All We Got is One Goddamn Hit?

I told my youngest the heartbreaking news from earlier this week and he demonstrated why he’s a very special person.

This is my review of Pedal Haus German Style Pilsner:

What was the news, and what did he say? I told him Bob Ueker passed away at 90, and his response was “who was Bob Ueker?”

I then showed him how to run a snake through the bathtub, and then told him to make sure all the drains in all the bathrooms were clear. Damn kid pissed me off, now he gets to do plumbing jobs.

Bob was very much loved by all baseball fans for his brand of self-deprivating humor. He is perhaps part of the last generation of celebrities from a mostly homogeneous culture that was loved almost universally.

He was also the rare personality in sports broadcasting that had the ability to be entertaining without taking anything away from the game he was calling. Chris Collingsworth could learn fro:this guy if he were capable of learning. Mostly he is remembered for playing himself the legendary Harry Doyle in Major League:

However it is safe to note this was not an act. Don’t take it from me, take it from Norm MacDonald:

Rest easy Bob.

Hard to find a beer worthy of Bob Ueker? Not really, turns out I didn’t even need to find a Miller Lite to do it. This brewery has a heavy biking theme to their naming conventions rather than baseball, but hey its close enough. Its a solid German Pils, done correctly. Easily enjoyed at any sporting event, but one particularly played in the summer. If that means this brewery somehow gets a lift by being associated with Bob, then good for them. Pedal Haus German Style Pilsner: 3.5/5

Uek was the sound of summer in Wisconsin. Even if you didn’t listen to baseball you listened to Uek.

      Venturing onto Norm Crosby turf?

Goddamnit. Well…I’m not editing it now.

Major League was released in 1989, the year my son was born. So yeah, anyone under 35 – I’d give them a pass on not knowing Bob (since his commercial fame was of about the same vintage). Yer gettin’ old dude, get used to this kind of thing.

    • Chafed

Stop reminding me I’m getting old. I already know.

I’m aware. My oldest challenged me to a 42” box jump. He can do it, I can’t.

Found another weird beer here – German, but all Italian labeling…and distributed by Anheuser….

Tennents Super Strong Lager (9% ABV)…really tastes about the same as Yuengling, so not bad…definitely feels stronger, but not sure if I’m feeling 9% yet….

    • LCDR_Fish

      Bottle is a little smaller though…only about 275ml – guess that’s less than 10oz.

    • Chafed

Is it labeled in Italian because you’re in Italy?

      • rhywun

        *snicker*

      • LCDR_Fish

Maybe…but they don’t do that for all the beers. Really…the label makes it sound more like a UK brewery…but product of Germany.

    • EvilSheldon

In the UK, I believe they refer to that as ‘tramp juice’,,,

  5. juris imprudent

Since it was too late to throw onto the links, and I don’t feel like waiting 20 more minutes…

OT, but I’ll put money on EcoHealth Alliance not even existing in five years.

      I think you are right.

That’s spectacular, forcing Mel fucking Brooks to have to catch his drink sputtering out his mouth cuz he can’t stop laughing. That would be at the top of my resume and life’s achievements.

Wait. I thought the entire democratic establishment knows EXACTLY what Trump is going to do. He’s going to become a Nazi overlord, shipping quiltbag+ folk and single women to camps for elimination and forced birthing respectively. All minorities are at the risk of death.

I mean, they only yammered about it for 9 months before the election.

      • Suthenboy

MW: 9 months? It has been non-stop since Peter Suderman outted TOS in 2015. He informed us about the coming rape/murder gangs of Trump supporters we could expect to roam the streets in a ‘The Purge’ style world he would usher in.

Though dictionaries say that “black market” conveys illegality, CNN journalists repeatedly claimed they thought it meant merely an “unregulated” market. In his closing remarks, Freedman slammed “seven witnesses, all testifying to a uniform, non-dictionary definition” of a word.

I am about to be off to buy our 6th microwave oven in 10 years. I haven’t quite decided yet what I will buy but I have a good idea what it will be. A piece of crap.
We started with a mid-range priced one. It quit working after about two years. We replaced it with a super cheapo oven. It was just as good just smaller than its predecessor. It lasted two years and crapped out. We tried buying a high end, very fancy multi-purpose microwave/airfrying/ uh…something else, I forget. After a year it caught fire while in microwave mode. We went back to the cheapo and got on fine…for a year and a half. Replaced it with an identical one which is now smoking a bit when I use it to heat water to make tea. It is, like the others, a fire hazard.
Whose idea was it to outsource our manufacturing to Melanesia? Whoever that was should be drawn and quartered.

    • Stinky Wizzleteats

Try an Amazon search for commercial grade microwave, all of the big box store ones are cheaply made pieces of shite. Expensiver but worth it.

    • The Bearded Hobbit

Odd. We’ve had great luck with microwaves, just buying mid-grade. The one in place is six years old, no problems. The one it replaced lasted probably 15 years.

      • R.J.

You have been lucky. Every two or three years I replace mine

      • Suthenboy

        Which one is it?
The commercials start at 300 and go up to 1500. Not gonna spend that much on a microwave so what you suggest is tempting.

      • rhywun

The one it replaced lasted probably 15 years.

Same – some cheapo model from Home Depot. Current 2023 model is not as cheapo but I’m sure it’s from one of those two Chinese companies noted above that make all of them so we’ll see.

      • Fourscore

Damn, In the last 30 plus years I think we’ve had 3-4. Always the Walmart $89.50 model, and we use them a lot. Right now we have 1 upstairs in the kitchen, 1 downstairs for reheating coffee, etc.

The MW at the cabin is one of that was used at The Last Supper. That baby weighs in at about 60 lbs, an Amana I think. It rarely gets used anymore It must be close to 40 years old. Works fine.

      • The Bearded Hobbit

Our current one is a Panasonic bought on Amazon for about $200,

How “clean” is your power? You might be killing the microwave with spikes. Try plugging your new one into a surge suppressor and see if that helps.

      • Toxteth O'Grady

        👍👍

Panasonic inverter. Its only fault is its lack of door handle.

Electric kettle (1 L is fine for 1-2 people).

    • The Hyperbole

“Whose idea was it to outsource our manufacturing to Melanesia?”

The ‘Market’, you know… people buying and selling things.

“when I use it to heat water to make tea”

There’s your problem right there, get a tea kettle and heat your water on the stove as G*D intended.

I don’t even own a microwave, you people are soft.

      • Nephilium

Electric kettle trumps kettle on stove.

      • Stinky Wizzleteats

Cast iron kettle over a wood fire or GTFO.

      • KK, Plump & Unfiltered

Banana leaf pouch over coals or GTFO

    • whiz

Hmm, I inherited a smallish Kenmore from my mom and have had it 12 years. She probably had it close to that before then.

    • kinnath

We installed an over-the-range microwave when we moved in almost 20 years ago. It lasted as decade or so. The replacement just died before Christmas.

The new one we installed is working fine, except the “range” light stopped working after 1 week. Fucking annoying.

    • Ted S.

I went to put fries in the toaster oven for dinner today, and the door opened with a very loud crash of some sort. Apparently a hinge or something broke, because the door no longer stays closed. (The hinge is on the bottom.) We’ve only had this toaster oven 22 months.

Supermarket was at least triple busier than normal. Due to 3”-6” of snow due tomorrow 🙄

Don’t forget the eggs, bread, toilet paper, and bottled water.

    • KK, Plump & Unfiltered

I had to wait for the self checkout just now at the grocery – never had to do that before! We’re not even supposed to get snow until Tuesday, and even then it’s looking like 1-2″ at most.

    • rhywun

We’re not getting much snow but it is going down to 0° tomorrow (?) night.

  13. mikey

When we lived in MA people would stock up with frozen dinners. Yeah, you can keep them on the back porch, but then what?

    • Fourscore

We rarely lose power here and never in the winter. A lot of underground lines. Summer time, maybe, every 3-4 years, an outage of a couple hours. We also get some back every year ’cause we’re a co-op and have been a customer for 35 years or more.

    • Contrarian P

Sit on em until they’re ready. I mean, do you even protect the planet bro?
