Bye Week Friday Links

by | Nov 8, 2024 | Cocktails, Daily Links, I Am Lame | 180 comments

This is the bye week for the Browns, so the girlfriend and I will likely hit up a nice local place for breakfast or brunch this weekend. Yes, there’s a difference, breakfast doesn’t involve alcohol. Let’s get going with some music, and get into some links.

So, who’s the more delusional? Democrat voters or the Browns front office?

Well, less jobs is usually bad, but less advocacy jobs? I think that sounds just fine.

In case there are any lurkers out there who feel they need to leave the country now. But remember, other places have issues too.

I notice a couple of items missing from this list.

I really feel like they missed a prime opportunity by only going after sporting events.

Good news everybody!

Pretty sure everyone already knew this, at least the Indians have had to deal with it.

For the cocktail this week, I’m pulling from a book I have (Apothecary Cocktails – more a series of recipes than I usually prefer, but with some interesting notes on each) for a wonderful cold weather cocktail.

Cold Cure #1001

  • 12 ounce pot of hot peppermint tea
  • 5-6 ounces of Benedictine
  • 3-4 ounces sweet vermouth
  • 10 drops Jamaican bitters

So, start with making tea. Then fill up two mugs with boiling water and let them sit while you finish making the drink. To the pot of tea, add the other ingredients, give it a gentle stir, and let sit for a bit. Dump the water out of the (now warm) mugs, and pour yourself a glass.

Since the recipe is pretty basic (but really good), I’ll use this as your friendly reminder that vermouth will not last forever, in fact, it’ll go bad really quickly. If you’re not using it a lot, I recommend smaller bottles (375 ml) as well as the standard recommendation to store it in the fridge once it’s opened.

So let’s get into this weekend, and have some fun.

“I believe that she is more respected than ever within our party,” said Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis of California, a longtime Harris ally.

    LOLOL…

She’s the hero we don’t deserve.

She might just make it to Iowa next time.

Dumbasses of the World — unite!

I’d say she was eminently forgettable — except the sole thing I do remember is a bunch of really f’ing annoying ads on YouTube about “abortion being at risk in California” (eyeroll). Which since I find her annoying probably means she has a bright future in Sacramento. Ugh.

      • DenverJ

Look, it’s very simple: the SCOTUS returning the abortion issue to the States means that California has to outlaw abortion. If you don’t understand that logic, well, congratulations for not being an idiot.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Kamalama is going to be quietly put out to pasture given a think tank job, and in a couple years she will stop even pretend to Zoom to meeting, and will just be mailed a check.

  2. kinnath

Clearly Kammie needs to start an Only Fans.

    • SDF-7

Ugh…. you owe all of us some serious brain bleach for that comment.

      • kinnath

        You’re welcome.

The Kammy of 30 years ago, yeah, sure.

Next for Kamala – so much day drinking.

    • SDF-7

She can hang out with the Pelosis and raid their ice cream freezer.

      • OBJ FRANKELSON

Tangentally related, I have heard that matching the Pelosi portfolio isn’t a sure thing since she lost the speaker’s gavel.

    • DenverJ

She can hang out with Hillary, and they can swap lies about how the Russians and sexism/racism was why they lost, and then “shot!”

FOAD? (Not that I really want her to — honestly, I think now that she’s outlived her usefulness to The Machine she’ll be in the Mostly Harmless category. Go be on a board or something and milk your residual fame, Kamala — you aren’t going to get a Clinton style Foundation or another run at it… so just live off the money I’m sure you squirreled away and leave everyone else alone. Or consider leaving the country now per the prior link).

    • DenverJ

It’ll be a college gig, bet.

    Good news everybody!

That is good news — and a little surprising for Nintendo, but I’ll take it. With most of what my son plays on his being from the Online thing these days (old Pokemon ports kind of stuff), that’s heartening that it would transfer when/if I upgrade him.

    • rhywun

That is good news. I just bought one a couple months ago.

I vowed not to but I said fuck it.

  8. Shpip

But it’s not just political tensions driving this interest. Many Americans are seeking a better quality of life, more affordable living costs and opportunities to embrace new cultures. Daniella Florez, who is moving to Albania from New York City, is among those making the leap—and while she says the election helped solidify her decision, it goes beyond that. “While there are many wonderful aspects of the United States, the quality of life I seek are personally not attainable for me here,” Florez told me in an interview.

    1) Moving *to* Albania is questionable judgement at best.

    2) Your inability to achieve the “quality of life” you seek sounds like a skill issue.

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

The fact that she’s already decided to go to Albania says she’s been thinking about it for a long time. One doesn’t just say, “The election didn’t go my way. I’m off to Albania!” She can probably have a decent life there if she can find a remote job. It’s unlikely she’ll find a local job without any local knowledge. And she will probably live in a small community of transient expats for a couple years without learning the language before deciding she really misses the US.

    • EvilSheldon

Even under the best possible circumstances, living in a foreign country requires substantial resources, flexibility, emotional stability, and the ability to cope with pressure and difficult circumstances.

In other words, yeah, right. Pull the other one.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

There are a lot of people who give it a go because they think it will resolve their issues. The first few months will be exciting because everything is new. A few months in morale starts to decline as you discover the grass isn’t necessarily greener and all the locals are a bunch of idiots. Then maybe you adapt and realize that you and the locals are both idiots. Morale might improve or it might not and then it’s time to go home.

      • Evan from Evansville

In the ESL world, folk either leave home to explore the world or to escape their own. Takes those mindsets and nature. If one had a spouse/partner, it may be even harder cuz folk react differently. Who knows if the desire to go is wholly mutual? Anyone with kids? You best be damn rich with realistic plans of continuing such.

And… Albania. I had a Macedonian exchange student live with me in high school. He detested Albanians. When asked what he’d do with them if he were Prez/Ruler etc, with sincerity, he told us he’d give them 48hrs to get out. “Then, kill them all.” <– The Balkans would be tough as fuck.

      • KK, Plump & Unfiltered

The longest I spent overseas was 6 months in Turkey. It is an emotional rollercoaster, and I had a group of Americans around me most of the time, and at least one good friend with me the whole time (except for the couple of cross-country bus trips I took by myself – that was challenging)

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

If she is worried about the patriarchy here in the states, she really needs to read up on Albania.

    • Gender Traitor

moving to Albania from New York City

Dave Collum and Jim Kunstler were talking about how much memes helped out the Republicans. I think it’s true and social media is destroying the perception of Democrats with young people.

I saw this meme (sorta) and burst out laughing a few minutes ago.

I am overdosing on prog tears… to quote the Duke of Wellington: “Believe me, nothing except a battle lost can be half so melancholy as a battle won.”

Nah! I’m just glad it’s over! At least there will be a few years (months?) of respite from the crush of government.

  12. Lord Humungus

Apparently that “right wing” pollster Rasmussen was closer than most pollsters. He made a jab at 538 and Nate Silver:

When I asked Mitchell if he thinks there will be more honesty from the polling industry going forward, he didn’t have high hopes. “I don’t think so,” he told me. “I think Nate Silver has a business model that doesn’t require accuracy. I think 538’s got bottomless money and will continue on as a propaganda operation.

    https://pjmedia.com/matt-margolis/2024/11/08/rasmussen-reports-completely-vindicated-by-2024-election-results-n4934072

    • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

One theory I’ve heard is that media polls are kept close to attract eyeballs and induce campaigns to spend money on ads.

    • whiz

To TPTB: I just submitted a followup article to my previous one on polls that discusses the accuracy of a number of polls, including Rasmussen.

      • Lord Humungus

Will read – don’t know why but my inner geek loves reading about polls. So much GIGO.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

To be fair, Silver sold 538 a while back. So conflating the two is not really helpful.

      • Ownbestenemy

Well we conflate Drudge with Drudgereport so fair is fair.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Alsotoo, Rasmussen took a hit in 2020 due to “missing” Biden polling as well as he did. Now, as more and more eyes are turing towards the missing 15 million votes for both Obama and Harris, it is starting to look like one more sign pointing to election fraud in that year.

      • Ownbestenemy

Funnily they are only looking to 2020 and not prior as evidence of ‘missing’ votes.

Niren, who has lived in both the US and Canada, voiced similar concerns. He said his own mother, who needs a hip replacement, was on a waiting list for 18 months.

“There are people who have to fly to other countries — including the United States — to get cancer treatment because it takes too long,” he said. “In the US, you can get a specialist appointment in two days.”

Niren also said Canadians paid elevated taxes to support such a comprehensive healthcare system.

“People call it free healthcare — it’s not free,” he said. “It’s very expensive because you’re paying through the taxes.”

    No way.

In 74 days, Vice President Kamala Harris will leave office, with no concrete plans about what to do next or how to proceed as a private citizen for the first time since she was elected San Francisco’s district attorney in 2003.

I figure there are a few firms down the road in Silicon Valley that (a) need a diversity hire on their boards and (b) remember that Kamala did for them as AG what she did for Willie Brown when she was a private citizen.

Easy work, good money, and she can spend the rest of her time in her new McMansion on (polished) Nob Hill.

    • Lord Humungus

I’m sure she will get a “think tank” position, or President at a lefty -fill-in-the-blank- college.

      • JaimeRoberto (carnitas/spicy salsa)

She’ll be a “professor” at Cal.

      • Shpip

Both of those are the usual “soft landing” spots for Democrats who lose. Florida’s own Val Demings had two-fered her way up to chief of the Orlando Police Department, then got elected to Congress in a CRA “designated darkie” district, where she had an effective lifetime sinecure.

She was persuaded to give up her place in the House for a Quixotic run at the Senate against Marco Rubio, where she lost by sixteen points.

Despite having no academic chops to speak of, she’s at Georgetown now.

      • rhywun

This. If she isn’t president of Harvard or Columbia within two years I’ll eat my hat.

Now I have to worry about Hunter’s pardon for 74 days. If Joe croaks before the pardon will Prez Kamala still make it good? It would be hilarious if she said something like,

One anecdotal story, but the wife and kids were at some special Dino exhibit that included a chat with a paleontologist. My wife asked about the Dino’s had feathers and other things. The paleontologist was really low key. Acknowledged there really wasn’t enough data etc to be sure, so I attribute some of this to pop scientist and faux science journalism manufacturing a hypothesis or thought into concrete theory that we must spout and publish in kids books etc

She received the 2024 nomination in part because President Biden dropped out of the race with too little time for the party to hold a proper primary election.
Yet four years is an eternity in politics. Ms. Harris has access to the party’s largest donor network and could bank on nationwide buyer’s remorse if the second Trump term is as chaotic and damaging to the country as she predicted.

      • dbleagle

I don’t think the Cali machine care two shits about the House. The open seats are all safe. What the machine wants is to make a popular vote victory for the Aldi Obama.

Since the Jan 6 certification of the election is by law the GOP should ram through a short law that says the certification of the election shall be held 14 days after the election; only slates certified by the appropriate state authority NLT 12 days after the election shall be eligible to cast their ballots; that if a state has not met this requirement, then the state is ruled ineligible and the number required for election be adjusted down to reflect 50% plus one of the eligible state votes.

      • cyto

        It works.

Still cannot see how they lost. Maybe your whole show saying men are shit might be what did ya in…but what do I know. I am just a white male.

    • Suthenboy

Wow. I have heard about it but never actually watched it. Is that real? The show really would be improved by a bunch of hens running around that table top squawking, clucking and shitting all over it. I might actually watch that.

They really do have a ‘beatings will continue until moral improves’ mentality….in spades. There is no hope for them. Sadly we are stuck with them.
“We lost. What is wrong with America? What a bunch of non-college educated rubes! They just aren’t smart enough to see how much better we are than they are !”

How long before they call for abolishing ‘democracy’ because people are too stupid to vote? You know it’s coming.

    • Grumbletarian

Maybe if we call them names even louder it will change their minds.

Tonight is the end of 1520 Main. I know only 3 people are reading it, but Friday night slot was begging for content, so there you go.

Next week, pirates. Lots of gore and sex.

    • Ownbestenemy

I quietly read it…just a bit late. Not my thing but its unique content and I appreciate it. Now for some Black Flag stuff with pirates, gore and sex? Game on.

      • R.J.

Same. I even bought a hard copy! And I am excited the pirate book is next. Yay! I thank you for all your effort. It is just really hard for me to be there on Friday nights.

    • DEG

I’ll be reading late or maybe tomorrow. I have a birthday party to go to tonight.

      • dbleagle

I’ve been reading it…..just later than most.

    • Evan from Evansville

I also read along, just too late to join in. All much, much appreciated.

how to proceed as a private citizen for the first time since she was elected San Francisco’s district attorney in 2003.

I’m sure she’ll find some nice, dumb rich guy to shack up with.

    • Ownbestenemy

I hear McDonalds might be hiring. She has experience, right?

      • Ownbestenemy

I assumed here that the reference is to Kamala…if not, still stands…McDonalds can give you the skills needed later in life for a successful career.

      • DEG

Yes, it’s a story about Kamala Harris.

  24. Ownbestenemy

I know I have something unique. Mrs OBE has strong opinions and we’ve butted heads but we know we are individuals navigating the world of kids and life together. I thank God every day for that woman. What broke us as a nation? Internet? TV? Hell, I look back to my mom, aunts, grandma…strong women who took no lip from their husbands but also accepted them. What the hell changed?

    • Mojeaux

My husband was almost a political blank slate, trending D because of environmental influences. BUT his life wasn’t working, so he looked around and decided that since his way wasn’t working, he’d try something else. He went back to church. He moved away from California to Salt Lake then to Evanston, Wyoming. He’d been going back to church for about a year or more before I met him. He was focusing on bettering himself so when I came along with my conservatarianness, he was open to listening.

I made my case, he didn’t find anything objectionable about it, and found it to be rather commonsensical, so he’s been on board with me ever since. Then I gave him Atlas Shrugged.

I could never have married someone politically different from me. Different religion? Sure, so long as one side wasn’t particularly hateful about the other side. Politics? No.

I’m in a very similar situation. Wonderful wife, couldn’t ask for better, but if the election had been Hitler vs. Trump she might have voted for the Real Der Fuehrer. A very visceral dislike of OMB, which is strange because she’s much more level headed and rational than I.

I covered that one already Sensei. I did not disappoint. See my summation of the morning links. I think you will especially enjoy it.

    • Suthenboy

Here, I will repost that bit

I am a bit annoyed by the injection of drama and sexiness into the sciences. Always with the ‘cataclysm’ business. Always with the extrapolating dramatic narratives from scant evidence. It leads us astray a bit. Cut that shit out guys. I am not as smart as they are but…
Them – “A giant cataclysmic asteroid killed the dinosaurs!”
Me – “Oh? When did they die?”
Them – “They disappeared from 65-75 millions years ago! They were wiped out!”
Me – “Uh….that is a ten million year stretch. That doesnt seem so sudden to me. Also, they didnt really die out. I am looking at one right now. Is it possible that the evolution of mammals came along and rats started eating their eggs or something like that….much slower and less dramatic than a giant explosion, riots and a sex scandal in the royal family?”
Them – “Shut up, I am trying to make a sale here!”

      • SarumanTheGreat

My understanding was their demise was relatively sudden, and the extinction was not just confined to the non-bird dinos but a whole shitload of other critters and plants from plankton to plesiosaurs. A couple of thousands of years at most, and probably lots quicker for most. All the oceans became almost sterile and huge areas of North America were burnt to a crisp in the firestorm from Chicxulub. Our ancestors survived because they were generalists, if it was edible down the hatch.

      • Suthenboy

Consider the time frame of actual catastrophes we have witnessed, event to recovery. Now look at the time frames they are talking about. When they say sudden with regards to extinction events, mountain ranges rising, etc they are talking millennia and thousands of millennia. Then they toss in the Michael Bay asteroid and conflate the two time perspectives.
Asteroid hits – 200 years later its like it never happened. Look at Mt. St. Helens eruption, Valdez crash, earthquakes, volcano eruptions etc.
The problem is money. They need money for research. It’s hard to get millions to research that one time when it took tens of millions of years to happen (Dino fossils tapered off over ten million years) but easy to sell BANG! POP! BLAM! SCREAMS! BLOOD! DEATH! or at least easier to get attention.
The Dino line, most of it, died out due to being out competed. Look at the things animals do: fly, swim, climb, run, forage, hunt, evade, adapt and so on. No matter what it is there is a mammal that does it best. The reptiles, except for a few remnants, had a long sunset coinciding with the sunrise for the mammals. Those two events were not unrelated.

Just for fun I hear about the great cataclysmic floods in the geological record. They look like movie tidal waves, yet in the submerged forests they use as evidence all of the trees are still standing. They aren’t ripped up by the roots and in large log jams. *The one off of the coast of Alabama is particularly interesting.

They sensationalize. It’s just human nature. The earth is a very dynamic place but from our puny perspective it moves in slow motion. Very slow.

‘My’ theory: Blue *wanted* Harris and Walz to lose. Let all their shit fall on Trump, make Deep State as nasty as possible, and BOOM. Those Dem losers out of the way and any idea of Trump having a ‘successful’ term goes bye-bye. Makes ’28 easier for ’em. I predict a dreadful four years, just a different flavor than Harris’ would’ve been.

Vance is troubling for them. I don’t exclude another assassination attempt(?), but Vance is primo for a backup. He’s far scarier to them than Trump for their long-term Power. (Very wise choice.) Wild Card: Does Trump have the smarts + ability to make powerful Executive decisions in ‘our’ favor. Strip/End the Dept of Edu, as an ‘easy’ example.

‘Twill be interesting. Curiosity, She Wrote!
