My worst fear did not come to pass. I was semi-terrified that the Deep State would decide that the way to nail down the election would be to have a MAGA guy assassinate Kamala.

Sure, Kamala wouldn’t be president, but King Walz would be. That would be worse.

    • cyto

They are building some sort of platform at the White House.

Wild ass speculation was that they were going to install Kamala early to replace Biden

      • J. Frank Parnell

At one point I guessed that, if Trump won, Biden would step down early so Kamala could have her spot in the history books, but now I’m pretty sure Biden hates her guts and is going to claim he would have won and spend the last months of his presidency rubbing that shit in her face.

In contrast, NY Times provides this useful info:

Arizona: First results are expected around 10 p.m. Eastern time. Most voters cast ballots by mail, and counting typically takes days. Officials in Maricopa County said full tabulation could take 10 to 13 days.

        UPDATE 9:04 p.m. ET:

According to the New York Times, in Virginia, with 51 percent reporting, Trump has taken a slightly less than 30,000 vote lead over Harris. It’s still a state leaning to the Democrats per the Times but the fact Trump is up right now–49.8 percent to 48.5 percent–probably has the Harris campaign uneasy.

      • UnCivilServant

As of 9:43 with 63% count, Trump is ahead 47K votes in VA.

I don’t know the in and outs of federal electoral laws but if the GOP wins big in the House and Senate, the first thing they should do is make Election Day a national holiday and absolutely dissuade early voting unless you are living or going to be abroad. Any public employee, or an employee of a government contractor, or any other institution recieving government funding in the form of grants, loans, subsidies, or tax breaks, is not permitted to vote in any election related to those levels of government which funds their employment.

They try to create a buzz of inevitability to supress the west coast vote

I remember in 2000 they called florida for Gore and said Georgia was too close to call.

Georgia went 60-40 for Bush, and we all know about Florida.

But they went on national TV and said this basically made a Bush win impossible, driving down the west coast republican vote. (This was 7 pm eastern, before the polls in Florida even closed. Some west coast polls had 5 hours left)

Yes to rideshare unions – bad: let’s add another $25 to every Uber ride.

No to forcing tipped workers to the minimum wage – good: that would have killed restaurants dead.

Yes to dropping MCAS as a high school graduation requirement – bad: because objective standards are raycist! Or something.

The other two I’m ambivalent about – yes to auditing the legislature but the auditor is an elected executive-branch position, which isn’t great. My registered-R buddy things the rump Republican Party in this state should be laser focused on the state auditor race next time around for this reason.

No to “legalizing” psychedelics – it created a whole huge raft of new licensing with all the associated opportunities for graft.

Maybe in the short term. It’s been that way forever here and still have restaurants.

      • slumbrew

Yes, in the long term some restaurants will figure it out. We have “no tipping” restaurants now, which just tack on 20% (or more) onto your bill vs. you tipping.

Any resturant who wants to do so now can do so. Notably, they’re all higher-end places.

In the short term it will blow up a lot of restaurants, needlessly, and will have a disproportionate impact on more downmarket places.

Amazing how 100% of the late shifts or recounts always end up going the Democratic way?

The first time they tried this it was when Franken beat Norm for the Minnesoda Senate seat. Every single adjustment went the DFL way. They were always minor clerical errors that were just being rectified. But these minor changes kept happening until Franken got more votes and then all the counting stopped.

The MSM flooded the airwaves with stories about how on the up and up it all was.

After 2020 I’m doubly worried we are going to start seeing barriers put up at the counting sites and massive vote dumps showing up.

      Eh.

Maybe, but the RNC seems to be much more on top of this stuff than four years ago.

Who was chairman of the RNC last Prez election?

I just looked it up; it was Ronna McDaniel.

From Wikipedia: During McDaniel’s tenure as chair of the RNC, the Republican Party lost eight gubernatorial elections, four seats in the United States Senate, 20 seats in the House of Representatives, and the presidency. In December 2022, Axios wrote that McDaniel “has thus far failed to preside over a single positive election cycle.”

The article bills her as a staunch Trump supporter, but she is also the niece of Mitt Romney, who hates Trump.

      • Pope Jimbo

Trump’s fuckup in 2020 was not suing everyone before the election started.

In Minnesoda the DFL SoS agreed to “settle” on some huge changes in election law. The group sued saying that the pandemic meant that the laws should be loosened up.

By settling, the laws were changed without the legislature’s approval (and the state constitution says that they are the only ones who can change them). A few of the GOP wanted to sue, but the others all wussed out.

Trump should have stepped in and sued at that point. By waiting until after the election to challenge, there was no hope to rectify things.

      • Gender Traitor

Per RealClearPolitics, GA has 16 electoral votes. They show Trump/Vance with 232 and Harris/Walz with 216 at the moment.

      • kinnath

        WI 10
        MI 15
        PA 19
        GA 16

Needs to get 38 EC votes.

        Ignoring AZ at this point.

      • UnCivilServant

He has Georgia, even CNN has admitted it now.

      • kinnath

Trump is up 115K in WI; 210K in MI; and 170K in PA.

Even in big cities, manufacturing 100 to 200 thousand votes out of thin air is going to be obvious.

I’m wondering if the Democratic Party is willing to cheat for Kamala (in the glaring way it did for Biden).

The saner people in the party must realize how bad she would be as a president. They also know that their Trump hysteria is bullshit.

My gut feeling was that this election was a flyer that the Dems took on just how effective an entire campaign of gaslighting by the entire MSM could be. If Kamala wins, great. They now know that with the MSM they can get anyone elected. If she loses, also fine. She’s not going to get to jump to the front of the line in 2028 as a black/asian/woman who’s turn it is.

Trump wins, the real excitement begins.

  85. groat scotum

My only election prediction I’m giving this year:

The lib tears aren’t going to be nearly as free-flowing and delectable as they were in 2016. Harris didn’t offer much to women. She wasn’t an icon for aging lib voters like Hillary was, she was hated by the hardcore pro-Hamas youngsters, she had no real runway, given that her plane never taxied, so she couldn’t really excite anybody, much less the minority voters Dems think are theirs by right of conquest or whatever. I don’t think Dems, whatever their histrionics up till now, will be super surprised or all that upset about her loss.

I’m sad to say it, but I think the tearful tragic 2016 lib voter footage is a thing unique to 2016. We’ll always have those moments to reflect on and chortle over, but in 2024, we’re all a bit wiser and more cynical and frankly surlier and more aware of the cameras constantly on us.

I’m afraid, friends, I’m finally sick of winning.

  86. Rebel Scum

Pallets of ballots are currently being delivered to a “counting center” in Philly. You know, to save democracy.

    • groat scotum

This is what I’m hoping, that the GOP has learned from the disastrous Trump years and are zeroing in on the real pressure points that Dems have been exploiting for years. You don’t want them to cheat? They’ll always cheat. So shine a light on the cheat, watch the roaches scatter.

Trump is only down 50K votes there now. That has to be a kick in the nards for King Walz. The most perfect end to this race could be Harris losing and Minnesoda going for Trump. Watching Walz slink back to spend his last two years as gov with that shame hanging over his head would be epic.

    Looking ahead:

Looking at the OBVIOUS conspiracy theory here:

He’s being allowed to win. Harris was a stooge. Trump is walking into a political disaster Democrats realized they’d never resolve. More likely: they laid these tripwires knowing they can’t be resolved. Immigration: obvious. Too many illegals in the country to expel, too many coming in to repel. Social services: the income ceiling is dropping steadily and the outgo is rising rapidly. Home ownership? no resolving this, also a consequence of limitless illegal immigration. Let alone subsidizing healthcare and social security. And it’s not like Trump has resisted promising socializing these concerns. He’s been pretty flagrant about it. He’s kinda dumb that way.

I am, nor have I ever been, a Republican. I’m far from a doctrinaire conservative. However, I will unashamedly say how happy I am that Trump won. The man has many deep character flaws and I find the cult of personality surrounding him to be creepy and gauche. But, I do believe that he actually loves this country and he stands for common sense on many issues that the Commies have hijacked. So to that end… USA babes after dark!

Maybe Reagan, but I am unsure about him. But all the others always seem to like the US mostly because it gave them a bunch of power.

      • cavalier973

From my distanced observation, I would say that Trump actually liked people.

“Libertarian Party Underperforms in Presidential Election
The 2016 and 2020 elections were the best in the party’s history, but 2024 looks likely to fall far short.”

I had a friend that worked as a congressional staffer and also someone here mentioned this once – the DC elected officials, their staff and interns etc despise the citizenry beyond words and behind closed doors express that very openly with each other.

lets not get ahead of ourselves

NY just enshrined racism, free abortions, and men beating up women in its constitution.

  137. The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

One weird thing from Florida – Abortion is more popular than weed(though there were some ‘big corporation’ fears about it), and both got more than 50%, but seemed to have lost (Need 60% to amend the constitution).

I am really happy about JD Vance as VP. I just about finished Hillbilly Elegy and it isn’t that it is a great book, but it has some commonsense wisdom embedded in it, and you can see he is just a normal guy at heart. We need more of that in government, and less of weirdoes like Ballz and Harris.

    • The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

Oh, and Harris was way less popular than any other leftwing thing in the state. Trump is more popular in Florida than Harris is in NY.

It may also be an error to think this is the same as the States being more or less rightwing than in the past, as she was just an absolutely terrible candidate, and Trump is very unique.

    • rhywun

Trump increased his support everywhere, even NY – but abortion is why NY passed that disgraceful Prop 1 garbage.

  138. The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

Trump is a mixed bag (fiscally, especially). But he is better than the alternative. Glad, but still having mixed feelings about his win.

  139. The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

      Sorry, more like 20:30.

  140. Suthenboy

Addressing Lack’s observation above: The Democrat party and it’s platform seem rife with oikophobia.
My take: 1. People who grow up in dysfunctional family or social environments project that dysfunction onto the entire culture. The most notable symptom of this are people that adopt other cultures, religions or date outside of their own culture.
    2. People who hate American founding culture and ideals because they do not readily lend themselves to being ruled. The most notable symptom of this are people who run for public office.

The Democratic Party is a poison soup of those two ingredients.

    • Suthenboy

“People who hate American founding culture and ideals because they do not readily lend themselves to being ruled.”
I did not articulate that very well. What I mean to say is ‘people who want to rule and despise a culture because it does not lend itself to subjugation’.

      • The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

On my drive home yesterday day I was thinking how grateful I am for this aspect of American society.

Speeding is one of the greatest examples of widespread civil disobedience ever. Everyone feels safe going 5 over because ‘everyone does it’ and nothing happens.

      • Suthenboy

Obama’s sneering denigration of individualist culture is seared into my brain. What an idiot that fuckstick Twink is. Despite Joe’s dismal worst presidency in history and personal creepiness there is something about Obama that I hate even more. Smarminess? I think that is it.

    • The Artist Formerly Known as Lackadaisical

      Oikophpbia.

Great word, and needs to be levelled against the dems more.

“date outside of their own culture.”

      Careful there. /married an immigrant

But you’re not wrong. Part of why I did what I did because I was actively avoiding American-born women (to be fair, you have to remember I was living in a very blue part of NY). Quite literally I was suffering from Oikophobia, which led me to a wonderful woman who has helped turn my life around in every way.

      • Suthenboy

I have dated outside my culture as well. I was not a full blown oikophobe but I did mistakenly decide that all of the women here had a rattlesnake inside them. Turns out that isn’t true, I did find Mrs. Suthenboy, but I also discovered that that snake business is not associated with just our culture nor just to women. It seems to be an individual character thing. Who knew?

Highly surprising to see Trump this likely to win. It would be delicious if he also wins the popular vote. I expect at least one more assassination attempt on him before January.

      Agreed.

‘I expect at least one more assassination attempt on him before January.’

So, my NH Glibs and FreeStaters… what the hell is up with NH?

I remember when it was a slight, but reliable lean to the right, and now it seems to be solidly ‘blue’ in every presidential election, and don’t tell me it is just people crossing over from Mass. to vote illegally.

    • Pope Jimbo

The fact that Lily Tang Williams lost to the carpetbagger Mrs. Jake Sullivan makes me wonder what the fuck is going on there too.

    • Grumbletarian

The influx of unwashed Masses moving to NH over the years have flipped the state.

      • Grumbletarian

They’re voting legally just like the idgits who move from CA to TX vote legally.

    • DEG

Split ticket voting is very common here. Trump was never that popular here, and became less popular after his first term. Republican Federal candidates in NH have been consistently poor over the last ten or so years.

The state is not a Democrat state. Republicans control the state government:
      – Governor
      – 4-1 majority on the Executive Council
      – State Senate was 14-10 Republican. Eyeballing the numbers on WMUR’s website it looks like it will be either 15-9 or 16-8 Republican majority
      – State House was majority Republican. I haven’t gone over the numbers as there are 400 seats up for election, but I expect Republicans will stay in the majority.

If you think NH is Democrat, you need to explain why the state government is firmly in Republican control.

I saw some numbers from my town, which is a Republican town. Kamala Harris won in my town by a few hundred votes. Kelly Ayotte (Republican) won by about 1500 votes. State House delegation stays majority Republican, and the state senate district my town is a part of flipped from Democrat to Republican.

I don’t have time to write much more as I need to get to the gym and get to work, but I’ll add this for Pope Jimbo in case he’s still around: It was obvious to politically aware locals that Lily Tang Williams was going to lose. The district leans Dem. Goodlander has powerful local connections. She’s a Tamposi (big real estate developers in NH who were also prominent Republicans). Sununu hates actual libertarians (he’ll take awards from fake libertarians like CATO though) and so was never going to help Williams. Williams had no money for ads. Williams had only one good public appearance which was her last debate performance.

It looks like some 20 million voters just disappeared since 2020.

The popular vote is currently at Trump 71 million, Harris 66 million.

Somehow, despite population growth, Harris got 15 million fewer votes than Biden did in 2020.

Is that due to a depressed democrat base that just didn’t turn out?

    Or…

Is there a clue in the fact that counting did not stop in the major cities in all 5 swing states?

Did the increased vigilance of the Republican legal team have an effect?

It will be interesting to see final turnout numbers by state.

    • UnCivilServant

I have always said there was no way Gropey Joe got 80 Million votes. I strongly suspect his turnout was similar to what Harris got, only people were not as vigilant about interrupting ballot box stuffing.

      • cyto

It sure makes one suspect that, looking at the difference.

No 200k instant swings after mysterious counting stoppages.

      • R.J.

This is the correct take. Cheating was off the chain for Biden. Maybe not 20M worth , but 10M is within reason. And lots of people were just completely turned off by both candidates and did not vote.

    • rhywun

It looks like some 20 million voters just disappeared since 2020.

I was wondering about that too.

None of the obvious conclusions make any sense. I don’t think there are that many antifa, nor that the fortification efforts from 2020 found that many votes.

      Crazy.

    • juris imprudent

I’d say some of both. Trump in office really motivated his opposition, so the Dem turnout was realistically stronger in ’20. Also, the games played in ’20 couldn’t be replayed this year since the Repubs were wise to them.

    • WTF

      Embrace the power of “and”.

  158. cyto

We have a federation of states. One of the reasons for this is to have states act as laboratories of democratic experimentation, where other states can learn from their successes and failures.

Well, it has been several elections since DeSantis got rid of corrupt/incompetent election supervisors. Florida is able to count their votes quickly, getting to 90% in less than a half hour, and to 100% shortly after.

Meanwhile, all of the “swing states” were hours and hours counting. Arizona is still only 60% done.

It is time for the people to stand up to this… incompetence … and demand that they model Florida’s system.

Better if we shorten early voting to maybe a week, and rein in vote by mail at the same time.

Continuing to allow this farce is a “danger to democracy”, to borrow a phrase.
