And this is what I came home to.

There’s something to be said for low humidity. I’ll leave it at that.

Links?

Where else are you going to go to crank the hog?

Her fun bags aren’t so fun right now.

Not exactly a nut punch. More like a constant flicking.

Dicks out for animal frens.

The bottom line here is, his demons finally won.

The headline is complete bullshit. The fact is, Yellowstone has abandoned us just like SMOD.

Okay, that’s it for today. It appears that we all survived New Years and are ready to move forward into this one. Peace out, Glibbies.

One of the positive things that I think came out of the pandemic was global compilation songs. To wit, I give you John Paul Jones and company with When the Levee Breaks. This is worth cranking the volume to 11.

“China is stalking the US with advanced drones in an unhinged suicide note”

Does the Daily Mail have Alzheimer’s such that they’ve already forgotten about, what was it, last week? Seems more implausible than unhinged, the suicide notwithstanding.

    • Gender Traitor

Maybe it’s more hinged than we care to admit…

    • rhywun

FBI told them to use “unhinged”.

    • Ownbestenemy

At this point…I don’t see it as unhinged. We are due for the next leap in propulsion anyway

  2. Grumbletarian

That is a damn good rendition of When the Levee Breaks.

Next week is “The Weight” with Ringo.

      • Chafed

        That will be interesting.

This is one of the few Led Zep songs I haven’t burned out on listening too (college room mate was a die hard LZ fan)

      • Spudalicious

I listen to plenty of Zeppelin, but I get you. This song I can put on a loop.

    • NoDakMat

I was feeling a little ambivalent until halfway through when the women took over the vocals. They delivered the soul that the song needs. Even the music got better at that point.

      • slumbrew

The Kiwi’s got serious pipes and Tedeschi always brings it.

The guy “rockin’ out” on the pan flute looks like a SNL skit.

      • rhywun

I was impressed by the Tedeschi chick – don’t know her other than “Tedeschi” is Italian for “Germans”.

      • kinnath

        Derek, not Daryl.

      • NoDakMat

As soon as I saw Susan Tedeschi I recognized her name, but I’ll be damned if I can figure out why. I skimmed her wikipedia page and that didn’t shed any light. I’ll have to check out youtube. Hey, Slum, you apparently know of her. Why would her name ring a bell for me?

      • slumbrew

‘Tedeschi Trucks’, their combined band, still tours constantly. They kick ass (although I’ve not seen them live).

      • NoDakMat

Hmm. Thanks, Slum and Kinnath. I don’t recognize any of that, but for some reason I know her name. Whatevs. Anyhow, the Kiwi is incredible. There’s a touch of Janice Joplin deep in that voice.

    • Gender Traitor

Despite the presence of a couple of small humidifiers – mainly for the sake of the guitar collection (🙄) – my skin’s gotten dry & itchy enough to switch from regular bath soap to a supposedly moisturizing body wash…except for the bottoms of my feet, as the tub has only shallow molded ridges and nothing with any real grip. (I can still sing in the shower, but gotta cut down on the dancing.)

I remember that from Buffalo winters.

Nothing like that in NYC, or even Ithaca. All the locals here complain about winter as if it has anything on Rochester or Syracuse.

        Good episode, mahalo.

This is from a junior year geology class and goes into the history of the calderas that now manifest as Yellowstone- as were briefly discussed in your video.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8uybLf-5q0

The same geologist (Nick Zentner) has a series of public lectures on the geology of central Washington and the PNW that are very entertaining.

      • dbleagle

Pro-tip. Start at the 20th minute of the video since that is when the class starts.

      • DEG

Tres, I saw the post on the dedthread about your cousin. Sorry.

    • SarumanTheGreat

Yep, when resurgent calderas burp, everybody notices. The Yellowstone plume has been blowtorching the bottom of western North America for at least 10-15 million years. The Snake River Valley traces much of its route. And as the video mentions the Toba, Sumatra eruption made the 2.1 MY Yellowstone eruption look small. What life was like when the Columbia basalts erupted, much less the Deccan Traps or the Siberian Traps, I can’t imagine.

  5. Mojeaux

I don’t believe that Tesla bomber story in the least bit.

We’re settling in at the hospital, as the streets have iced over and a blizzard warning has been issued. There are multiple cars off the road on our route from here to home, which is apx 2 miles. The ER waiting room is packed. I’m sure mom will be admitted.

XX is tucked in at home with strict instructions not to go anywhere, but she’s free, white, and 21. That said, she hates driving in the best of conditions, so I don’t think she’ll venture out.

XY is stuck at his store 25 miles away, with a jackknifed semi between him and the highway he needs to get home. He does have a 4WD with new tires, BUT Chipotle has refused to close the store tonight or tomorrow, so he’s going to sleep at the store tonight. I asked him if there was a hotel near his store. He said the store has heat and food so he’s set. HOWEVER, he can’t get a vendor out to scrape and salt his parking lot and sidewalks.

I like not having school-age children, but the worry doesn’t stop when they grow up and is sometimes worse.

      • Mojeaux

I believe they took their butcher knives and took off just a bit ago.

    • rhywun

Best of luck to y’all. No snow peens pointing at upstate NY 😐

    • UnCivilServant

I’m trying to fit the first sentence in with the updates.

On the updates, I’m glad the kids are safe. I assume you don’t plan to leave the hospital after your mom is admitted until the conditions improve (medical and/or weather).

    • Ownbestenemy

Pretreatment of salting done. Walkway, around the cars, and deck are all salted.

Should make late afternoon pre-digout a bit better. Predictions at worst are 8 inches. My wife said ‘I can handle that’ giggity.

    • Gender Traitor

Hope all is well with your mom, you (done my share of hospital overnights – hope you have somewhere to lie down comfortably,) and the kids (especially XY. At least the weather may make for a quiet night. If some idiot craving guac slips and falls on store property and sues, at least he can tell corporate “Told you so” – ideally, not in his exit interview.)

    • KK, Plump & Unfiltered

Hope all is well and everyone is safe

      • Mojeaux

Not gonna be zooming today. Kidney infection. She’s being admitted.

Other than that, it’s slicker than snot out there, so we’d be staying anyway.

      • Spudalicious

        Godspeed, Mo.

      • Old Man With Candy

        Fingers crossed.

      • Chafed

        Good luck Mo.

You could zoom all the crazies in the ER. It’s not as if you’re subject to HIPAA here. 😉

      • KK, Plump & Unfiltered

        We’ll be thinking about y’all

    • Suthenboy

You are correct. However you could leave out the ‘Tesla bomber’ and be more correct.

    Be afraid

The state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter is an attractive target “for violent extremists to attack,” especially after the vehicle ramming in New Orleans that killed 14 people, though there are no known threats to the funeral, according to a new security assessment obtained by ABC News.

“State funerals are considered no-notice events that significantly reduce planning timelines for potential hostile actors,” the document said. “However, state funerals still present attractive targets due to the large gathering of senior US government officials, foreign dignitaries, and heads of state, as well as the symbolic nature of the venues and media attention expected.”

I think we all know who poses the real threat.

    • dbleagle

Ummm who do they think will actually attend the JC funeral in DC? I’m sorry but the Assistant Deputy Assistant Minister of Agriculture from various nations isn’t a “high power” target. Also, various aged members of his cabinet and blue haired men and women isn’t fraught with symbolism.

  12. R C Dean

“There’s something to be said for low humidity.”

It’s basically a gating issue for Mrs. Dean and me now. Now that we’ve both retired, we’ve played around with “We can live anywhere, really. Where would we consider moving?” And most of the US east of the Rockies is out.

Honestly, if we could find just the right thing in Oracle, AZ, that would be our sweet spot. Enough elevation to avoid the punishing heat of Tucson (and Phoenix), but still not really cold. Close enough to both for access to Big City Stuff when we need it/feel like it. Basically the northern foothills of the Catalinas, with nice topography and native vegetation. But it’s small, selection is limited, and Casa Dean is pretty sweet and hard to beat.

    • Spudalicious

I have live my whole life west of the Rockies and my time in the East changes my opinion not at all.

    • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

Every time I play around with that question, I end up in Pittsburg.

I too have lived my whole life on the west coast, but my son moving to NYC changed a lot of things in my mind.

      • dbleagle

Oracle is a great town. I worked a couple of years as an AZ State Park Ranger there.

You are correct that it has(d) a bunch going for it.*

        *I haven’t been there in over 15 years so…..

      • R C Dean

We like it, but just nothing worth trading in what we have, yet. The “front” side (to the west) is kind of flat and meh. On the “back” side, though, it gets more hilly, more elevation, more vegetation (including trees!), and it backs up to a national park. Runs about 10 degrees cooler than Tucson, 15 cooler than Phoenix. An hour or so to Phoenix, half an hour to Tucson.

For us, a sweet spot all around. Just need the right thing.

      • creech

“An hour or so to Phoenix, half an hour to Tucson.”
Are you near any wineries? I stopped at a winery in that general area maybe 25 years ago just to say I tasted an Arizona wine. It turned out to be pretty good. Wonder if they are still around.

      • R C Dean

We don’t live in Oracle, but I don’t think there are any wineries there. I think they are more to the east and south(?) of Tucson.

The whole Cybertruck at Trump Tower thing is a little too pat.

The amateur bomb from somebody who absolutely should have known better (and had access to the good stuff) is just, what?

The “body is unrecognizable burned, but his wallet was completely intact!)” is maybe plausible, but in context? I struggle.

Looks like the default rule (“your government did it and is lying to you about it”) hasn’t been displaced, in my book.

      • creech

So an “amateur” bomb? If some nefarious government types were behind it, why wasn’t it an effective, professional bomb? And what would be the purpose behind framing some stooge with an amateur bomb that didn’t do much damage at all?

      • R.J.

It’s such a screwy story it might just be true. He was a total nutjob who blew himself up with fireworks after his wife couldn’t take his B.S. anymore.

      • R.J.

About the only thing missing from his manifesto would be a statement regarding his desire to live life as a woman. I have no doubt something along those lines will pop up in the coming weeks.

      • Spudalicious

His intention wasn’t to blow up Trump Tower. It was to get attention. And from my professional perspective, I can absolutely see why his wallet would be intact if it was in his back pocket, or even on the floorboard, for the same reason they could identify the tattoos. The incendiary device vented upwards, as did the flash fire that engulfed the cabin of the vehicle. The burn damage would decrease as you go farther down the body, plus the protection of the seat behind him.

Like I said, based on his history, his demons finally won. I’m going with Occam’s Razor and leaving the tinfoil in the drawer on this one.

      • rhywun

Unless his demons were telling the truth. 🥴

      • UnCivilServant

Demons lie, but a good like has a shard of truth.

The Vikings spent $2 million on about 1,900 tickets for seats located behind the visitor sideline at Ford Field Sunday and are now reselling those tickets to fans at a heavy discount, according to Sports Illustrated. ”

    • Nephilium

While I’m kind of pulling for the Lions, I still would rather their first Superbowl be against the Browns, for the lovely symmetry of two original teams (depending on how you count the Browns) who would be going to their first Superbowl.

And play it in Buffalo so only the pierogi belt would care.

      • ZWAK, doktor of BRAIN SCIENCE!

If it is the Lions, and they win, you will have an OG Detroit Brown Out.

I hope to. I was joking with an older guy at the bar that I was old enough to remember when we were good in the 80’s, but had never seen a championship team. He admitted being old enough to remember the last championship (1964). The girlfriend thought this might mean that season ticket prices would go down in price next year. Such an innocent new sports fan…

      • dbleagle

My absolute preference would be to watch Bills and Vikings in the Super Bowl.

Two teams with 0-4 SB records who were dominant in their SB days. Imagine the NFL Films voice, “Two 0-4 teams enter the field. One will be crowned, and one will tie the records for the most Super losses.”

      • rhywun

I’m kind of afraid to be rooting for the Bills in a Super Bowl.

“Large families generate personality types that are increasingly absent from the world with the disappearance of large families — super responsible eldest siblings who raise younger children; youngest children largely insulated from parental influence; a combination of the security that comes from being part of a large brood and selflessness that comes experiencing no solitude all of one’s formative years. These personality types play crucial societal functions that have fallen into abeyance.”

Anecdotal: The Birth Order Theory plays out perfectly with 6 years older bro. He was a kinda half-parent, and it assuredly had a lot to do with his brain. However, it’s been confirmed he had his friends march around the block/house as their commander of sorts before I came along. We have ~the same intelligence and athletic abilities, with completely different personalities and interests. I think there may be a legit biological semi-inkling of an idea behind the ‘heir and a spare’ medieval phrase. With child mortality a huge problem, it would play well to invest all the best genes in the first one ya conceive. The backup is insurance.

Bro is very calculating. His control and planning would be quite freaky, but his business, family, etc plans seem to more or less always work out, are moral and well-meaning. He would love to be the Philosopher King he thinks himself to be. Natch, he’s in lockstep with the new priestly caste. I’m quite curious what the rest of the family is thinking, post Trump-elect 2.0, but they’re being politely silent. I do wonder.

I’m sorry to hear that, but glad she’s where she needs to be. Hopefully a swift recovery. Hospital food, oh dearie me, how I strongly approve. I’m eternally thankful it’s improved in my lifetime, well-beyond the sit-com shit show I’d feared. Patients who are well-fed, comfortable and semi-distracted/entertained tend to feel better, mentally and physically. Kinda priceless. Whoddathunk?

      • Mojeaux

Hospital food you get in bed is entirely different from hospital cafeteria food, especially bfast.

More than half of all U.S. presidents come from just four states: Virginia, Ohio, New York and Massachusetts account for 24 of the 44 men who have served in the role.

The locations of presidential gravesites are a bit more spread out — yet strangely concentrated at times.

For instance, three different locales are the final resting place for two presidents, and one of those — Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, VA, also contains the grave of CSA President Jeff Davis.
