun times.

Huzzah! We just got upgraded from a TS watch to a TS warning. In the motherfucking Smoky Mountains

      • Bobarian LMD

Flash floods are nothing to fuck with up there, though.

      • Shpip

Yeah, you’re in the zone. You might want to scout around the hotel, or ask the owners where the water usually runs during a heavy rainfall — so you can keep your car away from any low areas.

      • KK, Plump & Unfiltered

Yeah I may need to move the car, but it will probably just be large puddles since the hotel is high on a hill.

  16. Mojeaux

My credit card company randomly decided to convert my branded cc to a different one and the number changed, too. I JUST got all my services put on the card a few months ago and NOW I have to completely change them all AGAIN.

My bank did that when they merged with another bank. Fuckers.

From afternoon post. I highly recommend “Moon” and Duncan Jones’ (David Bowie’s kid) sophomore project “Source Code”.

Also, haven’t read the books, but the movie for “John Dies At the End” is awesome.

    Reposting for afternoon crowd:

Milei at the UN. Boy spitting fire again.

Link with his speech with English voiceover: https://webtv.un.org/en/asset/k1b/k1bgfuqsqs

    https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/bastiat-in-turtle-bay-mr-milei-goes-to-the-u-n/?utm_source=recirc-desktop&utm_medium=homepage&utm_campaign=right-rail&utm_content=corner&utm_term=fourth

Now Milei has come to the U.N., an institution for which an insulting enough adjective has yet to be devised.

    ….

What other world leader would mention Frédéric Bastiat, the great 19th century French economist and libertarian? What other world leader mentioning Bastiat, would have actually read him?

    • KK, Plump & Unfiltered

I saw an voiceover version of his WEF speech that was done in his own tone of voice by AI. I can’t listen to that chick translator talk over him!

      • LCDR_Fish

        link or just twitter?

I think the NRO link has a direct link to the transcript too – always wonder about translation stuff in some contexts.

“Harris isn’t even pretending to have a platform…”

I just heard Mark Cuban explain that she is very specific in spelling out her platform and is extra sensibly sensible and she will lead us all to the end of the rainbow. His interviewer said ‘…and she is NOT Trump…’ without elaboration.

    • EvilSheldon

I cannot believe that Mark Cuban was once taken seriously as a businessman or a ‘libertarian’.

I mean, if he were grubbing around for a Fed bailout, that would at least make sense, but no, everything about him indicates a true believer…

      • Tundra

He’s probably been to a binch of Diddy’s parties.

      • creech

True believer? I saw the interview and immediately thought “what grift is Cuban expecting from Harris?”

      • R.J.

I know. Who got to that guy? Seriously he is a different person from a decade ago.

    • Suthenboy

      Linked to?
Sodium fluoride in small doses is wildly effective at preventing dental problems, which in my opinion is one of the major causes of death, and very likely fluoride water is completely harmless.

Floride ions displace Chloride in your enamel. The Chloride in your enamel is acid soluble. The Fluoride replacement equivalent is not.
The bugs that live in your mouth dissolve your teeth with acidic waste. Cavities in your teeth increase your exposure to those bugs. The bugs also, after being swallowed, work their way into your circulatory system and reside in blockages and likely cause blockages and arteriosclerosis.
Ask any dentist: Brush your teeth and drink fluoridated water. You will live longer. A lot longer and generally with better health.

      • Fourscore

Fluoride free for the last 32 years. Gravity is taking it’s toll though.

      • creech

I remember when the Birchers decided fluoridation was a commie plot to steal our precious bodily fluids.

    • Urthona

I think at one time it mattered but nowadays everyone gets sufficient fluoride.

Then again, I live in a well-off suburb so I might not have a firm grasp of the rest of the US.

      • Suthenboy

Between fluoride treatments, fluoride in toothpaste, washes etc you are probably right.
Once once upon a time it was not the way. Fluoridating water did make an immediate and very marked reduction in dental problems and increases in health – a measurable increase in life expectancy over time. It may not be necessary now, I am just stuck in the past.

      • Sensei

        One way to actually check.

NJ is like the only state where something like 90% of the drinking water is not fluoridated.

If somebody wanted to do so you could do a controlled study pretty easily. Nobody wants to actually know if it makes a difference in today’s world. No grant money in it.

      • Suthenboy

I think? such a study was done some years after the program started, spurred by the lizard people believers claiming it was a plot to kill the population. My memory impression is that the study confirmed that fluoride was good, but given what The Pickle says above it is probably no longer necessary. Still, worth a look.

  23. R C Dean

Greta looks older and not as FAS in that vid. Also, she’s obviously got a teleprompter.

    • Chipping Pioneer

Does OMWC’s offer to Greta still stand?

She might be getting a bit long in the tooth.

Standing, lying down, whatever. I don’t think he specified.

  24. Suthenboy

Greta. Of course she supports Palestine. Who could have seen that coming?
The left’s stances on any cause can easily be surmised by answering the question: What is the most evil stance one could take?

    • R C Dean

Plus, the Swedes have a long, proud tradition of antisemitism.

  25. Pope Jimbo

Remember how all the experts talked about how hard it is to convert office towers into residential units? Well Minneapolis is unburdened by what has been!

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey signed a city ordinance Tuesday afternoon that streamlines the process of converting unused office space into housing units.

The ordinance allows for conversion projects to undergo administrative review instead of Planning Commission approval. This approach reduces review time by up to two months and eliminates public hearings from the process.

The ordinance also eliminates the requirement for inclusionary zoning for affordable units of 50 or more for the next five years, he said. But projects seeking financial assistance will still need to meet affordability requirements.

Frey said 70 percent of workers come into downtown at least one day a week and those figures are trending upwards. Still, he added, the city realizes it might not get back to 100 percent.

“This is no longer going to just be a place where people come in to work at 8 a.m. and leave at 5 p.m.,” Frey said. “We’re going to have a beautiful diversity of use and people.”

    • Pope Jimbo

After the bullshit that walks, here is how money is talking in Minneapolis

Two downtown Minneapolis office towers have sold in a deal representing one of the core’s steepest discounts in recent history.

The 634,000-square-foot Forum buildings, previously known as International Centre and Oracle Centre, sold last week for $6.5 million, according to a real estate filing with the Minnesota Department of Revenue published Monday afternoon.

The price is about 91% lower than the property’s last sale, at $73.7 million in 2019.

Some of the other major discounts of office buildings in and around the CBD have included the Kickernick Building and LaSalle Plaza, which sold 80% and 70%, respectively, below their last purchase prices.

I’m waiting to see how they are going to make the fat cats who just took a 80% bath whole. No way those guys are going to actually lose their money. The tax payers are going to get fleeced somehow.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

If investors are putting up their own money, I don’t see a problem. But I’m guessing that’s not what is going to happen

      • Sean

        They always do!

      • slumbrew

91% lower than the property’s last sale

        😳

    • Fourscore

Needs some river frontage walking paths and beer joints. The one-a-days may need a place to flop though. Short term rentals for the win!

    • R C Dean

“70 percent of workers come into downtown at least one day a week”

The metric that matters is person days per week. Funny they don’t talk about that.

    • rhywun

      “affordability requirements”

      +1 poor door

It’s hard to think of a requirement that kills more new housing starts other than rent control and most forms of zoning and probably some others that escape me at the moment.

  26. Suthenboy

Just watched the Kamalamadingdong video. That was informative. I had no clue that the whole ‘fuck what the voters think’ Kamala replacement debacle was Joe’s idea.

  27. Brochettaward

I tend to roll my eyes at “x is a distraction from the real issue!” thing. Like when people use it to scoff at talk about UFO’s.

But then I look at how obsessed people are with P-Diddy being a faggot rapist and I’m like…yea, people really are too dumb to hold two thoughts in their heads at once.

  28. Brochettaward

Who would have thought a girl who just turned black would be the one to bring hope and joy back?

I think most people would say that’s kind of racist.

Hope and Joy isnt as bad as Goldie and Dusty.
