Perhaps I need to stop with the conspiracy podcasts. You know, like Joe Rogan.

Nah. This is my review of Sleepy Dog Long Leach Hazy Wheat:

As we all are aware, birds are not real. As noted in a few alternative publications the birds are dying off for whatever reason. Maybe its the bugs they eat are also dying off in alarming numbers. I am willing to concede the “alarming numbers” part is probably due to the immense raw number of insects that are out there. After all they travel in swarms.

That said, it seems odd that engineers are developing systems to use the remains of these flying pests for use as drones. Its not just putting a transmitter into a swarm of yellow jackets (why use bees?) to launch at your enemies, its putting the bug brain into a drone. Maybe its easier to control drones by spraying pheromones rather than a radio transmitter. I have my doubts.

Then they began turning dead birds into drones. The bird was designed by nature to fly, all they’re really doing is remote piloting a bird, right?

At some point, they’re going to experiment on something a bit closer on the evolutionary scale. Where on Earth do they think this is at all a good idea? You know where, China:

Scientists have revived activity in the brains of pigs up to nearly an hour after circulation had ceased. In some cases, functionality was sustained for hours through a surprising discovery by researchers in China.

This achievement represents a huge step forward in working out how to restore brain function after a patient has suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. It suggests that doctors may be able to widen the brief window for successful resuscitation of patients following cardiac arrest.

The ChiComs won’t stop there. There will be armies of cyborg livestock at their control. They’re already claiming they designed robots that can built highways without the aid of humans. They won’t be humans, it’ll be the bodies of braindead dissidents forced to work as drones until the flesh is no longer able to handle a pickaxe.

…or maybe this weekend marks the 40th anniversary of The Terminator and I have the unique 21st century problem of teaching a teenager how to drive in the presence of Waymo robot taxis. Thanks a lot Gov. Ducey.

Typically I don’t always go for this style of hazy wheat because of a distaste bananas. The ester, as you know, that triggers the scent receptor ensconced by your skull just above your nasal cavity that lets you know you are in the presence of bananas just happens to be nearly identical to the same ester in certain brewing yeasts. That yeast is floating in this beer. At least its not so pronounced here. Maybe they used a type typically used in IPA, but I wasn’t immediately revolted when I drank it. It was fairly pleasant. It was nice and if they start selling these in tall cans I might add it to the empty spot in the rotation when Huss decided they no longer sell their Kölsch in 25oz cans. Bastards. This is going to be the ugly reboot of Battlestar Galactica.

I wonder why almost all the pricey microbrew stuff is in cans not bottles?

Also, four packs, not six packs.

    • Gustave Lytton

Because the can fucksticks won the war. Cheaper and almost as easy to produce with new methods.

Also because their brains and tastebuds died in the hop madness.

      • MikeS

And they weigh less (shipping costs are crazy high) and they also let in zero light.

        I much prefer cans.

      • Suthenboy

Mike, sometimes the art is in the thing itself being portrayed. Sometimes the art is in the portrayal of that thing. Ideally we shoot for both.
Yes, the contents of the container are the ‘art’ but only for as long as it takes to consume it. Sometimes the art is also in the container.
This is why some people love bottles and collect them.
My son collects whiskey bottles. I was fortunate enough to find a pristine Jack Daniels 1 quart bottle in a creek bank on family property and donate it to his collection. Best info I can find: Jack Daniels sold in crocks until the end of the civil war. Then switched to 1 quarter gallon bottles, then around 1900 switched to one fifth gallon bottles. So, someone in my family past one of them sat on the creek bank and drank that whiskey then tossed the bottle in the creek between the civil war and 1900. The funny thing is I am fairly sure I know who it was.

Cans? Meh. Drink it and the can is just trash.
If any of you accuse me of having so much as a single drop of sentimentality in me I will call you a liar.

      • MikeS

Suth’, I’m very much with you on the art of objects. I have a nearly uncontrollable urge to collect things; Coca-Cola memorabilia, numismatia, rocks, etc. One of my collections is (Jacob) Schmidt Beer paraphernalia. Over the years they did a number of different artwork series on their beer cans. Cans can be beautiful, too.

Now, I’m not saying anyone is making beer cans like that anymore. And I’m right there with you that the inherent beauty in a bottle is far greater than a plain old can. However, nobody* is making what most would consider to be collectable beer bottles, either. For practical reasons, I’d rather buy my beer in cans than bottles.

*I would not be surprised if there is someone doing it somewhere. If there is, they aren’t selling beer in my neck of the woods. And I hope they don’t, because I don’t need another collection!

      • Suthenboy

You are right Mike. I forgot about Schmidt beer. I saw a video on that once put together by. someone that collected them.
I have the collector bug too…bad. If I win the lottery I will indulge in an epic way. Really epic.

      • DEG

tastebuds died in the hop madness.

No argument on the hop madness being… madness, but I thought newer cans had liners to prevent a metallic taste getting into the beer?

    • J. Frank Parnell

Also, four packs, not six packs.

      Shrinkflation!

Seriously though, it would be nice if the 4-packs were 2/3 the price of 6-packs, but that never seems to be the case.

    • mexican sharpshooter

Also, four packs, not six packs.

Hold on there. 4 packs tend to come in 16oz cans so that makes 64oz total. 6 packs typically come in 12oz cans for a total of 72oz. You’re only losing 2/3 of a can.

Plus with a 16oz (or 1 pint) I can fill the entire pint glass without having to open 2 12oz cans. Which is beginning to sound like the hot dogs come in packs of 8 while buns come in packs of 6 conundrum.

    From my dead thread link:

Harris was also joined by country legend Willie Nelson, who sang some of his greatest hits, including “On the Road Again.”

“Hey, how are y’all doing?” the 91-year-old Nelson asked the crowd. “Are we ready to say Madam President?”

Fuck you, Willie. That shit ain’t right.

    • Brochettaward

You should see what Willie got up to at the Diddy parties.

      • Chafed

        Pics or gtfo.

      • juris imprudent

Not even Diddy can keep up smokin’ dope with Willie Nelson!

  6. The Late P Brooks

Democrats warn that a winnowing of rights and freedoms will only continue if Trump is elected. Republican lawmakers in states across the U.S. have been rejecting Democrats’ efforts to protect or expand access to birth control, for example.

“In America, freedom is not to be given. It is not to be bestowed. It is ours. By right. And that includes the fundamental freedom of a woman to make decisions about her own body and not have the government telling her what to do,” Harris said.

“Government off our backs” candidate, she is.

    Stop it. You’re killing me.

    • Brochettaward

I didn’t think I’d actually see a Democrat candidate touting their freedom-supporting bonafides again in my lifetime. But here we are.

There’s no other freedom she supports other than sticking a coat hanger in yourself to scramble the brains of a fetus, but here we are.

    • Shpip

Republican lawmakers in states across the U.S. have been rejecting Democrats’ efforts to protect or expand access to birth control, for example.

Funny, I remember when for a couple of decades Republicans wanted to make The Pill OTC, but were fought tooth and nail by the donks and the Family Practice / OBGYN lobby. I guess if by “expand access” you mean “force other people pay for” your birth control, the quote is technically correct.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

They think in terms of positive rights rather than negative rights. So if a Republican doesn’t want to pay for someone’s birth control, they are taking away a right.

      • Rat on a train

Don’t use their propaganda terms. There are no positive rights. Rights exist as part of our nature. They don’t require anyone to provide them.

      • juris imprudent

Rights existed in earlier times? Or are they a more modern concept? Say the last 300 years.

      • Suthenboy

Either negative rights always existed or not at all. They have been recognized for the last 300 or so. By some.
Hint: The not giving is taking proponents may have been vocal for that time period but they were really just the same old shit that has existed since the beginning of time.

      • juris imprudent

Suthen, that’s a great point about since the beginning of time. The whole idea is relatively speaking, of recent usage. That doesn’t make it a bad idea, but it clearly isn’t as God laid it down along with the foundation of the earth.

    • The Other Kevin

      “For example.”

There are probably a lot of other rights and freedoms they are talking about, right?

    • Suthenboy

Is this the same lot that decries the first and second amendments as obstacles to their “total control”? Surely it cant be. They would never talk out of both sides of their mouths in order to get a boot on our necks, not them, no way.

  7. LCDR_Fish

    Still in VA.

Hit up COVA brewing on Wed and Pleasure House Brewing a 2nd time yesterday. Planning to hit Commonwealth brewing for brunch tomorrow (all within walking distance).

Technically, I’m waiting on a waiver for my overseas orders due to a minor back issue – since some overseas places have fewer providers…even though it’s not a critical issue and I’m willing to pay out of pocket or go elsewhere for periodic “treatment”.

Hopefully I can get something confirmed this week. I’ve already had to cancel/reschedule 2 flights. Getting really bored here in VA.

Worst case scenario…I can request alternate orders somewhere stateside (or HI)…but that would still require rerouting all my household goods and other stuff.

The drone spycraft is understandable, predictable and terrifying. I’m kinda happy I don’t know where they, including ours, all are. Today my bird watching will be over clear, northern Indiana skies. Have a Mission errand, to go to MI to purchase products I *could* purchase closer in IL, but NOT legally in IN. Hilariously, MI taxes are much better on this matter, so much the extra ~2hrs is worth (last I checked) ~$100+ more in taxes alone.
PLUS, I get to drive up Highway 31, empty farmland except ’round Kokomo, the Grissom Air [Reserve] Force Base. I will be on my old route to Peru. Fun to make that same trip without thinking of ledes, story ideas or how an interview will go. Stocking up to eliminate travel before work begins ‘next’ week. It’s a fond, open country drive to gather thoughts.

I’ll be ’round later for more full thoughts, esp re: Rogan/Trump and WS G2, the game that deservedly created millions of domestic and international fans, as much as I loathe Yanks/LAD. ‘Member when Anthony Rizzo, then a Cub, struck out Freeman? I do.
(ALSO: Anyone got info on oral THC tests? Last plasma center openly didn’t care if I was positive, though it was a urine test. (One of those, I’m prepared for.) Best I’ve seen is it is detectable for 24-72hrs after use. So, easy enough, but I do wonder with vaping rather than properly smoking it.)

  10. The Late P Brooks

    So, anyway…

A few minutes ago, I was standing at my kitchen sink washing my accumulated dirty dishes, and Pandora serves up “I Feel Good” by James Brown. Which gets me thinking. I have recently seen multiple news articles in which a white progressive writer sputters and wheezes about uber-misogynist Donald Trump using James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s World” as part of his musical accompaniment, while blithely ignoring the onvious homage to a colossus of 20th century black culture.

And then I wondered, do they use “Living in America”? Because if I were running those shows I sure as hell would.

    • Chafed

Now I’m genuinely curious who picks his music.

  11. The Late P Brooks

And now Willie Nelson is on. Fuck you willie, you commie ass kisser.

    • creech

So not only does she consort with warmongers, now she welcomed a guy who refused to pay his “fair share” of taxes.

  12. UnCivilServant

I got rid of the Bin.

ReStore was more than happy to take it, as it was unused as far as they knew (bags of bottles don’t dirty up a plastic bin, and they’d be more sorried about it being a long time home for garbage).

I picked up a small table which turned out to be the exact same height as my soldering station workbench. (which will undoubtedly become cluttered with stuff before you can say “level surface syndrome”)

    • The Other Kevin

Great! I like those stores. Not surprised you walked out with something.

    • MikeS

      “level surface syndrome”

Ugh…my shop is sad example of a bad case of this. One of my weekend projects is trying to organize some of the clutter

      • Gustave Lytton

        Yes, but which weekend?

  13. The Other Kevin

I enacted the needful and listened to the whole 3 hour Rogan/Trump podcast. I did so while working out and making breakfast and shaving, so it wasn’t a complete waste of time. If you’ve seen any Trump interviews or debates, there will be nothing new to you. But it was a great move for Trump. I told Mrs. TOK there are three Trumps: The one at rallies, the one doing hostile interviews, and the more relaxed and relatable one who does friendly interviews. That third Trump was on the podcast, in front of a huge audience that might not know him very well. The conversation was good, especially the side track about MMA and boxing. They could easily have talked for 3 more hours, and Trump said he’d come back. It would be fun if he won and came back as President.

Unless you’re looking for something to have on in the background or while driving, I’d say skip it and just watch the highlights.

    • Chafed

      Thanks for enacting our labor.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

There was no Heil Hitler. So disappointing. Or maybe it was there as a dog whistle that MSNBC recognized. Or maybe he’s saving it for his MSG really.

      • The Other Kevin

I didn’t hear anything controversial, but then again I’m not a professional journalist trained to find things people say and take them out of context.

      • Gender Traitor

“He praised Robert E. Lee!!! That proves he wants to bring back slavery!!!”/as Trump and Rogan joke, IIRC.

  14. The Late P Brooks

I made an excursion to the local ReStore. It was about 99% overpriced crap. There was a sink I considered buying, but I figured it would be cheaper at Lowes. I’d rather deal with the Boys’ Youth Ranch thrift store.

I’ve been putting off a repairs or two for the same reason. I should probably out a fresh coat of paint throughout the house though.

    • MikeS

Is there a doctor in the house?

    • The Other Kevin

Whomp, whomp. Scott Adams pointed something out, when JD Vance was at one of his rallies, a rather large woman behind him broke her chair and yelled. Instead of ducking he turned around and looked for what could have be a dangerous situation. He’s the kind of guy who runs toward danger.

    • R C Dean

I despise doctors wearing their white doctor costume coats for these political appearances.

    • slumbrew

Nein. Not banana beer. This is something else.

      • Chafed

It sounds good to me but then I like most wheat beers.

  18. UnCivilServant

What is it about two wheels that brings out the crazies?

I made a quick run to pick up some things for dinner. On the way back I heard a motocycle enging revving high. In my rearview mirror was a guy going on one wheel wobbling around and looking like he wanted to try to drive over my car. When we got to a red light, he tried to cut through a gas station parking lot, but my turn on red meant I was still in front of him until I turned off the main road.

Not all billionaires are created equal

Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, is the world’s richest person, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, and he’s been using his wealth and notoriety to back Trump’s bid to return to the White House. Musk has given nearly $75 million to the super PAC while campaigning in person for Trump in Pennsylvania and using his platform on X to do the same.

He said at one point Friday that he was trying to be the “anti-Soros,” a reference to financier George Soros’ support for progressive causes. Taking questions on a variety of subjects, he called for cutting government programs and reducing immigration. And on the topic of crime, he asserted without evidence that “there’s hardly a downtown in America that’s actually safe to walk in.” (Crime is falling across the nation and is near historic lows.)

Soros uses his money for good.

Crime is indeed falling, unless you take into account the newly revised FBI stats that say just the opposite.
