Rest in peace, Paul Reubens. You are missed.

Pee Wee’s Playhouse Christmas Special

Welcome to the Christmas show! Tonight I am playing a classic you may not have seen in years. Time for another look. This was a great episode in Pee Wee’s Playhouse history, and it features:

  • William Marshall
  • Grace Jones
  • Frankie Avalon
  • Annette Funicello
  • CHARO CHARO CHARO
  • Little Richard
  • K.D. Lang
  • Zsa Zsa Gabor

And many many others, which sadly includes Whoopi Goldberg, who was never funny or entertaining. So please enjoy this incredible show! It really was a golden moment in television. Your mind will be blown if you have not seen it recently. Grace Jones alone is worth the price of admission singing “Little Drummer Boy.”

So watch! Or don’t! Everything is voluntary! I hope you all have a Merry Christmas or Happy Hannukah, or Festivus. I will be at sea on vacation this week. Talk amongst yourselves, there are no rules on Thursdays!

I have never seen this before.

    Diving in.

    • Common Tater

      I’ve never seen it either.

  2. Common Tater

    It’s also on YouTube.

  3. Common Tater

Oh, and RJ wanted to me to remind you that the Paul Lynde Christmas Special exists.

  4. Common Tater

I guess everyone is watching donkeyball?

    • DEG

I’m scratching my head while watching Pee-Wee Hermann.

      I don’t think I missed much.

      • rhywun

I’m afraid that Pee-Wee Hermann is absolutely unwatchable to me.

Appreciate all you do, R.J., but I’m sitting this one out πŸ™‚

      • Common Tater

I never was a fan either.

      • DEG

I’m afraid that Pee-Wee Hermann is absolutely unwatchable to me.

I don’t know how I made it through the whole thing.

I have never seen a Pee-Wee Hermann show before. And I see I’m not missing much.

        Sorry RJ. I tried.

      • Tres Cool

I skipped through and there were a couple of “adult jokes” that caught my attention.
But it was a bit much.

Thankfully we didnt do Star Wars Christmas.

      • Fourscore

        I watched about 1/2, I don’t know why…

      • Muzzled Woodchipper

Pee Wee was part of a cultural moment. If you didn’t get him when you were a kid, there is no chance now.

  5. Common Tater

What is the difference between a sleigh and a sled?

      • Common Tater

Not sure what you mean here. A Radio Flyer/Flexible Flyer has blades like an ice skate, and those are sleds, not sleighs.

I thought maybe a sleigh was pulled by horses, and a sled was either pulled by dogs or not pulled at all.

      • UnCivilServant

Or, it’s a case of “English is an overloaded language”

      • Fourscore

Tater’s definition is accurate. Santa’s sleigh is pulled by deer

Now a dray, on the other hand…

      • Common Tater

“Or, it’s a case of β€œEnglish is an overloaded language””

English does have a massive vocabulary.

      • Common Tater

I thought a dray was a bachelor’s pad for squirrels?

  6. Common Tater

Now I know where Dr.Phil got his decorating tips.

Paul Reubens was a talented guy and Mystery Men continues to be underrated by many. I’m not terribly upset I missed out on this bit of the ’80s.

Zsa Zsa Gabor was married eight times. Reminds me of my most recent ex’s mom. IIRC she was on #7. First time I met her, she rushed to show me how well a wedding dress she’d just got fit my just-turned gf. It was rather odd. Egyptian, the mom was a higher up in Peru, Indiana, which I didn’t know when I was there.
Grace Jones.. sadly, I know her ‘best’ from the Bond flick w Christopher Walken. (A View to a Kill. Fuck. That’s a shitty title.)

    • Evan from Evansville

Fuck. I miscounted. “Gabor was married nine times. She was divorced seven times, and one marriage was annulled.” Well. Hrm. I’m goin’ with 8.5. Rounds up, but still. Oooh, and I don’t know if I’m thrilled or peeved: “When asked how many husbands she had had, she used to say: “You mean other than my own?” Sounds an awful lot like Madeline Kahn in Clue. I’m quite sure a friendly homage, but I like thinking that’s an original joke, not a cultural hand-me-down. Def in my Top 5 list, I love in ’85 each theater only showed one of the three endings. Keeps the ‘mystery’ alive, even between towns/theaters. “At MINE Ms Scarlet did it all!” “NO! They ALL DID!” “NO! At mine it was Ms PEACOCK!” Stellar cast and a rare, Perfect Film, not a line or shot wasted.

      • Evan from Evansville

Both are primo cases of comedic talent + looks. Quite remarkable. Eagerly desire to be their foil. Oooh. Fantastic Afterlife for me: Ev’s Dead & Comin’ Up Red(head). The three of us, lovers and roommates together, have happy hijinks in our own way. Different actors, directors and such occasionally join our fun, when we we’re nice enough to have ’em.

It’d be interesting to see how good/not Classical actors were a few thousand years ago. Naval battles+ in the Colosseum, would be spectacular, I reckon/like to think. The contemporary Over-the-Top-itude would likely be equal to modern sensibilities. Would watch.

Kane’s great. Exceptionally pretty and fantastic as a made-ugly chick, namely Grandma Addams and Miracle Max’ Witch Wife.

        I imagine I still could.

      • rhywun

I just saw Kai Winn on Perry Mason – zounds!

      • Common Tater

“I always thought Carol Kane was good looking”

        Link no worky for me.

    • Tres Cool

I watched Mystery Men for about the 100’th time last week.
Greg Kinnear plays a great dope.

I love his line when he gets gassed. “Aw dang!”

  8. Aloysious

My ISP is the asshoe. Down until tomorrow.

I will not watch video on the phone thingy.

    I blame moon Nazi’s.

    • Common Tater

      I blame the government.

    • Tres Cool

Do you need the Cal score?

      • rhywun

        There it is.

      • CPRM

They lost to UNLV 24-13 in the Art of Sports LA Bowl Hosted By Gronk.

These fucking bowl game names suck.

      • Gender Traitor

I’ll have you know my alma mater is playing in the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl!

Officially titled the “Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl Presented by Gin & Juice By Dre and Snoop,” the rapper’s brand is the first alcohol partner to sponsor an NCAA Bowl Game, according to the original announcement back in May.

        It’s historic!

    • ron73440

      Blame Elon.

If you have Star link, then obviously it’s his fault.

If you don’t have Star link, then it’s his fault for not making free.

If he wasn’t such a greedy Trump supporter he would have given it to you for free.

You know he could afford it.

  9. Common Tater

Looks like Annette Funicello had quite the rack.

    • Fourscore

      Q scored.

She’s been gone for a while now

    • creech

Yeah, she had a couple nice personalities on the Mickey Mouse Club.

  10. Chipping Pioneer

I hate the Chargers more than the Chiefs or Raiders.

    • slumbrew

Totally forgot there was a game tonight.

Bruins v Oilers was good, though. Even if the Bs only got a point.

  11. rhywun

Whoopi Goldberg, who was never funny or entertaining

    I liked her on ST:TNG.

    Yeah, I said it.

    • Chipping Pioneer

That’s because Marina Sirtis didn’t show up on your radar.

      • rhywun

lol I have some older brothers who filled me on that score.

As if her purpose on the show wasn’t plainly obvious to anyone watching.

      • Common Tater

“Captain, I’m sensing someone is looking at my boobs.”

      • rhywun

My favorite was that terrible episode with the knocked-out Betazoid feeding her dreams of “One Moon Circles”. The whole thing was just excuse to film her ass floating up, up, and away.

  12. Chipping Pioneer

I got a job offer Monday for what is essentially the job I’ve been looking for. Almost everything I wanted, except for PTO. I countered with an increase in base salary less than 5% of total compensation and confirmed that I could get modest amounts of non-PTO.

Still nothing back from them yet. Starting to get anxious.

    Advice?

  13. DrOtto

Q: Who were two people shot in theaters?
A: Abraham Lincoln and the guy sitting in front of Pee Wee Herman.

    • Chipping Pioneer

I snickered. Then checked the back of my head.

  14. Evan from Evansville

I wish you the best of luck. I’m sure others can help ya out. Not trying to hijack, but semi-similar question on my end:

I applied to a (close to?) dream job yesterday. It’s nearby but tiny. If it were larger and had a front staff, I’d likely show up and just ask what they thought of my writing samples, etc. I’m wondering what’s Modern American etiquette for how/when to ask about my application/ the jobs’ status. I’ve got several out all over, but with online apps ever-constant, I never know what the deal is. I very rarely get emails saying they’re moving on. What do folk do? (Prey, yes.)

    • Evan from Evansville

Whoops. First part is for Ricky up there, Mr. Pioneer.

    • rhywun

Wait a couple days and then bug them.

They will never contact you even if they want you.

      • Evan from Evansville

Thank you thank you. I’ve been wanting to do just that. I figured / felt it might be off-putting in modern Bubble Land, where strangers seem to (increasingly) never interact. This is one I legit *do* want. Feels nice to actually be confident walking in.

      • rhywun

Just recall how busy everyone is.

If they want you they’ll be happy you contacted them.

    • Evan from Evansville

Ouch, auto. (“Pray, yes.”) I don’t… feel hunted…

    • rhywun

I always liked that song. Only one I remember of hers.

  15. CPRM

I’ve never learned exactly which movie he was jacking to. Journalism has been in a sad state for quite some time.

  16. Sean

Yay, it’s Friday! Have a great one, Glibs!

I had another particular song picked for today, but I’m gonna save it for tomorrow. This one will still rock your tits off though.

    • Gender Traitor

Good morning, Sean and Ted’S., and good afternoon, Pie!

  17. PieInTheSky

Last work day of the year… Not that much in the mood for work. I finished and submitted my second piece on Romanian politics… I doubt there is much interest for even one, but here we are.

    • Gender Traitor

It looks as if your first one is scheduled for (Western) Christmas Eve. (Pardon me for asking, but does Romania mainly follow the Western or Orthodox calendar for holidays?) Looking forward to reading it!

      • PieInTheSky

We keep the old way just for Easter. Our Christmas is the same as yours.

Moldova and Russia keep the old ways. Before the troubles, it was good for tourism as russian tourists came to Romania for their christmas and so the hotels had customers for both.

    • Gender Traitor

I’m not entirely opposed because, well, cheese! But then you have to offset the cheese with some fiber, and then you would probably have to offset something about the fiber with something else…
